2020 YEARBOOK THE OFFICI A L PUBLICATION OF THE BOONE A ND CROCK ETT CLUB

Special Edition n May 2021

Back in the day, to learn a new skill or trade you would apprentice to a master craftsman for a period of onthe-job training, typically at low wages. Now, apprentice is often used in a broader context to simply mean a beginner or novice. You could argue that most of us were apprentice hunters at one time, learning hunting skills and responsibilities “on the job” from one season to the next from a parent, relative, or family friend. Many of us went from our Red Ryders to .22s to centerfire rifles under the instruction and watchful eye of our mentors. We came to understand that safety always comes first and to never take a shot until we had fully and clearly identified our target and knew we had a safe background. We also learned about the nature and habits of the game we hunted, and which hunting strategies might work best. Often through stories and

example, we gained an awareness of what it meant to be an ethical hunter, to be your own referee and that fair chase always came first. This past year saw a large influx of young adults into our hunting ranks, men and women who did not typically grow up in hunting families. Sure, there are lots of things we can learn online these days, but the tenets of good sportsmanship and the meaning of fair chase are still best handled with a one-on-one conversation. In the months ahead, I hope you’ll make it a point to reach out to one of these new hunters. You might find him or her at the shooting range, a conservation dinner event, at work or at a neighborhood barbeque. In a fast-changing world, helping as many of these apprentices as we can become the craftsmen of the future is another kind of record we all want to achieve. Doug Painter Editor-In-Chief

BUSHNELL’S 70-YEAR DRIVE TO DELIVER PURPOSE-BUILT OPTICS ®

Hunters and shooters are notorious

gear junkies, and when the gear conversation turns to optics, it’s impossible not to talk about Bushnell. After all, it’s hard to argue with a 70-year history of success, a history that’s made Bushnell a household name among sportsmen and women in deer shacks and duck clubs across the United States.

Founder, David P. Bushnell 26 FA I R CH A S E | 2 02 0 Y E A R BO O K

Bushnell was founded by American entrepreneur David P. Bushnell, a relative of another David Bushnell who built the first submarine to be used in combat in 1776. In 1948, Bushnell started a small mail-order business selling binoculars, a business that would eventually blossom into an optics juggernaut. David Bushnell’s vision was to put affordable, high-quality binoculars into the hands of middle-class Americans. Since then, the company has carried on that mission, equipping more and more people with purpose-built optics in an effort to make a great outdoor experience available to everyone. One of Bushnell’s main strengths over the years has been its wide variety of options for any type of user. From straightforward and reliable models for the entry-level hunter, all the way up to professional-grade optics for the most demanding users (such as their Elite Tactical line of rifle scopes), Bushnell has developed products at multiple price points without skimping on key features or dependability. Instead of just going deep in a single category, Bushnell has also gained a

reputation for its breadth of offerings. The company covers a lot of territory with more categories than any other optics manufacturer. In addition to your staples like binoculars and rifle scopes, Bushnell delivers rangefinders, red dots, spotting scopes, trail cameras and more. Beyond hunting and shooting, Bushnell has grown into other outdoor recreation markets, enhancing the outdoor experience for a greater number of people. In the golf world, Bushnell rangefinders have become the dominant range-finding tool in most golfers’ bags. From fans up in stadiums’ nosebleed sections to stargazers and bird watchers, Bushnell has been creating optics that get more folks enjoying the outdoors, no matter what their passion might be. Headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas, Bushnell is rooted in the Midwest, and its employees share a strong connection to the outdoors. The avid outdoorsmen and women on Bushnell’s research and development team draw on their own experiences in the field as they focus on finding better solutions to real-world optics challenges that hunters

and shooters face on a day-today basis. This has led to continuous technology improvements and, ultimately, award-winning optics. Over the years, Bushnell has been behind a lot of innovations that have made hunters more effective in the field. Bushnell’s proprietary EXO barrier is a molecularly bonded protective coating on their glass, shielding users’ optics from water, oil, dust, debris and scratches. Bushnell’s Angle Range Compensation (ARC) is a feature built into their laser rangefinders that accounts for terrain angle, giving you true distance to target on uphill and downhill shots. ARC technology, along with other Bushnell developments like scan mode and near/far mode, have made hunters’ experience with laser rangefinders more intuitive and effective. The laser rangefinder itself is perhaps Bushnell’s greatest innovation. In 1996, the company brought the first affordable, handheld laser rangefinder to the market, the Yardage Pro 400. At first, this may have looked like just another handy hunting tool, but few predicted the ways in which this invention would

reinvent hunting. Although laser rangefinder technology had been utilized by NASA and the military for decades, it wasn’t until Bushnell made it affordable and handheld that hunters could truly start maximizing its potential in the field. Before the laser rangefinder, hunters often relied on pacing out distances in the field, or worse, just guessing. Being able to measure distances instantly and accurately from a blind, tree stand or glassing knob put a greater level of accuracy and confidence into the hands of bowhunters and rifle hunters alike. A proficient shooter or archer now had fewer unknown variables, and this resulted in fewer bad shots, greater kill efficacy and more ethical hunting. This year, Bushnell is celebrating the 25year anniversary of their first laser rangefinder, an innovation that has now become an essential tool in almost every hunter’s pack. Throughout it all, Bushnell has also been a critical ally for conservation and Fair Chase hunting. The company understood early on that, beyond their own missions to deliver great

products and experiences to outdoorsmen and women, companies like Bushnell have a greater mission to ensure our wildlife and wild places are protected and can be enjoyed by future generations. A longtime Boone and Crockett Club “Trailblazer in Conservation” partner, Bushnell has been a strong advocate of ethical, selective hunting and scientific-based wildlife management as tools for conservation. Bushnell is a proud supporter of Boone and Crockett Club’s 2020 Fair Chase Yearbook, which celebrates these critical tenants of Fair Chase hunting. Bushnell has partnered with a long list of dedicated conservation organizations over the years, including the Boone and Crockett Club, National Wild Turkey Foundation, Mule Deer Foundation, Pheasants Forever, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. Bushnell has also been a longtime sponsor of the International Hunter Education Association USA, supporting its mission to educate new generations of hunters. Locally, Bushnell has been a sponsor of the Kansas Department of Wildlife’s

Active Sportsmen of Kansas program, which equips disabled hunters and anglers with all-terrain track chairs so they can get further afield. In California, Bushnell has hosted hundreds of young hunters during the “Sharing the Tradition” junior antlerless deer hunt at the 270,000acre Tejon Ranch. In Fort Benning, Georgia, Bushnell has helped host the Gold Star youth hunt, which gives kids who have lost a parent during active military duty an opportunity to hunt deer and hogs, often for the first time. From coast to coast, Bushnell’s efforts continually point back to R3, the outdoor community’s mission to recruit, retain, and reactivate hunters and anglers. By partnering with conservation organizations that share their passion for welcoming new hunters into the outdoors, and by developing high-quality, dependable optics at entry-level price points, Bushnell is dedicated to continuing a rich hunting heritage that goes back decades. As the hunting world continues to grow and evolve to meet tomorrow’s conservation challenges, one thing’s for certain: Bushnell will be there. n FAIR CHASE | 2 02 0 Y E ARB OOK 27
