Pasta is a much loved food worldwide, finding its place onto nearly every plate. From Asia to Europe to the Americas, everyone has found interesting and innovative uses for pasta. Pasta stores well, it can be made into many different kinds of food. It's also generally inexpensive and quite filling. There are so many benefits to using pasta in cooking that it's hard to think of them all. And even though some people think pasta isn't very healthy, there are many kinds of whole grain pastas that are available that might challenge that thinking altogether. Pasta is a flexible food. It can be used in soups, as a main dish, in appetizers and more. The best pasta types to use in soups are orzo, bow tie, ditilini, small shells or even small macaroni elbows. For main dishes, most people like to use larger noodles such as lasagna noodles, spaghetti, linguini, manicotti or large shells that can be stuffed. One could essentially use pasta in every meal but get a different taste based on what is added to it, from cream sauces to tomato sauces, the dish is only limited by one's imagination. Pasta stores well which adds to its usefulness. Dried pasta can be purchased and stored for a fair amount of time without going bad. It's easy to purchase many containers to store each type of pasta in and keep them in the cupboard. Storage containers can keep your food safe from any bug problems that might occur and having dried pasta on hand is great for unexpected company or even disaster preparedness. Pasta is inexpensive which may be why it's used so heavily throughout the world. Large families or families on a budget can afford pasta. Many packages of pasta are under $2.00 which is very affordable. Add a little tomato sauce and vegetables and you've got a complete meal for a family of four for under $5.00. While it may seem Spartan to some, many families are thankful for the extra savings that pasta can bring. Pasta is a filling starch much like bread, rice or potatoes. Shown at the bottom of the food pyramid, Americans are encouraged to have 6 - 11 servings of starches a day as part of a healthy diet. A a cup of cooked pasta is considered one serving. An adult might easily eat 2 or 3 servings of pasta at dinner time as that translates to 1 or 1 cups of pasta. Just because pasta is inexpensive doesn't mean that it has to be boring! With so many kinds of pasta available, you can make many kinds of fun and interesting foods. Asian recipes might include stir fried vegetables with chicken or shrimp. Mediterranean recipes might include slow simmered tomato sauces with herbs and spices. Americans love to add pasta to casserole dishes. Thousands of combinations exist, with creative recipes to suit nearly every taste. Of course, if you prefer plain old macaroni and cheese or ramen style soup noodles, we won't stop you.
