How To Protect Nature When Enjoying The Outdoors Few getaways can reinvigorate the mind & body like a day spent in the great outdoors. The rewards of a day spent outside aren’t just figments of the imagination. The online medical resource WebMD notes that exposure to the great outdoors can improve sleep cycles, boost self-esteem, reduce anxiety, help people focus, & bolster the immune system, among other benefits.
Our goal is to maximize quality of life, so you can enjoy time with those who mean the most to you.
The relationship between people & nature is not a one-way street. Just as nature takes care of people, people must do their part to protect nature. Whether nature lovers are hiking, relaxing by the river or engaging in another outdoor activity, the following tips can help people protect the serene settings & landscapes they love so much. • Leave nothing behind. Anti-littering campaigns have been prevalent for decades. Despite that, litter remains a significant problem. A 2020 study from Keep America Beautiful, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing litter, found that there are nearly 50 billion pieces of litter along roadways & waterways across the U.S. Each piece of litter that finds its way into nature can be prevented. When spending time in nature, individuals can commit to brining out whatever they bring in. Leaving nothing behind reduces the issues associated with litter, including the negative effects it has on wildlife & marine life, & helps maintain natural settings like forests & beaches. • Reduce reliance on plastics & recycle the plastics you do use. Plastics adversely affect the health of the planet in various ways. But a staggering percentage of the plastics humans use are never recycled. A study published in the journal Science Advances found that, of the 8.3 billion metric tons of plastics that have been produced since 1950, only around 9% has been recycled. Plastics take roughly 400 years to degrade, so much of the plastics that have not been recycled are ending up in the world’s oceans. In fact, projections from environmentalists suggest that oceans will contain more plastics than fish by the middle of this century. By reducing reliance on plastics & recycling the plastics they do use, nature lovers can do their part to combat this significant threat & protect the natural settings they enjoy so much. • Plant trees. Planting trees could help combat the issue of rising carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. According to Greenpop, an organization devoted to urban greening & forest restoration projects, trees absorb CO2, removing it from the air & storing it as they release oxygen. A day outdoors planting trees is a fun activity for people of all ages, & it’s also a highly effective way to help the planet.

Tips To Manage Your Cholesterol Cholesterol is a complex topic that can be difficult to understand. Cholesterol is present in the body & it also can be found in food. That can make it hard for people to understand why cholesterol is often seen in such a negative light. Any confusion surrounding cholesterol can serve as the perfect springboard to learn more about it. What is cholesterol? A waxy, chemical compound, cholesterol often gets a bad rap. However, the American Heart Association says it is actually needed to build cells. The liver makes all the cholesterol a person needs. Additional cholesterol comes from diet. There are two types of cholesterol carried through the blood. Lowdensity liproprotein (LDL) transports cholesterol particles throughout the body. This is considered “bad” cholesterol because it can build up in the walls of the arteries. High-density liproprotein (HDL) picks up excess cholesterol & takes it back to the liver, which is why it is considered “good” cholesterol.

In measuring cholesterol, a total cholesterol level of less than 200 mg/dL is desirable. High HDL numbers are best, & any amount less than 40 mg/dL is a red flag. In regard to LDL, less than 100 mg/dL is optimal. Why is cholesterol sometimes concerning? When present in the right amounts, cholesterol is instrumental in building healthy cells. When there is too much bad cholesterol in the blood, that can pose a problem. That’s because it can increase risk for heart disease, warns the Mayo Clinic. In high amounts, LDL cholesterol can deposit fatty residue in the blood vessels. These deposits will grow over time & harden, blocking off the flow of blood through the arteries & making vessels less flexible, a condition known as atherosclerosis. Sometimes cholesterol deposits break off suddenly from the walls of blood vessels & then form a clot that can lead to a heart attack or stroke. In addition to cholesterol, doctors will measure triglycerides during lipid profiles. The Mayo Clinic says triglycerides are a type of fat in the blood. Having high triglyceride levels also can increase risk for heart disease.

Managing cholesterol levels - High cholesterol is one of the major risk factors for coronary heart disease, though it is controllable. By making some changes & being cognizant of cholesterol numbers, individuals can improve their overall health significantly. It is important that individuals know the baseline numbers in their lipid profile, including HDL, LDL & triglyceride levels. Doctors may differ in their interpretations of how cholesterol levels factor into the bigger picture of a person’s lifestyle & overall health. But people can still do their best to keep bad cholesterol levels down.

• Make changes to a diet to reduce consumption of foods high in saturated fats, trans fats & animal proteins. • Reduce weight to have a body mass index lower than 30. • Increase exercise, which will help boost HDL naturally. • Quit smoking, which can lower levels of HDL. • Consume alcohol in moderation. Alcohol tends to increase total cholesterol levels. Individuals are urged to speak to their doctors if they have concerns about cholesterol.

The Effects Of Infrequent Driving On Your Car • Pre-Burial Arrangements • Cremation Burials • Columbarium Niches
• Memorial Markers • Affordable Prices • Park-like Setting
Driving puts a certain measure of wear & tear on a vehicle. On the opposite end of the spectrum, individuals may not realize that failing to drive their vehicles regularly also can affect performance. Here’s a closer look at what can happen when vehicles sit idle for lengthy periods of time. • Battery loses its charge. The battery in a vehicle is still being used even if the car isn’t running. Batteries power various components in a car, such as the vehicle computer, phone chargers & more. If the engine does not turn over & help to recharge the battery, the battery will eventually die. People who drive infrequently may want to consider a trickle charger that’s plugged in during periods of non-use. • Tire rot can set in. Dry tire rot is deterioration that sets into the rubber. The material dries out & becomes brittle, causing splits & cracks to form. Driving with tire rot can cause tires to deflate. • Rust & corrosion can occur. There is still plenty of metal in modern vehicles. A vehicle that has been exposed to salt or rain or one that is stored in a moist climate can be susceptible to undercarriage or engine rust. This may cause damage that’s not easily repaired. • Damage from sap or droppings. Parking in one location for a long time could be a target for bird droppings, fallen berries, sap, & other substances potentially harmful to paint. Leaving the vehicle out in the sun also means UV rays can cause the clear coat to oxidize & begin to fail, which can produce blotchy or peeling spots. • Poor brake performance. When vehicles are left to sit, corrosion could build up on the rotors & the brake pads may become less flexible. Moisture also may seep into brake lines, causing issues with pressurization of brake fluid. Each of these factors adds up to brakes that do not work properly - which is a big safety hazard. • Formation of tire flat spots. When tires are not used frequently, the weight of the car can continually put pressure on the same parts of the tires, leading to flat spots. Tires also can lose pressure if they sit too long. • Oil & other fluids may lose efficacy. Fluids can go stale in a vehicle if it isn’t regularly driven. Gasoline also may develop condensation, which can reduce efficiency & performance. Taking short trips helps avoid this issue. Infrequent driving can cause damage to a car or truck. But many potential issues can be avoided by driving vehicles more often. For all your vehicle service needs contact R.J. Daniels at 815-544-2118.

Participate In National Voter Registration Day Democracy is most effective when all eligible voters cast their votes. Whether voters vote in person or submit absentee or mail-in ballots, the importance of voting cannot be understated. In recognition of the importance of voting, each year the U.S. celebrates National Voter Registration Day on the fourth Tuesday in September. What is National Voter Registration Day? National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday to get Americans registered to vote & educate them about how to vote on or around Election Day. One & a half million people registered to vote on National Voter Registration Day in 2020. Why is it important? Organizers note that as many as 25% of all eligible voters in the U.S. are not registered to vote. Voters who miss the deadlines to register, which vary from state to state, are ineligible to vote, though some states allow voters to register in person on Election Day & still vote. Voter registration is not closed in any state on or before National Voter Registration Day, so participants can rest easy knowing that they can successfully register on this day. A list of state-by-state voter registration deadlines can be found at Vote.org. Is National Voter Registration Day a partisan event? Participants should avoid using National Voter Registration Day to advocate on behalf of a particular candidate, party or ballot measure. It is intended to provide nonpartisan education to voters about voter registration, including where & how to register as well as vote. Organizers want the day to remain positive & urge participants to avoid asking people who they plan to vote for or who they voted for in the past. In addition, participants should not wear shirts, buttons or stickers that support a particular candidate or party or convey a political message. Organizers also urge people to avoid getting pulled into political debates with people they are registering or bystanders. More information can be found at nationalvoterregistrationday.org. Stop by Ida Public Library on Tuesday, September 20th and register to vote starting at 10 AM. They have stickers & pens and can offer bilingual assistance. The library is located at 320 N. State St., Belvidere.

Thyroid Cancer Causes & Symptoms Thyroid cancer is a relatively uncommon form of the disease, especially when compared to more prevalent types. In fact, approx. 44,000 people will be diagnosed with thyroid cancer in the U.S. this year, compared to more than 280,000 with breast cancer & 150,000 with colon cancer. The thyroid is a gland located in the base of the front of the neck & is produces hormones that regulate a number of functions - blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, & weight. It also affects how individuals consume oxygen. What is thyroid cancer? Like other cancers, thyroid cancer develops when cells mutate & begin multiplying rapidly. When enough of these abnormal cells accumulate, they form a tumor, says WebMD. Are there different types of thyroid cancer? There are several types of thyroid cancer, including: • Papillary thyroid cancer: Accounts for up to 80% of all thyroid cancer cases. It grows slowly but may spread to the lymph nodes in the neck. • Follicular thyroid cancer: A rare type of thyroid cancer that primarily affects people over the age of 50. If this type of thyroid cancer is aggressive, it may spread to the lungs & bones. • Medullary thyroid cancer: This begins in thyroid cells called C cells, which produce the hormone calcitonin. Calcitonin regulates calcium in the blood, according to the Mayo Clinic. • Anaplastic thyroid cancer: This grows quickly & can be difficult to treat. It tends to occur in people older than 60 & may cause severe symptoms, like neck swelling & difficulty breathing & swallowing. Symptoms of thyroid cancer - Thyroid cancer often presents as a lump in the thyroid & does not cause any other symptoms, which can make it challenging to diagnose. Nodules often are detected during imaging tests being used to test for other illnesses. If lumps are large enough, they may show when looking in a mirror or may cause pain or trouble with swallowing & breathing. A doctor may recommend an ultrasound & physical exam if thyroid cancer is suspected. A fine needle aspiration biopsy also may be ordered. Who gets thyroid cancer? Adults & children with an inherited gene that causes increased risk for medullary thyroid cancer should be cautious. Some high risk people consider having a thyroidectomy (thyroid removal) as a prophylactic way to prevent thyroid cancer. Women are more likely to get thyroid cancer than men, & Whites are more likely than Blacks to develop it. Individuals who work around radiation also are at an elevated risk. Thyroid cancer treatment - Approved medications for treating thyroid cancer are available. Radioactive iodine may be used to treat cancers that have metastasized outside the neck area. Surgery to remove a portion or the entire thyroid can sometimes cure the cancer altogether.
