Bolton School Primary Division

Junior Boys’ School

Last Thursday, we held our annual Open Evening where we enjoyed welcoming many visitors and prospective families to Park Road. I should like to give a particular thanks to the Year 6 boys who were absolutely fantastic when showing families around school. Many of our visitors were very impressed by how knowledgeable and enthusiastic they were.

Our final Patterdale Hall trips are about to take place, with Year 3 heading out tomorrow and returning at 6pm on Friday 5th May and our Year 6s heading out next Tuesday 9th May and returning on Friday 12th May. The boys who have been so far have had a fantastic time and created lasting memories.

As the King has requested, we have pledged our help to volunteer at Bolton Hospice and will be preparing garden planters to bring joy to the patients, families and staff there. Tomorrow, a few of our boys from our Eco Committee will join other Primary Foundation students and head over to brighten the gardens of our local hospice.

Today, as part of the Primary Foundation, our boys were filmed singing a special King’s Coronation song. The performance is part of our celebrations this week, which will culminate on Friday. We will have a Coronation- themed PA Breakfast Club at 8am on Friday 5th May, as well as a celebration and special assembly after lunch. I should like to remind you that boys can come to school dressed in red, white and blue on Friday as part of these celebrations.

This evening sees our inaugural Hulton Lecture. Our guest speaker, Rob Dobson, has spent time in the Foundation, looking at the learning that takes place and getting a better understanding of our school. We hope to see many of you in attendance after school today.

In collaboration with Bolton Together and Bolton Council, Fortalice is delivering workshops for children, young people (8 years to 11 years) and their parents/carers on how to keep safe online. The workshops are for children and parents/carers to attend together. Please see the flyer linked here for more detail. SK

Message from Mrs Faulkner- Head of Primary Foundation

There has been a notable increase in those seeking approval for additional days of holiday, very often immediately before or after the normal school holidays. We monitor all such absence in order to spot patterns and discern trends. It is timely to remind you that I cannot, by law, grant absence for holidays in term time unless in exceptional circumstances.

The clear sense of the guidance is that ‘exceptional’ also means rare and certainly not due to the planning of flights and other logistical arrangements. Permission must be granted in advance, so a letter on the day of the absence or a call as a holiday is extended cannot be authorised. This is why such absence is recorded as ‘unauthorised’.

Y6 Return from Patterdale Hall 3.55pm

Zach ( from 4B) recounts: Our first trip to Patterdale Hall was a great experience for all of us in Year 4. There were lots of fun activities which we got to do with our friends. Activities like gorge walking and paddleboarding were exciting and also gave us a chance to see the beautiful nature around Patterdale Hall. The hiking was brilliant because we learnt lots of geographical information and in bushcraft we had the chance to build fires and make bread. The food at Patterdale Hall was amazing and all the staff were very helpful and friendly. We can’t wait to go back next year!

Junior Maths Challenge

On Wednesday, ten boys from Year 6 took on the Junior Mathematical Challenge. This challenge is a 60-minute, multiplechoice challenge, aimed to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

The problems on the Junior Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think and there was certainly lots of this yesterday! Well done to all boys who took part and we wish them all the best of luck as we await their results. MLB

Year 7 Senior School Places

Year 6 parents of boys joining Senior School should have recently received information regarding joining papers. We would like to remind Y6 parents that they need to return a copy of their son’s birth certificate/passport with their joining papers.

Local Authority Senior School Places

We should like to remind Year 6 parents that, if your son has been offered a senior school place at a Local Authority school, which you do NOT intend to take up, you should advise that LEA yourself.

We are now beginning to receive invitations for some of our Year 6 boys to attend taster days at other schools. If you have no plans for your son to accept the place, it is important that it should released quickly into the system, so that another child who was not fortunate enough to receive an offer in the first instance, may benefit from it. Many thanks

Big Battery Hunt

The Big Battery Hunt is a nationwide programme to help educate and inspire young people to recycle more used batteries. Please send your unwanted batteries to school, where we will store them and then take them to our local supermarket for recycling. There are great prizes to be won for school including £3500 towards outdoor and garden equipment. SL

Year 6 Play: Important Dates

Due to a range of events in the school calendar, the Year 6 Play 2023 will now be taking place over the following three evenings: Tuesday 4th at 7pm, Wednesday 5th at 7pm and Thursday 6th 5pm. Monday 5th June: 13.00 – 14.30
