s 4HE LAST WEEK COVERED IN The Canadian Book Market 2015 is the week ending Jan. 10, 2016. The last week of 2016 is the week ending Jan. 1, 2017.

s 4HIS TERM REFERS TO A lXED GROUP of approximately 665 stores that have consistently submitted sales data since 2013.

s 4HIS REPORT CONTAINS PRINT BOOK sales only. Ebook sales are not included. s 4HE FOCUS IN ON %NGLISH LANGUAGE trade book sales; other markets, such as education, are not represented. s DATA HAS BEEN UPDATED since The Canadian Book Market 2016. Updates to bibliographic data can cause the volume and value of sales to change from the previous edition of this publication.

Contents include: s COMPARATIVE DATA FROM and 2017 for over 50 subject categories, including the top sellers in 2017 for each category; as well as, s MARKET SHARE GRAPHS BY publisher and distributor, price-point analysis, and performance by publication date.

s 4OTALS FOR #OMPARABLE 3TORES DO not reflect totals for the whole market but allow for a more accurate view of year-over-year market and individual category fluctuations. s 4HE GROUP OF RETAILERS INCLUDED in our Comparable Stores data was updated for 2017 to include more retailers. As a result, this may cause differences when comparing data with previous editions of this publication.

Many thanks: I would be remiss not to extend my thanks to Pamela Millar, Director of Customer Relations, for ushering this edition of The Canadian Book Market out the door. She worked diligently compiling numbers, reviewing graphs, and finally putting it all together in a cohesive manner. Thanks also to Shimona Hirchberg, BookNet Research Intern, for spending numerous hours making all the graphs look just right, and to Bill Holt, BookNet DBA, for extracting all the data. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the ongoing support of the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Canada Book Fund, which made this publication possible. Sincerely, Noah Genner President & CEO, BookNet Canada

Also, included in this report, for the first time, is some top-level data from our Canadian Book Consumer research panel. By including this data, we hope to give you a more complete picture of the English-language book market in Canada.
