Metal
Wood
The development of architectural materials has lasted for thousands of years, and sheet metal has been extensively used in architecture, like aluminium sheet, aluminium-plastic panel, colour steel plate, copper plate, and stainless steel plate, as there are multiple advantages: it is environment-friendly due to its high recovery rate; its diversification in colours and forms enables various complex geometric patterns and textures; its weatherability and durability can adapt to most buildings’ requirements. It is also capable of achieving different visual effects: smooth aluminium sheet and stainless steel plate reflect the beauty of modern technology, while copper plate realises the integration of the present and the past. There are four chapters in the book: steel, aluminium, copper and zinc. Each chapter is further classified by specific forms of metal.
As a typical element of traditional Chinese architecture, wood was extensively used in urban design, building groups and single buildings in the past. Nowadays, modern timber architecture is emerging all over the world. As an environment-friendly, natural and simple material, timber gains popularity in architectural design again. The book introduces different types of wood, each illustrated with specific cases, which are analysed through real-scene photos, detailed drawings and informative text. Through this well-organised book, readers will get a comprehensive understanding about the application of wood in architectural design.

Glass
Concrete
The history of glassmaking can be traced back to 3500BC in Mesopotamia and it is the Romans who first used glass in architecture. With the development of technology, glass has become a common material in contemporary architecture. We have glass ceramics, polished wire glass, groove glass, glass tiles ... With increasingly diversified surface treatments such as enameling, acid embossing, sandblasting and screen printing, there seems to be endless choices for architectural design. The book introduces various glass types and showcases their application with carefully selected projects.
Concrete usually gives the impression of being rough, cold and grey. Therefore, how to make it more friendly and acceptable to the public is an important issue in architectural design. Many architects have made positive attempts. For example, the mixed use of concrete and wood or metal will make concrete more accessible. In addition, the perfection and abstraction of concrete will attract those familiar with modern arts as well. The book approaches the use of concrete in architecture from a new perspective. Through presentation and analysis of the latest projects, you will gain a new understanding of this traditional material and get inspirations as well.

Masonry
Advanced Materials
Brick and stone have been used in architecture for a long time and are favoured by architects due to their unique properties. In recent years, with the development of science and technology, the variety of brick and stone has been extended and updated continuously, which contributes greatly to the creation of distinct architectural features. The book discusses masonry in two sections addressing brick and stone respectively, and goes further into detailed classification. The projects are elaborately selected and analysed, each presented with photos, drawings and narratives. As a summary of the state quo and future of the application of brick and stone in architecture, the book is intended to provide a comprehensive, new understanding of masonry in the 21st century.
Advanced materials developed with better performance than traditional ones, such as ‘powergenerating and breathing’ membrane, ‘self-cleaning’ carbon fibre structure and energy-saving photovoltaic panel, have found their way into architecture. The book covers a wide range of state-of-the-art materials and discusses their application and future development in architectural design. As a practical referential book with dozens of exemplary projects, it provides readers with a comprehensive understanding about the current application of advanced materials in architecture.

Architecture & Passive Design
Juan M. Otxotorena Architecture 2000-2015
Passive energy-saving technology uses nonmechanical equipment interventions to reduce a building’s energy consumption. The book selects various cases to analyse their energy-saving features and shows readers some most representative passive energy-saving technologies at present, including rational orientation, building construction, building envelope, and openings for natural ventilation. It leads readers to have a comprehensive view of passive architecture from programming to design.
Things are evolving at breakneck speed. The fashions of today have expired tomorrow; and even this logic of fashion, as we see and experience now, could have its days counted. Lately, architecture undergoes the fascination of the virtual and the immaterial: the spectacular, the iconic and ephemeral; but probably it will end calling in the various dimensions of its original anchor in physical reality. An anchor that, like it or not, shares with ourselves, in terms of extreme radicalism, given our bodily dimension. In short, we are going to experience the last breath through of an experimental broad spectrum attitude longer than studied: one dominated by the logic of the excesses attitude, after which some calm will return. It should give way to a new focus on solid and inescapable values as efficiency, discipline, sustainability, preservation of the environment or the economy of means. It may have some new paradigms called to gain prominence; for example, the integral efficiency of territory management, the reversibility of its temporary occupation and its own flexibility, versatility and durability of architecture.

Detached Commercial Architecture
Urban Complex
In order to make an urban space function there has to be a strong identity behind it, be it at a neighbourhood, city, regional or national scale. It is important to have a cosmopolitan identity, mixing the local and the global, and taking into account the importance of each city’s heritage. All successful cities, considered from a multi-functional and integrated point of view, have a strong sense of identity and a lot of that has to do with ‘place making’ and making good use of their heritage and contemporary cultural activities, in one way or another. Building a new identity is not just about recovering the past or a city’s heritage, but it is, to an extent, about determining the city’s future.
The book focuses on the planning and design of commercial architecture that belongs to one brand. Nowadays companies tend to build single buildings for their own brands to highlight their brand value and characters. The book includes more than 20 amazing projects from different countries with various styles. These projects interpret basic architectural vocabulary of detached commercial buildings and demonstrate design principles comprehensively. Each project has its unique characteristics: some use unique forms and skillful colour palettes to give unique features to the buildings; some emphasise an integration with environment; some place the buildings in historical and cultural inheritance; some use new materials and reasonable texture to reinforce the expression; some focus on usability; some conform to contemporary requirements of less carbon footprint and energy saving … The content is divided into four parts: architecture with shopping environment, architectural forms and materials, colour, and eco-architecture. The projects are presented in combination with design guidelines, depicting the international status of detached commercial architecture in recent years. Design of Nursing Homes and Rehabilitation Facilities
General Hospitals Planning and Design
Nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities serve patients requiring preventive, therapeutic, and rehabilitative nursing care services for non-acute, longterm conditions. The service provider will focus on the well-being of patient’s motion and emotion. To provide a homelike therapeutic environment is the key challenge for the designers. How to integrate healing environment with healthy natural environment - green architecture is an unavoidable trend for the designers, also for healthcare facilities - is also what we talk about in this book. The 18 projects included in the book will show us how these architects and interior designers realise their unique concepts and create a homelike therapeutic environment.
General hospitals provide multidisciplinary healthcare service, so the design of general hospitals is comprehensive and distinctive, without any unchangeable model due to various operation policies and development orientations of the hospital. However, creating a flexible, healthy and sustainable environment is the basic principle for all healthcare designers to follow. The exterior and interior environment may influence professional staff and patients, and thus may have impact on speed of recovery. In the book, selected general hospital projects present innovative architectural and interior design as reference for designers and directors of healthcare facilities.

Specialised Hospitals Planning and Design
Fertile Cities
The consideration for designers of modern healthcare facilities is not only to provide a clean and efficient healthcare environment, and patients’ health, safety and emotions don’t depend on the staff’s professional skills only. The environment of a hospital also has its healing benefits, which has won more recognition nowadays. A specialised hospital focuses on one medical discipline, and thus for its space design, one must carefully consider the specialised medical and procedure model and patients’ special requirements. The children’s hospitals (pediatrics/ adolescent), women’s hospitals (obstetrics and gynecology), cancer centres (radiotherapy and chemotherapy) and mental health hospitals included in the book are places with healing functions, created by architects, interior designers, artists and healthcare staff together.
The book, via introduction to the 17 projects of Vincent Callebaut Architectures and its research theories, conveys the design ideas of Vincent Callebaut, a practitioner of sustainable architecture, who militates continuously for the ecosystematic development of new fertile cities of tomorrow by means of an investigation process mixing the biomorphism, the bionic and the biomimicry to information and communication technologies in order to create new eco-responsible lifestyles.

Urban Rail Transit Design Manual
The Guidelines on Resort Design
Stations play a vital role for passengers and nontravelling users alike. They serve the growing needs of an increasingly mobile population and are used by a wide range of users. Stations are also primarily a means of access to the national rail network, in turn acting as a gateway to or from other destinations. They have become increasingly important as destinations in their own right – as places to shop, work, or simply to meet family and friends. Most stations also function as interchange hubs, providing connections between different transport modes.
The worldwide travelling fever propelled the boom of resorts. The popular resorts attribute their success to the excellent architectural and interior design. Before designing an attractive resort, architects and interior designers should know about the basic knowledge and requirements of resort design. The book, through five parts of master planning, environment design, architectural design, swimming pool design and interior design, concludes the basic design elements for resort architecture and presents 20 amazing projects. It gives the reader useful guidance both from theory and practice.
With millions of journeys made by urban rail each day, designers should recognise the importance of its customers and the need to put passengers first. To ensure that the expectations of its customers are met in full, the design guide in this book places passengers at the forefront of the design process, acknowledging that all elements of station design should be considered to help meet their needs. The book also provides an overview of what a designer considers to be important in the planning and design of metro stations and light rail stations. It will be relevant to new or renovation projects as well as to major renewals or maintenance projects. SIZE: 215mm x 285mm COVER: Hard Cover PAGE: 272 RELEASE DATE: 2013.12 ISBN: 978-988-15661-0-2

The book illustrates the planning and design of mountain resorts from five aspects: site selection, layout design, landscape, architecture and interior design. It selects 25 typical mountain resorts, presenting their unique design styles and attractive features through beautiful pictures and detailed description.Â
Taking spa as its centre, the architecture and interior design of a spa resort aims at creating a relaxed, happy and healthy atmosphere for the guests. The book collects 40 spa resorts in Asia, Africa, Europe, America and Oceania, showing the unique styles of different spa resorts through detailed narratives and beautiful photos. These spa resorts are of different types and styles. There are tropical seaside resorts and scenic mountain resorts; modern luxury resorts and European classic resorts; spectacular large resorts and exquisite small resorts, all of which show the unique charm of spa resorts. With spa as its lightspot, each project is exhibited comprehensively and logically from its surroundings, landscapes, to the hotel architecture and interior design.

Research Building Planning and Design
Industrial Building Planning and Design
Research building is a comprehensive architectural structure, and it must meet requirements on aspects of functional area, technical equipment, economic cost and law. They represent innovative means of production - that is why the design of research building is always changing. The book presents that technical improvements are not necessarily the key to the design of great research buildings. The best research buildings position the researchers as the most creative agents in the process of scientific experiments. The building is not a machine which the scientists manipulate. It is a cultural construction with collaborative cohesion and creativity.

All too often, the design of contemporary industrial structures lacks a quality more than being just variations on the ‘big-box’ type, preferred for economy and efficiency, but only to a limited extent able to respond to context and the needs of users. In light of the current changes in the production sector, where sustainable approaches in everything from energy supply, material procurement and waste management challenge and redefine the very essence of the industrial sector, a similar new approach to industrial architectural design is also a chance to reinvent the way industry and environment can interact. The examples selected here touch on different aspects of using architectural quality to go further than the purely functional, by including bioclimatic aspects, workplace design and urban and landscape integration. They also show the possibilities of simply creating good design with modest means – with few exceptions, industrial architecture is created from low budgets and standardised components. This makes the challenge for the designer all the greater, and proves that architectural quality is not primarily driven by investment but by imagination and invention. Despite the numerous models and diversity of uses, the essence of community centres is that they support the development of socially sustainable communities by providing physical spaces to help address the social needs of a community. Planning issues such as size, scale and location are critical to creating successful community centres, and how these centres are designed and delivered is equally important. The book tells the overall principles and guidelines for successful community centre design by presenting the latest community centre projects all around the world with numerous photos and drawings.

Elements of Neo-Classical Style
As a collection of Neo-classical residences, the book showcases each project with pictures and drawings and explains the design ideas in detail. It is a great reference book for designers as well as homeowners who prefer Neo-classical style.
The elements of Neo-classical style are the elements that reflect Neo-classicism in modern living space. It could be as big as a solid Roman column, and as small as a beautifully carved artefact. These decorative substances can evoke imagination, cast visual impact, and reach the very inner part of the audience. They are not necessarily ‘vintage’, but they do convey the preciseness, solemnity, and luxury of Neo-classicism. Neoclassical elements present strict geometric patterns and are more or less hand carved, bringing the ambiance of solemn elegance and the ‘human’ factor into the interior. Therefore, Neo-classical style is given more consideration in today’s interior decorating industry.

Japanese Landscape Design
Unique Gardens
Like beauty, singularity is a very personal, indefinite, impalpable notion. Artists woo it or simply live it in order to express the difference of their approach to creation, to imagination. This notion nourishes itself daily on the exploration of unknown, strange, unusual horizons. Nature is not to be outdone, cultivating her own vegetable and mineral anomalies, with or without the help of humans. In the domain of the garden, in the widest sense of the term, singularity obviously goes beyond the aesthetics and the classic tendencies of landscape design, such as they have been defined across the centuries. Garden creators are personalities in their own right. Whether multi-media artists, landscapers, architects, musicians, designers or simply the guy next door, they have in common the willingness to cross agreed-upon rules and ideas.
The beauty of the Japanese garden lies in its combination of natural and artificial beauty. It represents the unique aesthetic taste of Japanese people, mainly because of the distinct seasons of the insular country. Under the influence of religion, culture, history and customs, Japanese landscapes feature delicacy in design and elaboration in materials. An exquisite garden often reflects ideas in literature, calligraphy, paintings, ikebana and teaism, becoming an art work that assembles the essence of Japanese culture. We thus can find the zen implied in the design of Japanese gardens. The concept of Zen could be found throughout their designs. In their works, a narrow space could turn into a deep, richlylayered, savouring and meaningful landscape that was poetic and somewhat zenic. The book consists of three chapters, Japanese gardens, public landscapes and interior landscapes, including the outstanding works of Japanese landscape designers, and giving full expression to the essence of Japanese landscape. May the book be a source of inspiration to all the lovers of landscaping design. SIZE: 225mm x 285mm COVER: Hard Cover PAGE: 256 RELEASE DATE: 2014.10 ISBN: 978-988-12968-0-1

Campus Landscape Planning and Design
Vertical Landscape
With the progress of urbanisation worldwide, the conflict between architecture and green areas in the urban context is becoming increasingly pressing. The concept of integrated landscape arises as an important approach to increase green areas while not occupying valuable inner city lands, and thus finds its way in more and more cities around the world. The book focuses on the theme of integrated landscape, addressing its two main categories respectively: green walls and rooftop gardens. Thirtynine cutting-edge projects are selected to present the latest trends in landscape design. Graham Cleary, executive of Green Roofs Australasia and accredited green roof professional, is invited to be chief editor of the book, in which integrated landscape design is discussed in detail, while technical key issues such as plant selection, irrigation systems and maintenance are involved.
The book takes a look at a subject area of public life which will become more and more important in the future: education. The prospective development of our societies will in future primarily be determined by the quality of culture and education. The following projects mirror a cross-section of all facets of different educational institutions: universities, secondary schools, primary and vocational schools, as well as schools for handicapped people. All sites have one thing in common: these institutions opened up for new ideas and concepts. The times in which structure and learning contents were determined by self-centredness are over. Instead, openness and curiosity for learning determine the self-image of new generations. The new campus landscapes display modern examples of generating architectural and landscape qualities of the site and their interactions. Today, the consequent integration of architectural and landscape concepts to form a coherent whole determines the quality of planning for different needs and in different yardsticks. A Dialogue Between Landscape and Architecture
Commercial Landscape Design
Commercial spaces are important elements in an urban structure. Good landscape designs of commercial spaces create comfortable atmosphere, invigorate commercial activities and thus attract more customers. It thus has gained popularity among landscape professionals over recent years. This volume focuses on the latest commercial landscape projects, unfolding an inspiring vision of international commercial landscapes while telling the stories behind the scene. Landscape architects from different countries such as The Netherlands and Spain contribute their ideas on the characteristics of commercial landscape design under various cultural backgrounds and climate conditions.
The compatibility between buildings and their surrounding landscape in the city has a strong impact on our living environment. Cities will get more human-friendly and inhabitable only if architects and landscape architects worked with each other. The high demand of sustainability in modern society also promotes the integration of buildings and landscape. Landscape and architecture are inseparable, and the boundaries between those two disciplines should be blurred. This issue showcases a series of integrated design works created by firms such as Grant Associates, Karres en Brands landscape architecture + urban planning and Tierra Design (S) Pte Ltd. Talented designers including Michael B. Lehrer, FAIA and B. Cannon Ivers from LDA Design are invited to talk about their professional careers, their mentors, and their ideas on the integration of architecture and landscape.

COMPETITIONS presents some of the most interesting competitions which have taken place in recent years, including a mix of open, anonymous competitions, and restricted, invited competitions. Each issue is sold quarterly with competition videos. 22 illustrated projects displayed in this issue cover a wide scope of cultural building types and concepts, which range from college to library and museum. Drawings and renderings in planning phase and uncompleted projects show architects’ expectation and imagination in cultural architecture. In addition, the interview with OFIS Architects is also included in this issue.

G. Stanley Collyer, PhD, Editor of COMPETITIONS, and Director of The Competition Project, Inc., a nonprofit organisation functioning as a clearing house for design competitions in architecture and urban planning. He notes that many firms in Europe and Australia tell him a majority of their business comes from architecture competitions. He was working as a journalist and tour guide in Berlin during the 1980s when he was introduced to the European system of architectural competitions by some friends. He returned to the United States at a time when the National Endowment for the Arts was investing public dollars in design competitions, so he founded Competition Project, Inc. and started publishing the magazine in 1991 to promote the idea that had fascinated him in Europe. 96
The volume presents most recently completed and awarded competition works of landscape architecture by most highly acclaimed landscape architects, including Lexington Town Branch Competition, Cleveland Design Competition, EDGE/ ucation Pavilion Design Competition, Port of Kinmen Passenger Service Centre International Competition, etc. Each competition work is presented with renderings, plans and diagrams as well as numerous construction details. In addition, you can find other latest international competition information, firstprize designs, and most influential comments written by senior editors, architects or professors. The interview with Silvio d’Ascia also features this issue.
