Live, Work and Thrive in the Twinsburg is a city that respects its rich history, celebrates its progress and welcomes residents and businesses. We strive to honor local traditions, expand community services and celebrate our diversity. Residents take pride in Twinsburg’s excellent school system, nationally-recognized library and outstanding park system. Every August, the Twins Day Festival places the City on the international stage and reminds us of Aaron and Moses Wilcox for whom the City was named. This festival is where our past and present come together as the City greets multiples from around the world. The City administration is committed to relationship building for the betterment of the community. Long-term relationships have been cultivated with Kent State University, Metroparks Serving

City of Twinsburg Summit County, and with local businesses and institutions. After more than a decade of leasing space in the “Old School”, Kent State completed construction of a 43,000 sq. ft. educational facility. The Kent State Academic Center provides cost-effective educational opportunities to area residents and businesses. The City’s partnership with Metroparks Serving Summit County began with a joint agreement for the management of the 900 acres in Liberty Park. The recently completed Ledges Trail has provided visitors an opportunity to enjoy sandstone ledges, a cave, and wetlands. Metroparks plans on constructing an interpretive center at this same location. Jointly, the City and Metroparks have assembled more than 2,000 contiguous acres of open space. Twinsburg is “open for business.” We are proud of our existing diverse business base. There are over 450 businesses located in Twinsburg including a number of major corporations such as Rockwell International, GE Energy, Hitachi Medical Systems USA, Pepsi America, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Goodrich and Assura Med. The Twinsburg Cornerstone Business Park provides 167 acres of highly-visible, rail-served, highway-connected property, and is ready for new and expanding businesses. What was once the cornerstone of the City’s early development is becoming the cornerstone for new economic development. The health care services and products industry is becoming a significant part of the City’s economy. The Cleveland Clinic Twinsburg Family Health and Surgery Center is a 190,000 sq. ft. facility serving the region with first-class health care and a 24-hour emergency room. Nationally-recognized University Hospital Health System provides outstanding emergency room, urgent care and medical services to area residents at their satellite campus on Commons Boulevard. These institutions fit well with many existing related businesses including Kaiser Permanente Health Plan, Quest Diagnostics, WebMD, Assura Med, Rx Options, Hitachi Medical Systems USA, Emdeon, Cover My Meds, and others. Twinsburg’s Parks and Recreation Department actively engages residents in the community. There are youth theater productions, a Rock-the-Park Concert series, Farmer’s Market, Twinsburg Duathlon and many more activities for residents of all ages. The Senior Center and staff provide daily activities such as crafts,

billiards and socializing and many special events such as bus tours, theater trips and dinners. Twinsburg is also one of the few cities that own a golf course. The 18-hole, 6,500-yard Gleneagles Golf Course has been listed on Golf Digest’s “Places to Play” list. From play, to lessons to merchandise, Gleneagles is the place to be!

Twinsburg Township: Poised for Continued Success By Robert S. Kagler, AICP, Associate AIA, Township Manager

On behalf of the Board of Twinsburg Township Trustees,

welcome to Twinsburg, and I hope you enjoy the 2013 Twinsburg Area Magazine and Community Guide.

Twinsburg is a wonderful and exciting community, and Twinsburg Township is the only local government that has been part of Twinsburg from the very beginning. The township form of government has been around for nearly 400 years and provides residents and businesses with unlimited access to elected leaders at the grass-roots level. Townships operate on the principle that simpler is better, and township government is deeply rooted in cooperation. Twinsburg Township practiced “regionalism” long before it became a popular term and does more in terms of regional cooperation than any surrounding community. The Township has >> continued on page 8

Five Things Your Accountant Would Like You to Know 1. “Not Everyone Knows What They Are Doing.” Be careful when choosing a CPA. Some studies show that as many as HALF of all tax preparers aren’t certified public accountants. Some are nothing at all, they just showed up, watched a couple videos, and got hired. So, when it comes to your taxes, and your business, do your research. 2. “Get Your Stuff Together.” Yes, it is their job to do your taxes. It is not their job to be your maid. Don’t show up with a box of receipts. At least attempt to have some form of organization. 3. “Tax Extensions Are Not a Big Deal.” Don’t freak out if you are not going to be ready by April 15. And don’t try to squeeze in at the last second. If you need more time with your taxes, let your CPA know so they can file an extension for you. 4. “Get Documentation of Everything You Do.” If you make donations to Goodwill, have them give you a receipt. When you travel on business, keep your receipts. Trying to remember what you did six months ago benefits nobody and can cause you less deductions. 5. “Come To Me NOT Just At Tax Time.” Your accountant should know what is going on in your business at all times, not just at tax time. For all your accounting and tax needs, contact the professionals at Angle, Zaebst & Associates at 330-425-4422. 8

The Village of Reminderville A Great Place to Call Home The Village of Reminderville is a quiet little community nestled in the northeast corner of Summit County. The story of the Village is of close-knit families and growth. From a true grass roots beginning of 55 families raising money with potluck dinners for their volunteer fire department equipment... to today’s thriving community that boasts two top-rated school systems and police and fire departments second to none. Reminderville is the perfect mix of country-quiet and city-close; from the 341-acre lake community to the many impressive new developments that have sprouted up in the last ten plus years. Over 3,500 residents currently call Reminderville their home. Community pride can be seen and felt in the various events put on throughout the year including the Easter Egg Hunt, the 4th of July Parade, Kids Halloween Party, and the year-ending event, the unique Santa’s Delivery! The Arts Council puts on spectacular art shows and photo contests for all ages at the Municipal Center each year as well.

Standards will ensure that teachers teach and students learn the knowledge and skills to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow including communication skills, perseverance in problem solving, technical reading and writing, literacy across disciplines and the most important mathematical skills. In addition to classroom studies, students are encouraged to participate in community service, co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Through these types of activities, students learn specific skills while also developing responsibility and sportsmanship. Individual students as well as student groups have received state and national recognition in the areas of fine arts, band, orchestra, the RBC Singers and the Great Expectations Show Chair. A Message from CVCC Superintendent, Dr. Celena Roebuck The Twinsburg community has so many great opportunities for adults and students. One resource that I am most proud of is Cuyahoga Valley Career Center (CVCC). We seek more ways than ever before to bring exceptional career and technical programs and services to the Twinsburg community so all Twinsburg residents can benefit from the training and education programs at CVCC. With Twinsburg, CVCC serves a total of eight public school districts, including five in Cuyahoga County and three in Summit County, providing careertechnical high school programs, adult education, career development (K-12) and community services. Using technologically advanced programs and equipment, CVCC begins career education at the kindergarten level. Annually, our students earn state and national recognition for their skills. Articulation agreements with several colleges allow students to earn college credit for many CVCC courses.

Dr. Celena Roebuck CVCC Superintendent

As an important resource for companies, adult education is open to all northeast Ohio adults, offering affordable, customized training with new classes starting monthly. Plus, the School of Nursing at CVCC offers both full and parttime programs. I would personally like to invite you to visit our school for a preview of our programs and services that will interest you. Please personally contact me at 440-838-8920 or croebuck@cvccworks.com for a visit to our school. I look forward to meeting you. www.t wi n sb u r g co m m unityguide.com

With over 36,000 assisted living facilities in the United States, it takes a little homework to find the facility that can best meet their needs and interests. Location should be the first consideration. Determine whether the senior’s needs could best be served by an assisted living facility close to home, where they may have many companions and participate in many activities or an assisted living facility closer to family located in another area. Based on the facility’s services, amenities and pricing information call the top three facilities and schedule an appointment to see each community. Touring a community is the most important step in selecting an assisted living facility. While touring, take note of the cleanliness of the building. Is the building attractive and homelike? Do the current residents look happy and well cared for? Do the staff members look happy or hurried and stressed? While visiting ask specifically about monthly fees and cost for additional services such as bathing and medication administration. Also ask about meals, housekeeping and laundry services, transportation and recreational programming. After touring all of the facilities, determine the two that you feel would best meet the seniors needs and they would like best. Take the senior to these two facilities. Get their opinion and then go with your gut feeling, it’s usually right.

Great Skin for Life By Dr. Monique Cohn, Advanced Dermatology www.YourGreatSkin.com

There was a time when all women did to preserve their skin

was put on a little cold cream at night. Now, the bathroom is full of various department store products that all have their own separate claims, including “anti-aging”. No product can stop you from getting older, so what does “anti-aging” mean? What Is Aging? Aging of skin takes place as a result of the following:

• Sun Exposure • Volume & Collagen Loss

• Alcohol & Smoking • Lack of Proper Nutrition

What Can You Do? The most important thing to slow down the signs of aging is to moisturize your skin with a high quality product. You don’t need to spend a fortune, but you do need to use a product that has the right nutrients and will protect your skin from the sun and other environmental factors. Some of the newest ingredients to look for when shopping for facial products include antioxidants that attack and disable free radicals that destroy our collagen supply. These include green tea,

vitamins C and E, kinetin, alpha-lipoic acid, idebenone, coffee berry, peptides and tripeptides. Although topicals are great for long-term maintenance and can help diminish the effects of the aging process, in-office procedures are probably still the quickest way to get more dramatic results. Today, patients can purchase an immediate result with minimal downtime for about $600 or less. Fillers based in hyaluronic acid and immobilizers with botulinum toxin (like BOTOX or Dysport) can be used to safely erase deeper lines and restore a youthful look. Chemical peels, dermabrasion, laser treatments and other procedures effectively improve overall skin tone, texture and color. It’s best to see a board-certified dermatologist who can evaluate your skin and discuss options. So, forget the department store hype and get the professional information you need to be successful in stifling those nasty signs of aging!

Homes & Real Estate

Twinsburg - A Welcoming Community Homes are selling in Twinsburg! According to the latest

Trendgraphix report, there is less than 6 months of inventory available in Twinsburg meaning that it would take 6 months to sell all the single family homes currently on the market. This number would normally represent a balanced market. However, it is a buyer’s market nationally. Move in condition homes continue to sell the fastest for the highest price with some homes selling in 3 days to 3 weeks! When I am working with buyers relocating to the area they are often deciding between homes in the surrounding communities so I thought I would survey past clients, friends, affiliates and colleagues as to what they like (or liked) about living in Twinsburg. Here are some of the responses I received. “Great neighbors, great shopping, easy access to freeways and highways, excellent school system and a great place for senior citizens to live and retire.” - Terry & Deb

“Twinsburg provides a variety of homes at affordable prices including new construction and neighborhoods built within the last 20 years. The City offers many amenities that make living in a suburb convenient. We enjoy the public swimming pool, fitness center and amphitheater to name a few. The city provides many services such as trash removal and plowing that are always carried out in a professional and punctual manner. The schools are a huge part of our children’s future and Twinsburg city schools are consistently rated excellent with distinction. Twinsburg is where our families have chosen to live and we just bought our first home here!” - Rocco and Kara “I am happy we bought our home in Twinsburg... I have many lifelong friendships from here!” -Chris “My children were in kindergarten and first grade when we moved here. They have since graduated, finished college and are working out of state. Twinsburg was a great place to raise my children and now I continue to enjoy rollerblading, running and golfing in Twinsburg. It is an easy place to live, with friendly people and great amenities.” I would be happy to e-mail you a copy of The Benefits of Home Ownership Guide from the National Association of Realtors and/or provide you with the latest market information. Refinancing? You might be interested to know... Frequently I am asked how the mortgage business

is doing while the person’s head is slightly tilting to the side. Listen; don’t fall into the media scare about the housing industry. Mortgage bankers predict that the volume of next year’s home-purchase financing will be the highest it has been in four years. The rate of serious delinquency on residential mortgages and home-equity products has declined to the lowest level in seven months. So my answer is this, “It’s great, I’m doing record closings each month!” Here are some things you should know about REFINANCING: you may be eligible to refinance, even if you’re “underwater” or have tried unsuccessfully to refinance before. HARP Eligibility: you must be current on your mortgage payments, with no 30-day late payments in the last six months and no more than one in the

past 12 months. You should consult a loan officer if the current rate is 1% lower than what your rate is right now. PURCHASING A HOME? The rate is only one important factor in a mortgage. You want to make sure you are doing business with a reliable, reputable business/loan officer. You also want to look at the whole product including down payment & closing costs. For more Information on Mortgage products, stop by or call Karen and David Voytek of Crosscountry Mortgage at 216-536-8186.

Grandparents Caring for Grandchildren without the Custody Battle: Ohio’s Caretaker Power of Attorney U.S. census figures indicate that some 6.7 million children in the United States are being raised by grandparents and other relatives. That’s roughly one in 12 children, about 10 times the number of children in the U.S. foster care system. Often, grandparents are raising their grandchildren without having any legal custody, making it difficult for them to access services of any kind. Grand families, a term referring to situations where children are being raised by grandparents or other relatives, exist for many reasons, often because the parent(s) face a temporary crisis, such as a serious illness, financial problem, or lack of housing. In 2004, the Ohio Legislature addressed this problem by creating the caretaker power of attorney through which parents consent to the grandparent having parental rights and responsibilities for the children on a temporary basis. This parental consent to the grandparent(s) care allows the children to have access to educational and medical services which, in the past, might have been denied

absent an order granting the grandparent legal custody, an expensive and emotional proposition. By providing legal documentation to the grandparent caregiver who has consent of parents, the power of attorney eliminates expensive legal custody battles and/or children services intervention. The Ohio statute governing caretaker powers of attorney prescribes the form and content that must be used as well as specific notices that must be given. In most situations, the power of attorney must be signed by both parents. It must be filed with the juvenile court where the grandparent resides within 5 days of its creation. The Ohio Legislature’s creation of the grandparent caretaker power of attorney provides a cost effective way for grandparents to care for grandchildren in situations where parents are temporarily unable to do so and consent to the arrangement.
