ASK OUR GA COUNCILLORS
Oscar Valenzuela Councillor of Gran Alacant & Education
Hello Lou, thank you for printing my question about positioning a mirror opposite the exit from Lidl carpark to assist the car drivers when leaving the car park. Well done to authorities as they were busy erecting this mirror yesterday. Excellent work by all concerned. Geoff
Q: Speed bumps on Calle Canarias
Hi Lou, I wrote you this summer about too fast traffic in Calle Canarias including all the buses. We really need speed bumps, soon we will have an accident. And a question about the new school. Will there be a new road into the school. As it is now only one way in and out and this is crazy. Regards Jan
Hi Lou, We live on Calle Canarias which is now the new route for all the buses, Alicante and Santa Pola.
The problem with this now is the speed at which they travel up this street. This is a residential street with parked cars on both sides, new bins and children crossing. There is a speed limit which is not being adhered to and with a few near misses already it's only a matter of time until someone is killed or seriously injured. Regards, Christopher
Borja Merino Councillor of Gran Alacant Tourism, Health & Animal Welfare
A: Oscar Valenzuela
We will ask the traffic police to study the traffic on this street and apply for speed bumps if they decide it's necessary.
Q: Drains on Calle Canarias
Hi Lou, In light of the recent storms, Gran Alacant doesn't have many rain water drains but the ones we do have, are very badly blocked. Can we ask the councillors to arrange for them unblocking urgently please. Thanks, Lynne
A: GA Advertiser
We have forwarded your request to the councillor for cleaning and hope your drains will be cleared promptly. Please keep us updated.

Gran Alacant News
GA TOWN HALL OFFICES
TEMPORARILY
MOVE TO LIFE RESORT
Services for Gran Alacant residents have been temporarily relocated to the municipal offices on the first floor of the Life Resort shopping centre, located on Monte de Santa Pola Street.
This provisional arrangement will remain in place while renovations are carried out at the municipal building on Avenida de Escandinavia. Improvements include a more open-plan layout, new flooring, and energy-efficient lighting. Public service hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 13:30. Appointments can be scheduled through the town hall’s official website.
NEW PROTOCOL TO COORDINATE ROAD SAFETY
Santa Pola Town Hall has approved a protocol to enhance road safety coordination between the Civil Guard's Traffic Division and the Local Police. The Civil Guard will oversee interurban roads, while the Local Police handle urban areas, paths, crossings, and specific routes like Camino del Cabo, Camino del Faro, and port roads. Shared responsibilities include key zones such as the N-332 and Gran Alacant access points. This agreement aims to streamline traffic management and boost safety across critical areas.
SANTA POLA ANNOUNCES TAX CHANGES FOR 2025
Santa Pola Council has announced key tax updates for 2025. Property tax (IBI) will
drop by 5%, reducing the rate from 0.80% to 0.76%, reflecting updated cadastral values. However, the waste collection fee will rise from €60 to €72 annually to meet legal requirements. Other changes include increases in construction debris fees and a 15% rise in terrace space fees for bars and restaurants. Vehicle tax collection will shift to SUMA, and a new system ensures timely payment for municipal workers’ extra hours.
SANTA POLA AID COLLECTION FOR VALENCIA FLOOD VICTIMS
Santa Pola’s community united to support those affected by the DANA floods in Valencia. Last month, two trailers loaded with water, food, clothing, blankets, hygiene products, and cleaning supplies were sent to Valencia. Mayor Loreto Serrano expressed heartfelt gratitude to residents, businesses, and volunteers, applauding their quick and generous response. Local Police and Urbaser cleaning crews have also been on the ground assisting with rescues and debris removal.
Additionally, Santa Pola delivered seven pallets of essential items to Massanassa that included cleaning and hygiene products, baby supplies, gluten-free food, animal feed, and medication. With the help of over 100 dedicated volunteers, nearly 200 pallets of aid have been collected and prepared.

Gran Alacant Rallies Together to Support Our Neighbours in Valencia!
JOLLY ROGER´S & SAM´S PLAICE DONATIONS
"Thank you everyone for their generosity to help our neighbours in Valencia" - Donal, Owner
All donations collected at Jolly Roger´s & Sam´s Plaice were safely delivered to a donation point in Alicante for distribution in Valencia!
Last month residents across GA sprung into action to send aid to those affected by the DANA floods
One local resident of Gran Alacant was so moved by the images and videos circulating on TV news, that he felt compelled to not just show empathy with the victims but to do something positive for those left homeless. Michael Deady has spoken to us telling us of his mission.
Michael located from County Kerry in southern Ireland to Gran Alacant in 2007. "I had visited the Costa Blanca region in 2005 with my then partner for a week's holiday. We expected to be going home with a tan, however we ended up purchasing off plan property that would be completed two years later (2007)".
He tells us, "The tens of thousands who were left homeless needed urgent help and supplies of food & water. They are our neighbours. Having a van of 5 cubic metre capacity meant that I could put a lot of much needed donations into the van".
After the floods occurred on Tuesday 29th October, by Saturday morning, Michael was choosing venues that could be drop off points for the people of Gran Alacant to bring donations.
"I could only choose four points, but first I needed to contact the owners to seek their permission. All cooperated. I needed a name for the campaign and to print posters for the windows of each venue, as well as asking each owner to announce this on their Facebook page. "Let's Fill The Van" was up and running". The locals had a deadline of 30 hours for dropping off donations to the chosen venues. From Saturday noon to Sunday 6pm.
"By Sunday evening at 6pm, my assistant Cris and I went to the four venues in turn: Quicksave Supermarket, Dick Turpins bar, Miley O Rourke's Irish bar and Molly Malones Irish pub... By 7pm the van was totally full. To the brim. It was literally impossible to fit even one more bottle of water. First half of the campaign completed.
Initially we had planned to bring the van load of food, water and clothes to the main drop off point at the sports pavilion in Alicante on that night. But later we decided to take the donated goods directly to one of the worst hit zones, the Sports Hall in Torrent. We arrived late

La Piedra would like to say BIG thank you to all those who donated! Cristian who works in La Piedra safely delivered all donations and volunteered to help with his group of friends from Gran Alacant.
afternoon on Monday to the centre and the volunteers at the pavilion had the van emptied in 20 minutes. We were treated as heroes; to a rapturous round of applause from the locals, the volunteers and from some of those left homeless who were in temporary accommodation on the first floor. The volunteers at this sports hall appreciated our efforts in coming from Santa Pola and offered us showers and food. We felt overwhelmed. We declined taking showers at the pavilion but accepted the "bocadillos".
En route we could see the devastation, the volunteers removing the mud from the streets, the abandoned furniture forming little mountains on the roads. An apocalypse. Too much to take in. We had to remind ourselves where we actually were. This wasn't the Gaza strip. Nor Kiev. This was within a two hour drive of my home. I am glad that I undertook that mission. And I would like to repeat it in early December."
Michael wishes to give his gratitude to all the generous donors who donated so much to the campaign.
If you wish to contact Michael about offering donations for his next campaign "Let's Refill the Van" (early December) you can contact him by WhatsApp +34671719403.

PENANG UPDATE 2024: A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE TO WARM YOUR HEARTS
By Geoff Young
a story in January 2005 about the miracle baby of Penang. In fact it was a miracle that the whole family survived.
This December sees the 20th anniversary of the devastating Tsunami that tragically killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people across the Indian Ocean on Boxing Day 2004. When the 9.1 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, it triggered a massive Tsunami that destroyed Banda Ache, and, travelling at over 800km per hour soon covered the 600km to Penang Island in Malaysia.
Mary and Raja were in their late 40´s when they received news that Mary was pregnant with their second daughter. When Thulishi (Thaalishi) was born in early December 2004, she lived with her parents at the Miami Beach bar in Batu Ferringhi, just over the road from the Hydro Hotel, and literally on the beach. On 26th December 2004 when she was aged just 20 days old, the authorities forgot to inform those on the public beach in Batu Ferringhi that the Tsunami was headed their way. The private beaches were cleared, but tragically 37 people, mainly the elderly and the young lost their lives that day on the public beach.
Mary and Raja, saw the approaching wave and ran back to the wooden beach bar, but not before it hit them and their 12 year old daughter, Kaanchana and rammed them against the cliff face trapping them behind the bar until the waters receded. Baby Thaalishi, was fast asleep on a mattress in the beach house attached to the bar. The initial wave washed her and her mattress out to sea. When Mary and Raja were able to get from behind the bar, they ran out to sea screaming for the baby but she was nowhere to be seen. After some time of frantic searching they returned to the house, distraught, where they found the baby in another room, fast asleep on her mattress. A second wave had carried the mattress back into the house, depositing the baby on the floor, and in receding, jammed the door shut.
The baby never woke once. The world press got to hear of this event and the BBC carried
Having survived the Tsunami, they found their house and business wrecked. Raja borrowed some money to travel to Australia to try and earn enough to get the business up and running again. After 5-6 weeks and many (more) thousands of Ringgits in debt, Raja returned home. Initially he was bitter about the devastation and loss of his business, but he came to understand how fortunate he had been and how he could have lost things more precious to him. I was introduced to them in late 2005 by an Indian friend who wanted to support them by taking custom there to buy a few beers and possibly have a meal. I spent an enchanting night in late December 2005, sitting at the beach under a star lit sky, drinking Tiger beer and eating noodles, prepared by Mary, and all the time they (especially Kaanchana the eldest daughter) told us stories of the Tsunami.
I promised myself, if ever I returned to Batu Ferringhi I would look them up, and in 2013 I was revisiting Penang and took the bus to the Hydro Hotel where directly over the road I found the steps leading down to the beach. Kaanchana was on the mainland at University, but Raja, Mary and Thulaashi were there. She was 9 years old last time I met her and a lively engaging girl, who is fully aware of who she is and what she has been through, who will sit and talk to you without effect and even has her own business card for the Miami Café, where she is the “Tsunami Baby”.
Thulaashi is 20 years old this month and every year, on 26th December, she and her family go down to the waters in front of the family bar and offer special thanksgiving prayers for those who lost their lives that day but, importantly, to thank god for saving her all those years ago, something she has pledged to do for the rest of her life. The last I heard of Thulaashi, she was studying for an accountancy degree. I don’t think I will see her again but her story and that of Raja, Mary and Kaanchana touched my heart and I wish them long and fruitful lives.

Book of the month by Beth
A perceptive and well crafted novel
My Recommended Book of the Month
Hello Beautiful
By Ann Napolitano
Best friends and sisters , the four Padavano girls bring loving chaos to their close-knit Italian American neighbourhood.
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him.
So, when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano, it is as if the world has lit up around him.
With Julia comes her family: Sylvie, the family dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecilia is a free-spirited artist ; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all. But when darkness from William’s past begins to block the light of his future, it is Sylvie, not Julia, who becomes his closest confidante. The result is a catastrophic rift that leaves the family inhabiting two sides of a fault line. Will the loyalty that once rooted them be strong enough to draw them back together when it matters most.
This book was a bit like a modern ‘Little Women’ and I loved the perceptive way the author weaved in her colourful, caring and tender characters.
Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

THE NORWEGIAN CLUB - GRAN ALACANT
TRIP TO GANDIA 23RD OCTOBER
A delightful day trip with the Norwegian club took 68 happy members to Gandia. The group visited the impressive Cuevas de las Calaveras, featuring soaring ceilings, stalactites, fossils, and remains of ancient Neanderthals and Homo sapiens. The cave creates an atmosphere of peace and tranquility, as well as being very interesting and fun for little ones.
We next visited the Ducal Palace of the Borgias, a cultural gem in Gandia’s historic centre. The palace showcases a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neo-Gothic styles, reflecting its evolution over centuries. The trip concluded with a delicious lunch, making it another memorable outing with the Norwegian club members.

WHEN THE WATERS ROSE: LESSONS FROM VALENCIA´S DEVASTATING FLOODS
Over the last couple of weeks we have received a stream of messages from friends in other countries asking after our safety. The rest of the world has watched in horror the reports of devastating floods taking place in Eastern Spain. The images of entire towns and villages ripped apart by broiling masses of brown water are truly like nothing that we have witnessed before in Europe; even this summer’s floods in Central Europe were not on the same scale as what the Comunidad Valenciana suffered on October 29th. Hundreds of people have lost their lives and many thousands have lost homes, business and farms; communities literally torn apart.
The cause of the floods was unprecedented heavy rainfall; in some places an entire year’s rain fell in around 8 hours overwhelming drainage systems. Our coast is well used to seasonal rainfall, the appearance of rains in September or October is part of life and Levant Spaniards have learnt to respect and live with the heavy autumn rains and occasional flooding. From about the late 19th century the term “gota fria” (cold drop) became commonly used to describe
the effect of cold fronts combining with moist late summer air. In the early 2000s the modern technical meteorological term “DANA” (a Spanish language acronym) was adopted to more accurately describe the phenomenon of high altitude isolated depressions that causes heavy sudden localised precipitation.
This year’s rains were however different. What exactly occurred is not yet entirely clear but initial reports seem to indicate that the weather system that developed immediately prior to the rains this year was of a power not seen before on our coast. The heat gathered by the Mediterranean over the summer appears to have supercharged a DANA system to a degree that has not previously occurred creating rainclouds of unprecedented size and height. These towering clouds even appear to have punched their way through the barrier separating the troposphere and stratosphere and thereby causing a shock chilling that led to the cataclysmic precipitation that occurred. The most likely base cause of all of this is the increasing heat of the Mediterranean acting as the energy source driving the moisture cycle, this in turn is a product of global climate change caused by the warming greenhouse effect of increased atmospheric carbon due to fossil fuels and other industrial era pollution.
It is now correct to say that climate change has arrived on our coast.
The question is, how will we live with the new reality that we have created for ourselves? Since we started writing Home Turf back in 2020, we have written about matters related to mitigating and adapting to this new reality such as urban planning, water management, new habits and land use. Although it is not now possible to directly stop climate change, the process seems too far gone for that, it is possible to start to build more resilient towns and to adopt appropriate land use policies. Since we now know that heatwaves, long droughts and heavier rains will come on a much greater scale than previously it is incumbent on us to demand that planning authorities only permit development in safe areas with 21st century building techniques. We have written before about the huge difference between the old fashioned style of hard surface mass development
that characterises Gran Alacant and more modern urban development that makes mitigation and adaptation to the new climate conditions a key element of design. It may be that some existing developments will have to be abandoned, in particular those on low floodplains or natural water courses. Business as usual is surely not an option, if only because such properties and perhaps entire towns will become impossible to insure and hence valueless in the open property market. One wonders how many houses and flats in Valencia will now have their home insurance renewals refused, as is happening in large parts of Florida.
What is certain is that despair is also not an option. As we have described in previous articles there are many examples of new ways of building and living that are available to study and adopt. Our local council in Santa Pola has been part of a Europe wide municipal urban greening initiative and has also secured substantial EU regeneration funding, although unfortunately the results of this funding are still to be seen anywhere in Gran Alacant. What is needed now is a commitment from elected public authorities that they understand the scale of the problem and will invest our taxes and resources accordingly. We have the knowledge, we have EU funds and we still have time, what is needed is citizens and politicians working together to protect businesses, people and the planet.

SPANISH GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES GRANTS WORTH €400K FOR DAMAGE BY DANA VALENCIAN ANIMAL SHELTERS
Middle of November, Spanish Government approved a €390,000 grant for those animal shelters in Valencia and surrounding areas which were damaged or destroyed by last October DANA (cold drop). This is the first time those kind of associations receive such an important official help. The purpose of this money is to rebuild damaged or destroyed facilities and also to provide care to all abandoned or lost animals which live in those shelters, and of course, to face the real danger for public health that uncontrolled animals is.
Heavy rain and floods have totally destroyed 10 shelters at Valencian Ribera Alta area. It’s impossible to know exactly how many animals are been damaged or killed in this tragedy, but they estimate about 1000.
People volunteering at those shelters had to evacuate all the resident animals quickly, and in some cases the task was done while walls, fences and kennels were being knocked down by the power of the water.
Damaged animals (the damage was mostly fractures), were treated urgently by volunteer Vet practices.
And so started a great solidarity movement: lots of volunteers picking and fostering pets at their homes; sports clubs offering their facilities as temporary shelters for pets; Vet practices offering their services
for free; and spontaneous search-and-find services at social network for lost pets (it is estimated that, till Nov 12 th , about 200 pets have been returned to their homes).
Apart from this, there have been lots of donations consisting of pet food, medicines, cat litter, etc, and Valencian Veterinary College and local University Vet Schools have started helping with medical treatments, and also providing some valuable help to our Valencian colleagues, since not less than 27 Vet practices have been totally devastated.
Solidarity is always welcome and very appreciated. If anybody wants to help destroyed Valencian animal shelters, there is some info about it at Valencian Veterinary College website. Unfortunately, last lethal floods left a patch of animal, human and environmental tragedies which need urgent help. Be careful with donations, because there are some swindlers at the Internet who want to take an advantage from the tragedy. Only trust official bodies (for example, Vet Colleges) and NGO’s such as Red Cross.
Let’s fight against fake news, hoaxes and misinformation. They have already done enough damage.
Merry Christmas and happy 2025 to everybody!
Gran Alacant’s ELCHE CF SUPPORTERS GROUP
A group of international fans in Gran Alacant regularly watch Elche football games. Home matches see the group move around different bars in GA, with the usual bars used being London Tavern at the GA Centre while Tommy’s is the regular spot up the hill. The group, primarily made up of 19 season ticket holders who sit together, arranges carsharing to get to the ground in time for some pre-match beers and food before returning to GA afterwards.
Tickets can be purchased via the club website at www.elchecf.es and there is also the occasional spare ticket available through the group as well.
Jornadas in Spain have games all spread out with each match being televised. It is normal for the date and time of matches to not be announced until 2 to 5 weeks beforehand.
An inconsistent start to the season has still left Elche within reach of the top of the table and an escape from Segunda - the second division of Spanish football. Hopes remain that, similar to last year, an improvement in form brings a real promotion push from the winter onwards.
Home games in December are against Cadiz on Friday 6th at 21:00, and then Santander midweek of w/c 16th - date and time TBC.
Find the group on Facebook at ‘Peña Elche CF de Gran Alacant’ ¡Mucho Elche!
GA SOCIAL CYCLISTS
There is a vibrant group of social cyclists in Gran Alacant who meet up outside of Molly Malones most days of the week at around 10:00am.
We ride hybrid and off road bikes, are of varying ages, fitness levels and both sexes and usually cycle the rural roads and paths around Gran Alacant, Santa Pola and Elche which means 12 – 25 miles per ride.
Fitter, stronger cyclists can opt to take different routes but, we always meet up at a designated stop for a coffee, and importantly, a natter. Sometimes the group is just two cyclists, whilst other times it can be as many as 10-12 and as a testament to the group, in the years we have been meeting, many strong friendships have been formed.
As we don’t all live in Gran Alacant we communicate via a Whatsapp Group so it is best to check on the Whatsapp group who is around and who is going out on any particular day.
If you want to join us please contact us on Whatsapp: 00353 / 87 991 6020

GRAN ALACANT RUNNERS
THE (CONTINUING) ADVENTURES OF THE GRAN ALACANT RUNNERS - WE ARE STILL AROUND!
I have to start, as always with the weather, well, after all I am British, but as the awful weather in northern Europe brings more people here to Gran Alacant, there has been a succession of friends going out running on the streets of GA and Arenales, which is always great to see. Also, there are three new additions to the group, Richard, Hayley and David. Eileen, Gilda and Hayley recently met up for a couple of runs but unfortunately Richard just missed them, however he did meet up with Julie for a run before she went back to Scotland. David ran a 5km event in San Juan and then another 5km in Alicante.
I started by talking about the weather. Our heart felt good wishes go out to our friends and neighbours from Valencia. What we saw unfold before us was truly dreadful and will not be forgotten. In recognition of the tragedy The Regional Ministry announced the cancellation of the VI edition of La Gran Carrera Mediterraneo 21km run from Alicante to Santa Pola due on 10 th November which would have come through Urbanova, Arenales and GA before ending in Santa Pola. We stand in solidarity with those affected by the DANA.
Don’t forget, if you see us in Gran Alacant join us for a run or say hello. No matter your ability, if you are visiting the area and want to run with someone, please get in touch on 00447476851356.
GA WOMENS WALKING FOOTBALL
A NEW HOBBY FOR THE NEW YEAR?
The Women’s Walking Football sessions have persisted throughout the year and numbers of participants continue to increase. Many of our members have not played the game before, but once persuaded to give it a try, they are hooked. It is an excellent way to meet new people, exercise, lose weight and have fun. We are a multi national group with members from Belgium, the UK, Australia and Argentina. We aim to continue our recruitment drive into the new year and hope to persuade others to join us.
2025 will see us welcome other teams to join us for friendly games and of course our (now annual) match against the Men’s Walking Football squad later in the year.
What a month for the Gran Alacant Walking Football Group! We had a massive 25 players one week and although some members are off home for the festive period, we are continuing to see good numbers and competitive games.
In addition, we had our AGM at Happy Pizzeria. Thanks to all who came along. Again this was well attended and we have to thank Happy and his staff for looking after such a big group.
Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! If you wish to take part, we meet each Wednesday at 11am on the outdoor astroturf pitch at the GA Sports Centre (Polideportivo). The cost is only 1€ per session. Please arrive around 10.50am to allow for teams to be arranged. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have members from several countries with players’ ages ranging from early 50s to over 70. In addition, there are regular social meets (combined with the women’s group) with partners welcome too. So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch.
Walking football is well-established in the area. As well as our Wednesday group (GAWF) and the women’s group, there is the opportunity to play most weekdays between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola.
For members, please keep an eye on the Whatsapp group or the Facebook page for information regarding upcoming social events.

Hi, my name is Geoff and I have been asked by Lou to challenge you every month with a few teasers. I hope you enjoy them.
I first came to GA in 2001 and bought my house in 2002 where I have been a regular visitor ever since. You will see me at the quizzes, or out and about, running or cycling. If you see me come and say hi, or, just give me a cheery hello. I am also a big lover of live music and try to see as many live acts as I can.
