Decorating cookies is a simple and fun activity to engage in with children of a wide variety of ages. If you'd like to add a little "wow" factor to cookie decorating, you might like to try these puppet cookies. STEP ONE Make up a basic cookie dough that is able to be rolled out and cut with cutters. STEP TWO Roll dough out to desired thickness (I would recommend approximately 1/4 inch) STEP THREE Cut dough into circles (a large scone cutter works well for this). You can also experiment with other shapes if you desire STEP FOUR Carefully insert pop-sticks (wooden ice block sticks) into the side of each uncooked cookie circle. To do this, I recommend you place a hand carefully on top of the cookie dough to ensure the stick doesn't accidentally poke through the top of the cookie as it's sliding into the dough. STEP FIVE Bake cookies as normal (until they are a pale golden color) STEP SIX Make up icing in desired colors. You can stick with one color or make up several colors to allow choice of color and even multiple colors on the one puppet cookie. STEP SEVEN Decorate with an assortment of candy. Some suggested candies include:
candy teeth jelly beans smarties or similar skittles and other small round candy lolly snakes chocolate drops licorice allsorts sprinkles small cake decorating candies
The bigger the variety of candy given, the broader the imaginations of creation will be. Look for candy which can be used for facial features as well as animal features and mythical creatures. You can also cut soft candy to give a wider variety of shapes and sizes. The finished products are limited only by the imaginations of those participating. Photographs of some finished puppet cookies can be seen at the blog mentioned below.
