Morning Baker

Cover Letter May 15, 2015

Renee Burke Yearbook and Newspaper Advisor 1000 E Kaley St Orlando, FL 32806 Dear Mrs. Burke, As a first year staffer this year, I feel I have grown in experience and knowledge as this qualifies me for Ad Staff. I would really love to aid in creating the senior ads and business ads, which makes up a large portion of the yearbook and has a lot of money on the line. This experience on staff has granted me the ability to communicate with my peers and work together with them in the best interests of the book as a whole. I have learned the operations of a publication and what it takes to be published. Though I had a rough start, I proved my dedication to this staff through my extra time spent after school and at home, working on my deadlines and other works. This year has taught me to utilize time management and communication to my advantage. I believe with my experience on staff, I will demonstrate my ability to design spreads and create and sell advertisements for the benefit of the book. Along with my Yearbook experience, I have experience from my parents’ business, Harvey Baker Plumbing, Inc., in communicating with customers and engaging in office work.

Respectfully,

Morning Baker

Essay & Reflections

morningbaker13@gmail.com

From the time I was a toddler, I had an interest in writing. I found pleasure in engaging in writing short stories, poems, songs, and books. The only category of writing I hadn’t been enlightened in was journalism. When I saw “Journalism 1” on the elective sheet for students enrolling in classes freshman year, I knew I wanted to tackle it. But, as my life with gymnastics was becoming more intense, I had to sacrifice one elective at school for an extra hour in the gym. This meant that I would have to remove Journalism 1 from my course schedule. Within four months of my freshman school year, my gymnastics career was tragically ripped away from me by a wrist injury called Dorsal Impingement. This led to the ability of applying for Journalism 1 sophomore year. I had Journalism 1, or “J1” as Mrs. Burke called it, first period. Everyday, I was excited about learning more on this topic. When Mrs. Burke began teaching us about Yearbook rules and design, I knew that there was something I felt inclined to attempt. I had always been an artistic person with years of school and recreational art classes behind me. Computer program design in Adobe products such as InDesign and Photoshop was something I felt was meant for me. I was able to grasp onto the concepts with ease. By the end of the year, applications for Yearbook and Newspaper were due, and I was torn between which side to choose. I went to students on both staffs and Mr. and Mrs. Burke for guidance. In the end, I decided on Yearbook because while my writing skills were up to parr, I felt my design skills were something I wished to pursue. Upon being accepted for the 2015 Yearbook Staff, I was overjoyed. Entering my junior year as a staffer, I quickly learned the difficulties of an open publication. One of the most difficult thing I encountered was making deadlines. While the final product of the spreads I produced seem “easy” to average students, but the process and creation was difficult, especially as a first year staffer. I experienced difficulty with communication, especially during Deadline 2. Many factors went into why it lasted two deadlines, but I did my best to overcome the situation in the following deadlines. My difficulty with communication stemmed from personal issues from which I have found help to get on the road to overcome. I have become more open and now have the ability to communicate with my peers and authority figures. I believe that I have grown enough to become confident in myself and have the ability to complete this job effectively.

Reflection 1

Deadline 2 was by far my worst deadline all year. In total, my deadline lasted from Deadline 2 to Deadline 4. My initial problem was finding usable students for the Cars page, which meant the students would have to have a cool car or a car with a unique story. After scavenging the student lot, I found students, but most of them were Hit listed or already used somewhere in the book. Instead of going to my advisor and editors, I kept this to myself. After I found definite students for the page, I wasn’t sure where to turn. I wasn’t sure if I should write the story or design the page first. I attempted at designing the page, but then I faced questions pertaining to secondary coverage: What mods should I use? What facts should I compile? What would this page even look like? Already into Deadline 3, I got with the Design editor and created a layout for the page which would include four stories, four secondary coverage mods and many pictures. After submitting this design to the Editor-in-Chief, and getting my design declined, I was told to write the stories first. As I wrote the stories, I missed due dates with editors because I wasn’t able to submit an actual page. I was becoming increasingly worried, and decided to finish the design with the Design editor. She worked with me again, and again the design was declined. As Deadline 4 approached and the Cars page was still nowhere near done, my advisor, parents and I met in a meeting to discuss this spread. We came up with a game plan together, and designed the page on paper on the spot. Over the following two weeks, I submitted the page to my advisor for edits, and was finally able to complete it. Though the page was my worst, I think it shows the most growth. Because I was a new staffer and this was my first deadline alone, I believe that the circumstances were justifiable, even though they were also terrible.
