BIOGRAPHY Building Art: The Life and Work of Frank Gehry by Paul Goldberger. A penchant for using unconventional materials helped establish Gehry’s reputation with critics and the public alike, but this remarkable biography – the first comprehensive look at the influential architect’s work and life – suggests that the best materials for building a legacy remain paper and ink. $20.00 Fire on the Track: Betty Robinson and the Triumph of the Early Olympic Women by Roseanne Montillo. If you’re like some of us, this will be your first encounter with the name Betty Robinson. That’s a huge disservice to Robinson, whose life and Olympic career are triumphant and inspiring. Montillo’s biography promises to be an illuminating look at both a fascinating lady and the era she inhabited. $27.00

The Vanity Fair Diaries by Tina Brown. Almost nobody remembers this, but the ’83 re-launch of Vanity Fair was widely panned. It took two changes in editorship before Ms. Brown (and, later, Graydon Carter) re-jiggered the magazine into the powerhouse it remains today. Expect lots of delectable spilled tea from her contemporaneous memories of a lively era. $32.00 The Wine Lover’s Daughter by Anne Fadiman. Somehow, we never connected the dots that essayist Anne is the daughter of Clifton Fadiman, who was a kind of all-purpose critic/media commentator in the mode of Bennett Cerf. Anyway, Mr. Fadiman liked wine. A LOT. We find wine connoisseurs and dysfunctional families fascinating, so this hits the right notes, with undertones of oak and citrus. $24.00

Cuz: The Life & Times of Michael A by Danielle Allen. As long as we live in a society that likes to throw young African American men in prison first and ask questions later, untold tragedies will continue to unfold, like this one. Michael Allen had promise and a future as a firefighter, a future that was not to be. Poverty, drugs, gang violence: all of these elements played a role in his untimely death. And still one fundamental question remains, why? $24.95 Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers of World War II by Liza Mundy. The future is female and this brilliant new book shows us that our past was too. If you like stories about women winning world wars (we’re looking at you, Wonder Woman fans), pick this one up. $28.00 Afterglow (a dog memoir) by Eileen Myles. A stunning and moving tribute to the creature Myles devoted her life to. Afterglow breaks your heart and then offers to lick those wounds. This book is a must for anyone who has ever loved – or lost – somebody with four legs. $24.00 Ali: A Life by Jonathan Eig. You can never have enough books about Muhammad Ali. This one is about more than just the boxer, providing a deep and definitive look at the man who famously said, “I am America.” $30.00

Unstoppable: My Life So Far by Maria Sharapova. With a meteoric rise to fame after an astounding win over Serena Williams at Wimbledon in 2004, Maria Sharapova would go on to become the highest-grossing athlete in the world. Her Icarus climb to the top found her testing positive for meldonium, a banned performance-enhancing substance. That’s where her story could have ended, but instead it fueled her determination to prove that she was truly unstoppable. $28.00
