What Not to Miss on the Eastern Coastline of Taiwan Though Taiwan may seem to be a small island surrounded by blue waters, there is surely a lot to see. There is much not to miss on the eastern coastline of Taiwan, and many of these gems are easily reached. I spent most of my time in Taiwan working my way down the coastline, from one city to the next, finding beautiful sights and places to experience along the way. Whether it was natural gorges running with crystal waters, a bustling city with a hip coffee scene, or scenic views along a lush shoreline, Taiwan’s eastern coastline is a must see.

Here’s what not to miss on the eastern coastline of Taiwan:
Taroko National Park
This is one of the most visited sights in Taiwan and for good reason. The marbled walls of the gorge stretches through lush paths, where crystal blue waters rush through. It’s an easy day trip from Hualien City, and you could easily spend the entire day there. My tips would be to take the Taroko Route 1133a if you want to use public transportation or hire a driver for the day for a more tailored trip. The best hiking trail for an easy scenic view is the Shakadang Trail and the Yanzikou. Be sure to stop by the visitor center to get all the information you will need for the day. Also to note, most of the food is either at Tianxiang or at the visitors center.

Hualien City

Taitung
This is one of those smaller cities and a great home base to explore the south of Taiwan. I’d recommend a night or two here as they have a small night market and I loved how small the city was. There’s plenty to do nearby as well.

Sanxiantai
A good afternoon day trip to see the iconic eight arch bridge that goes to an island off the coast. Sunset is especially magical here.

Luye Highliands
If you’re a tea lover, than this is the place for you. I’d recommend a stop here in the morning to see the views, try local tea, and enjoy the tradition of tea growing in a local farm.

Chishang
One of the most scenic areas in the eastern part of Taiwan, is the golden rice fields of Chishang. There’s the famous Mr. Brown’s Avenue where there are no telephone poles and incredibly beautiful. I’d recommend renting a bike outside of the station to see the area and stopping for lunch at the Chishang Lunchbox Museum.
