Book-It Repertory Theatre’s 2015-16 Season

When you experience Book-It, you get a magical synthesis of literature and theatre. Over 25 years, those merged worlds have become a community where Seattle artists tell the stories that thrill us, stretch our minds, and pound our hearts. All that time the author’s words have been front and center, and we take our responsibility to the source material—and to your experience of it—very seriously. Please join us as we embark on our next 25 years. Our Silver Jubilee season closed with a recordbreaking, critically acclaimed adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five. The 2015-16 season launches with an all-new version of What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, Northwest author Raymond Carver’s incisive exploration of contemporary American love and longing. We’ve made room for sparkling romance and joyful endings with a holiday revival of Jane Austen’s Emma. Last year’s Pride and Prejudice was a sold-out smash, so order your tickets early before they’re gone. Since we’re solidly twentysomething now, we’re totally game to flex our “bold and daring” muscles with a brand-new, two-part telling of The Brothers K, Oregon native David James Duncan’s poignant epic set in Camas, Washington and rooted in the allAmerican pastime of baseball. Book-It’s first 25 years is an astonishing story in itself, authored in partnership between a talented company and an engaged community. We look forward to composing with you the next chapter in the Amazing Adventures of Book-It Repertory Theatre. Welcome to another breathtaking Book-It season!

A Collection of Stories from Our Repertory

WHAT WE TALK ABOUT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT LOVE

by Raymond Carver

ADAPTED & DIRECTED BY JANE JONES Two couples sit around a table, drink gin, and discuss what it means to love someone. What they reveal will have you unable to look away. Raymond Carver’s What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, featured in 2014’s Oscar-winning Birdman, is paired with “Cathedral,” “Intimacy,” and “The Student’s Wife.” Book-It wowed mainstage audiences with this collection during 1998-99. Carver, who lived in Port Angeles, depicts ordinary people in “dirty realism” as they contend with life the best way they can.

Celebrating the Novel’s 200th Anniversary

EMMA

by Jane Austen

ADAPTED BY RACHEL ATKINS // DIRECTED BY CAROL ROSCOE Emma Woodhouse has “rather too much her own way,” and while she is beautiful and charming, she is oblivious to the true nature of almost everyone in her sphere, including herself. Until, of course, she falls in love. We happily mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of Emma this December with a holiday showing of this delightful fan favorite (BookIt premiere, 2009) filled with Miss Austen’s droll descriptions, ironic observations, and oh-so-happy endings. Originally produced by Book-It Repertory Theatre in 2009, directed by Marcus Goodwin.

A World-Premiere Adaptation of a Beloved Northwest Novel

THE BROTHERS K

by David James Duncan

PART ONE: JOY TO THE WORDL!

PART TWO: THE LEFT STUFF

ADAPTED & DIRECTED BY MYRA PLATT

New York Times Notable Book (1992) American Library Association Best Books Award The fastball-hurling Hugh Chance of Camas, Washington aims for the major leagues, but a mill accident alters his dreams. Amid the turbulent ’60s, his sons—the four brothers of the title — come of age viewing life through a baseball lens and wondering if the family’s lot in life really is “God’s will,” as their mother believes. The New York Times called this novel a “tear-jerking, thigh-slapping homage to Dostoyevsky” and a “celebration of the American family.” David James Duncan, author of The River Why (Book-It, 2010), loads the emotional bases in The Brothers K, and Book-It-philes will delight in our two-part, double-header production.
