Project goal This collective research project aims to develop a better understanding of the thermal requirements, the availability of on-board energy resources, the existing energy technologies and their interactions to design and to manage thermal systems in electric and hybrid vehicles to lower the energy consumption. Project motivation European regulations enforce the reduction of CO2-emissions of vehicles. In response to this need for radically reduced vehicle fleet CO2 emissions, there is a clear trend towards smaller vehicles and downsized engines. The growing demand for lower consumption and emissions in the coming years will lead to further enhancements in internal combustion engine design. Another development to comply with future CO2-limits is the electrification of the drivetrain. For smaller vehicles, this will result in battery electric vehicles, whereas for larger vehicles this will predominantly result in hybrid vehicles. This electrification not only applies to cars but also to other kinds of vehicles. In hybrid vehicles, the powertrain, containing an internal combustion engine and an electric motor, emits less waste heat compared to conventional diesel or gasoline drivetrains. Accordingly, the heat flows in the coolant will have to be better controlled by thermal management and the energy available in the exhaust gas must be used as an additional power source to fulfill the heat requirements. Additionally, the internal combustion engine is not always activated, depending on an optimized strategy in dealing with vehicle heat and energy requirements. For electric vehicles, the main energy source is the battery. The energy drained from the battery to run cooling and heating systems in an electric vehicle can decrease the range by as much as 50%. To avoid premature aging of the temperature-sensitive lithium-ion cells, the Li-ion batteries will have to be interfaced with the vehicle’s HVAC system. In winter, the HVAC system does not only make the passenger cabin comfortably warm, but it must also ensure that the battery cells do not cool down to the extent as to become damaged during charging or regenerative braking. The temperature of the battery also has a direct impact on its performance. At low temperatures, the power output of the batteries will decrease resulting in reduced performance. On the other hand, at high temperatures, the battery will age more rapidly. So, the battery must be kept within a rather small temperature range in all operating modes to obtain optimum performance and durability. On the other hand, HVAC systems must be designed much more efficiently so as to ensure a high level of cabin comfort in summer and winter without compromising the vehicle’s driving range. Additionally, the air conditioning of light-duty vehicles in e.g. the US consumes 7 billion gallons of gasoline every single year. As such, in addition to improvements in battery thermal management, there are tremendous opportunities for improving the efficiency of heating and cooling systems in general and for developing low-power thermal comfort systems for electric vehicles to minimize reductions in range.
