May 8th, 2015 Renee Burke William R. Boone High School 1000 E. Kaley St Orlando, FL 32806 Dear Mrs. Burke, I would be grateful to be apart of the Legend Yearbook staff for a second time. I am hoping to be a publications staffer for the 2016-2017 school year. This past year on staff I have learned how to use Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge and Adobe InDesign. Adobe Photoshop has taught me how to edit photos for press and Adobe InDesign taught me to design unique layouts for the yearbook. These qualifications make me a perfect candidate for the 2016-2017 publications staff. Throughout this past year my writing and photography have greatly improved. I am willing to spend time during lunch and after school working on my deadlines for this book. I can be helpful and am great under pressure, I will try my best to meet deadlines and complete photo days and help others as well. I appreciate the opportunity to be considered for the position of a staffer. Attached is my resumĂŠ to show my qualifications for this position. I look forward to speaking to you more in our interview. Respectively yours, Kristen Collins

ANALYTICAL E S S AY

Kristen Collins

This past year I have put my skills to the test. I have gradually gotten better with meeting deadlines and being able to deal with time management. Although I did not make many deadlines I did begin to create a system to better my time management and get things done quicker. Teamwork has been a big component this past school year for the publications staff. When one staff member needs help another is always there, whether it’s getting an interview or helping with a COB. At the beginning of the school year I went to businesses around division street and talked to managers and business owners about buying an ad in the 2015-2016 yearbook. Talking to these people and selling them ADs helped my sales and advertising skills greatly. Deadline three was by far my toughest deadline, between getting interviews from coaches and finding good enough pictures for the spread. This spread taught me about overcoming hardships. The skills that I have gotten throughout this year will help me the next few years on staff and also later in life. Meeting deadline will always be a factor in my life whether it’s school or even jobs. Scholastic Journalism has impacted my life in a positive way, it has helped me with both my writing skills and my photography. This class will help me in the future because it will give me the skills I need to succeed in life.

REFLECTION ONE

Kristen Collins

My most significant piece this year was the Girls Volleyball spread. This spread was very hard for me and that is why I think it is the most significant. When I first started the spread my design was completely different, my dominant picture was horizontal and my body copy was extremely choppy. As the deadline progressed so did my spread. Matt Casler helped me design a completely different spread with a vertical dominant and my body copy began to run more smoothly. For a long time I could not get the interview from the head coach Mike Ladewski, this made it hard for me to turn in my body copy to anyone because i had no quotes from him in my story. It was late in the deadline and my copy was not right yet, it took a long amount of time for me to get to Burke but eventually I got to her and made it into majors. I am happy with how the spread turned out in the final draft. Although I only took one of the photos, I do like the ones that I ended up using. My favorite part about this spread is the headline, I made it as a joke when I made my first design. I had no intention of keeping the headline as “ Winner Winner Hornet Dinner but the editors liked it so i kept it. This piece was a turning point for me, it made the rest of the deadlines a bit more bearable and more fun to work on.

REFLECTION T WO

Kristen Collins y28. Student Life Spread:one spread I chose the homecoming week spread to

represent me in the student Life category. I spent weeks working on this spread and I am beyond proud of how it turned out. My favorite part about this spread is the dominant photo because it looks like he is kicking the ball right to the body copy. This page flows together so well, from the photography to the writing I believe this is the perfect spread to represent me.

Y16. sports action photo

I chose this action photo from a Lady Braves Volleyball game to represent me in the sports photo category. It shows action because she is in the air setting the ball to her teammate. This photo was published on the girls volleyball spread and I am very proud of it. I think this is a great action shot to represent my photography.

Y32. Academic spread:one spread For the academics category I chose my spread on labs. I enjoyed this spread because it’s interesting to see all of the cool labs from different science classes throughout the page. My favorite part of this spread is the dominant photo because it was a really cool lab with black lights and smoke. I think this spread would be a great representation of the work I have put in to this yearbook.
