Welcome to Brecksville! It is a distinct pleasure and certainly with a great deal of pride that I welcome you to the 2012 - 2013 edition of the Brecksville Community Guide. We are pleased that Image Builders Marketing has once again agreed to showcase our wonderful city with this colorful guide that illustrates why living, working and operating a business in our town is such a rewarding experience.
We’re proud of our city’s beautiful, safe and uncongested environment with easy access to all major interstate highways. We are a community, “Building our future with respect for our past,” a philosophy that honors our Western Reserve heritage but also underscores our attitude of business-friendly growth. In 2012, I was honored to begin my seventh term as Mayor and my enthusiasm for continuing to build one of the finest communities in Cuyahoga County remains as strong as it was when I first took office in 1988. Please do not hesitate to call me if I can be of assistance to you. Sincerely,
Mayor Jerry N. Hruby City of Brecksville Left to right: Brecksville City Hall; BBH ‘Power of Pen’ Regional Championship Team; The Playground at the Community Center.

By Mayor Jerry N. Hruby As I mentioned in my official welcome, Brecksville has a business-friendly philosophy which includes our longstanding policy of controlled growth. We welcome the opportunity to provide direct assistance to our established companies and those companies interested in relocating or expanding here, as well as to entrepreneurs just beginning their business life. The City of Brecksville is a business advocate and we are also a connector. We help companies navigate site relocation and retention by uniting all the necessary elements to assure that Brecksville is an ultimate business location. And we can link you with state, county and local incentive packages. 4

Our City family strives to provide the best possible services that our business community and residential community deserve and expect.
You Are In Good Company In Brecksville Brecksville is home to a strong cluster of high-tech businesses including Lubrizol; AT&T; Rambus, one of the world’s premier technology licensing companies specializing in the invention and design of high-speed chip interfaces; Maverick Industries; the Cleveland Clinic Data Center and the PNC Bank Processing Center. Brecksville is the headquarters of The House of LaRose, one of the largest distributors of Anheuser Bush products in the country, and the corporate headquarters of Truenorth, owner or supplier
of more than 320 Shell service stations and convenience stores in Illinois, Ohio and Michigan. The Sports Construction Group has its world headquarters here. They have designed and built the gridirons for one-fourth of the NFL teams, and the diamonds of one-fifth of the Major League Baseball teams, including Yankee Stadium and Cleveland’s Progressive Field. A skilled care facility is in full operation at 8757 Brecksville Road, just north of the square and adjacent to the Western Reserve Bank building. The facility is called The Oaks of Brecksville. The center of Brecksville has a fresh new look as a result of the transformation of the Brecksville Shopping Center into Brecksville Town Center. The Giant Eagle store in the Center closed its doors but has been replaced by a “new generation” of Marc’s stores.
Although the 100-acre Veterans Administration Hospital at Miller and Brecksville Roads is now closed, City Council and the Administration have planned for this closing and it is anticipated that future revenues from redevelopment there will exceed past revenue.
Brecksville Is a Solid Business Partner The City is proud that Moody’s Investors Services has once again awarded our City a bond rating of AAA. This is the highest gradation of credit worthiness, which attests to our strong economic health and prudent fiscal management. This is the 25th consecutive year that the City of Brecksville has not raised taxes. The last time taxes were raised was to build our library, which remains one of our most prized community treasures. This is just the “foreword” to the Brecksville story. Our Economic Development Director Frank LaRose and I are waiting to personally welcome and assist you. Just call 440-526-4351. In Brecksville, the climate for business is stronger than ever.

Brecksville-Broadview Heights City Schools The Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District has earned a reputation across the state for providing a quality education. Students are beneficiaries of a learning environment that is not only challenging, but is nurturing as well. While proud of the fact that it is one of only 18 school districts in the state to receive the highest rating on the Ohio Department of Education’s Report Card for twelve consecutive years, the district continues to strive for improvement by focusing on the future and creating new goals and/or programs for students. Three years ago the district began offering one optional tuition based all-day kindergarten program for interested families. The program has grown sufficiently in popularity that each of our three elementary schools now offers an all-day kindergarten class, in addition to the traditional half-day classes.
Superintendent Scot Prebles visits with second grade students at Highland Dr. Elementary School.
Course offerings are continually reviewed at the secondary level to expand opportunities for all students. Middle students who qualify frequently take high school level classes for credit. High school students select from a broad spectrum of classes including many Advanced Placement classes and post-secondary offerings. The newest class offered at the high school is an Entrepreneurial Class that promotes independent thinking, 21st Century Skills and business acumen. Students in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District expand their horizons by participating in extra curricular opportunities ranging from serving as a member of the BEE-TV crew to mentoring special education students to performing in a play or musical. Students in the district continue to outperform their peers on college entrance exams. Typically, they score above the state and national mean on both the SAT and ACT tests. Community support is a key component of the school district. Residents volunteer their time as members of the

A Message from the CVCC Superintendent The Brecksville community has so many great opportunities for adults and students. One resource that I am most proud of is Cuyahoga Valley Career Center (CVCC). We seek more ways than ever before to bring the exceptional career and technical programs and services to the Brecksville community so all area residents can benefit from the training and education programs at CVCC. The Career Center serves a total of eight public school districts, including five in Cuyahoga County and three in Summit County, providing career-technical high school programs, adult education, career development (K-12) and community services. Using technologically advanced programs and equipment, CVCC begins career education at the kindergarten level. Annually, our students earn state and national recognition for their skills. Articulation agreements with several colleges allow students to earn college credit for many CVCC courses.
Dr. Celena Roebuck, CVCC Superintendent
As an important resource for companies, adult education is open to all northeast Ohio adults, offering affordable, customized training with new classes starting monthly. Plus, the School of Nursing at CVCC offers both full and parttime programs. here’s something about a child’s smile.
Those first teeth are the basis for beautiful grins and precious school photos. But what you might not realize is that it’s a trip to the right dentist that can set the stage for a lifetime of good oral health. “Visiting a pediatric dentist, instead of a general dentist, is as important as taking your child to a pediatrician, instead of a family practitioner,” explains Dr. Arlene Coloma, D.D.S, M.S. “Pediatric dentists receive an additional two to three years of specialized training centered around the growth and development of children.” Dr. Arlene has been the pediatric dentist of choice in this area for more than eight year. She’s the dentist other health practitioners bring their own children to. And when a new orthodontist comes to town, he or she pays a visit to Dr. Arlene-first. “We’ve established an outstanding reputation in the community over the years as the kind of practice that is absolutely focused on children. Parents know they can expect a more successful outcome because we speak directly to the kids.” In fact, your child’s first visit to Dr. Arlene - recommended at age one - typically includes time spent with the doctor in the comfort of one of her brightly decorated patient rooms, with themes like the deep blue ocean and a festive outdoor park. “We usually let the child dictate the way their first exam will go,” she smiles warmly. “It’s important to make that visit as positive as possible. We let them sit in the chair and look at all of the tools. They get to meet the tooth tickler and we talk to them on their level.” She manages to sneak an exam in, too.
or her first visit. There are so many kids walking around with cavities that could have been prevented if they’d been seen earlier.” She’s also more conservative when it comes to Fluoride treatments, preferring to dispense only if needed.
“I never want the first visit to be traumatic,” Dr. Arlene emphasizes. “And it’s important for parents to realize that three is no longer the age to bring a child in for his
“These aren’t just little teeth, they’re little people,” she says. “I’m passionate about helping them keep a healthy smile for life.”

Alla Ioffe, RN, Director of Nursing The Oaks of Brecksville Rehabilitation & Nursing Facility

lla Ioffe had many ideas when initially accepting the position for the Director of Nursing at The Oaks of Brecksville. Having been a registered nurse for over 30 years and working with Saber Healthcare for over 10 years, Alla wanted to make The Oaks as spectacular on the inside as the new building was on the outside. As The Oaks began to fill up with residents in September of 2011, Alla continued to keep her focus on resident-centered care and to make sure that a homelike environment was present at all times. “We serve two very distinct customer groups; one that stays with us short term for rehab and one that lives with us long term, “ says Alla. “We provide thoughtful, quality care and our rehab outcomes are impressive! I believe that comes back specifically to culture change. We have a professional team— from our hands-on caregivers, to our housekeepers and dietary staff—that know our residents well.”

Human Services & Recreation
Community Guide
Brecksville’s Award-Winning Human Services Center The Brecksville Human Services Center, located next to the Community Center, is a cheerful and welcoming retreat famous for its hospitality for seniors and individuals in need of special assistance. People come for the elegant surroundings and stay for the food. On Tuesdays from 9:00 to 10:30 there is a fabulous brunch for residents of all ages. During warm weather, many people enjoy their food in the beautiful courtyard, complete with a fountain and tables with umbrellas. The Thursday mid-day luncheon is one of the most popular events at the Center. For just $5, senior residents enjoy a fullcourse meal served on china. When lunch is finished, its movie time! A newly released DVD movie is shown each week. Exercise classes are held in the warm water therapy pool. When the pool isn’t used for scheduled programs, open sessions mean that anyone can take a much-needed dip. The soothing water is truly inviting.
One of the most notable offerings at the Human Services Center is the transportation program for which the City of Brecksville was awarded a “Best of Service” award by the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging. Volunteer drivers staff cars, a minivan and a brand new 14-passenger bus that takes residents ages 60 and over to doctor appointments, restaurants and malls. Brecksville Community Center The service is available to wheelchair-use residents of any age as well. Cards and games of all sorts happen every day. The Human continued on page 16 >>

Human Services & Recreation >>continued from previous page
Brecksville Recreation Opportunities Brecksville’s residents have a wealth of recreational opportunities available to them. Brecksville’s recreation facilities include a state-of-the-art Community and Human Services Center, which showcases outstanding recreational, educational, athletic and wellness opportunities for every member of the community. The large indoor and outdoor pools and Kids Quarters play areas are just a few of the numerous amenities for families to enjoy. Along with the Community Center, the Blossom Hill property houses a state-ofthe-art soccer and lacrosse field plus numerous other baseball and soccer fields. And there are also three baseball fields and tennis courts behind City Hall. The City’s master plan for Blossom calls for the addition of more soccer and baseball fields, tennis courts, a water park, a field house and walking trails in the coming years. Let’s not forget the Cleveland Metroparks’ Brecksville Reservation that runs through the southern portion of the City. There is no better way to spend time outdoors than in this beautiful park. Biking, hiking, and having a picnic are just some of the ways to enjoy the Metroparks. Brecksville is also fortunate to have the only national park in Ohio, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in our own “backyard”. With a diverse array of activities such as concerts, individual and ranger-guided hikes and programs, biking the towpath and riding the scenic railroad, Brecksville has it all when it comes to parks & recreation!
Services Center features Bridge for all levels of players, including a session in the evening. There’s also Canasta and Pinochle and a host of other games including Dominoes, Texas Hold ‘Em poker and Mah Jongg. Upstairs, arm chair yoga, arm chair exercise and free Tai Chi classes are held for older adults several times each week at no charge. Senior residents who need extra care can benefit from the reassurance calls made by volunteer staffers seven days a week. When someone is home alone, a friendly, caring voice can be a bright spot in the day. In fact, the program has been credited with saving an elderly person’s life when he failed to answer a call. Of course, the Human Services Department is available to any resident in need. The Brecksville Pantry provides food once a month to anyone who financially qualifies. And the Center is the headquarters for the local Meals on Wheels program.
Outdoor Pool at the Community Center
We hope to see you at the Human Services Center! Friendly staff will always make you feel welcome.
The Human Services schedule of events changes every two months. Copies are available at the Human Services Center which is located at 2 Community Drive. Call 440-526-2499 for more information on any of the services available to seniors in Brecksville.

Homes & Real Estate
The Advantages of Working with a Professional Interior Designer James and Eileen Smalley, Owners, New Creation Interiors www.NewCreationInteriors.net Building or renovating a home can be one of the most stressful endeavors a consumer takes on. Luckily, you don’t have to do it alone! A trained Interior Designer can help you organize and finalize all the details from the tedious; “Where should my outlets go?” to the daunting; “What paint colors should I select?” Designers can assist you with every aspect of the project from the blueprints to your furniture selections. They can help turn your “Vision” into a reality and make sure all of your choices coordinate together, creating a cohesive flow between each room. An Interior Designer will work to make a room functional for your needs. Working with a qualified Designer is cost effective; saving time and money by making the correct selections the first
time! It provides you with peace of mind by removing the dread of making numerous decisions on your own. Selling a home can be a very difficult and tense experience for any homeowner. With the help of a Designer, this process can be less painful and more successful. An Interior Designer can help determine what a home needs to make it appear more spacious, inviting and less cluttered by removing, reusing and re-purposing items
