Mackenzie Mock 2147 Santa Antilles Rd, Orlando, FL 32806 mackenziemock18@gmail.com (407) 267-7005 May 11, 2015 Mike James Sports Topic Editor Los Angeles Times 202 W First St. Los Angeles, CA 90012 Dear Mr. James: Perhaps the Los Angeles Times is looking for a young mind who works well in group settings, can manage her time and is knowledgeable about sports. If this is the kind of person you are searching for, then please accept the accompanying resume for your review and consideration for the summer internships you offer in which these qualities will be valued and help your staff. As the Copy Editor of my high school newspaper, I continuously wrote and graded stories, researched, photographed events and designed pages. In using InDesign and Photoshop I have become comfortable with these applications and feel that I can use both effectively. Being my second year on staff, I brought experience, background knowledge and leadership skills. Working with 14 other members on staff has taught me patience, focus and how to work well in group settings. Creatively, I enjoy writing pieces that come together in the paper and are bursting with knowledge. As a focused person, I would be a good fit for this internship because I always meet deadline and turn in my best work. Never do I slack during class, and I always pay attention to small details. Your focused attitude would give me a chance to soak up knowledge and learn things that cannot simply be taught in a classroom. Although the accompanying resume provides adequate background information, I think a personal interview would better show you what I can do and how I do it. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you at a convenient time. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Respectfully yours,
Mackenzie Mock Enclosed: resume

Analytical essay
I became involved with journalism my freshman year of high school. I signed up for Journalism 1 to fill an empty spot in my schedule. Through J1, I learned to love writing, designing and photography. I wanted to continue with journalism so I took the next step and decided to join newspaper. Through this years newspaper course, I have learned multiple skills regarding production, deadlines, journalism ethics and overcoming hardships. Before becoming an editor, I never realized how much time went into perfecting the paper on press day. In previous years, I had just written my stories and when I went to deadline I was done with the issue. However, as Copy Editor I had to step up and become more involved this year. I learned the production of a paper is not just the dates we set on our story planners. After going through four editors, the stories are still not ready to go to press. They must be peer edited, spell checked, have their graphics checked, edited by Meghan or myself and then looked over by Mrs. Burke before they are ready to go to press. This lengthened the production process as a whole for myself because I was expected to stay after school on press days until everything the paper was sent to the printer. I learned that the production process has a lot of little steps that may seem minute and useless but are very important to the overall look of the paper. By being Copy Editor I also realized the importance of deadlines and how frustrating it can be when staffers do not meet them. I had always turned my stories in on time, but this year it was harder for me I missed a lot of school. Although I missed deadlines, my stories were always completed before press day. However, there were kids who never missed class and still would not turn their stories in on time. This was very confusing because if I could do it then others should be able to as well. Also, having twenty stories to grade in one night was very frustrating because I had other classes to do work for and Mrs. Burke had specifically set up a calendar so the other editors and myself would not be swamped with stories one night. But because most staffers did not follow the calendar I was up until midnight every night during press week grading stories. By writing the Our View each issue I had to be very aware of journalism ethics. Almost every time I went to Mrs. Burke my story was rearranged or changed, not because my writing was bad, but because I needed to make sure everything was backed up by facts and was academically appropriate. In my Our View about dress code, there was some serious backlash from administration and teachers regarding an inappropriate word and how the story had made the school look. Through that story specifically I learned that even though some people did not respond well to the story, I still had to be proud of it because I had worked very hard with Mrs. Burke to perfect it, and I stood for everything I had written. This year I had family and personal issues that I had to overcome in order to complete my work and do my job as Copy Editor. At first, it was very difficult because I was never at school and didn’t know how to balance everything on my plate. I was not completing my work in a timely fashion and others had to pick up my slack. I did not know how to fix it so I talked to Mrs. Burke. Once I explained my situation she understood and gave me advice for getting through it. I realized that no matter what you’re going through someone has gone through something similar and is there for you to talk to. Also, things may be difficult but in order to get through them you need to keep your head up and fix what you can control like in my case, newspaper. So I put my energy towards newspaper and became more dedicated. All of the skills I listed above and many more I will take with me and use in the future. Production, deadlines, ethics and overcoming hardships will be a part of my life no matter what college I go to or what I major in or what I do for a living. The principles regarding journalism that I have learned through my four years with Mrs. Burke will stick with me for the rest of my life as well as the life lessons she has taught us. I was an asset to the 2015 Hi-Lights staff. I wrote stories, designed pages, took photos that were placed in the newspaper and yearbook, edited fellow staffers’ stories, conducted interviews, and brain stormed story ideas and helped others with their work as well. Being Copy Editor I edited every story in each issue going to press to make them as perfect as they could be. Some stories I helped re-write or re-design. I also was at every workday and almost all of the editors’ workdays on press day. Multiple days I stayed until past 7 p.m. proofreading and spell checking pages. As an editor and returning staffer I feel I was an asset to this year’s staff.
Reflection 1
I think my most significant piece of work this year was my spread on the senior commitments in the May issue. This spread was my best piece because it was my favorite story to cover. When you are really passionate about a topic it makes writing about it or covering it a lot easier. I’m passionate about sports and getting to talk to all of my friends who are going to the next level to play in college was not work for me, it was fun. My purpose of this spread was based off a spread in Sports Illustrated. The spread was posed, close up shots with different athletes in their uniforms and a piece of equipment. Their name, sport, and any awards or achievements were placed next to them as well as their signature. I thought this would be a cool way to highlight our 23 college commits that would also draw the attention of students. This spread was very difficult to complete. First, I had to email Mr. Patterson asking for all the names of students that had committed. This seems simple but it wasn’t because not everyone had committed yet or was not on his list. Then, I had to organize a day that all the athletes could come in to a side room and take their picture. I had to use special lighting like in a studio as to not get shadows. This involved me texting each one and hunting them down until they all came in. It was difficult because everyone had different schedules and some of the students weren’t very responsible. I then had to make questionnaires for each student to fill out and make sure they signed their names legibly and on blank, white paper. I took the photos, interviewed each student and got their signatures. Then I had to design the spread and decide where each kid was going to go. I had the photos in before I place their names, sports, colleges and quotes. Mrs. Burke then taught me how to use quick selection to cob the signatures and place them. Everything seemed complete until the entire paper was put into color. So I not only had to put each athlete in CMYK but I also had to cob them. Then Mrs. Burke taught me how to create a gradient tile and placed them behind the athletes. Finally I wrote a short intro and turned my spread into the editors. I was a week late on deadline because it was a lengthy process cobbing, cropping and sizing all the pictures and I was sick and missed school as well. But once I turned my story in it went through Meghan and Mrs. Burke within two days and had barely any edits. I really liked the overall look of the final product. Mrs. Burke made a good call on cobbing the athletes and leaving them in color while placing a gradient behind them. It was different than what I had based it off of but I think it looked better. Although this spread was very difficult, frustrating at times and super stressful I am in love with how it finally turned out. All of my hard work and the hours I spent on the computer were worth how great it looked when I first opened the paper.
Relfection 2 N3. Editorial writing, p. 2 November I would like my piece, “Colleges should say yes” to represent me in the CSPA Gold Circle competition. This was my second Our View of the year so I was starting to get the hang of editorial writing and it was a topic I felt strongly about so it was easy to write. The editorial was about how colleges need to take more action in sexual assault on campus. I believe I did a good job of informing students on how sexual assault is currently handled at universities and how it should be handled as well as prevented and treated. This was an important but difficult topic to cover and I handled it well. I did my research and made sure to word everything appropriately. In the end, I was very pleased with the final product.
N.9 Sports news, p. 14, March I would like my piece, “First quarter troubles team” to represent me in the CSPA Gold Circle competition. This story covered the boys’ lacrosse season and how they were a strong team but lacked concentration in the beginning of the game. I liked this piece because it was not just a recap of their season but it gave stats on specific important games and also included some news regarding the way districts are drawn and how lacrosse does not have a class system regarding playoffs. Coach Whitton was very cooperative and let me interview him multiple times so I could make sure I got exactly what I needed. I also liked writing this story because I had to go to the games to take pictures and tweet for my beat so it was exciting to get to watch my friends and the rest of the team play. I think I did a good job of summarizing the season as well as informing readers of key moments and how the team overcame challenges.
N62. Sports Page Design Tabloid format, p. 22-23, May I would like my piece “Seniors show commitment” to represent me in the CSPA Gold Circle competition. This was a spread highlighting the seniors who had committed to play sports in college. I think this spread is very visually appealing and is a creative way to cover all 23 athletes. I received very positive feedback from students, coaches and parents. My hard work and effort paid off in how great the final product looked and I would like it to represent me not just because it looks good but because I put so much energy into it.
Relfection 3
Through three years of being on newspaper I have grown greatly as a writer, designer, photographer and person. Most importantly I have become a better leader. Being an editor has taught me how to not only copy edit stories and fix pages but also how to give constructive criticism and what it takes to make pieces the best. I have become a much more vocal part of staff this year, voicing my opinions during story card ideas and in class teachings. My writing has grown specifically in now I can write editorials and columns. I used to only focus on news, feature or sports stories but this year I had to write the Our View which helped me branch out into opinion pieces leading me to write ITZ for an issue. I realized how much I liked to write my opinion but how hard it was to do so because I could say whatever I wanted but had to back it up with facts. My designing skills also branched out as I started creating infographics for the Our Views and designed my own pages and spreads like boys lacrosse and senior commits. I also learned how to new skills in Photoshop and InDesign like how to create gradients, use the quick selection and magic wand tools and create shapes. I had two photos published in the yearbook which is an accomplishment for me because I did not have any pictures printed at all the past two years. I learned how to use cameras more efficiently by listening to tips from Mr. Evertsen at basketball games and working with Big Bertha at lacrosse games. I do think I was less dedicated to staff this year as well as not as involved with fellow staffers. I had a bunch of other stuff going on that I let distract me and take me away from newspaper. I put sports, family and friends before the publication which was not fair or right. I learned towards the end of the school year how to fix that but I wish I would’ve realized sooner how important newspaper is. I can not make a career out of water polo or going out with friends, but I can have a career in journalism and have started to think more and more about it. Going to New York and listening to the women at Cosmo really inspired me and gave me ideas of what I could possibly want to be when I grow up. Being under the guidance and teaching of Mrs. Burke for four years has helped me grow as a person as well. She helped me become a stronger writer, photographer and designer as well as a stronger woman. Spending time with Mrs. Burke in New York and getting to know her made me realize that even though she is super woman in juggling three publications and a class, she’s also human and I can be like her one day too. Mrs. Burke has been a positive female role model for me throughout high school especially because I did not have one at home. She has helped me realize I cannot let what others do affect me, and that I have a pretty great life ahead of me if I can just get past these moments. Not only do I not want kids like Mrs. Burke but I hope to be as respected and loved as she is one day. I am happy to have spent part of my high school years on Hi-Lights staff and in Room 224.
