Some of you might know us. Some of you may not. But lets get one thing clear first. We don’t like fur.We never have. As kids we sang along to a popular Dutch song saying we would never wear a second hand coat. As angry teens we rallied against the slaughter of baby seals covering ourselves in fake blood. Now in our early somethings, we have the creepy feeling that we’ve been too content and busy with making our own individual choices without saying out loud what we believe in, while the fur industry has been making a roaring comeback. So we decided to do something about it.Who are we? We are Jojanneke van der Veer better known as DJ Wannabeastar and Femke Dekker of My Little Underground and we are the founders of Fur Free. Our love for nightlife, music, art, fashion and animals brought us together to start Fur Free in alliance with the Dutch non-profit organization Bont Voor Dieren (Fur for Animals). Now we would have happily chained ourselves to a mink cage again but we decided to take a different route: A fashionable and positive statement showing you how beautiful fash-
ion can be without being cruel to animals or damaging to our environment. It all started with a simple statement last summer when we handed out flyers at the Amsterdam Fashion Week stating that audiences had just attended a fur free fashion show. And now we’re back with this beautiful publication we made together with the wonderful folks at Glamcult. On top of that we have five amazing fur free showpieces on exhibit at the Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam created by Holland’s most forward fashion-designers who wholly support our cause: Bas Kosters, And Beyond, Antoine Peters, Hester Vlamings and LEW.This unique exhibition was styled by the internationally acclaimed Caroline Fuchs and Maarten Spruyt. The list of Fur Free fashion designers joining us in our pledge is ever growing and we are so pleased to see how many of you fashion lovers feel the same. There is no need for animals to be bred, caged and killed just for their skin and our esthetic pleasure. We truly hope you will enjoy what we worked so hard on for these past few months. Don’t forget to check our
website frequently, www.furfreefashion.net, to watch exclusive interviews with the designers, fur free fashion news and more upcoming events. Because we won’t be silenced until fashion will indeed be fur free. With love, Jojanneke & Femke (Nightlife fun upside down musical fashionistic harassers and entrepreneur volunteers for Bont Voor Dieren). Dutch Fashion Award winner Bas Kosters has created a showpiece with an underlying message: “A playful and sexy bunny-suit including a pair of mandatory bunny-ears. I love the little twist that it turns the wearer of the piece into an animal. For the presentation we also made a doll in the same outfit, which adds another dimension; the wearer represent an animal and wears her own skin. I had so much fun creating this piece.”
Design duo And Beyond literally created an eye-catching showpiece. “What bothers us the most about fur is the ignorance. We wanted to create a design, which would appeal to a fashion audience and at the same time deliver a message regarding the fur industry.”
Hester Vlamings is an acclaimed footweardesigner from Amsterdam. The inspiration for her Teddycoat is her stepdaughter who loves cuddly bears more than anything.
Kim Leemans and Merel Wicker, who together form the duo LEW, love fur as long as it is attached to its original owner. “With all the knowledge we have today about the fur-industry, there really is no beauty to be found in fur. And of course we as designers are more than aware that there are a lot of wrongdoings within the textile industry as well, but we try to work as sustainable as we possibly can and not working with fur is a very easy first step to take in that direction.”
Antoine Peters, known for his uplifting designs, went against his good-natured instincts and created a crying coat from fake fur from Fur-Textiles. “I always have two rules when dressing myself: I never wear black and I never wear fur.”
