Traditionally, an accountant’s main role in small business has been to make sure that business owners comply with tax obligations, and once a year they would be tasked with reconciling their client’s books. But over the last decade that reality is changing, with the role of the accountant transforming from compliance to advisory services. With innovative technology that automates much of the traditional accounting work – SMEs are now looking to accountants for more than just bookwork. The latest MYOB SME Snapshot survey reveals that almost half (48 per cent) of business owners are turning to their accountants for advice. Regardless of industry or size of business, the accountant or bookkeeper is usually the first port of call for businesses seeking assistance or advice in challenging financial situations. When thinking about who to turn to, 13 per cent of SMEs consult in their bank managers, 9 per cent call on their spouse or partner, 6 percent turn to their family, and just 1 percent
