BOOMER MAGAZINE | IDENTITY | FRIDA KAHLO Editor’s Note. How do we build identity in art and most importantly how do we make ourselves accepted? Being an artist was never easy and most of the times especially in the emerging period things are really hard and complicated. One of the most complicated aspects is being accepted exactly as we are and for the things we stand for, for example our Art and our true self. The whole idea of identity and acceptance might not sound like a big deal but is the fundamental base for everything that humankind stands for, especially in art. The theme for the third edition of our magazine is “IDENTITY” and leading on the cover is a true icon, someone that has inspired millions around the world not just in art but on all social levels, Frida Kahlo. More than sixty seven years have passed since her death but Frida still continues to empower generations of artists to accept themselves and share their identities and their art with the world. The purpose of this publication is to inspire artists to accept themselves and their art without being forced into the stereotypical theatre that our society plays with. “I don’t paint dreams or nightmares, I paint my own reality” - Frida Kahlo Kindly note that most of the works are for sale. Rosemary Meza-DesPlas is a multidisciplinary artist whose studio practice includes fiber arts, drawing, painting, installation, video, and spoken word performance. She received her BFA from the University of North Texas and her MFA from Maryland Institute, College of Art (Hoffberger School of Painting). The foundation for her art practice is research and writing about the intersection of social issues and gender inequalities. She utilizes the figure as a vehicle to discuss sociocultural topics through a feminist lens. Fiber works are created by hand-stitching her hair into various surfaces; she hasbeen sewing with hair since 2000. As a Latina with pelo malo, the material culture of hair speaks to her identity: ethnicity and gender. Meza-DesPlas exhibits with Amos Eno Gallery in Brooklyn, NY and form & concept gallery in Santa Fe, NM. She currently resides in Farmington, New Mexico.

Jemima Murphy

Jemima is a painter from the New Forest. She studied Russian at the University of Bristol and spent a year in St Petersburg where she took a term at Repin Institute of Arts. Her 2021 solo show ‘Wild Things’ was a huge success and her work has since been in mnay private collections. She addresses strength, positivity and happiness in the unknown; her paintings tell a romantic mystery in an uncertain world. Jemima captures excitement and dream-like views, shifting the focus from the natural to the personal. The activity within her work expresses stories with clarity belonging only to Jemima’s mind; it provides a host of clues for understanding her personal circumstance and mood, the turn of events that may have preceded it, alongside any future events that are unknown. Inspired by Fauvism, she creates and reimagines nature in vivid scenes with bright colours and dynamic compositions.

Vera Hoi is a professional Artist from Austria. She was born 1981 in Minsk, Belarus. After graduating from the University and having professional experience in business, Vera moves to Austria. There she learned academic methods of oil painting and also has attended abstract art school. Vera is a nature-inspired artist. Her paintings are an expression of emotions, experiences, thoughts, and dreams. Her purpose as an artist is to create paintings with depth and harmonic vibration that open the Heart to harmony, peace, healing, serenity, stillness, and love. Her work focuses on abstract figurativ and mostly textured compositions of colors and shapes. For this, she uses acrylic and oil paints, various structure pastes, and other artistic materials. Presently she has participated in several exhibitions in Europe and Russia.

Meri Aisala I was born in 1992 in the heart of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Finland. I was an art line student in upper secondary school and continued on to study graphic design in University of Lapland, where I got my bachelor’s and master’s degrees with a major in graphic design and minoring in art history. I am now trying out a new path, studying education psychology and gender studies.

My art tends to skew towards dark surrealism, but sometimes I also find myself lost in some bright and colorful, happier self expression. I like to put my difficult and strong emotions into my art and use it to deal with difficult questions I’m grappling with. I also like to use art as another vessel for my interests in alternative fashion and whatever else I may find myself obsessed with. Ai Nakada The IDENTITY is liberation. I seek to understand the identity from the point of view of cognitive psychology. In order to know about the self, we need to know about human beings. I’m Cognitive psychologist based in London, Royal College of Art. My work is based on samples of real human eyes modelled by AI. On the other hand, it is based on the visual illusion of being able to recognise your own face even when it is upside down.

And the model for knowing about human beings is AI (imitation). Because in order to find a boundary about the self, we need an object of comparison. In particular, it will be the unconscious that reflects the self. The unconscious is greatly reflected in the eyes, as it is said that “the eyes speak louder than the mouth”.

Olesea Sibaeva (Shibaeva) is a universal artist, a candidate member of the Union of Artists of the Republic of Moldova, a member of the Association of Russian Artists of the Republic of Moldova “M-ART”, a member of the Creative Union of Professional Artists of Russia, a member of the Eurasian Creative Guild (London, United Kingdom). Participant of many exhibitions both at local art venues and international ones. Olesea was born in Chisinau on 11/16/1984. She has an Art School, College, University and has Master’s Degree at the Department of Decorative Applied Arts at the Creanga Institute. She also took numerous skill improvement courses. Participated in master classes on textile painting. Olesea is a versatile artist, engaged in all kinds of batik, origami, illustration, teaches fine and decorative arts to children of all ages, and this is not the whole list of creative directions of a young, but already loudly declared herself at the international level, artist.

Anghelina Ponomarenco Anghelina Ponomarenco (legnaultra) is from Transnistria, a small and independent country. At the very young age of 19, she got married and followed her husband to England. Art has always been a part of her life, but at one point art became her great salvation. Having gone through a divorce, loneliness in a foreign country at such a young age, and a lot of other problems, she was not afraid to go headlong into her art. Ewelina Skowronska Ewelina Skowronska (b. 1980) is a Polish visual artist developing her practice in the fields of images and objects through the use of printmaking, drawings, ceramic, and video animation. Her interests include concepts of body, identities, gender and psychology of human relations. She seeks inspiration for her artistic practice in everyday experiences, mythology, poetry, speculative narratives and intangible connections of the world.

I have always been surrounded by Art. I just didn’t realisehow much it served as food for my well-being. I stopped painting for about 10 years, which unknowingly caused an increasing profound instability out of which a personal crisis came knocking. I found the answer to be the simplest of all, I needed to paint. I didn’t remember anymore the liberating storm that comes upon me once I start painting and start to give shape to my internal content. Painting is liberating and healing, instead of using words you use strokes to write your diary. A painting is always the artist very personal perception of something. In my case, I let the brush flow according to feelings, memories, and imagination all together. I always had quite a vivid imagination and sensitive inspiration inspecific topics I grew up with, specifically the “real maravilloso” and “realismo magico” of the Latin-American literature which results in a very organic, flora and fauna shapes.

Angela Su Angela (b.1990) is a self-taught artist based in Southern California, United States. She has been drawing since childhood and won her first award in grade school. She began abstract painting in 2021. Painting is the realization of her authentic self; it allows her to tap into a universal omnipresence beyond the transient physical forms. Salome Kobulashvili is a sculptor and jeweler from Georgia. It happened to be that Salome is a granddaughter of King Erekle, and the last residential house of her ancestors was transferred to the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. Her works are created by mixed media, using mineral stones collected from different parts of Georgia keeping their authentical shape and texture, also using different materials such as smalt, clay, bronze, and silver. Her background in stomatology gave her the ability to see the little details differently and play with them in a creative way. She has been working in this field since 2016 and is actively working on both sculptures and jewelry. Salome’s works are kept in private collections around the world.

Josh Harnack

Josh was raised in Edmonton, Alberta, where his spark for the arts began. After graduating highschool in 2012, Josh moved to Vancouver to study film. During this time, Josh was diagnosed with cancer on three separate occasions, resulting in surgery, radiation treatment, and, ultimately, chemotherapy. In 2015, Josh moved back home to Edmonton, where he began his professional career as an artist. A couple of years later, Josh graduated with from NAIT with distinction, majoring in both Graphic Design and Visual Communication while showing his works in exhibitions and galleries across Western Canada. His themes usually center around belonging, or lack thereof, blending in and standing out. Josh has received awards and grants in both fine art and design and has recently published a book highlighting the triumphs and tribulations of art making.

Arielle Brochin My name is Arielle Brochin, but you can call me Ari. I go by The Golden Canvas, a name that suggests art is unlimited and boundless.

As a young girl that grew up in a predominantly Jewish and traditional town in New Jersey, my art talents were looked down upon and seen as a hobby or a last resort. I was constantly told I would never make money as an artist, and with that I suppressed that side of myself. I felt a large gap in the way I was able to express myself and cope with various things. I lost myself by trying to blend in with the crowd. I didn’t come out of hiding until I read a book about Frida Kahlo titled “What Would Frida Do?”, a book that empowers you to proudly and boldly be yourself. And with that motivation, I started my journey to find myself as a feminist, mixed media artist.

My name is Regina Potapova and I’m a watercolor artist from Moscow, Russia. Participant of numerous exhibitions all around the globe and a member of the International Watercolor Society, Eurasian Art Union and International Arts Foundation. I started painting pretty much since I was able to hold a pencil in my hand. It was almost like an obsession I was born with. I’ve been painting ever since and it was through my exploration with different styles and kinds of paint that I found watercolor to be the one for me. Of all the different kinds of paint, watercolor is the only one capable of projecting the light and transparency the way the should be. Its diversity and uniqueness have almost a hypnotic effect on people admiring it. Nothing else can use a plain white color of paper with such finesse and elegance. It’s almost like a fine-tuned musical instrument that can deliver both harmony and contrast in the same efficient way. What am I ?

Mona Henao Easy to say what I was. A well educated woman, a copywriter, and an independent, powerful female. What will I be tomorrow? Time will tell. Yesterday’s tomorrow made me a janitor. A janitor who found in art an open door to rebuild agonizing dreams. As for who I am, I’ve always been a creative, intelligent woman, a very strong one, and as cliche as it may sound, a fighter. That’s who I am, and that’s what my art is about: it doesn’t really matter what you are, but who you are. It is who you are that makes your legacy, because what you are does not define your soul.

Kirill Gera Arkadyev First of all, in my art, I explore human nature. Thoughts, feelings, and reactions of a person to the issue I have chosen. Sometimes, this statement can be about a particular feeling or a set of feelings. I independently studied psychology (based on the works of L. S. Vygotsky) and was particularly interested in nonverbal psychology. This is how I started my career as an artist-by trying to portray reactions artistically.

I chose symbolism, surrealism and avant-garde as the main tools, a kind of foundation on which I tried to create my own, unique style. And mostly graphics, because I like its accuracy. Also, I am somewhat excited about the irremediability in the graphics. In contrast to painting, in graphic work (thought out storyline and figuratively) there are moments where I can make an irreparable mistake. So every work, for me, is to some extent a risk, a game of fragility.

Anna Novakov is a Serbian-American artist, writer and curator whose practice focuses on the transitory modalities of the olfactory, vestimentary and gastronomic arts. As an artist and certified perfumer, Novakov is able to unpack events through a multisensory artistic lens by examining seemingly inconsequential things, such as the smells of outdoor markets and historic recipes. While her creative practice focuses on conceptual perfumery and textile design she is also invested in the role of scent and touch in the construction of personal and collective memories, fragrance as an aspect of Utopian societies and cooking as a sociopolitical act. The author of dozens of books, articles and exhibition catalogues, Novakov is currently the Art and Technology contributor to Art Press (Paris) and Vice President (USA) of the AICA - International Association of Art Critics (Paris).

Candela Murillo My name is Candela Murillo, I am currently working as a dancer with two companies , Dadodans and Ant physical theater, I also work as a marketing assistant and dansrepeater/ choreographer assistant for Susanna Marx (ITA Amsterdam). I have my own collective ‘Mandarin hands’ where we merge different art disciplines together. Apart from being a dancer, I am a visual artist, constantly working on combining painting and movement together. My most recent research explores the texture of natural pigments on the skin and how that makes you move.

Katrina Thibodeau is a Canadian self-taught contemporary artist. Opening her first business at age 17 this young artist was awarded the Young Entrepreneurship Award of Ontario and has since gone on to be featured in Bridges to Better Businesses, CTV News, and was awarded the Excellence in Entrepreneurship for Sault Ste Marie in 2018. Katrina was a Featured Artist at the OSA Opened Juried Exhibition November 4th to December 31st 2020 and her oil dry brush paintings have been featured in a Solo Exhibition at the Art Gallery of Algoma and the National Art Platform, Culture Days. With hyper realistic portraits being her main focus due to the boldness and simplicity monochromatic brings in allowing her to capture emotion, this artist’s raw talent is depicted on the canvas as she lets the art speak for itself to draw out deep emotion from her viewer.

As an illustrator I focus on nature, portraiture, femininity and female-identifying experiences such as those of bodily autonomy, pleasure, resiliency and healing. I also love exploring relationships, parenthood and the multiplicity of identity and belonging. In addition to numerous gallery exhibitions, fringe festivals and contracted murals I have created artwork for Starbucks UK, The National Museum of Iceland and Proctor & Gamble. I began my training at Reykjavík School of Arts before earning my BA in European Theatre Arts at Rose Bruford College in London. I studied screenwriting at UCLA, creative writing at Stanford.

Through my paintings, I’m fascinated by exploring the transformative power of meditation in front of a work of art, and the powerful uplifting effect it can have. When I lived in London for my second degree in Fashion in 2004, it was a particularly lonely time for me, and I used to make regular pilgrimages to the Rothko room at the Tate Modern just before closing. The rich depth in the seemingly simple layers of colour filled my peripheral vision, it was like being comforted by a large shroud. It had the power to strip my loneliness away leaving me in a new state, comforted, numbing transient anxieties. They held my hand and drew me in. 3 years ago I was referred for ADHD, and the more I learn about it, I’ve become increasingly interested in exploring that crossover with my creative brain, as I rediscover my new identity as a woman, nearly 40 with neurodiversity, I create my work to serve the viewer, with the hope of soothing their anxieties.

He Studied furniture and object design at the Design School of the National Institute of Fine Arts (Formerly the handicraft school of the citadel, Mexico City, founded by the teacher Jose Chávez Morado) with teachers such as Jorge Best (Murals and mosaics) and Gerardo Rodriguez (Industrial Design Manual, 1986). He dedicated himself for a time to the design of wooden furniture in the company Puertas y Muebles de Oaxaca SA de CV owned by Mr. Juan Manuel Rodriguez y Rodriguez. In 1995 he worked for the sculptor Juan Carlos Canfield with whom he collaborates making sets and props for plays such as Pedro Páramo and 10 contemporary dance productions for the INBA dance company directed by Jose Luis Cruz. In 2010 Jorge collaborated again with sculptor Juan Carlos Canfield and Rick Birch in the production and manufacture of EL COLOSO a monumental piece to celebrate the centenary of the Mexican revolution.

My journey of discovering my identity started with the series of paintings called Big Heads when I got diagnosed with Arteriovenerous Malformation in my head and I went through 40 surgeries on my head. My face was constantly changing over the last 22 years to the extent that I completely lost who I was. The Big Heads series became my diary analysing changes of the face. The series transitioned into the Out of the Body Experience series when I experienced leaving my body and exploring the other realm. That impacted my perspective on things, on the self and my surroundings.

Her artistic practice and research explore constructs of Society of the Spectacle in modern Russia, based on Guy Debord’s and Jean Baudrillard’s works. The focus lies on the exploration of the behaviorism within the generations of Perestroika who live and rise up in the Post-Soviet environment, going out against the corporal taboos. As an artist and a consultant, I often feel like I am balancing between two realities in life and am constantly exposed to the feeling of having to make a final decision for one of my two professions. At some point, I actively chose not to decide - and I find it wonderful that I get to devote myself to both my passions. Art is a complement to my consulting and student life, which allows both motifs and materials to vary in texture. Reconciling the heterogeneity of textures is a challenge I face - with two conflicting egos also on a personal level. The development of my paintings is impulsive and finds its own logic in the process. I often work with impasto techniques, so many of the paintings have multiple textures of spray paint, glossy media and chalk elements. The ‘Ciary’ (Corona diary) series consists of four snapshots highlighted in times of self-isolation. Born as a daily art challenge to overcome the routine of the home office.

Since being diagnosed with CLL Leukemia Blood Cancer a few years ago Claire Morton has been studying the health benefits of knitting and felting and uses them as art therapy and a way to express herself. The process of felting requires focus and concentration, so it has an inbuilt meditative quality. It can be a peaceful, calming activity. The quality of wool is tactile and soft, whilst the colours of the wool are vibrant and uplifting. It helps Claire get into a state where she is fully absorbed in what she is doing (often called “flow”) which has similar benefits to meditation. During a creative endeavor like needle felting, not only is the mind focused on the project, but the motion of the hands work to settle the nervous system. Which actively sooths emotions and let’s the rest of the world fade to the background. The Colourful Characters are made from the imagination.

Lisa Marie Forde I’m a 33 year old Fine Art graduate based in the North East. In 2018 I decided to step away from my career in education and return to what I truly love. I’d been an illustrator for many years as a hobby, my studies finally gave me the space to explore the sculptures that had been hiding at the back of my mind.

My work explores the abstract human form and the relationship between individual representation and our environment. Now more than ever, we can become trapped in an echo chamber creating an environment of confirmation bias that re-enforces what we present as ‘self’. Through Virtual Reality, video and sculpture I hope to create a physical intervention, an isolated experience between the viewer and the artwork that is thought provoking. I want the viewer to reflect on how we all perceive ourselves in digital and physical space.

Greg Kent For me woodturning is like treasure hunting, as I turn the wood I uncover the treasure hidden inside. The shape and colours I use should be what a picture frame is to a picture. I like to use either reclaimed wood or wood that was destined for the fire. My aim, working with nature, is to create beautiful and unique pieces. I am a boomer having just turned 60 and just like the wood I use, I am discovering a new identity in a world that does not seem to accept boomers any more. I am using the creative potential I have and making the most of something that people can’t see.

Margaret Hull Margaret Hull is an artist based in Detroit, Michigan. Hull has an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art. She has been awarded residencies in Léhon, France, AZ West in Joshua Tree, California, OxBow School of Art in Saugatuck, Michigan, Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine. Her work has been exhibited at the New Orleans Museum of Art, Cranbrook Art Museum, and Wasserman Projects, among other venues. She is Assistant Professor in the Fashion Design and Merchandising program at Wayne State University.

Veronica Alkmim Franca

Brazilian artist and researcher, lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden and Brazil. Graduated in Fine Arts, Photography and Communication. Verônica is one of the pioneers in Brazil by the introduction of Wearable Art in the early 90s, where her work has been extensively exhibited in museums and cultural institutions. She created an original place in the field of art, fostering interpretations that brought with them innumerable discussions between the fine line that separates design, fashion, and art, inspiring coming generations. Reversing the trend of mass consumption and far from social networks, she questions the culture of excess and its changing aesthetics in today’s world, the limits of advertising in the world of liquid modernity (Bauman) and what can be considered as Art. Currently, Veronica’s work is being structured and cataloged in order to make possible more choices in the field of art and culture.

Varvara Marchenko was born in Russia (Novosibirsk) on May 30, 2005. The artistic talent of the girl was discovered in early childhood, when the family moved to a new apartment. Varya at the age of 1.5, having not yet learned to speak, painted the walls of the rooms, striking relatives with her creative abilities. Over the years, interest in art has increased: she became interested in playing the piano, lace weaving, photography and videography, and later writing poems and songs. In 2012, Varvara decided to go to a children’s art school and successfully enrolled, passing the exams with excellent marks. Now Varya reveals herself in several directions, is actively engaged in popularizing her creativity, and she plans to implement many major projects. The girl always strives for development, but she will never part with her unique handwriting.

Zoey Andreas is a London based Artist who works within mixed media, predominantly sculpture. The artist explores the notion of deconstructing living and existing, presenting historical, biblical, fantasy and literature ideology through their work. Zoey’s work includes recycled and second hand materials and presents colourful interpretations of their take on the world, utopia and beyond. Zoey’s most recent project Garden of Eden was an Installation room with 28 taxidermy animals presenting her idea of an animals point of view and how they felt in the world, the perfect state of existence for animals without human influences such as deforestation. Her work was mentioned on platforms like Daily Mail, VICE and Artsthread.

My name is Alevtina Caravona. I spent my childhood in Ukraine and my teenage years in Moscow. My professional background is an artist, fashion stylist and a model. I graduated from Institute Marangoni with Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Styling, with a focus on graphic design and Art History. Later, I continued my art studies at Heatherley School of Fine Arts, with a focus on oil painting portraits. In my oil paintings, I use real life experiences, live models, music, and personal interests to reflect spiritual and environmental energies that surround us all; i feel that portrait could be a reflection of the soul. My favorite artists are Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Vermeer and Bouguereau , Each of my creations start with real life sketches, but finish with the usage of a full spectrum of pastel, neon and bold colors in oils . Sometimes I think that the paintings have a life of their own . Art feels like an infinite field of possibilities, in which I would like to project for others.

Lena Silva, a contemporary, figurative modern artist, of Portuguese origin, resident in the United Kingdom. A lover of Arts, sophistication, and simplicity, greatly influenced by the Renaissance art period. Patron to the Florence Academy of Arts. Accomplished a BSc In Adults Health and Sciences, the beautiful study of bodies anatomy and physiology. My work I believe, often allures, veiling elements of one’s soul, conveying messages so that the observer might or might not connect. Each piece to its right, is extremely real yet as much insincere. Each of my pieces is perhaps a reflection of my person and hypostasis. Furthermore, through my art and its freedom of expression I am often reminded of my self-value, of who I am, and I became through life experiences.
