GET YOUR MESSAGE ACROSS

COMMUNICATION MAJORS

If you love working with people, a degree in communication is a great place to start. Whether it’s conflict resolution in the community, corporate negotiations, communicating through the mass media via public relations and advertising, or working with the latest multimedia technologies, Bond University will give you all the tools you need to bring your ambition to life.

Advertising Advertising is the creation and delivery of specific messages by appealing to an audience visually, experientially and textually. The field incorporates creative design, copy writing, market analysis, media selection and account management. This course focuses on advertising as not just a small component of a broad-based communication degree but as its own specialist area.

Studies in communication offer a broad set of skills that can be adapted to a wide range of careers in almost every industry sector. At the heart of it all, communication is about engaging people, getting your message across and understanding the messages of others. This is seen in many fields, including the rapidly expanding interactive entertainment industry, advertising and public relations organisations or in television, newspapers and radio. It could be in a corporate or legal setting, negotiating contracts or managing human resources. It could be in a government department devising new social policies, or promoting the latest computer games. Bond’s communication degrees give you the opportunity to explore all of these options and more. You can tailor a broad-based communication qualification by selecting one or two majors in a specific area of interest or major in communication as part of other degrees.

You will be introduced to the foundations of advertising and will become proficient in the utilisation of core principles in advertising practice. This knowledge becomes the foundation for more advanced processes including campaign research strategies, direct response, creative processes, media strategies (including the interactive environment) and advertising in the global marketplace. You will have a comprehensive understanding of integrated marketing communications and advertising’s role in the communication process through interactive tasks. These include the preparation of case studies, developing entire advertising campaigns, engaging with commercial clients and the opportunity to speak with industry professionals. You will actively engage in marketing communication challenges where you will research markets, devise strategies, plan tactics and make competitive team pitches to real clients.

Our graduates are now working with leading advertising agencies, as award-winning investigative journalists, in public relations consultancies, marketing roles and more. The first hand experience, industry contacts and practical knowledge graduates gained at Bond put them ahead of the competition when it came to applying for jobs. Whatever pathway you choose, you’ll find that your communication qualifications are in great demand in the workplace, both here in Australia and all over the world.

Communication and Media In the tradition of liberal education, communication and media studies offers students an opportunity to explore the complex world of human interaction with a critical eye. Communication and media are challenging fields for both study and work. The complexity of human communication requires understanding and analytic professionals. A rapidly developing body of academic literature looks at the many roles of communication and the media, and the issues they raise about life in the 21st century. For students seeking advanced careers in a range of communication and media professions, a flexible study major allows students to explore the field more deeply. Majors are also available in the areas of Journalism and Film and Television within some degrees. Please see the relevant pages within this brochure and visit www.bond.edu.au/hss for course structures. Corporate Communication A growing number of Australia’s top managers and executives see communication as central to facilitating the operation of organisations and positioning them with a leading edge as they reconfigure themselves for a global environment and redefine the products and services they can provide. Future managers and corporate communication leaders must understand the processes for creating, accessing and delivering communication services. They need to know how communication relates to corporate and organisational strategy. Students undertaking corporate communication will study areas such as conflict resolution, crisis and risk management and interpersonal, intercultural, gender and organisational communication among other corporate communication areas.

Public Relations Public relations is one of the fastest growing industries in today’s corporate environment. This field involves a combination of communication activities and press coverage, designed to enhance the prestige or goodwill of a company’s product or an individual. The Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences offers an exciting practical course designed to familiarise students with the public relations industry and the key roles and responsibilities of public relations practitioners. You will have the opportunity to develop and apply a variety of skills through the creation of, and participation in, actual public relations event simulations and activities. These include writing speeches, managing crises, writing press releases, developing online brochures, researching and writing a campaign document and running simulated press conferences. Bond provides students with knowledge of community relations, employee relations, media relations, multicultural communication, issue and crisis management, executive speech training and organisational relationship management. Offering comprehensive courses in this dynamic career, we maintain an excellent relationship with the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA), the public relations industry’s leading professional body, and have the largest number of PRIA accredited programs in Australia.
