Traditionally cakes were baked as normal circular loaves of bread, they were not decorated as the cakes we see today. A cake was a common food for the English men and was a part of every celebration. They were baked in a regular mud oven, the concept of icing was still unknown. The icing is also known as frosting in many other parts of the world and has become a must these days. The icing spread is prepared using castor sugar mixed with the either with water or milk, beaten with butter. All these ingredients are added one following the other, then forming a dense foam kind of a substance which is then applied over the cake using a pallet knife with a light hand.

When the same icing is made in a little flowing consistency then it is also called as filling. The other type is little thick compared to the one that is coated over a cake, which we usually see on a cake, shaped out as a flower or a leaf and sometimes they are filled in the piping bag and used to write names and messages on the cake. Now, this was all about

how icing was made and its uses. But how do you think icing came into existence? Did they invent this cloudy thing on a purpose or was it an accident? The name icing, originally known as “ice was giving because the sugar granules resembled ice, hence the name icing was given. Back in times, icing or frosting was served separately along with the cake and was made of sugar or honey and almonds. The bread or cake was then dipped in the syrup or just poured on top of it and then served. It was later in the 18th century, that a French chef made an icing, to bake a multi-layered cake and used this mixture to hold the stack of bread on the other. And later icing was used on the outside as well so as to decorate a cake. Thanks to that French chef that he came up with the concept of frosting, otherwise it would take god knows how long to enjoy something like this. Cake icing or frosting are given various flavours and colours, making each cake look different. They are quite popular these days. It took centuries for them to evolve and come to this state, that we finally cherish to eating them the way they are. There are quite a few flavours that are preferred these days like the butter icing, vanilla icing, the mint flavoured icing. It is actually very simple to add these different concepts to the frosting.

Types of icing: Out in the market, you find cakes of different types, each with different colours and tastes. What according to you to makes these cake to different for the other? It the type of icing that makes cakes taste different. The basic idea of all the icing is the same but it the various flavours that we add to them that make them different.

The butter icing: It is basically the basic icing like discussed above but a little more butter added to the regular icing to give it the buttery taste and also a few drops of yellow food colour is added this mixture to give that butter like look. It is a very common kind of icing and is found or made easily. Every cake icing recipe starts with the butter icing and then various flavours are mixed in it to make a new flavour from it. The butter icing is used to ice any regular cake or butter icing cake. Butter icing cakes are simple to make and are a real delight. Vanilla icing: Vanilla icing is also an improvised version of the butter icing. In a mixing bowl, take a small portion of the regular icing and in the last step add few drops of vanilla extract and there you go, you have another kind of the icing made from a regular cake icing recipe. The world famous chocolate ganache: This icing is very quite different from the regular ones. It is very tasty and trust me everyone is just going to love it. The method used is also a little different known as the double boiler method. In a deep vessel, add water to half it up to half the volume, turn on the flame and let the water boil, then place a glass bowl that fits on top of the vessel and add chocolate in the bowl and let the chocolate melt. In a separate pan, start heating fresh cream and get it to a boil, then let the cream cool a little and then add in the melted chocolate and give it a nice mix. And there you go, it is ready. But, I personally think you need not have a cake to enjoy a chocolate ganache. Icing or Frosting, name it whatever you want, it surely is an important part of almost every cake dressing.
