Happy Holidays! I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am for this very first edition of BOOMBALOO OKANAGAN to arrive in your hands and into your homes.
HI! MY NAME IS NATALIE GRANT! I am a wife, mother to two amazing little men (Carden & Dominic), and the founder of a media company for the modern family called BOOMBALOO. While this is our very first BOOMBALOO OKANAGAN issue (which we hope you love by the way), the company itself (BOOMBALOO) - just celebrated its one year anniversary this past November, 2015. BOOMBALOO is a lifestyle brand, focusing on parenting, the latest in decor, fashion trends, and in health, beauty and fitness - and of course finding you the most delicious and realistic recipes. The other part of our compa ny is extremely passionate on promoting and discovering smaller brands. You know, those amazing movers and shakers that have a passion and fire like no other, they are literally doing what they LOVE - and that’s inspirational. Whether they are online or found nestled in the most adorable brick & mortar stores, we are huge fans of “shopping local” and will always encourage you to do so whenever possible. When I started the company back in 2008, I was blown away by all
A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
of the talent out there – and by how much of it was yet to be seen by the world. I designed the company to represent a platform where all those brands and all that talent could come together in one location - Boombaloo.com. With the re-launch of BOOMBALOO last November and the success of our quarterly (digital) global magazines, we are so thrilled to kick off this new launch - our “City” magazines right here in the Okanagan - a place my family and I now call home. This issue is packed with amazing talent based right here in the Okanagan. We hope you take the time to read and support these amazing faces and brands who are truly “killing it” out there! With all the events and “things to do” here in the Okanagan, it’s going to be a great winter! Thank you, Okanagan, for the warm welcome….my family and I are LOVING it here. From my family to yours, "Happy Holidays” and may you continue to find Peace, Love and Joy in 2016! ps- Stay tuned to what Cities we are coming to next!

FA MILY NIGHT AT THE PENTICTON VEES GAME
“We wanted to find a way to make it as easy as possible for families to come to our games.”
Like every successful relationship, there needs to be a little win-win for both parties to be happy. Needless to say the relationship between the Vees and the City of Penticton has provided lots of wins over the years. The Vees are viewed as one of the premier junior hockey franchises in all of hockey, and the people of Penticton have an awful lot to do with that. Annually, the Vees are among the league leaders in overall attendance in the BCHL, a trend that doesn’t seem to be ending during the 2015-2016 season. The love affair with the Vees goes way back, but in recent years the club has worked extra hard to foster their relationship with the community. Vees President, General Manager, and Head Coach Fred Harbinson had a ision of the SOEC filled with children and families. Thankfully, with support from Peter Bros Construction, the Vees entered into an agreement that would change the face of Vees home games. Beginning with the 2013-2014 season, all children 18 years or younger would get a free ticket to Vees games when accompanied by an adult. This partner

ship has allowed the Vees to become the best option in town for affordable family entertainment. “We wanted to find a way to make it as easy as possible for families to come to our games” said Harbinson. “We are very fortunate that Peter Bros Construction shared our vision, and we were able to make it a reality.” If you take a family of four to Vees game on a “Wicked” Wednesday night, it will cost them a grand total of $10.00, and that includes a beverage for mom and dad. There is very little that can compare to that from a value standpoint. The Vees spend a fair amount of their time in the community at various events when they aren’t on the ice. Kevan Scott is the Vees Community Events Co-ordinator, and her role is to make sure the Vees are busy around town in an effort to help local businesses with their fundraising initiatives, as well as putting smiles on the aces of kids at area schools.
“It’s so important for our guy’s to be involved in the community and give back” said Harbinson. “If we expect the communi ty to support us, the least we can do is have our players be involved and show that this is a two-way street. It’s been a great partnership between the Vees and the community, and we want to keep it that way.” Gateway Casinos, owners of Lake City Casinos locally, entered into a partnership with the Vees for the 2014-2015 season where they created the Gateway Casinos Community Zone. Each game, members of local schools and non-profit groups and organizations get the opportunity to watch Vees hockey from the comfort of leather sofas and chairs directly behind the glass. These are literally the best seats in the house and the fact that community groups can access them at no-charge speaks volumes. “There is no question we could charge a pretty penny for those seats” said Vees Director of Player Development and Corporate Sales David Michaud. “We wanted community groups and organizations the chance to watch our games in a way that not many people get the chance to, Gateway Casinos has been a fantastic partner for us, and we hope it’s a program that will last for many years because the feedback I’ve received from the groups who have used the Community Zone has been amazing.” The Vees are once again off to a flying start for the 2015-2016 season, and while championships are never promised, this season’s club has established itself as a contender. One thing that is for certain, when the chips are down and the season is on the line, the SOEC will be packed and the cow bells will be ringing, pushing the Vees onto greatness.

I booked with the spa for my bachelorette party and upon arrival had a pleasant experience! Even my 83 year old grandmother had nothing but praise for the service and care provided. They took wonderful care of my whole group, all 6 of us for mani's and pedi's, and had a beautiful food arrangement that fit my tea party theme perfectly! From the first moment I booked to the moment we left, everything was wonderfully taken care of ! -Amber A.
Very calming environment and staff.
We were there at the end of the day but did not feel rushed to leave so they could close. Treatment were professional and pampering. Allergies were considered in recommendations for both services and products used. A definite "must" after a long day of wine tasting! -Alice L.

Coming back to the world of health and fitness can be an overwhelming task for any mom. We have a never-ending to-do list, a new baby to cuddle, your other children demanding your attention, and a world driven by social media that expects you to have it all together the moment you bring that new babe into the world! First of all, take a deep breath and let go of whatever massive expectations you had for yourself post-baby. Putting together obtainable and realistic goals is one of the most important things you can do for yourself as a new mom. I think I finally started to really believe this and practice it with baby #3. Yes, it took me two pregnancies and post-partum recoveries to realize that maybe jumping back into life, fitness, and a full social life was not the best thing for me or my family immediately after bringing a new little one into this world. So how do you find balance as your family grows? E M O T I ON A L B E F O R E P H Y S I C A L One of the most important parts of recovery for a new mom is being sensitive to the fact that your body is going through something very emotional on many levels and that your hormones are on overdrive. Thinking that you need to get out of bed and jump back into those skinny jeans is an unrealistic expectation. Take the first couple weeks post-baby to stay in your pajamas, lie around the house, and cuddle that baby. When we push our bodies physically post-baby, we risk setting ourselves up for sickness, injury, or an emotional breakdown. Slow and steady will always win when it comes to post-baby recovery. Things like taking little walks or choosing healthy food options for your healing process are the perfect beginning to that post-baby recovery. DO IT TOGETHER One of the hardest things when starting a fitness journey is feeling alone or overwhelmed. I highly recommend sitting down as a family and chatting with your partner/children and setting your goals together. Explain why it is important to you that you eat a healthy balanced diet as a family, and have them get involved with your fitness plan. Having your kids help with activities like making snacks or meals will keep things fun and interesting as you meal plan for the week. Make a calendar with your partner, and set aside personal time for each one of you. This will help both parties feel like their goals and their personal health are important. Having a new baby is amazing, but it also can be overwhelming. Create opportunities for each of you to have alone time for a sweat session or just to regroup or clear your head. WHEREVER/WHENEVER/HOWEVER Working out and having babies or children to take care of can be complicated. Hitting up those boot camp classes in your perfect Lululemon outfit may not be a option for you, so coming up with a realistic plan is very important. When it comes to fitness, I exercise wherever, whenever, or however I can. Most of the time my workouts are in our backyard while my kids play and the baby naps on a mat nearby. After having my boys, I was constantly trying to fit gym time or drop-ins at studios in between breastfeeding, naps or playdates. It got so overwhelming on some days that I stopped enjoying fitness and would feel anxiety every morning as I tried to rush us out the door for my workouts. I’m not saying you should write off the gym or your studio workouts! But I am saying to create healthy expectations. Maybe your week is filled with backyard workouts or taking the kids to the track and having them play while you sweat, but then you set aside some nights or weekend time to get away and hit up classes. This comes back to the calendar system. Set aside time for yourself, and know that those short, powerful workouts in the backyard are just as valuable as insane Jane’s boot camp at your local studio. FIND A SUPPORT SYSTEM Whether it’s your partner, a group of friends, or an online fitness site, find a support system that works for your life and keeps your accountable/motivated in your goals. Health and fitness are definitely possible post-baby, but setting realistic expectations is key to finding success in your journey. REBECCA SIEWERT PHOTOGRAPHY

CREATE . PLAY . EXPLORE. AT BUGABOO UNIVERSITY WE AIM TO FURTHER DEVELOP YOUR CHILD‘S SENSE OF SELF, STIMULATE THEIR IMAGINATION AND FOSTER A LOV E FOR LIFE-LONG LEARNING.
WE ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO EXPLORE THEIR OWN UNIQUE AND INDIVIDUAL INTERESTS BY INVESTIGATING SUBJECTS THAT ARE MEANINGFUL TO THEM. THIS PROMOTES A POSITIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS LIFELONG LEARNING.
I B E L I E V E that the classroom is the third teacher to a child. It should be an environment that provides inviting play opportunities that are flexible, constantly emerging and created from a child’s own ideas, imagination and observations. A child’s work is their play and by providing different materials and mediums throughout the classroom a child will be inspired to use all 5 of their senses to discover explore and create. Learning through their process of play, not through a predetermined end product. -Teacher Angela CHILDREN PROVIDE ENDLESS POTENTIAL to learn and to teach. Preschool is not for worksheets, or ABC's, or even how to count to 20 (they will learn this regardless). Children need teachers to encourage their natural inquisitiveness. A teacher to answer their 100th question with the same patience that they answered the first. A teacher to listen to their 100 languages. A teacher that can do this; that can support their intrinsic desire to learn is a teacher that instills a life long love of learning. That's what preschool is for. -Teacher Vanessa

TESTIMONIALS My 3 1/2 year old started at Bugaboo University this fall. She hasn't been in daycare, so this was her first time being left with people who weren't family. The first two weeks were wonderful, she was excited to go, no tears, see you later, mom! Then she realized I don't just sit in the car to wait for her...crying and screaming ensued. The honeymoon had ended! Angela and Vanessa were wonderful, with both of us! They helped me figure out strategies to make drop off easier (dear daughter was smiling and happy at pick up!) and after a few weeks, she was settled into a routine. She has also shown lots of growth with letter and number recognition, and creativity has skyrocketed! I cannot say enough about this program and the two caring individuals who run it! Just B.U.! Caithy Boyle Our family is incredibly happy with the Bugaboo pre-school classes. Our daughter Mckenna LOVES going to school! She says her favorite part is playing with, and making new friends. She wakes up everyday and asks 'do I get to go to school today?' It been a wonderful transition to school with the kind help of Ms. Angela & Ms. Vanessa. The program has lots of focus on outdoors and the seasons around us, helping our little ones comprehend more about our world around them. Thanks for everything! Jade Dorrell-Mullin My 4 year old loves Bugaboo University and wishes he could go every day. The freedom to learn and explore ideas rather then follow a formal lesson plan allows young minds to use their imagination and develop their ideas in the direction that they want to see them go. We love Bugaboo University... Kate Swanson

THE ULTIMATE POWER SALAD INGREDIENTS
2 c. spinach 2 c. kale, torn into bite sized pieces 3/4 c. chickpeas (drained) 3/4 c. cooked and cooled quinoa 1 ripe avocado, diced 1 red pepper, diced 1 yellow pepper, diced 1/3 c. pumpkin seeds 1/3 c. chopped roasted almonds 1/2 c. crumbled feta cheese (optional)
Recipes from the kitchen of Tori Wesszer, of Fraiche
DRESSING
2 garlic cloves, crushed Juice of 1 lemon (fresh only) 2 tsp. Dijon mustard 1 tbsp. sugar or honey 3 tbsp. red wine vinegar 2/3 c. canola oil Salt & pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS
1) In a shallow large serving bowl, place the salad ingredients in sections (however you wish!). 2) In a mason jar or tall cup, stir together the garlic cloves, lemon juice, dijon mustard, sugar or honey and vinegar. Stir together. 3) Add the canola oil in a stream while whisking (or use an Aerolatte, this is ALL I use for making salad dressing, it perfectly emulsifies the dressing). Taste and add salt and pepper if you wish. 4) Pour the salad dressing over the salad and serve! FRAICHENUTRITION.COM
COCONUT PANCAKES INGREDIENTS
3 tbsp. melted butter 2 c. flour (can substitute gluten-free flour) 1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut ¼ c. sugar 2 ½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt 1 can (398mL) coconut milk 2 large eggs 1 tsp. vanilla 1/2 tsp coconut extract
DIRECTIONS
1) Melt the butter in a saucepan or microwave and cool. 2) In a large bowl, mix together all of the dry ingredients. 3) In a separate bowl, beat the eggs with a fork and add the coconut milk, vanilla, coconut extract and cooled melted butter. 4) Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir just until mixed: do not over mix! It will still look lumpy. 5) Heat a griddle or pan with a small amount of vegetable oil on medium heat, pour into pancake shapes of your choice, and flip when the bottom is golden brown.
CORN CHOWDER (IN 10 MINUTES) INGREDIENTS
3 slices of bacon, diced 1/2 small onion, finely diced 2 stalks celery, finely diced 1 can creamed corn 1 cup 2% milk 1/2 cup frozen corn Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS
1) In a heavy saucepan over medium heat, cook the bacon until the fat is mostly rendered and the bacon is fully cooked. Remove from heat and pour the bacon and any grease onto a plate lined with paper towel (to absorb as much fat as possible). 2) Place the saucepan back over the heat and cook the onion and celery until fragrant and transparent, about 5 minutes. Add the bacon, creamed corn, milk and frozen corn and bring to a simmer. 3) Season with salt and pepper and serve.
