When I Am Big

“I can do almost everything, but I’m not allowed. I know what I want, but I can’t reach it!”

To be small can be terribly inconvenient. Unpractical and unfair. The things you want from the top shelf are hopelessly far away, and even though you are so wise, and have thought something out so well, suddenly grown-ups can come and just take over. But imagine if you grew taller than the treetops! If nobody could say “no” and “not now” anymore. How would things be then?

In Maria Nilsson Thore’s illustrated gem When I am Big, a child grows and gets to try out how grown-up life can be. It is powerful, exciting, and fun, it turns out, although there are some good things about being small too…

When I am Big is a story about growing, about making decisions and try things for yourself – and about sometimes shrinking and becoming small again. It is all told through Maria Nilsson Thore’s unmistakably playful and flowing watercolour illustrations and her spot-on language. Delicate, cleverly quirky and with Maria Nilsson Thore’s ever-present children’s perspective.

Opposites

Same and Alike, but Contrary

What is the opposite? Same and alike, but contrary! Tall – short, fast – slow, dry – wet. In Mia Nilsson’s world, the pairs of opposites hold so much more than the reader might initially think: Birds on the run, Olle who picks blueberries and an ice cream queue that is seemingly endless. Short, witty texts that have drawn inspiration from haiku poetry, and illustrations that almost seem to explode from the pages depict small moments where the opposites take the story in unexpected directions.

Mia Nilsson is an illustrator, animator, and writer, born in Skåne but living in Stockholm. Mia studied at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London and has since graduating worked for a variety of clients, mainly in the UK and Sweden, but also in the US, India, and Norway.

The Dark Tales of Lillebror Rabbit

Step into the dark world of Lillebror Rabbit and his family, w ritten and illustrated by Jonna Björnstjerna.

These are scary tales for 3–6 year olds… but they are also wonderful! The Dark Tales of Lillebror Rabbit are set in a fairy tale-esque world where things are not just exciting and captivating, but also deal with things that may feel scary and how to overcome fear. Come along for adventures with three-headed trolls, aliens, and grumpy, unlucky, old men.

Jonna Björnstjerna invites readers to these cosy thrillers for the youngest readers. Her illustrations invoke thoughts of both Edward Gorey and John Bauer and she herself cites Julie Doucet and Tim Burton as great inspirations. In her version of stories for children, with elements of both the scary and romanticism, the results are fantastic, fun, and personal stories where we all can recognise ourselves! She has even been called the Stephen King for the youngest readers (Petter Lindgren, Aftonbladet).

The somewhat surrealistic stories are about courage and daring to do things that might be a bit scary, but they always end happily. The stories also have heaps of humour, excitement, and detailed rich illustrations with lots to look at and discuss. Twice awarded with the best picture book by Bokjuryn (where the children themselves vote for their favourites).

Besides the main series, Björnstjerna has also written an introduction to the Enchanted forest with the The Flora & Fauna of Wonderwoods. There, Lillebror Rabbit guides the reader through pretty glades, all while encountering fascinating monsters, mean little elves and terrifying creatures and plants!

Series name The Dark Tales of Lillebror Rabbit • Original title Sagan om Familjen Kanin och Döingarnas dag • Author & illustrator Jonna Björnstjerna  • Format 195 x 260mm, 32 pages, colour • Rights sold series Catalan, Chinese, Danish, Finnish, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Spanish

Day of the Dead

THE DARK TALES OF LILLEBROR RABBIT:

It is finally time for All Hallows Eve, or The Day of the Dead, as it is called in the Fairy Tale Forest. It is the day when regular rabbits, gnomes and trolls can visit their graves in The Valley of the Dead without being chased by vampires or a hungry zombie. The mayor has ordered extra meat, blood, and delicious brains so the inhabitants of the valley will not be struck by hunger and go after some poor creature. But because of a gang of “cool” types, and, to some extent, the contents of Little Brother Rabbit’s candy bag, things don’t go quite according to plan!

This is the eleventh book about The Dark Tales of Lillebror Rabbit in Wonderwoods! A wonderful and fairytale-esque place that is lovely but also a little bit scary…

Saga Stories

The million-copy bestselling children’s book series: Welcome to Saga’s wonderful world!

Meet Saga Louisa Larsson, a steady, wise and stubborn girl who lives on Sunflower Lane. She lives there with her mom, who struggles with allergies, and a dad who is stressed a lot. In fun, quirky and moving stories, we get to know Saga and her best friend Samir, and their everyday life. Together they explore life just as it is: going to the hairdresser, dressing up for Halloween, or the day she draws everything she knows beginning with the letter ‘E’. Other days Saga just lay flat on her stomach watching the world on a glowing globe.

In situations both big and small, children can recognize themselves in Saga’s world, and get to understand their emotions just a little bit better. Josefine Sundström’s quirky, yet wise, stories are illustrated by Emma Göthner’s colourful pictures, that perfectly accompany the text, and makes it easier for the beginner reader to follow along.

Sagasagor has been adapted to tv series, been an incredibly popular radio adaptation, and sold over a million copies across the series in Sweden alone. This make Saga Stories one of Sweden’s most famous and popular children’s book series.

Read together. The Competition

He rolls straight towards the big road where all the cars are driving...

In the Read Together-series about Saga, the stories are extra thrilling. The adult reads the main part of the text, but on every spread, there are short phrases that are easy to read, written in big letters, that the child can help read aloud.

The Read Together-series fills the gap between read aloud books and books for children to read by themselves. The book also contains an alphabet and two spreads with facts about crosswalks and reflectors.
