ATLAS OF DECAY: ANALYSIS OF FIRE
PROJECT 2:
ATLAS OF DECAY: ANALYSIS OF FIRE
YEAR : BAS HONOURS 2021
BRIEF
Can we begin to imagine a world after ruination and what it would look? We identified and analysed fire as a present product of ruination in Johannesburg's postcolonial context.
Site Location : London Rd, Alexandra Johannesburg Abel Rd,Hilbrow Johannesburg
CONCEPT
As a result of the lack of fire prevention and fire fighting infrastructure in Johannesburg, many households, buildings and communities are left destitute by frequent fires. The project utilises Forensic Architecture to investigate recent significant fires in Johannesburg’s CBD and informal settlements.
From there, I interrogated current methods of fire escape within the city as they have proven ineffective in ensuring safe passage for all residents in the event of a fire and proposed fire escape slides as an additional means of escape. The fire escape slides would also act as a daily circulation through an elevated promenade. That connects activities, and businesses within, around and under the buildings.

MIXED-USED RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
YEAR : BAS 2019
To propose a mixed-use urban village with student accommodation, apartment units and a commercial ground floor.
Site Location: Rick Turners Rd, Durban
Proposal Area: 2700 sqm
BRIEF CONCEPT
The proposal provides a building that expands across the site allowing the commercial spaces to spill into multiple communal areas around the building.
In response to the already dynamic student culture in and around the UKZN Howard College campus, the building’s design encourages interaction between the residents, visitors and the building.
Multi-layered roof terraces soften the contrast between build form and landscape. They also allow visitors to distinguish between public and private functions.
From the residential wing, the inhabitants' view of the layered roof garden extends toward and connects to the green hills of the UKZN landscape.

PROJECT 4: COMMUNITY CENTRE
YEAR : BAS 2019
BRIEF
To propose a community centre for the Bulwer neighbourhood
Site Location : Bulwer Rd, Durban
Proposal Area : 300 sqm
CONCEPT
The proposal celebrates the vibrant culture of the Bulwer community and satisfies the apparent desire for freedom of artistic expression. The existing site sits next to the NSA Gallery, which is the beating heart of art, architecture and history in the context of Durban.
The form maintains the natural pedestrian route through the site. Solid planes divide different functions and serve as blank canvases for local artists to paint on. The building is not only a community hall but an outdoor gallery and promenade that partners with the adjacent NSA gallery to bring the area to its full potential
