City Overview

Westlake Today By Ken McEntee Crocker Park today is a lively destination not only for locals, but also for people from a large radius around Westlake. The mixed use retail, office and residential complex is a Downtown style area where big city energy meets small town charm.

Appropriately Crocker Park, representing the Westlake of today, is located on the site of farmland that not long ago made up the Westlake of yesterday. When the holiday season begins, thousands of Westlake residents pour into Crocker Park to witness the annual tree lighting that has become one of the community’s recent, but cherished traditions. A large part of the city’s future is represented in the planned addition of American Greetings’ world headquarters, which will highlight the expansion of North Union Farmer’s Market: Every Saturday 9am-1pm starting April 14-December Crocker Park’s Main Street corridor. 22 located at Crocker Road and Union Street by Regal Theater. The walk features pavers that commemorate Westlake’s 24 founding families. “The city, all of the community groups and the Historical Society all came together on our numerous bicentennial projects and events,” Stanton says. “It was a great learning experience for everybody, from long-time residents to young kids. We’re a community that embraces our history, but we also know that every day is history. To the young people, Crocker Park and the other newer parts of Westlake are their history.” In the present, says Michael Zinicola, of the EZ Sales Team at Keller Williams Realty, Westlake has “every amenity known to man. It’s a great place to raise a family. The kids will have access to everything they need and they will be exposed to a lot of experiences.” Along with shopping and dining to satisfy any taste, Westlake is home to first class medical facilities – like St. John Medical Center – and education centers, like the Cleveland State University Extension and Cuyahoga Community College’s Corporate College. Zinicola says Westlake offers quality schools and city services

City of Bay Village

Charmer

A Real By Ken McEntee

A native of Cleveland’s West Park neighborhood, Michael

Zinicola never envisioned himself living in a lakefront home in cozy Bay Village. But after falling in love with a Cape Cod he was listing, the team leader for the EZ Sales Team at Keller Williams Realty decided to buy the home himself. “It was affordable and I was able to restore it the way I wanted it,” Zinicola recalls. “It’s like a small vacation home in the Hamptons. You don’t find opportunities like this in other cities. It’s too expensive. In Bay, it’s possible.” Once he moved in six years ago, he fell in love with the town as well. “Never in my life have I lived in a friendlier community,” Zinicola says. “There’s a lot to do, and you can participate as much or as little as you want. It’s a laid-back community that is friendly, but not in your face.” And contrary to the perception that Bay Village homes are out of the budgets of many homebuyers, Zinicola says

wonderful homes are available at a wide variety of price points. “Bay doesn’t have cookie cutter communities,” he says. “There are so many unique homes that you can find something in every price range. Bay has a wide spectrum of people. It’s a great place to buy a first home and settle in. And it is also a city where you can move up to a mansion on the lake.” With its tree-lined streets, 130 acres of parkland, more than five miles of lakefront – and the conspicuous absence of industry and big box stores – Bay Village is the quintessential small town community. Intentionally planned to avoid commercial development, the town of about 17,000 residents

Bay Village has a wide variety of homes available – from mansions on the lake, to historic Victororian as well as quaint cottage-type homes in all price ranges.

is about 97 percent residential. “Bay is one of those cities that has everything,” Zinicola says. “There are small parks throughout the city in addition to the large Cahoon Park and the Huntington Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks. To have that much recreational land in the center of town is very unique.” The Huntington reservation is home to the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center, BAYarts, the community’s arts campus, and the Huntington Playhouse. “Bay was really established as a community where it is about the family,” Zinicola says. In 2010, Bay Village celebrated its Bicentennial with a parade and a community- wide celebration that culminated in the lighting of the new cupola on the Town’s historic Community House. A telltale sign of Bay’s desirability is the value of its homes, Zinicola says.

“While the real estate market has gone down in recent years, Bay has weathered the storm very well,” he says. “Prices of Bay homes have not declined as much as most communities in the area and sales continue to hold from year to year. That’s a testament to the reputation of the city, the schools, the unique housing stock and the small-town environment. All those are quality of life issues that Bay offers.”

Dear Bay Village friends and neighbors:

Bay Students Serve the Community with Pride

There is no doubt that our high quality Bay Village Schools strengthens the quality of life in Bay Village far beyond the walls of our schools. Projects such as the Bay Middle School Great Rake Out, Bike to School, and our latest partnership in Bay Village Candidates Night bring generations together in meaningful ways that benefit and inspire all. Our musicians lead the Memorial Day Parade, the Homecoming Parade, and the local merchants’ Boo Village Parade at Halloween. Our jazz bands bring senior citizens and their younger counterparts to their feet during Clint Keener Superintendent our annual Ballroom Blitz. Our student musicals, dramas and holiday concerts have become cherished traditions, and over time we have had to add additional evening performances to accommodate the heavy demand. The level of dedication to service and to improving the world exhibited by our students and staff continues to amaze me. Many thousands of dollars are raised each year to help

others, both within and outside of the Bay Village community. From collections of food and clothing, to funds raised to help the needy and advance medical research, our students and staff seem to never tire in their efforts to serve others. Of course, it is our high quality education that is our focus. Our students and staff work hard to reach the highest levels of achievement in a fast-paced world where technology evolves continuously and expectations for success are ever-changing. We are all grateful for a community that supports our efforts not just financially, but in many volunteer and partnership efforts. A supportive community, involved parents, dedicated staff and motivated students combine to make our school district one in which all our community members can take pride, and one which adds significantly to making Bay Village a highly attractive community to call home.

Westlake Porter Public Library:

For almost as long as Westlake has been around there’s

been a library here. Westlake Porter Public Library was founded in 1884 through a bequest by Leonard Porter. He left Dover Township (as Westlake was then called) $1,000 and his book collection with the request that a lending library be established for the benefit of the community. The library that circulated 24 books in 1893 now circulates over 1.4 million books per year, and has been a part of Westlake for 127 of Westlake’s 200 years. What is the secret of its longevity? The people of Westlake, who use the library day in and day out. In an average hour, one

can observe visitors browsing the large book, CD, DVD and downloadable media collections, attending computer classes and programs, meeting with their community groups in the meeting room wing, seeking assistance from the library’s friendly professional staff, and using the public computers or WiFi system to access the Internet. WPPL is a vital part of the community. It’s where Westlake students get help with their homework, where new Americans can learn English, where the unemployed can research prospective employers and improve their job hunting skills, where would-be business owners can find out how to write a business plan, and much more. Financial

Westlake &Bay Village Community Guide

Planning for the “New Retirement” We’ve all heard about the “new retirement”, the mix of

work and play that many of us assume we will have in our lives one day. While this is becoming a cultural assumption among baby boomers, it is interesting to see that certain financial assumptions haven’t really changed with the times. There are two financial misconceptions that baby boomers can fall prey to – assumptions that could prove financially harmful for their future.

#1 - Assuming retirement will last 10-15 years. Historically, retirement has lasted about 10-15 years for most Americans. The key word here is “historically.” When Social Security was created in 1933, the average American could anticipate living to age 61. By 2005, life expectancy for the average American had increased to 78. However, some of us may live much longer. The Census Bureau believes that 7.3 million Americans will be 85 or older in 2020, up from 5.1 million 15 years earlier. If you’re reading this article, chances are you might be wealthy or at least “affluent.” And if you are, you likely have good health insurance and access to excellent health care. You may be poised to live longer because of these two factors. Here’s the bottom line: every year, the possibility is increasing that your retirement could last 20 or 30 years…or longer. So assuming you’ll only need 10 or 15 years worth of retirement money could be a big mistake.

Holding onto your retirement money is certainly important; so is your retirement income and quality of life. There are three financial issues that can affect your quality of life and/or income over time: taxes, health care costs and inflation. Will the minimal inflation we’ve seen at the start of the 2010s continue for years to come? Don’t count on it. What happens is that over time, even 3-4% inflation gradually saps >> Continued on next page

#2 - Assuming too little risk. Our appetite for risk declines as we get older, and rightfully so. Yet there may be a danger in becoming too risk-averse.

your purchasing power. Your dollar buys less and less. Taxes will likely be higher in the coming decade. So tax reduction and tax-advantaged investing have taken on even more importance. Health care costs are climbing – we need to be prepared financially for the cost of acute, chronic and long-term care. As you retire, you may assume that an extremely conservative approach to investing is mandatory. But given how long we may live – and how long retirement may last – growth investing is extremely important. How are you envisioning retirement right now? Has your vision of retirement changed? Is retiring becoming more and more of a priority? Are you retired and looking to improve your finances? Regardless of where you’re at, it is vital to avoid the common

misconceptions and proceed with clarity. — Article provided by Elios Financial Group. Call us at 440-617-9100 for a FREE no obligation consultation.

Their many specialties include paver patios and walkways, outdoor kitchens, decorative walls and pillars, natural hardscape installations, LED accent lighting, lawn and plant installations and in-ground pool installation as well. We want them to keep using us for all their landscape needs. Whether it’s a clean-up, weekly grounds maintenance, snow plowing or installing a beautiful and unique outdoor living space.” “We are an environmentally-friendly company as well,” he states. “We are a part of the ‘Green Team’ in our community and we try to stay conscious of that in all of the projects we are involved in. We use permeable pavers, for example, which helps greatly reduce the peak discharge of surface run-off and

in return can reduce flooding downstream and sediment in our water. Using low-voltage LED lighting is another way to conserve energy, as it uses 75% less power and lasts up to 40 times longer. We also use organic soils and mulch in many of our landscapes, it is better for your lawn, your plant material and your family.” Tony credits Ground Work’s success over the past few years to their great reputation of building meaningful relationships with their customers. “We do what we say we are going to do, and we back everything up with a solid warranty. Our clients trust in our work and know that our staff is very knowledgeable and professional. Will ALL Americans Be Overweight by 2048? That’s what a study

conducted by Dr. Youfa Wang, from John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, is predicting (Journal of Obesity 2008). The study is assuming a lot, but the main point is to show how our future will look if current trends continue without intervention. If anything, it’s a huge wake-up call. Regardless of what research predicts, it only takes a quick glance around you to notice that people are getting unhealthier every single day. The increased intake of unhealthy food and a decreased need for physicality due to a technology-driven world are contributing to this epidemic. Obesity has devastating consequences:

q It is now the leading cause of preventable death. q It affects 1 out of every 3 kids in the country. q It increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, liver disease,

and some cancers, among others.

q It puts a major burden on our health care system. In 2008

dollars, these costs totaled approximately $147 billion (Finkelstein, 2009).

Even more devastating is that it’s actually the most preventable disease that exists. Nonetheless, it’s why we need to get our kids moving more than ever and help them establish healthy habits now that will last a lifetime. It starts with us, as parents, as adults, as role models, to get them there. It’s not just about telling them what to do, but most importantly about doing what we want them to do. Kids learn by watching. Therefore we must live and be the change that we want to see in them. Join us on our movement to create a healthier generation today to prevent these alarming statistics from happening. Kids want to be healthy; it’s our obligation to help them get there. Fit Me Up’s mission is to teach, model, and instill in youth the fundamental knowledge, skills, and motivation to living a fit, healthy, and spiritual lifestyle. — By Paul Theodore, MSW, ACE, IYCA & CEO, Fit Me Up Fitness.

Your teeth look nice, but… Did you know that your teeth are the only hard surfaces in your body that meet without cushioning? Consequently when they do not function in perfect harmony they will start to let you know… chipping, cracking, sensitivity and wear can all be signs that your “occlusion,” or “bite,” may be out of balance. Also, some of the more commonly known TMJ symptoms such as headaches, joint pain and sore muscles can be signs that your teeth do not come together properly. Your entire head and neck area is susceptible to physiological changes if your bite is out of alignment. Dr. Nick Gravino loves creating gorgeous looking teeth and knows it is only one facet of a beautiful smile. When fabricated teeth such as veneers, crowns, bridges and implants are placed in your mouth, Dr. Gravino’s skill and knowledge of perfecting your occlusion is essential to help keep your investment secure over time. To learn more about the role occlusion plays in your dental health, or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Gravino, please visit his website at www.nickgravinodds.com. Health & Wellness

Medical Minute By Ewa Gross-Sawicka, MD, PhD University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute

There is an increasing awareness among women of their risk for heart disease. Translating this awareness into personal risk has been challenging and is a contributing reason for why heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. What are the classic risk factors? ■ Classic risk factors are divided into modifiable and nonmodifiable categories. Modifiable include: diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, obesity, and sedentary life style. Non-modifiable are age and family history of premature heart disease (men before the age of 55 or women before the age of 65). ■ A woman’s lifetime risk to develop and die from cardiovascular disease is 1 in 3 (33%). ■ Sixty-five million Americans are affected with hypertension, 35 million are women. ■ Sixty percent of American women are overweight or obese.

y

pp ay a H thd iB r

Being overweight increases a woman’s risk of diabetes threefold and obese individuals are at a nine fold increased risk. ■ Physical inactivity is a predictor of diabetes. Obtaining 30 minutes of brisk walking everyday reduces the risk.

How can I identify the warning signs of a heart attack better? A recent study of 500 women presenting to the ER with a myocardial infarction found that 95% had new and different symptoms up to one month prior to their heart attack. At the top of the list: unexEwa Gross-Sawicka, M.D. plained or unusual fatigue (71%), sleep disturbance (48%), shortness of breath (42%), indigestion (39%), and anxiety (35%). Chest pain when present may be described as a pressure, aching or squeezing, radiating to the neck, shoulders, back, arm or jaw. Women often experience milder symptoms compared to men. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, cold sweat, dizziness, palpitations, and weakness. Seek immediate medical help for any of the above symptoms for recognizing and treating a heart attack promptly dramatically improves a patient’s chances for survival. Learn more at UHhospitals.org/heart or call 1-866-UH4-CARE for an appointment. See ad on the inside back cover.

Ohioans Support Animal Welfare Reform Efforts Momentum appears to be on the side of those who have been trying for years to curb abusive dogbreeding in Ohio. Groups opposed to dog auctions, which are the primary market for dogs bred in cruel “puppy mills,” collected 7,000 signatures in a 2009 petition effort. In 2010, they increased that to more than 77,000, but that still was less than half the number needed to qualify. Recently, they turned in more than 160,000 signatures, of which more than 118,000 were certified valid by Secretary of State Jon Husted, surpassing the 115,570 requirement. Their progress isn’t hard to understand. The more Ohioans learn of the cruelty inherent in puppy mills and dog auctions, the more inclined they are to support reform efforts. Ohio’s reputation for having among the weakest animal-welfare laws is

nothing to be proud of. Puppy-mill operators often keep dogs in filthy cages and provide little or no medical care, using females to breed litter after litter until they’re used up. The breeding dogs as well as their offspring are more likely than normal to suffer diseases and genetic abnormalities, typically unknown to consumers until long after they’ve adopted and taken a puppy home from a pet store that buys from dog auctions. Let’s hope that 2012 is the year that the state finally sheds its puppy-mill reputation. Senior Living

Westlake &Bay Village Community Guide

Tips for Selecting the Right Assisted Living Facility Moving away from home

for any reason can be a stressful time, but when we are talking about a senior giving up some of their independence and belongings, it’s an entire lifestyle change. With over 36,000 assisted living facilities in the United States, it takes a little homework to find the facility that can best meet the needs and interests of any senior. Location should be the first consideration. Determine whether the senior’s needs could best be served by an assisted living facility close to home, where they may have many companions and participate in many activities or an assisted living facility closer to family located elsewhere. Use the Yellow Pages or conduct a web search for Assisted Living or Residential Care Facilities. Create a list of facilities, gathering brochures and pricing information. Based on the facility’s services, amenities and pricing information,

schedule an appointment to tour the top three communities and have your questions answered. While touring, take note of the cleanliness of the building. Is the building attractive and homelike? Do the current residents look happy and well cared for? Do the staff members look happy or hurried and stressed? Can you see your loved one living there? While visiting ask specifically about monthly fees and cost for additional services such as bathing and medication administration. Also ask about meals, housekeeping and laundry services, transportation and recreational programming. Finally, ask for the admission and discharge criteria. After touring all of the facilities, take your loved one to visit the top two you feel they would like the best. Get their opinion and then go with your gut feeling, it’s usually right.

The wonderful, well-established West Shore communities of Bay Village and Westlake have a great deal to offer you and your family! Located just 20 minutes west of Downtown, these communities have it all. Scenic parks, such as Huntington Beach and Bradley Woods offer all of the nature and outdoor activity you could want. Westlake’s Crocker Park provides all of your shopping, dining, and entertainment needs in one convenient location! Let’s not forget about Lake Erie — one of the Great Lakes is right in our back yard! In addi-

tion to all of this, Bay has the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center which is a great, interactive place for families to spend time and learn together! All of these features make for a wonderful place to live, but what makes these communities two of the most soughtafter suburbs in Greater Cleveland is their neighborhoods and schools. In a real estate market that has been very challenging in the past five years, these communities have weathered the storm better than most. This is because, “When housing markets go south, areas with exceptional schools tend to hold their value better than the market overall” (Wall Street Journal). Westlake and Bay are just that — Exceptional! Both school districts continue to be rated “Excellent with Distinction” consistently by the State of Ohio. Now is a great time to take advantage of all that these communities have to offer, and a great time to purchase a home in your dream community! — Submitted by Jim Fowler of Ohio Family Realty
