and adopted by the Township’s elected officials when talking about Boardman as it has the largest commercial, retail, restaurant, and entertainment sectors in Mahoning County. Being the 12th largest township in the state of Ohio, with a residential population estimated at over 40,000 and a daytime population estimated at over 100,000, Boardman Township is the commercial and residential hub in Mahoning County. Over the past two years, Boardman has been fortunate to see major reinvestment into the community by our local businesses. Serving Those In Need The Boardman Township Fire Department has been pleased to

serve the community since 1923. Since that time, many changes have taken place as the community has grown. The Boardman Fire Department currently serves its residents and guests from three different locations. The main station, Station #71 is located at 136 Boardman-Poland Road and is in the heart of the community. Station #73 serves the northwest area of the community and is located at the corner of Shields and Lockwood Boulevard. The third station is Station #74 and it is located at 6169 South Avenue and serves the Northeast and Southeast areas of the township. The fire department serves as “risk managers” of the Township, answering a multitude of calls from structure fires to EMS. They also answer hazardous material and specialized rescue calls (including motor vehicle crashes with entrapment) as well as storm-related emergencies such as wires down and flooding. In 2011, the fire department answered 3,881 calls for assistance. The department is currently staffed with 38 career firefighters and one administrative assistant. This includes the Chief, three Assistant Chiefs, George D. Brown, Fire Chief three Captains, two Lieutenants and 29 Firefighters. The Chief and two Lieutenants work a forty hour week and the rest of the staff works shifts of 24 hours on-duty, 48 hours off-duty. The Fire Prevention Bureau provides building and code enforcement inspections to the community’s 3,300 businesses. This is to ensure a safe environment for those who visit the “Shopping Destination of the Valley.” The Fire Department is proud to have a strong public education emphasis and provides several programs throughout the year to educate adults and children on safe practices in many areas involving safety. The Department was especially excited in 2011 to kick off a new program entitled “No Child Sleeps Unprotected” which provided a free smoke detector to families needing them. The program was such a success that it has been expanded to address the needs of senior citizens. The Boardman Fire Department is rich in heritage but also has advanced the “pride and ownership” of serving residents with care and skill, which contributes to the comfort of living in a community that is “A Nice Place to Call Home.” For questions about Boardman Fire Service, please contact Chief George D. Brown at 136 Boardman-Poland Road or call 330-726-7199.

Sylvester Construction: , Building on Boardman s Bright Future

Joseph Sylvester Construction Co., Inc.

is a full-service commercial real estate development and management firm founded in 1956 by Joseph Sylvester, Sr. and his wife Anna Marie. The company specializes in high-quality offices, medical complexes, nursing homes, warehousing and industrial facilities as well as restaurants and retail shopping centers. Joe Sr. served as the socalled “brain child” behind the area’s first residential and professional condominiums. The continued success of this family-owned company is reflected in its exceptional service to clients, tenants and partners alike, from concept to completion and beyond! Community and family have always been a focal point for the Sylvesters. They have not only chosen to stay within the area for over 50 years since the company’s launch, but have participated in several donation projects such as St. Charles Church, the Boardman Fire Department and Boardman Park. CEO Joe Sylvester, Jr. stated, “We feel Boardman has been a great place to locate our business, mainly because Boardman is a hub of the Mahoning Valley’s local businesses, industrial parks, retail, restaurants and more. It is an area full of energy and growth, with strong medical locations like St. Elizabeth’s and the Southwoods Surgery Center, as well as the BCB Field of Dreams, one of the most beautiful local baseball and softball complexes I’ve seen. We

are also centrally located between Cleveland and Pittsburgh and less than a day’s drive away to 80% of the country’s population.” He continued, adding, “There is an abundance of talented workforce within the area and the cost of living is low, which provides a cushion for new businesses and families.” Lastly, in reference to the future of the Boardman area he stated, “As always, we are looking towards a bright horizon for the area. We have great families, a skilled workforce that continues to expand, plenty of shopping and restaurants, and most importantly - Boardman is a community with the desire to constantly re-form and grow so our children and their futures will be full of success.”

4. Reducing the loan term – Refinancing to a lower

rate while keeping your monthly payment about the same can shorten the length of your loan and, in turn, reduce the amount of interest you pay over time. Paying off the loan sooner also helps build equity in your home faster.

5. Turning home equity into cash – By refinancing more than your loan balance, you may be able to cover big expenses, such as college education or home improvements.

Refinancing can be a great financial move if it reduces your mortgage payment, shortens the term of your loan or helps you to build equity more quickly. When used carefully, it can also be a valuable tool in getting your debt under control. To help you decide if refinancing makes sense, allow a Mortgage Loan Specialist at Home Savings to take a careful look at your financial picture. Boardman Schools Receive High Grades Dear Boardman Citizens: The Boardman Schools have long been known for its excellence in the “Three A’s” - its Academic programs, Arts programs, and in Athletics. I would like to add a fourth “A” this year for our fiscal Accountability. We are currently operating the district with $2 million less than we operated the district in 2009 – all with the same enrollment. This is the result of the cuts in revenue from the state, the elimination of the local Tangible Personal Property Tax, and the effects of losing students through open enrollment and the charter school movement. Fortunately, our employees have taken a base salary pay freeze for the last five years that has helped keep us afloat. Considering all these factors, the Boardman Local School Frank Lazzeri, Superintendent District continues to be rated “Excellent” by the Ohio Department of Education. This is definitely the result of our hard-working and dedicated staff! Academically, the Boardman Local School District earned its fifth consecutive District Excellent rating and ninth total Excellent rating from the Ohio Department of Education (ODE). The district met 100% of the quality standards established by ODE. All seven schools in the district have also achieved an

Despite staff reductions in the arts, our programs continue to be among the best in the state. Our students were very successful again this year in the Scholastic Art Show winning numerous gold key and silver key awards. High School Students Write to Win As part of their Advanced Placement English requirement, Boardman High School juniors select at least two essay contests to enter per school year. According to their teacher, Randy Nord, a key element of the writing process is publishing. Therefore, the essay contest assignment is an attempt to encourage advanced students to write for an audience beyond their English classroom. During the 2011-2012 school year, the AP students enjoyed great success with their writing. In December, Dominion Ohio announced that the company selected Mikel Zeidenstein as the first place winner in the Strong Men and Women Essay Contest. For his essay on former Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams, Mikel won a laptop computer and $1000 for his school.

Furthermore, the Ohio Civil Rights Commission announced that Lyndsay Olenych won first place in their annual Martin Luther King Day, Jr. Essay Contest. Lyndsay read her awardwinning essay at a ceremony in Columbus, Ohio. In addition, the Mahoning County Branch of the Veterans of Foreign Wars awarded Travis Filicky first place in the region for his essay on the topic, “Is There Still Pride in Serving in Our Military?” The VFW presented Travis with a $25 award as well as a certificate from the local post. Continuing with the students’ achievements, the Mahoning County Bar Association awarded two Boardman High students monetary prizes for their entries in the annual Law Day Essay Contest. Earning first place for his essay about the legal issues related to Facebook, Travis Filicky won $500. In addition, Georgia Kasamias earned $100 for her sixth place entry in the same contest. Remarkably, the AP English class entered six essay contests throughout the school year, and earned five awards. Regarding her students’ success in these contests, Mrs. Nord asserts, “I sincerely hope that the students will continue pursuing THE WRITE STUFF: Front row avenues where they can share their writing with the (L-R): Lyndsay Olenych, Georgia public, whether in the form of essay contests, scholarship Kasamias, Travis Filicky; Back row: opportunities, or submissions to periodicals.” Randy Nord, Mikel Zeidenstein.

The Assumption Village Collaborates with St. Elizabeth’s Acute Rehabilitation Unit The Assumption Village is looking to expand

its rehabilitation unit to better suit the needs of our aging population. Most importantly, The Assumption Village is not looking to just grow its census, but to truly become a sub-acute rehabilitation unit. Dr. Terry Puet, who shares the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago’s concept for sub-acute therapy, says, “A sub-acute rehabilitation unit should have the following: a rehabilitation physician; rehabilitation nurses; physical, occupational and speech therapies; a team process to coordinate care, and a relationship with a CARF-accredited acute rehab unit.” The collaboration between The Assumption Village and the acute rehabilitation unit at St. Elizabeth Health Center establishes all of those criteria. There are times when a patient is not yet ready for acute rehabilitation, but would benefit from a period at a sub-acute unit for strengthening and conditioning, then either return to an acute rehabilitation setting or return to the community. This type of relationship will decrease unnecessary hospital

re-admissions, provide the most appropriate setting for patients for healing, and enable patients to return to the community more independently. The Assumption Village is known as a leader in skilled nursing care in our community and is rated by ltcohio.org with a 97.2% family satisfaction score. The Assumption Village is nestled in a pleasant and quiet 20-acre wooded and grassy knoll area in North Lima, just a few minutes south of the Southern Park Mall. Akron Children’s continued commitment to providing convenient, high-quality pediatric care for local families is evident in its addition of new services, specialists and locations in the area. In 2010, Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics (ACHP) opened its first pediatric primary care practice in the Mahoning Valley, located on the Beeghly campus in Building C. Within its first year, the practice’s growth resulted in the addition of new pediatricians to help meet the needs of local families. ACHP also expanded into Trumbull County in 2011 by opening a practice in Warren. Both practices are part of the hospital’s network of 18 ACHP offices, providing comprehensive care for infants, children and teens, including routine checkups; immunizations and physicals; treatment for illness and injury; and chronic disease management. To provide local families with additional specialized care, the hospital also added new subspecialty services to the Boardman Medical Pavilion, located at 8423 Market Street, including:

Along with new subspecialty services in the Valley, Akron Children’s Hospital also strengthened existing services and acquired several new specialists in the following areas to help meet patient demands: Endocrinology, Orthopedics and Pulmonology. Elder Care

for Family Members Submitted by Greenbriar Healthcare Center

Making the decision to move loved ones from their

home to a live-in facility for long-term care isn’t easy. Change is difficult in any situation, especially when it involves making decisions for someone you love who may not embrace the final outcome. With many options and information available today regarding care for the elderly, a difficult process can be easier on everyone. How do you know your loved one needs more care? Many life events can result in the need for re-evaluate current living arrangements for the elderly. The most common events that cause people to look into a facility for care include: • Problems with mental health issues, serious forgetfulness and Alzheimer’s • A fall that causes a broken hip or other bone. Many times a person will fall and require surgery, followed by physical therapy or rehabilitation in a hospital or nursing home. While many people return to their normal routines, others remain in the nursing home. • The death of a Spouse, especially when they were the caregiver.

elderly care with your loved one before the need arises. Have information already gathered about different options in your specific community. Once you’ve selected a home for your loved one, become as involved as possible in order to nip problems in the bud and make things as comfortable as possible for them. Visit as often as you can and talk to the staff about any concerns or questions you may have. Staying involved will help all of you reach a comfort level that will benefit the entire family.

What types of living and long-term care facilities are available? Generally there are three types of facilities where elderly loved ones can reside. Independent Living These are apartment-type complexes that offer to help if necessary, but not regularly. This provides better security and closer help, but residents basically live on their own. Assisted Living These facilities are licensed by the state and offer more staff on site, including nurses and aids to assist with medication and provide some help with getting around. Nursing Home These facilities provide 24-hour, seven-days-a-week-staff including physicians on call. In addition to these facilities, you can also choose a program where caregivers come into the home to help with daily chores or medical care. How Can I Make the Transition to a Nursing Home Easier on My Loved One? Start by being upfront and honest as possible. PAST & PRESENT: St. James Meeting House (left) in Boardman Park; Don and Patsy Anne Zabel, long time members of the Boardman Historical Society where Patsy Anne is the current President and Don is the Treasurer.

Boardman Park

St. James Meeting House: This year marks the 40th anniversary of St. James Meeting House being a part of Boardman Park. St. James Meeting House, Boardman Township’s most prominent historical landmark, sits proudly atop a knoll as a symbol of our Community’s heritage, and is considered one of Boardman’s greatest treasures. Also known as the “Church of the Boardman’s,” St. James Episcopal Church was the first Episcopal Church in Ohio, and the first home of the oldest Episcopal parish in the Connecticut Western Reserve. St. James was moved to the Park and renamed St. James Meeting House after a community-wide effort saved the church from demolition in 1972 and was entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Today, St. James is a popular place for several hundred weddings a year and is used for memorial services, baptisms, concerts and public meetings.

Where the Benefits are Endless... Since 1947, Boardman Township Park,

the “Green Oasis” of the Community has been serving the recreational needs of our Community. The Park is located in the heart of Boardman and its mission is to provide a diversity of recreational and educational opportunities in an environment that lends itself to pleasant family experiences, and to preserve areas of natural habitat. The 227 acre Park has approximately 60 acres of land developed with a variety of recreational facilities. The balance of acreage is preserved for natural habitat, which supports many native species of plants and animals. It is this unique and diverse footprint of facilities and programs that is responsible for making the Park one of the most popular recreational facilities in the Mahoning Valley. The Park also offers a variety of indoor meeting rooms and open air pavilions with seating from 42 people up to 232. This is a perfect location for special family events or a great place for businesses to hold meetings and events. Reservations can be made by calling the Park Office at 330-726-8105, M – F, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or online at www.boardmanpark.com 18

Homes & Real Estate houses by looking at pictures or driving by before visiting. Here are a few helpful suggestions:

Preparing Your Home for Sale For most people, acquiring a new home means selling the current one,

which can seem overwhelming. No one desires their home to be on the market forever or to suffer a loss in sales. This is less likely to happen if the homeowner takes the time to prepare their home for sale. Making a great first impression is important. Most people are looking for homes that are move-in ready. The hardest part of preparing your home for sale will be realizing that it is no longer your home; it is now a product. Preparing a house for sale starts from the curb and through the house to the back yard. With the availability of the Internet, people will often rule out

• Outside - Pick up all trash and remove clutter. Mow, trim hedges and pull weeds. Give your front door a new coat of paint. Add a few potted plants or flowers to the steps or porch. • Edit - Pack up some of your belongings and remove all the obstacles that might distract the potential homebuyer from “seeing” the home. • Remove - all personal and family photos and collections so that the potential homebuyer can envision this house as theirs; busy wallpaper and repaint walls with neutral colors; also clean all closets, cabinets and pantries, thus making your storage areas seem more spacious. • Clean - all windows inside and move window treatments up, allowing more light into the room and making windows appear larger, and clean bathrooms and kitchens to shine. Insurance Advice for Homeowners Many customers may be going through sticker shock when they open the renewal notice for their homeowners insurance. Premiums are going up and the big question is why? There are several reasons behind premium increases, including loss from catastrophes - severe weather and forest fires - which have increased in the past ten years. One severe hail storm can total tens of millions of dollars in losses. And the cost of home repair and construction is up significantly, meaning the cost of settling claims is up. So what can you do to keep insurance costs down? Increase your deductible, for a start. A deductible of $1,000 instead of $250 can cut your premium by up to 25 percent. It’s best to cover a small repair or stolen item yourself and save your insurance coverage for a major loss. In the face of a rapidly changing insurance market, we all can learn new ways to wisely use our homeowners insurance. Don’t take insurance for granted. An independent insurance agent, like James & Sons Insurance, will take the time to get to know your property and can offer other practical steps to help keep insurance costs down. — Submitted by James & Sons Insurance

To avoid filing a claim in the first place, take care of routine maintenance: n Replace worn rubber hoses on washing machines

and dishwashers, a simple step to prevent water damage. You can find reinforced hoses at your local hardware store. n Keep pipes in good repair, especially in cold

weather, to help prevent bursting and possible flooding. n Keep gutters free of debris and inspect the roof

frequently for signs of leaks or wear. n In fire-prone terrain, clear underbrush, woodpiles

and trees away from the house. n Keep a home contents inventory, including a

videotape or photographs of your belongings, up to date.

I had the privilege of serving the Boardman Township community in the late 80’s when I was the associate pastor at St. Luke Parish. I was very excited about returning to Boardman to become pastor of St. Charles Borromeo Parish in 2007. St. Charles is a vibrant, faith-filled community with services, ministries, and activities to fit all ages and interests. We are a stewardship Father Rogers parish that seeks to make use of the rich variety of gifts that God has given to each of our members. We hope everyone finds his or her chance to make a difference in the life of his or her community. Through our liturgical life, our parish school, and our educational programs, we enrich and educate hundreds of people each week proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In 2011, St. Charles Borromeo Parish celebrated our eighty-fifth anniversary. We invite you to come and be part of our next 85 years! Join us!

band performed at Disney World over winter recess. The BHS choral program continues to thrive under the guidance of newly appointed director Linda Smrek. During a recent competitive trip to Virginia Beach both the orchestra and choral music programs received “superior ratings” for their performances. Athletically, the Spartans were highly successful again this school year. We won Federal League titles in both football and baseball. Also, Ahmet Olgun was the Federal League coach of the year in boys soccer, Mark D’Eramo was Federal League coach of the year in football, and Bob Beam was Federal League coach of the year in baseball. Mark Hadley was the league player of the year in track and Dan Popio was player of the year in baseball. Senior swimmer Emily Bodamer received the “Commissioner’s Award” as the top female student athlete of the year in the Federal League. Finally, we had athletes compete at the state level in cross country, swimming, boys bowling, boys track, girls track, and wrestling. Our coaches and athletes are to be commended for an outstanding year. It is clear to see that your Boardman Local School District continues to be one of the premier school systems in the state of Ohio. I thank all the Boardman residents for their past and continued support of our students and the many high quality programs in our district. Sincerely, Frank Lazzeri, Superintendent 28
