Story Merchant Books By Dr. Ken Atchity, PhD Story Merchant, my presentation and literary management company, founded the imprint Story Merchant Books in 2012 because selling new authors to traditional publishers was fast becoming a losing business proposition—and we needed books in hand for our sister company Atchity Productions to take to Hollywood (I’ve produced 30+ movies most of them based on books). Since Story Merchant Books began assist-publishing for our authors in 2012, we’ve direct-published nearly 250 titles, including forty or so detective novels by the prolific Michael Avallone. Some of our most successful authors include novels by Larry D. Thompson--whose social issue thrillers were previously published by St. Martin’s Press, but whose subsequent SMB titles, including the e-book versions of So Help Me God and Dead Peasants, and both e-book and print versions of The Insanity Plea and Dark Money; and nonfiction books like James Pierre’s Gambino: The Rise and Jane McCormick and Patti Wicklund’s Rat Pack Party Girl: From Prostitute to Women’s Advocate. Twice a year we’ve been able to cut checks to authors larger than they ever received from their traditional publishers over several years. Jock Miller’s Fossil River is another bestseller for us, a sci-fi thriller about dinosaurs controlling an oil cache in Alaska’s Noatak National Preserve for which the film script has now been completed.

We’re always happy to manage literary estates like Avallone’s,
and proud to be involved with that of New York Times bestseller William Diehl, including Seven Ways to Die, which I finished for him after his demise. The e-books of Primal Fear, Sharky’s Machine, and Hooligans continue to sell every month. The estate of my dear friends Ben and Nancy Freedman profits from their multiple novels, especially the perennial classic Mrs. Mike which often heads our monthly bestseller list. At this point, the imprint is serving our authors’ purposes, especially now that we have distribution through Ingram. I’ve been able to hand over our books to Hollywood financers and have nearly a dozen already in various stages of development. We pride ourselves on publishing good dramatic stories professionally, and select them for the hungriest markets of theater and television. I’m also happy to report that my own Write Time, first published in 1986 and called by The New York Times “the best book on writing,” has found new life as an e-book. Atchity, familiar to attendees of the Dublin Writers Conference, is an author/producer/literary-manager who’s produced more than thirty films and managed nearly twenty New York Times bestsellers.

My Historical Fiction Adventures in the Classroom By Cheryl Carpinello
About Me
I’m a retired high school English teacher. A devourer of books growing up, my profession introduced me to writings and authors from times long past. Through my studies and teaching, I fell in love with the Ancient and Medieval Worlds. Now, I write books set in the Days of King Arthur and stories set in the Ancient Worlds. While my focus is reluctant readers, my books have been used in classrooms from kindergarten to college humanities courses. That’s quite a broad range, and I have to admit that the collegiate use came as a total surprise. Students were preparing for a trip to England and Wales to explore the legend of King Arthur and were reading a wide range of Arthurian literature in order to understand the immense appeal surrounding the legendary king. My intended audiences are primary/elementary, middle, and secondary schools. Typically my Arthurian Legend books are used in grades 4-7th (in the U.S.), and my Egyptian books in grades 8th-12th (again in the U.S.).
Arthurian Legend Several school districts across the U.S. study Medieval Times in the upper elementary classes. My books are used as supplemental reading and help students connect on a more personal level with the time period. I currently have three books set in this time period. Guinevere: On the Eve of Legend, book 1 and Guinevere: At the Dawn of Legend, book 2 introduces readers to King Arthur’s future queen. In On the Eve of Legend, Guinevere, on the eve of her thirteen birthday, finds herself betrothed to King Arthur. In At the Dawn of Legend, she is fifteen years old and still awaiting her marriage to Arthur. My third book is The King’s Ransom, Young Knights of the Round Table, book 1. This story explores growing up in Medieval times and 12
the commitment and courage needed to protect oneself and one’s friends. Not too different from today’s world. Through the adventures of the Princess Guinevere, her friend Cedwyn, and the protagonists from Young Knights, readers see the similarities that exist with kids their ages who lived nearly 1500 years earlier.
Educational Extras For instructors, I offer additional educational materials either in the books and/or as separate downloads. The Guinevere Books have a glossary for definitions and more information about places/people mentioned in the books. Also included are ‘Questions and Enrichment’. These are a combination of comprehension, deeper thinking, and writing activities. The King’s Ransom, Young Knights of the Young Table, book 1, has a comprehensive study guide available as a free download from my Google Docs page. I developed this using a combination of Bloom Taxonomy and Depth of Knowledge (DOK) Levels vocabulary. These are excellent resources for constructing higher level thinking questions. As a high school English teacher, I always created my own study guides for literature that my classes read.
Ancient Egypt My two stories dealing with Ancient Egypt are typically used for World History classes in U.S. high schools. Sons of the Sphinx, while a time-travel adventure, takes readers through the Egyptian society around 1330 BC. To further understand and create an enjoyable reading experience, descriptions of the land and brief explanations of the religion and ruling practices are peppered throughout the story. My short novella, Tutankhamen Speaks, takes my research and fascination with the Boy King to present his story, as told in an ancient scroll found in the basement of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. While fictional, the story is based on what is known about Tut and the time period.
Educational Extras Structured a bit differently from my Arthurian books, these stories have extensive information included inside the book for instructors and students to use.

Sons of the Sphinx has a list of the Pharaohs of the Eighteenth Dynasty (1550-1295 BC), a map of Ancient Egypt, and an extensive Glossary of Egyptian Gods, People, Places, and Terms. When students finish with the book, they know much more about this land and its people. Tutankhamen Speaks, which focuses on King Tut, was developed as a companion to Sons. A much shorter read of about 80 pages, the chapter headings tell the scope of the story supposedly told by the Boy King.
More Free Extras As a bonus for me, educators (private, public, homeschool), and students, all of my books—with the exception of Sons of the Sphinx—also have four-color study guides with a variety of activities made for me by The Wise Owl Factory. Tell us something unexpected about yourself !
I was a teenaged wrangler. I grew up on a horse. Everyone in the family had a at least one horse, most of us participated in horse shows. My, sister and sister-in-law showed in English Pleasure classes, and mother in Hunt class, my dad was often the Ringmaster, and I did a little of everything, including bareback jumping. We boarded our horses at a nearby resort, and one of my favorite weekend activities was leading the trail rides. Many of the guests were overdressed rich ladies from Chicago, and if they started out a little haughty, we’d give them the “white knuckle ride.”
How did you get into writing? When I was in graduate school at Georgetown University, I got my first rejection letter, and it was from True Confessions Magazine, no less. I had assumed the bar was fairly low, and it might have been, but I truly believed that “Raised my Son to be a Criminal and then sentenced him to Prison” was a splendid story. Whatever the reason, the rejection discouraged me from writing fiction for about forty more years. I did have a robust career in advertising, and I started out on the creative side, writing copy. I was lucky and my first job was with a high-profile clothing store chain, and my radio commercials and print ads were everywhere. Everyone listened to the radio back then, and it was fun. It was like writing for a bunch of fans. I’d gotten to be effective at condensing an idea into thirty and sixty second commercial formats, (I had won a number of awards, after all.), and I thought I’d give fiction another try. That’s when I made another bad assumption ––- that going from ninety words to sixty or seventy thousand words would be a snap. Surprise! Thankfully, I’m still writing commercials.
What are your top 3 books of all time? Oddly enough, none is in either of my writing genres. 1. Treasure Island 2. Olive Kitteridge 3. The Princess Bride. Okay, it’s my favorite movie, but I’m sure it’s in a book format somewhere.
Where did you get the inspiration for The Dead of Winter? At the time I wrote the book, we lived on a farm. It was one of those destination farms families visit, with flower picking in the spring and summer, and apple picking in the fall. Our farm was popular; we’d often have a couple thousand visitors each weekend. But late September and October were my favorite months. That’s when we’d open our Corn 17
Maze and Pumpkin Patch. During the last three weekends of October, we held what we called “Haunting Season. On those Friday and Saturdays nights after the daytime festivities were over, the little kids were gone, and it was dark, we reopened for Scary Moonlight Hayrides and our Pitch-Black Corn Maze. I was very proud of what we did with those events. I had been a consultant for a Halloween theme park before, and I knew the secret to a good fright was in well-rehearsed choreography. We’d start everyone off on a Moonlight Hay ride. At the beginning, the rides were meant to feel lame, and I loved hearing the patrons grumble. But when the scary stuff started, it came with a vengeance and escalated quickly. You could hear people screaming for miles. On every hay ride, a deranged clown would jump onto the wagon and grab some unsuspecting person and drag them off the wagon into the corn maze. It wouldn’t be a hay ride without at least one chain saw, and we didn’t disappoint. And we never had trouble finding students from the local college who were more than willing to run around in the dark scaring people. So, on a long flight to Los Angeles one day, I got to thinking. What if the person that supposedly gets whacked in the cornfield, actually does get whacked? What if the owners of the farm are that mad? Family-friendly pillars of the community, yet lunatics who commit unspeakable horrors in plain view. The Dead of Winter begins its storyline with the hay ride and, as one reviewer wrote, it quickly becomes “A twisted maze of fright.”
Do you ever base any of your characters on people you know? Yes, absolutely. There are plenty in The Dead of Winter, but I’ve just started a new book, Murder on the 18th Hole, and much of it is set at a thinly veiled version of the country club where we happened to live. Our house is on the 18th hole, and the pond at the end of our property is a former water hazard. We just moved in to our new house, and I set up my writing desk to face the golf course, and the pond. It’s a spectacular view, but it only took a day before I envisioned a dead body floating in the pond. My victim is the club member everyone hates, so the story quickly began to write itself. I’ll to have to take care my characters don’t resemble actual friends and members too closely. I don’t want to get thrown out of the club just yet.
How long did it take you to write this book? So, The Dead of Winter began as a screenplay for a movie. By the time I landed in Los Angeles on that flight I mentioned, I had the story outline. I couldn’t believe my 18
luck when the next day a good friend offered to finance the movie. We agreed to shoot some of it at our farm in the fall, about eight months later, so now, I had to scramble to write the screenplay. The director who wanted in on the project also said he needed “spruce it up a bit” (read, rewrite), but it still needed to be completed before that could be done. Both domestic and international theatrical distribution agreements were inked, and providing there was definitely a movie opening, a huge publisher wanted to release the paperback. I could see The Dead of Winter lining the airport kiosks. We were going full steam ahead, and I was living the dream. Then my friend mysteriously was unable to come up with the money. (It turned out he never had any, and that’s the subject of another book.) The entire project came screeching to a halt. It took me several months to get over the disappointment, but one day it hit me. Why not go straight to paperback? It was a little unusual, going from screenplay to novel, instead of the other way around, but I’ve not always been a slave to tradition. Again, it wasn’t as easy as taking a screenplay and making it longer, and I floundered around. When I got a publisher, it all began to come together. They said if I wanted my book out for Christmas, they needed to have it in three months. A deadline was all I needed, and I met it. So how long? A year and a half in the making, months in the writing.
Who would you like to see in the lead role, if the book were to be made into a movie? This is a painful question, because we were just about to consider casting, when everything fell apart. The casting company I signed with recommended casting some young unknowns for the twenty and thirty-year olds, and a couple are semi-famous today. I wanted Ryan Kwanten for one of the leads. I had met him at one of the White House Correspondence Dinners. He was just finishing a hugely successful run in the popular cable show, True Blood, and he was interested. But for Ma, the lead, I was thinking Joan Cusack, in a fat suit.
Tell us a bit about your writing process, have you got any writing rituals? Other than working best when I’m under the gun, I can’t say I have developed any rituals yet, but give me time. When I started writing, I was already a busy guy. Then two years ago I co-founded a tech startup. So, almost every time I think I have a several-hour block of writing time, the Universe has no trouble throwing any number of distractions my way. As yogis like to say, (and I am a lapsed yoga instructor), the best time to do yoga is when you do it. I am a very early riser, so that is probably my favorite time to write. Nobody else in the free world is up at that hour either, so if I choose to, I can get a lot done.
Do you read your book reviews? Are you kidding? Of course. Maybe it’s because I’m so new at this, but I love to read what people think. I gave up my writing ego when I submitted my first paper to my Jesuit professors at Georgetown, and they threw it back in my face. I managed to do lot of 19
book signings for The Dead of Winter, and I was very fortunate to get a lot of press, as well. I’m pleased to report that I was chosen to do another Book Signing in January 2018 with Nora Roberts for my new book, Leave No Trace. It’s not out yet, so I have no reviews, but it won’t be long. Very soon I’ll be sending it to my Betas, and as you know, those are like super reviews.
What advice would you have for other writers? Far be it for me to give advice to another writer. But advice to someone who is just beginning? Besides telling them to just start, I’d encourage them to seek out other people who are writing and be part of a community. There are so many resources at our disposals nowadays, it’s not difficult to find writers in every genre. Attend a writer’s conference. You don’t have to be a bigshot writer. Most people who attend represent all levels of success. And there are always plenty of beginners.
Are you reading anything now?
I’m not, although I have a stack that is shouting for my attention. There are several books friends have written that I want to read, and I’ve also promised to write reviews for a couple others. But it’s not like I’m not reading at all. I’m in an active writing group, so I’m always reading each other’s works in progress.
What’s your next step? I’ve just finished Leave No Trace, so I’m just beginning to strategize its rollout, and I’ll need to organize several more book signings and appearances. I’m already scheduled to give a lecture in November, where I’ll discuss that book and tease them with the Murder on the 18th Hole. I believe 2018 could be my breakout year. I hope so.

The reading of the will opens up a right can of worms and the repercussions ripple through the family with some devastating effects. The author reminded me of some of my other favourite authors such as Patricia Scanlan and Cathy Kelly to name just two, only slightly darker.
