BOOMER MAGAZINE | IDENTITY | FRIDA KAHLO Editor’s Note. How do we build identity in art and most importantly how do we make ourselves accepted? Being an artist was never easy and most of the times especially in the emerging period things are really hard and complicated. One of the most complicated aspects is being accepted exactly as we are and for the things we stand for, for example our Art and our true self. The whole idea of identity and acceptance might not sound like a big deal but is the fundamental base for everything that humankind stands for, especially in art. The theme for the third edition of our magazine is “IDENTITY” and leading on the cover is a true icon, someone that has inspired millions around the world not just in art but on all social levels, Frida Kahlo. More than sixty seven years have passed since her death but Frida still continues to empower generations of artists to accept themselves and share their identities and their art with the world. The purpose of this publication is to inspire artists to accept themselves and their art without being forced into the stereotypical theatre that our society plays with. “I don’t paint dreams or nightmares, I paint my own reality” - Frida Kahlo Kindly note that most of the works are for sale. For any enquires regarding artists, prices, purchase, shipments- you can kindly contact us at email@boomergallery.net or contact the artists directly via Instagram (Instagram user name in the bio). Thank you for your attention, and we hope you will enjoy reading about the selected artists and their works.

Jemima Murphy

jemimamurphy_art

Jemima is a painter from the New Forest. She studied Russian at the University of Bristol and spent a year in St Petersburg where she took a term at Repin Institute of Arts. Her 2021 solo show ‘Wild Things’ was a huge success and her work has since been in mnay private collections. She addresses strength, positivity and happiness in the unknown; her paintings tell a romantic mystery in an uncertain world. Jemima captures excitement and dream-like views, shifting the focus from the natural to the personal. The activity within her work expresses stories with clarity belonging only to Jemima’s mind; it provides a host of clues for understanding her personal circumstance and mood, the turn of events that may have preceded it, alongside any future events that are unknown. Inspired by Fauvism, she creates and reimagines nature in vivid scenes with bright colours and dynamic compositions.

Meri Aisala I was born in 1992 in the heart of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Finland. I was an art line student in upper secondary school and continued on to study graphic design in University of Lapland, where I got my bachelor’s and master’s degrees with a major in graphic design and minoring in art history. I am now trying out a new path, studying education psychology and gender studies.

spiralartstuff

My art tends to skew towards dark surrealism, but sometimes I also find myself lost in some bright and colorful, happier self expression. I like to put my difficult and strong emotions into my art and use it to deal with difficult questions I’m grappling with. I also like to use art as another vessel for my interests in alternative fashion and whatever else I may find myself obsessed with. My favorite mediums to work with are colored pencils and acrylic paints.

Miyuki Hiraoka “The best way to predict the future is to create it,“ - Abraham Lincoln.

artonger

I was born in Japan and am learning design and science at the same time at two universities. My ambition is to create the future through design and science. Tech- nology is advancing every day, and what was once science fiction is no longer science fiction. In this day and age, people are sometimes afraid of big changes or expect benefits too much. However, if we discuss all the possibilities for the new era positively, it could also be a chance to rethink stereotypes of the present and move society forward. Here, I am a future artist who does not just predict, but also creates.

Ai Nakada The IDENTITY is liberation. I seek to understand the identity from the point of view of cognitive psychology. In order to know about the self, we need to know about human beings. I’m Cognitive psychologist based in London, Royal College of Art. My work is based on samples of real human eyes modelled by AI. On the other hand, it is based on the visual illusion of being able to recognise your own face even when it is upside down.

ainakada

And the model for knowing about human beings is AI (imitation). Because in order to find a boundary about the self, we need an object of comparison. In particular, it will be the unconscious that reflects the self. The unconscious is greatly reflected in the eyes, as it is said that “the eyes speak louder than the mouth”.

Tetiana Mokrik Tetiana Mokrik was born and work in Ukraine. I am specialized in expressive contemporary art, exactly in abstract painting. Abstract art is a special emotional language for me that helps me to share my feelings with people of any nationality without words. It deletes the boundaries and gives me a freedom of creativity. I am full-time artist because I cannot imagine my day without painting. It makes me happy, while painting the world seems to be stopped for me to feel the moment. My favorite quote that gives my guidance: “If you could say it in words there would be no reason to paint”- Edward Hopper.

I have always been surrounded by Art. I just didn’t realisehow much it served as food for my well-being. I stopped painting for about 10 years, which unknowingly caused an increasing profound instability out of which a personal crisis came knocking. I found the answer to be the simplest of all, I needed to paint. I didn’t remember anymore the liberating storm that comes upon me once I start painting and start to give shape to my internal content. Painting is liberating and healing, instead of using words you use strokes to write your diary. A painting is always the artist very personal perception of something. In my case, I let the brush flow according to feelings, memories, and imagination all together. I always had quite a vivid imagination and sensitive inspiration inspecific topics I grew up with, specifically the “real maravilloso” and “realismo magico” of the Latin-American literature which results in a very organic, flora and fauna shapes.

She began abstract painting in 2021. Painting is the realization of her authentic self; it allows her to tap into a universal omnipresence beyond the transient physical forms. Albeit a physical act, it quiets conscious thoughts and takes her into the vast radiance of her true nature, allowing the reality of awareness to manifest onto the canvases.

As a young girl that grew up in a predominantly Jewish and traditional town in New Jersey, my art talents were looked down upon and seen as a hobby or a last resort. I was constantly told I would never make money as an artist, and with that I suppressed that side of myself. I felt a large gap in the way I was able to express myself and cope with various things. I lost myself by trying to blend in with the crowd. I didn’t come out of hiding until I read a book about Frida Kahlo titled “What Would Frida Do?”, a book that empowers you to proudly and boldly be yourself. And with that motivation, I started my journey to find myself as a feminist, mixed media artist.

My name is Regina Potapova and I’m a watercolor artist from Moscow, Russia. Participant of numerous exhibitions all around the globe and a member of the International Watercolor Society, Eurasian Art Union and International Arts Foundation. I started painting pretty much since I was able to hold a pencil in my hand. It was almost like an obsession I was born with. I’ve been painting ever since and it was through my exploration with different styles and kinds of paint that I found watercolor to be the one for me. Of all the different kinds of paint, watercolor is the only one capable of projecting the light and transparency the way the should be. Its diversity and uniqueness have almost a hypnotic effect on people admiring it. Nothing else can use a plain white color of paper with such finesse and elegance. It’s almost like a fine-tuned musical instrument that can deliver both harmony and contrast in the same efficient way. What am I ?

Mona Henao Easy to say what I was. A well educated woman, a copywriter, and an independent, powerful female. What will I be tomorrow? Time will tell. Yesterday’s tomorrow made me a janitor. A janitor who found in art an open door to rebuild agonizing dreams. As for who I am, I’ve always been a creative, intelligent woman, a very strong one, and as cliche as it may sound, a fighter. That’s who I am, and that’s what my art is about: it doesn’t really matter what you are, but who you are. It is who you are that makes your legacy, because what you are does not define your soul.

Kirill Gera Arkadyev First of all, in my art, I explore human nature. Thoughts, feelings, and reactions of a person to the issue I have chosen. Sometimes, this statement can be about a particular feeling or a set of feelings. I independently studied psychology (based on the works of L. S. Vygotsky) and was particularly interested in nonverbal psychology. This is how I started my career as an artist-by trying to portray reactions artistically.

I chose symbolism, surrealism and avant-garde as the main tools, a kind of foundation on which I tried to create my own, unique style. And mostly graphics, because I like its accuracy. Also, I am somewhat excited about the irremediability in the graphics. In contrast to painting, in graphic work (thought out storyline and figuratively) there are moments where I can make an irreparable mistake. So every work, for me, is to some extent a risk, a game of fragility.

As an artist and certified perfumer, Novakov is able to unpack events through a multisensory artistic lens by examining seemingly inconsequential things, such as the smells of outdoor markets and historic recipes. While her creative practice focuses on conceptual perfumery and textile design she is also invested in the role of scent and touch in the construction of personal and collective memories, fragrance as an aspect of Utopian societies and cooking as a sociopolitical act. The author of dozens of books, articles and exhibition catalogues, Novakov is currently the Art and Technology contributor to Art Press (Paris) and Vice President (USA) of the AICA - International Association of Art Critics (Paris).

Born in Madrid in 1974, within an artistic family. Learn to draw and paint at a young self-taught, surrounded by an atmosphere of painters and sculptors who come frequently to the study of his father, a doctor-painter, in Palma de Mallorca. He studied architecture at La Coruna, abandoning the first year, avoiding stereotypes set by the University. This race takes experience and perspective on notions of construction and afternoons and evenings at street drawing, of which there is a whole block of sea port, his favorite corner of this city. Back to Madrid, his hometown, where just studying engineering, without abandoning the idea of one day devoted entirely to painting. These studies define end of linear and geometric style of painting. Olga Stupina My name is Olga Stupina. I was born and live in the Moscow region. Since childhood, she studied at an art school. But after school she became an entrepreneur. Years later, I returned to drawing. At first it was just a hobby, drawing for the soul. I like nature, how it changes with the seasons. Another passion of mine is Picasso’s work, I see his responses in urban architecture. I have been drawing professionally for the last year, participated in various exhibitions. I have two directions in creativity: 1) urban landscapes with elements of abstraction and cubism, made with acrylic 2) collages with the theme of abstraction, cubism and modern urban life.

Through my paintings, I’m fascinated by exploring the transformative power of meditation in front of a work of art, and the powerful uplifting effect it can have. When I lived in London for my second degree in Fashion in 2004, it was a particularly lonely time for me, and I used to make regular pilgrimages to the Rothko room at the Tate Modern just before closing. The rich depth in the seemingly simple layers of colour filled my peripheral vision, it was like being comforted by a large shroud. It had the power to strip my loneliness away leaving me in a new state, comforted, numbing transient anxieties. They held my hand and drew me in. 3 years ago I was referred for ADHD, and the more I learn about it, I’ve become increasingly interested in exploring that crossover with my creative brain, as I rediscover my new identity as a woman, nearly 40 with neurodiversity, I create my work to serve the viewer, with the hope of soothing their anxieties.

My journey of discovering my identity started with the series of paintings called Big Heads when I got diagnosed with Arteriovenerous Malformation in my head and I went through 40 surgeries on my head. My face was constantly changing over the last 22 years to the extent that I completely lost who I was. The Big Heads series became my diary analysing changes of the face. The series transitioned into the Out of the Body Experience series when I experienced leaving my body and exploring the other realm. That impacted my perspective on things, on the self and my surroundings.

Musicians are Icons. On concerts, they captivate thousands of peoples with their personality and share their message with the world. The fans identify with the music and the artist itself. It becomes part of who they are and how they want to be. I capture those precious moments of live music in the most authentic way. With textures, colours, effects and dimensions, I want to breathe the magic of live music back into my paintings and create vivid images that are just as captivating as the live show once was. I define myself neither as a painter nor as a photographer. For me, the work starts when I pick up the camera and the lights go out in the concert hall and ends when I have made the last brush stroke. What lies in between is a mix of magic, music, inspiration and capturing that one moment.

Cheng Wai Ho (Alfred Cheng) B. Hong Kong. 1988 “Everything in the world is interconnected to each other”

alfredcheng_art

Alfred Cheng is a thread artist based in Hong Kong. A self-taught artist demonstrated his thought by weaving a single thread on canvas. He believes every independent object in the world is not perfect. Only by interconnected to each other, then the ultimate well-balance phenomenon can be generated. Therefore perfection simply doesn’t exist to him, but only the ultimate wellbalance. There will be no boundary in Alfred’s mind by denying the absolute answer. So it allows Alfred to explore the subtle parts in different areas and connect them together by a single thread to create his own world. There is always a sense of purity in Alfred’s works.

42

Artist Katsiaryna Parukava was born in 1992, in the city of Vitebsk, Republic of Belarus. In 2009 she graduated from the School of Arts No. 3 in Vitebsk with a degree in Fine Arts. The passion for the entire animal world and the craving for drawing are intertwined into one whole, forming the main vector on the creative path of development. The artist is admired and inspired by the centuriesold wisdom in defining nature and wildlife. Since ancient times, people have endowed animals with human and mystical qualities. They were deified and elevated to the rank of sacred beings. The fundamental point in the works is the transfer in a hyperrealistic manner of the image of rare animals, by superimposing many thin lines with a sword brush on the canvas, which, through a variety of shades and layers, convey all the splendor of the animals that inhabit our planet.

I would describe my art as my visual diary, scrolling through each piece will give you an insight into how I identify myself and my feelings. Natalja Heybroek

nataljaheybroek

The fluid nature of life is the focus of Natalja Heybroek’s artwork, as it explores the movement of one subjective experience into the next. It embodies a strong relationship with the natural world while revealing the unusual capabilities of materials. The organic forms have a tendency to lead the mind towards a more immediate connection with the senses. To deepen the experience, each piece is based on elemental concepts that revolve around philosophy, emotion and knowledge. The human unending pursuit of truth is the topic of these floating paintings that are fossilised in epoxy. Veritas Lux Mea means ‘the truth is my light’ in Latin, which is the name of the sevenpart series that these works are part of. The essence of the word ‘truth’ implies a universality, yet upon reflection what comes to light is that each person’s truth is deeply personal. (Photo credit Sven Jacobs)

Olivia Seger At this point, a description of one’s own person usually follows. So I could write that I was born on 06.10.1978 in Switzerland and add a list of my career. But this doesn’t really say anything about my art. That’s why I prefer to keep it with my art, which is minimalist and therefore leaves the viewer a lot of room for his own imagination. I am a self-taught artist and my Art is selfexplanatory! I’m only the lucky one, who is allowed to express it.

Saint Petersburg, Russia. The drawing is my story, the chapter of the book. It can consist of one line - one word, movement. That fleeting thing that we all see and try to keep in our memories. Everyone has their own world, I invite you to visit me, through drawings and paintings. People and cats are the main mysteries for me. Characters, emotions, uniqueness and beauty are what attracts me. I try to solve them, read them, show them and tell others. I have a series of sketches, illustrations and paintings of cats. There is a separate series of sketches - sketches of people in a simple life. I draw with different materials. In painting, I like to compose complex colors myself by mixing colors and using many subtle glazes to saturate the color. I love the incompleteness in drawing, giving the viewer the opportunity to come up with it himself.

Belinha’s innate insatiable passion is magical, because it allows her to achieve creations which are the fruit of her own designs and processes. For Belinha, the principal goal of Art is to touch the sensitivity of the public. Denisa’s artwork is known for her exploration of identity, nature and design using impasto techniques with oil paints. Taking an approach to challenge the frame of thought and emotions we feel, inviting the viewer to narrate their own observations. Her meaningful work delves into her own interpretation of forms and characteristics of the world of vintage and antique influences. Reproducing familiar visual signs of vibrant and dark colours, passionate and elegant brush strokes, showing a freely varied approach in each piece. She has found the subtle use of surrealism and minimalism to be valuable in arranging her visual ideas, subliminally present in every one of her paintings. A fascination with the ancient world of mythology, symbolism and mystery is evident in Mansfields’ paintings. Whilst her work is grounded in the values of remembering the past, it welcomes a fresh outlook on reinventing traditional fine art.

Inspired by the people he’s met on his social ascent from a humble background to scaling heights, Umapathy brings out the profound essence of their emotions – through strokes of paint. Having honed his innate artistic skills at the College of Fine Arts, he works with acrylics to express intangible relationships, where the figures invoke a strong sense of conviction. The result is his signature style – a mesh of black & white elements, overlaying a colourful diaspora. He captures people’s internal emotions and external responses in a way that’s intimate and universal at the same time. Abstract ideas are translated into reality amongst an array of elements that leaves one with a certain connection, if not longing for more. He began his career in advertising and interiors while working as a director for commercial shoots and corporate films. Through his art, Umapathy has raised funds for several non-profit organisations.

The way is the goal. In this sense, my paintings are created full of passion. The need to express myself artistically gives me the opportunity to let go and let my feelings run free. My artwork emerges from many different ways of expression. My abstract paintings are reflections of my emotional experiences and my mood in the very moment of artistic creation. When I practice such intuitive art of painting I experience a kind of encounter with myself and many paintings are created out of this emotion. Characteristic of my art style are the faces that emerge during the painting process and sometimes merge into each other.

Maria discovered her love for art in her early childhood. She was fascinated by the illustrations in her children’s books and cartoons, especially the detailed garments and splendidly adorned robes caught her attention. Later, she started to draw her own designs and sold her first artworks at an age of 6 in first grade to her fellow classmates. To this day, she draws her inspiration from fashion and craftsmanship, as she believes that garments and accessories are a possibility to create and emphasize an identity. Maria is of Russian origin and lives and works in the south of Germany. Her multidisciplinary artistic work is driven by the quest for identity and home. Given her own biography, her artworks explore female identity in a dichotomy between social expectations and self-perception with a melancholic aesthetic. Her works are held in private collections in Germany, Switzerland, Kazakhstan and Russia.

As an artist and a consultant, I often feel like I am balancing between two realities in life and am constantly exposed to the feeling of having to make a final decision for one of my two professions. At some point, I actively chose not to decide - and I find it wonderful that I get to devote myself to both my passions. Art is a complement to my consulting and student life, which allows both motifs and materials to vary in texture. Reconciling the heterogeneity of textures is a challenge I face - with two conflicting egos also on a personal level. The development of my paintings is impulsive and finds its own logic in the process. I often work with impasto techniques, so many of the paintings have multiple textures of spray paint, glossy media and chalk elements. The ‘Ciary’ (Corona diary) series consists of four snapshots highlighted in times of self-isolation. Born as a daily art challenge to overcome the routine of the home office.

I am a media artist and designer, using speculative and critical design to imagine alternative post-digital futures and realities, especially those to do with cornerstone human experiences. I have recently graduated with an MA/MSc in Innovation Design Engineering from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London. Interested in the implications of technology on human evolution, I work in the intersection of technology, culture, and anatomy. Through my research-based practice on emerging digital cultures, I ask: as digital media and handheld hardware become proxies for our natural selves, have we fundamentally begun to change? To answer this question, I create works of ‘computational sculpturing’ in which human interaction, digital technologies, additive manufacturing, and robotics create artifacts and monuments that preserve and archive humanity’s post-digital future.

Dyana Zada I’m an enthusiast Syrian-British artist based in London, Acrylic on canvas is my medium, I took up painting in 2014 and ever since then it’s been my passion and outlet. “Moments in Therapy” is my current work in progress depicting different emotional experiences during therapy and the thoughts and feelings it provokes in me. There is a stigma attached to therapy preventing people from knowing themselves in the first place before stepping into accepting who they are. There is a fear (sometimes unconscious) of uncovering our past and knowing how we’ve come to be who we are.

dyana.za

For me, I struggle to put my emotions into words, so I found that the impressions I paint on my canvas are relieving and speak a zillion words, through them I overcome my throttled states of mind when it comes to expressing desires, daydreams, and painful longings.

Car Act Air

89

CAR ACT AIR is the meeting of young, passionate artists who wish to suggest a raw, authentic art, far from the classic codes and shackles of the sometimes already too furrowed paths of modern art. What brought them together is a commitment, around anti-superficial values, in a world where a predictable aesthetic has taken precedence over pure creation, and where the individual is too often valued, to the detriment of the community. To give meaning to an art condemned to be nothing but a foil, it must be loaded with universal values, ensuring that any artistic production is the fruit of the pooling of various skills, painting , photography, design, graffiti and leather goods. CAR ACT AIR is therefore an artistic collective that transmits messages, in a freed manner, using all the mediums available to it, breaking the superficial through anonymity, focusing its commitment on values of mutual aid, authenticity, and creative freedom.

Since being diagnosed with CLL Leukemia Blood Cancer a few years ago Claire Morton has been studying the health benefits of knitting and felting and uses them as art therapy and a way to express herself. The process of felting requires focus and concentration, so it has an inbuilt meditative quality. It can be a peaceful, calming activity. The quality of wool is tactile and soft, whilst the colours of the wool are vibrant and uplifting. It helps Claire get into a state where she is fully absorbed in what she is doing (often called “flow”) which has similar benefits to meditation. During a creative endeavor like needle felting, not only is the mind focused on the project, but the motion of the hands work to settle the nervous system. Which actively sooths emotions and let’s the rest of the world fade to the background. The Colourful Characters are made from the imagination.

My work explores the abstract human form and the relationship between individual representation and our environment. Now more than ever, we can become trapped in an echo chamber creating an environment of confirmation bias that re-enforces what we present as ‘self’. Through Virtual Reality, video and sculpture I hope to create a physical intervention, an isolated experience between the viewer and the artwork that is thought provoking. I want the viewer to reflect on how we all perceive ourselves in digital and physical space.

In my oil paintings, I use real life experiences, live models, music, and personal interests to reflect spiritual and environmental energies that surround us all; i feel that portrait could be a reflection of the soul. My favorite artists are Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Vermeer and Bouguereau , Each of my creations start with real life sketches, but finish with the usage of a full spectrum of pastel, neon and bold colors in oils . Sometimes I think that the paintings have a life of their own . Art feels like an infinite field of possibilities, in which I would like to project for others.

Accomplished a BSc In Adults Health and Sciences, the beautiful study of bodies anatomy and physiology. My work I believe, often allures, veiling elements of one’s soul, conveying messages so that the observer might or might not connect. Each piece to its right, is extremely real yet as much insincere. Each of my pieces is perhaps a reflection of my person and hypostasis. Furthermore, through my art and its freedom of expression I am often reminded of my self-value, of who I am, and I became through life experiences.
