A Personal Essay
I feel like journalism is one of the most important jobs in the world because it provides people with news and gets people interested in things that they may not be aware of without prior knowledge of the subject. I first got started in journalism when I joined the newspaper staff my freshman year; however, I have always been interested in the subject of journalism and have always wanted to pursue a career in the field. In order to succeed in journalism, I had to overcome my lazy habits and really force myself to focus on what is important and what needs to be done now versus what can be done later. I think I have contributed a new and different outlook on Entertainment to journalism using my voice. I think it’s very important to put my personal touch to every column that I write and make the reader enter my own mind when he reads my work. My plans regarding journalism are still slightly unclear at the moment, I understand that there are many differing fields in the industry and I plan to “dip my toes into as many as possible before I make any final decisions on the matter.
A self-Analytical Essay
I have learned many things in journalism class this year that will help advance me in the future. Actual production skills that I have learned include putting layouts together and making them look the best that they can be using pictures, text and secondary coverage. I have really grown to understand the importance of deadlines because if the paper does not come out when it is scheduled to then some stories will be irrelevant and it sets off the balance of readership who expect the paper on certain dates. In the course, I have learned about teamwork and how important that is because often times one person can’t do every task and the help of others can relieve stress and get jobs done faster, something that really makes the paper worthwhile. I’ve learned that sales and advertising are the driving force behind what helps pay for the paper because without advertising the paper would not be able to go to press most times due to a lack of funding. One of the most important things I have learned this year is journalism ethics such as not using copyrighted images and flipping pictures for one’s benefit, tasks like these are irresponsible and show bad journalism habits. In my fourth year as a staff member, I have really learned about dedication by staying after school, even when I have nothing to do myself, because being dedicated and helping the paper be the best it can be are what make the paper so special. I will use these skills in the future when I get a job somewhere in the journalism field and decide to further move on in life.
Reflection One
I think my most significant piece of work this year has been my column on why America needs One Direction. It is so special because I feel like I pretty much predicted the future in it. I first wrote it because I thought Americans needed to know about One Direction, since they were such a fantastic band, but I had no idea that within four months after being printed, the band would become the biggest UK success to ever come to America. It was so easy to write because it was basically spitting out all the things that made One Direction a huge success in the UK and exactly why that would play over well in the states. Looking back and realizing that I was right about what I was discussing with my readers and that I know good talent when I see it. The process I went through writing this story was fairly simple and only entailed writing in details to make it more relatable and worth reading.

One Direction rocks British scene
T
he ocean that separates the United Kingdom from America can also be referred to as the ocean that separates this country from one of Britain’s greatest entertainment accomplishments of all time. The introduction of boy band One Direction proves this statement. However, despite the groups massive popularity in Europe, almost nobody in America has any idea who these boys are. One Direction was discovered on the British version of the X-Factor and finished third in the show’s seventh season. One Direction consists of Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne. Each member of the band auditioned as a solo artist and Simon Cowell placed them in a group, deciding they would work well together and sell numerous records. It is preposterous that they have no recognition in the States because they represent everything the music industry stands for when it comes to American pop standards of look and sound. British record label Syco recently signed the band who released their first single “What Makes You Beautiful.” The single went to number one on the Radio 1 charts in Britain. The single also released a B-Side entitled “Na Na Na.” Americans who have not heard the band’s “What Makes You Beautiful” will instantly fall in love with the upbeat music that it resonates. It combines swooning lyrics and a catchy instrumental that together create a fantastic song to launch the boys’ career. If one listens to one of the band’s covers from their stint on X-Factor, one can appreciate their real ability to sing. Each member adds his amazing vocals to songs the band performed on the show including “(Only Girl) In the World,” “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” “Kids In America,” “Summer of ‘69,” and “All You Need is Love.” The band members personalities also shine through their various web videos, interviews and Twitter posts. Each member represents a different personality trait, yet they work together well and are extremely close friends. These varying personalities easily relate to the different types of fans, something which ultimately affects who one’s favorite member of the band is. The boys have created a series of inside jokes with their fans including Styles’ obsession with David Hasselhoff, somebody he states he would like to trade lives with for a day because he wants to know what it would be like to be him. When Tomlinson stated on a live video chat that he really likes carrots, he made a statement about how his fans made a connection with him and carrots and eventually started to send him carrots in the mail. He then began to joke that he really likes Rolex watches. The band’s interactions with fans helps draw in a larger fanbase because they can relate to them on a more personal level. Styles, for example, will randomly retweet fans and can be found wishing a happy birthday via a tweet. In various web videos and live chats, the band members can be found answering questions from fans and singing song requests. The band’s looks are also a contributing factor in their rising fame, although it is shallow to say, it is true. Each member has a completely different look. From Styles’ curly hair to Payne’s beaming smile to Malik’s pouty model presence, the band’s looks are a force to be reckoned with because each one is both attractive and unique in appearance. With much of Justin Bieber’s success coming from his combination of good looks, charming personality and amazing voice, it is a wonder as to why the boys of One Direction are not on the same level of fame. With the group talking to record labels here in America, the possibility of them becoming famous in America is extremely likely. The band’s debut album Up All Night premieres Nov. 21 in the UK and can be purchased as an import at www.amazon.com

Reflection Two
I think the piece that could still use work is my column on the things that shaped me growing up. I learned about what important issues to high light from the past and how to add personal voice to a column that readers will enjoy. The work evolved from first draft to final draft through its use of details and making certain things clearer to the audience. If I had the chance to improve it, I probably would have picked a few different items, like I would have switched Sabrina, the Teenage Witch with something like Disney Channel Original Movies. I also would have probably added a few more lessons that I was taught by these items instead of just focusing on why I liked them. Although there are still things that I would change about the piece, I do have a very high respect for the work because it captured my childhood in a good light and I feel like my voice really got across in it. It was definitely a great way to start off my senior year.

s my 18th birthday approaches, this issue’s entertainment column marks an end to my final days as a child. For every person there are events that shape a childhood and most of the events that helped shape me include ones from the ever-changing entertainment industry. Britney Spears- One of the most well known celebrities on the planet, Britney Spears stands as more than just a musician for this fan. She was in a sense, like a mother to me. When I had no one else to turn to or I felt most alone in the world, I would listen to Spears’ music or watch her music videos, performances, documentaries, specials and interviews. Spears’ dancing and performance skills gave me the confidence to be myself and fight for my goals. Her sex appeal was also a huge factor in my life, as I strove to see what she would do next so I could imitate it in both dance and style. To this day, I put on shows in my room every night, dancing to entire tours and making my own routines to songs that do not have videos or performances. It is this kind of dedication that made me realize my dream of one day becoming Spears’ backup dancer or transforming into a Britney Spears impersonator. Since the age of five, Spears has been both a learning tool and an escape. After the release of her first single “…Baby One More Time,” I officially found my inspiration for the future and something that would make me happy for the rest of my life, teaching me to be myself and live life so that it would make me happy, not others. Disney Movies- This mega-empire has continued to capture the imaginations of children across the globe since the 1950’s, and it was definitely no different for me. As a child, I watched Disney movies almost everyday; my favorites were The Little Mermaid and The Lion King. I always dreamed of being a mermaid growing up and still do to this day, which is why watching The Little Mermaid was such a huge part of my life. I always watched it with the hopes that I could one day become a mermaid, much like Ariel became a human. Disney’s sense of dreams and imagination gave me the hope growing up that mermaids actually existed and I could one day find the proper magic in the world to transform me into one. Nickelodeon- In the 1990’s, Nickelodeon was the sole existence of most children with it is wide range of great TV shows, including Rugrats, The Wild Thornberry’s, All That, Kablam and Rocko’s Modern Life, to name a few. Watching these shows everyday after school was a must. It was something to look forward to and do whenever one got bored. These shows taught me that being a kid was important and living it to the fullest was mandatory. ABC soap operas- Growing up, I would watch both General Hospital and One Life to Live with my grandparents and my mom. The soap operas planted an obsession. Soap opera’s constant changing plot lines and dangerous lifestyles truly intrigued me I even wrote a letter to Kristen Alderson, who plays Starr Manning on OLTL, and she not only replied, but even included an autographed picture. These shows were something I looked forward to everyday after school and when I missed one, I would hound my relatives to tell me what had happened. These soaps taught me that life can sometimes be extremely unexpected and even though it may not happen as drastically as it does in these shows, life can still change without warning. Sabrina, the Teenage Witch- This was perhaps the greatest show ever created in the history of mankind and I saw every episode growing up; I followed it religiously. I was obsessed with the magical abilities Sabrina possessed and Melissa Joan Hart, who plays Sabrina Spellman. Hart was good friends with Britney Spears and had Spears make a guest appearance on the show in 1999, which is my favorite episode. Every character was hilarious and relatable in his own way. The show created something that was so unreal it almost became reality and posed the question of whether magical creatures secretly exist within our lives or not. All of these events served as stepping stones toward adulthood for me. They were either making me happy or teaching me lessons of being myself, understanding the difficulty of life, being a kid and dreaming.

I really enjoy this picture because I feel like it captures a good use of motion without completely washing the photo out. It’s ability to show movement without making the picture super blurry is truly a wonderous element in the photo. I’m definitely proud of this photo, especially for somebody who doesn’t think photographing is his strong suit. (Drama 3-7_Tyler235.jpg)
I really enjoy this picture because I feel like it captures a good variation of emotions and has good perception of distance. I love the high tension in the top half of the picture, opposed to the soft and gentle nature of the bottom half. The lighting is also a factor that draws me to the photo. (Drama 3-7_Tyler271.jpg)
I like this photo because it has a good sense of action and composition. It shows good emotion between the two figures and provides that sense of “reader commentary that only certain photos can give, meaning that the person viewing the picture can write their own captions for the photo. (SGA 9-29_Tyler002.jpg)
Reflection Four
I believe that I was an asset to the 2012 edition of Hi-Lights because I put my input into the paper with each every issue. I helped design the covers of each issue and the double page spread. I also contributed by giving my column to the public in every issue, something that I feel was a strong push of my voice. I was also an asset to the hilights. org staff through my reviews of TV shows, concert specials, albums and movies. Since entertainment is my main calling in journalism, It was extremely important for me to try writing things that involved around that aspect of journalism, while still dipping my feet into a few other news stories. I really believe that I showed my commitment to the staff by staying after school when I needed to and working at home on almost every story. On my story about Drama’s production of Once Upon a Mattress, I had to work with another student and since we didn’t have class time to write it, we both used Skype to get the story written, something that I believe makes up for using time well and not making up excuses to get something written.
Reflection FIVE
Problems/ hardships that I faced this year included trying to balance work with getting stories written and/or designing different sections of the paper. I learned that sometimes its hard to try “doing it all and that things won’t always go the way that you want. Unfortunately, problems like school and work will be a factor for quite some time because the two go hand in hand for most students. I plan to balance these two things bu managing time when things get stressful and making sure that certain days are taken off when they need to be. Overall, I feel like I handled the situation really well because I somehow always made it to work and always got my stories written/ designs done on time.
Reflection Six
In the mid-term I said my greatest publication related weakness was keeping stress at a minimum. I improved from this by starting all my designs earlier so that they wouldn’t feel so rushed and unimportant. I also began writing stories as soon as I got them and getting necessary interviews and pictures as soon as could so that the story could focus on adding details rather than adding content. Being able to do these things really helped lower my stress in that aspect, of course I was stressed during deadline days but to be honest if you aren’t stressed during deadline then you probably don’t care about the paper.
Reflection Seven

here are said to be seven wonders of the world created by God himself, and I believe these spectacles are the seven albums of Britney Spears. Which, through my eyes were created by God, who I believe to be Britney Spears. Each album is a wondrous journey through her combination of talented vocals and upbeat instrumentals. The best part of listening to Spears’ albums in chronological order is experiencing her life through music. Spears’ first two albums ...Baby One More Time and Oops!... I Did It Again were a look into the innocent life Spears led as a young girl. These albums presented quirky songs teenagers could sing along to and find relatable. Her third album, Britney, began to dig into a young girl who was trying to grow up. With songs like “I’m a Slave 4 U” and “Overprotected,” she openly stated she was not a little girl anymore. She also began to dress a little more promiscuously and added suggestive dancing to her music videos. Her fourth album, In The Zone, told the story of a young adult who just wanted to be herself and escape the media. Spears’ fifth album Blackout was a memoir of the dark times in her life, released in the heart of all the drama surrounding her. Songs like “Piece of Me” and “Why Should I Be Sad” were strong hits against the things that tried bringing her down, like the paparazzi and ex-husband Kevin Federline. Her sixth album, Circus, was exactly that, a circus. It detailed the whirlwind of a life she began to have once she started trying to get back into the spotlight. This album was a great stepping tool to get Britney’s life back on track. We are now left with possibly Spears’ greatest album so far, Femme Fatale, which released in March 2011. Her seventh album proves she still has the “it-factor,” and she can put on a show like nobody else. If one watches The Femme Fatale Tour, he can easily see Spears’ rocking body and high energy create the spectacle that is the one and only Britney Spears. A god is defined as a being who becomes the source of all moral obligation and the greatest existent known to man. With a definition like this, in my eyes only one person comes to mind and that is Britney Spears. Now, I know you might be thinking how extremely inappropriate it is for me to refer to Britney Spears as a god, and it is an insult to religions around the world. Well, it is in fact my opinion and growing up I have always placed her on a higher pedestal than anyone else. She stands a leader, as a representation of how to live life and most importantly as the main reason why fans who worship Spears exist. Spears is definitely the main reason I’m happy with my life today, as cliche as it sounds. It is almost impossible to explain the feeling she gives to me. I can recall the first time I ever saw Spears in person. It was Saturday May 19, 2007, and I went to the House of Blues Orlando with my mom to see her live. The show was 15 minutes and featured no opening acts. Spears performed under the alias “The M+M’s.” When Spears first came out at the show, I began to hyperventilate, and I was on such a “Britney high” it was ridiculous. Since that night, I have seen Spears three more times. Each time Spears comes out on stage at a show, I am unable to breathe from over-excitement and admiration toward her. One of the other great emotions I get from Spears’ presence and existence is feeling like I can accomplish anything and that I’m “on top of the world.” She gives me this energy that cannot be topped by anything else. Besides being just a god for me, Spears serves as a higher being for a whole handful of fans. She has reached such massive success throughout her career; it is inevitable for her to be considered as such a figure. According to the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, Britney Spears is the biggest selling female artist of the 2000’s and is the only female artist to have all seven of her album’s appear at number one or two on the Hot 100 chart. She is one of the most famous and sought-out celebrities in the world and for her to still be relevant in today’s society, where famous people lose their “in” faster than Kim Kardashian’s marriage, indicates how strong of a force she is. Spears is more than just the greatest artist to ever make it on to the music scene, she is a god to fans like me who look up to her. So remember, All hail Godney and praise the holy spearit.

this piece to represent me because it provides multiple experiences from my childhood that helped me become who I am today and uses my voice to portray it well.
Reflection Eight
I think I have grown significantly over my four years on staff, my design has become much more advanced; evolving from simple brushes and cutting out figures to playing with shapes and adding textures to a background. I think the writing has also improved as I’ve grown, it definitely shows maturity and growth through use of words and reflection choices. Overall, I feel like each portfolio has become more and more professional.

Un-scene heroes By TYLER PATRICK Each day Boone Broadcasting Company airs the daily announcements, which can include campaign speeches, information about upcoming drama performances and highlight footage from Friday night’s football game and halftime event. While all the viewer usually sees is the end product, countless hours go into each event. What people do not often see, is the Band Boosters ensuring the musicians have their instruments for
performances; the drama tech staff creating the set for the play; Student Government Association organizing events, like tonight’s Kiss the Pig; and BBC filming all of these (and more) to edit into their 5-minute show. Check out the feature stories on four selected organizations to get a inside look into the magic that happens behind what the eye can see.

s my 18th birthday approaches, this issue’s entertainment column marks an end to my final days as a child.

Unhealthy diets cause problems By DELANEE BOGAN and TYLER PATRICK Standing 5’ 2” and topping the scale at 185 with a BMI of 30, categorizes the teen as obese, which is not uncommon according to current research. According to kidshealth.org, one third of all people ages 2-19 are overweight or obese. As the obesity rates of teens grow significantly , this epidemic is plaguing the country. Obese teens are at risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, fatigue and potential death. In January, the USDA replaced the

21 in the UK and can be purchased as an import at www.amazon.com

ne should look beyond the screaming fans and constant allegations to see the true star that is Justin Bieber. One hears at least 10 negative comments made about Bieber on a daily basis, and this is completely preposterous. Bieber is an all around, well-rounded celebrity. From his great music to his generous nature, Bieber represents a star worth looking up to. After being discovered by Scooter Braun at 14 as a kid singing on Youtube, Bieber released his first single “One Time” and instantly became the talk of the every town. Bieber attracted both die-hard fans and a band of haters. Most comments made toward Bieber’s music were about his not yet matured voice; however, people should realize that puberty hits at different times. If one listens to Bieber’s albums in chronological order, he can hear how Bieber’s voice gets deeper as he ages. Bieber combines his swooning vocals and “swag” into each of his albums; something that pleases both him and his fans. His combination of slow and upbeat music can appeal to all audiences. Bieber released a Christmas album entitled Under the Mistletoe, which features original songs and classics such as “Silent Night” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” The album also features duets with Mariah Carey, Busta Rhymes and Usher. Apart from his Christmas album, Bieber has also paired with Ludacris, Sean Kingston and Drake for tracks on his previous albums. Bieber’s collaborations with big name artists like these are proof he is actually a talented singer and worth one’s time. Another attribute to Bieber’s success is his gigantic heart. Bieber is constantly giving money to charities. He is donating all his proceeds from Under the Mistletoe to seven different charities and said on his website, “I know firsthand that if you believe in your dreams, everything is possible.” Bieber recently donated a pair of his autographed shoes to help the Orlando Ballet raise money in a fundraising auction. Bieber’s shoes sold for $650. Bieber also uses fan interactions as another way to give back to the community. Bieber surprises one fan at every show, where his team picks one girl from the crowd and allows her to come on stage. The fan then sits in a chair while Bieber sings his hit “One Less Lonely Girl” to her. Bieber swoons the girl throughout the performance and then gives her a bouquet of roses before she leaves. This usually results in a fit of tears from the fan. Bieber even tries to make time for his fans on a daily basis. He can be found tweeting fans and giving them an inside look to his life with pictures and updates of where and what he is doing. These examples are but a small fraction of the amount of time and money Bieber has used to help others and connect with his fans. Despite constant allegations by the media toward Bieber claiming he is a diva, these allegations could not be farther from the truth. If one watches Bieber’s movie Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, one can easily see how down to earth he is. All of Bieber’s family, friends and crew members help keep Bieber well grounded. Bieber’s mom is constantly referred to as his role model and inspiration during shows and interviews; something that shows how respectful and wonderful Bieber is not only as a star, but a human being as well. He tries to keep his life as normal as possible, despite his widespread fame. His most recent attempts to be a normal teenage boy are with his girlfriend Selena Gomez, who is constantly given negative comments by his jealous fans and the “life-ruining” paparazzi. They constantly take shots of both Bieber and Gomez when they try to have nice dates. However, both Bieber and Gomez ignore these attacks. They keep their heads held high and find time to be with one another. Bieber’s charming nature toward his girlfriend was apparent when he rented out the entire Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, where just the two of them watched Titanic. Bieber’s combination of fantastic musical ability and talent, his huge heart and his well grounded lifestyle help contribute to his success as an artist and promise that he will not be going anywhere anytime soon. Bieber has just the right amount of “swag” to continue on in this line of business. One should watch out for the reckoning force of Justin Bieber, a celebrity worth one’s time.

W
ith Valentine’s Day approaching, love fills the air. However, romance is found year-round in television shows through some of the most iconic couples to ever hit the big and small screens. This entertainment obsessed columnist will discuss his favorite couples and what gives them the quality to make the list. Lily and Marshall from How I Met Your Mother - These two characters are more perfect together than peanut butter and jelly. Lily and Marshall met in college and according to the show, remain together forever. These two fit so well together because they are basically the same person. Whenever Marshall is feeling something, Lily can be found feeling the same thing and vice versa. The pair are also a good representation of a great couple because they are so easily relatable. They fight, laugh and they face real life problems people potentially encounter everyday. Even when Lily and Marshall separate for the summer in the un-aired space between seasons one and two, they get back together mid-season two and the crowd learns how hard it was for the two of them to be apart from each other. There is not a better way to see true love than in the actions of these two characters. Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip from Sleeping Beauty - This pair of Disney royalty is perhaps one of the greatest imaginary couples to reach our hearts. The idea that these two lovers met “Once Upon a Dream” only adds to the magic between them. Prince Phillip’s love and passion come through when he fights for her affection and defeats the evil Maleficent to save her from eternal slumber. His kiss of “true love” is the only thing that can wake Aurora. This film is perhaps the only one that really embodies fighting for the princess, which is what makes it worthwhile as one of the top five best couples of all time. Rose and Jack from Titanic - This couple is perhaps one of the most well known and liked pair to ever come across the big screen. Their love story, based off the true story of the Titanic sinking, is as iconic as Kate Winslet’s red hair in the film. The forbidden love these two portray is exactly what most people search for in real life. However, the film’s ending is what seals the deal on their relationship. As Jack sacrifices his own life to save Rose after the ship has sunk, it is understood there is nothing but real love between them because it takes true love to die for another person. Hermione and Ron from the Harry Potter franchise - No love will ever top these two characters for this entertainment junkie. Watching them grow from young friends who fought and bickered every second to young adults who began having feelings for one another, their relationship is pure magic. Perhaps, what makes this relationship so real is the fact that Ron and Hermione were so real themselves. They fought like real couples and they love each other like real couples. Their love is something one could not find in real life. As Hermione becomes jealous of Ron when he snogs Lavender Brown in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, that sense of attraction is defined for the first time, even though there were constant suspicions from fans throughout the whole series. When Ron leaves in the first part of the seventh installment, Hermione is devastated and one can tell she is really torn by her decision to stay with Harry and help him find the horcruxes. When Ron and Hermione kiss in the final film, it was obvious they finally released all the tension between them and it is perfect. Edward and Bella from Twilight - Although this fan of the franchise first began as a supporter of Jacob and Bella’s relationship, by the fourth installment, this fan had switched to team Edward and Bella. Their love really is the definition of forbidden. Her small, gentle and fragile nature next to his cold, hard and dark soul make for a horrible match. But just as the book says “the lion fell in love with the lamb.” After Bella is transformed into a vampire like Edward, their love becomes eternal as they really do spend the rest of their lives together. Loves like these are but a fraction of all the couples to come across both the big and small screens. However, these five relationships stick out the most because they represent true love and commitment. Check out hilights.org for a list of the next five couples that did not make it into this issue of the paper.

Rising singer has tween-star potential
E
ven though America has a bundle of teen stars in the spotlight, singer Austin Mahone has the potential to become the next big thing. Mahone is a 15-year-old rising star who gained his fame from YouTube and is slowly becoming a household name. His combined use of talent, looks and personality will make him the star he is born to be. Mahone grew up in Texas with his mom, moving between Seguin, San Antonio and La Vernia. Mahone moved back to San Antonio after his mother divorced her second husband, where he briefly attended Lady Bird Johnson High School but chose to become home-schooled due to his rising success. Mahone has over 100 covers on his YouTube channel including “Someone Like You” (Adele), “Born to be Somebody” (Justin Bieber), “Find Your Love” (Drake), “Forget You” (Cee-Lo Green), and “It Will Rain” (Bruno Mars). All of these covers are phenomenal and show off Mahone’s singing ability. Mahone started posting videos on Feb. 10, 2011. He soon began gaining more and more followers who fell in love with his voice. His voice is a combination of Justin Bieber and Adam Levine, but Mahone’s voice is much deeper than Bieber’s when he started out and has a bit more of an acoustic/pop feel to it. Mahone can also play the guitar and piano to accompany him in song. Mahone’s cover of “Mistletoe” by Justin Bieber became so successful that it topped the views of the original video by Bieber himself. Two of Mahone’s covers are home made music videos where he swoons fans with multiple angles and shots. Mahone’s skyrocketed success is partly due to his major attractiveness. He is more than just a pretty face to this tween-star junkie. Mahone has a look about him that simply reads “I’m meant to be famous.” He has already gathered a large fan base of teenage girls, something other stars, like Bieber, developed early in their careers. Mahone’s fans refer to themselves as “mahomies” similar to how Bieber’s fans are called “beliebers.” Mahone is working to increase his fan base. He began using U-Stream to do live video chats with fans, previous U-Stream sessions of Mahone can be found on YouTube. Each session lasts about an hour, where Mahone answers questions and discusses his life with viewers. In one video, fans ask Mahone to impersonate different people, which he reluctantly does, but his impersonations are hilarious to say the least. He impersonates Miley Cyrus and Snooki, and also impersonates by acting British, Italian and country. Another way Mahone trys to interact with fans and make himself relatable is with his account on the site Keek and by using Twitter and Instagram to keep them updated on his life regularly. On Keek, he posts small video blogs about his life, making it easy for fans to keep up with him on a face-to-face basis. He has over 400,000 followers on Twitter and is slowly rising every day. Mahone’s style consists of a typical snapback hat, diamond studs in his ears, a chain and a collection of clothes from places such as PacSun and Hollister. This collection of popular clothes helps him create the image that people look for in celebrities. Mahone’s ability to stay down to earth while he rises to fame is an accomplishment within itself; it is very easy to become self centered and forget your roots when the whole world starts loving you at one moment. Mahone released his first single “11:11” on iTunes and it is currently in the top 200. The song is Mahone’s first attempt to really push himself in to the teen scene. This single can definitely make Mahone famous. The song is an upbeat pop tune with hints of acoustic sound, that focuses on making a wish at 11:11. Mahone is just as talented, if not more, than stars like Big Time Rush, Greyson Chance and Cody Simpson. Mahone used the right form of self-advertising by using YouTube to promote his singing; it really is the best way to get one’s self out to the public in such an Internet driven world. Mahone has the right attributes in a teen occupied industry and one can bet he won’t get lost in it. This mahomie definitely predicts that Mahone will go far in his career and could join the ranks of Justin Bieber as America’s favorite teen star. Austin Mahone will be at the Playlist-Live event at the Walt Disney World resort on March 24-25. Tickets to the event are $75.

1. PAYBACK. Prince Dauntless (Roche) argues with his mother, Queen Aggravain (Kemp) over Princess Winifred’s (Kelly) royal status after her fate is revealed. “I hope people will have a fun time and that they will laugh, smile and leave happier,” junior Caleb Roche said. 2. SLEEP TIGHT PRINCESS. Queen Aggravain reads the incantation to help the princess fall asleep. “At first, I had mixed feelings about playing the Queen because it’s hard to play the bad guy. You have to get used to the audience not liking you. It’s a journey, but it is a lot of fun,” Kemp said. 3. SING SWEET NIGHTINGALE. The Nightingale (Brandon Dalzell) is summoned by the Queen to help sing the princess to sleep. “[Being in the cage for the whole show], I really hope that no one kills me because I get rushed on to stage really quickly in the cage and I’m not strapped in,” Dalzell, senior, said.
Drama revamps classic fairytale MODERN SPIN ADDS HUMOR TO SHOW By DELANEE BOGAN AND TYLER PATRICK When one takes a classic fairytale like The Princess and the Pea and combines it with modern society, one is given an adventure like no other. On April 12, the drama department will premier its production of Once Upon a Mattress. The drama department’s director Steve MacKinnon, who comes in to help with productions, had the idea to make the play modern. To modernize the musical, the castle resembles a rock concert. There is a scaffolding, cast iron for the walls and PBC pipes. “I think [making the play modern] will add a good modern touch to it and it will draw more crowds since the show isn’t that well known,” senior Alicia Kent, stage manager, said. Costumes for the play also help contribute to the modern aspect the cast is going for. Prince Dauntless, played by junior Caleb Roche, wears a hoodie and balloon pants with Converse, which
page 26
adds a contemporary touch to his royal costume. Characters will use cell phones as a modern element to the play. However, despite the present-day touches, the cast will still resemble aristocracy with brightly colored dresses and knight costumes. The cast rehearses four to five days a week for three hours to prepare for the show. During this time they dance, sing, set-block around the stage and rehearse their lines with each other. “Rehearsal helps keep me on pitch. Without it, we would be horrible. It really helps us get to workshop our characters and get to know them,” senior Veronica Kelly, Princess Winifred, said. The play features five main characters and four comic relief characters, with an ensemble cast of 18. In The Princess and the Pea by Hans Christian Alderson, a young prince must marry a real princess, meaning she is of royal blood. One night, a young girl arrives during a storm asking for a place to stay, claiming she is indeed a “real princess” despite her appearance from the rain. In an attempt to test the young girl’s royal status, the queen secretly hides a single pea underneath the bedstead. She then piles 20 mattresses and 20 feather
beds on top of one another. According to the queen, any “real princess” would feel discomfort from even a tiny pea underneath her mattress. The following morning the queen asks the princess how she slept, and when she replies that she slept awful on some “hard lump” all night, she proves that she is in fact a princess and she then is able to marry the prince. However, this vision is not the typical Princess and the Pea story people know. It dives deeper into the stories of other characters and adds comic relief to the fairytale. The musical takes a different spin on the classic princess. Princess Winifred the Wobegon is known as the Princess from the Swamps, which makes the queen doubt her royal status. In the beginning of the play, Princess Winifred swims through the castle moats to get inside. Once in, she is harassed by Queen Aggravain, and the princess plays up her awkward nature by singing the song “Shy.” Other elements of classic fairytales appear in the show by including the three princesses Snow White, Cinderella and Rapunzel. The show features a lot of innuendos that help appeal to an adult audience

viewing the production. In the song “Man to Man Talk,” King Sextimus, played by senior Jackson Upperco, who can not speak, pantomimes to his son Prince Dauntless about the “birds and the bees.” “It literally is about the birds and the bees, it features a lot of innuendos, the song is really funny and easy to sing,” Roche said. Other songs that accompany the musical help blend different styles of music like classic Broadway, Latin and hip-hop. The play uses light cues, hazers and a fog machine as a way to add special effects and transition between scenes. LED lights are used to help give a rock concert feel to the show. “I hope that [Once Upon a Mattress] will make money, people will enjoy it and support the play, the students involved will grow from the experience and parents will be proud,” drama teacher Tiffany Weagly said. Once Upon a Mattress will show in the auditorium on April 12 - 14 at 7 p.m. and on April 14 at 2 p.m. Children under five are free. The matinee show on April 14 features $8 tickets for students and senior citizens.

The soap helps save the lives of many people as the leading cause of death in children under the age of five are pneumonia and cholera, which can be prevented through regular handwashing. 3. CARVE IT OUT. Junior Anna Marie Boria helps Clean the World by carving soap into the appropriate shape for the organizations standards. “It was very fulfilling knowing that I was donating my time to an organization that has done so much to save the lives of people in need,” Boria said.

By TYLER PATRICK Donating to charities are a form of giving that can leave one in a state of good mind and great feelings. Charities are a definite way for people to help those less fortunate than themselves. Organizations like Clean the World, which recycles old soap and distributes it to local homeless citizens, as well as people in third world countries. Other organizations like Habitat for Humanity help build houses for less fortunate families and requires those seeking homes to help in the building process. Another way to contribute to a charity is by gaming which allows interactive play online to benefit those in need by sending small items like water or rice to them. No matter what way someone helps a charity, every contribution helps to satisfy the needs of others.

here are said to be seven wonders of the world created by God himself, and I believe these spectacles are the seven albums of Britney Spears.

Class president is Elizabeth McEwan. Throughout the year her time is consumed by the National Honor Society, cheer, flag football, weight lifting and track. “Right now we are focussing on the homecoming parade and the senior bonfire,” McEwan said. “[While preparing for the parade] we have to find people to donate cars that are driven during the parade. We also talk to the police department, and we tell all the schools surrounding Boone about our parade so they can come and watch and so they are aware of traffic.” Throughout the year, Senior Class Council is responsible for organizing blood drives, the senior breakfast, and events regarding graduation. On average every class president spends 8-12 hours on SGA a week. This includes time spent working during class, lunch, meetings and after school. “After we pick the theme [for homecoming] we work on ticket designs, and start picking food to have catered,” junior class president Emily Porterfield said. “This year we are going to have a few surprises; we’ve been thinking outside the box.” Porterfield, like McEwan, is a cheerleader. She is a Math Center tutor, and is on the weight lifting team. The Sophomore Class president is Brendan Francis; he plays football, runs track and is involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes. This class is preparing for the Powder Bowl and Kiss the Pig. “[While planning for powder bowl]

By RUBEN CARRILLO Mending ripped color guard flags stitch by stitch they work their way toward the end of the linen, finishing the flags and band uniforms. These band boosters work day in and day out putting their heart and soul into everything they do for the band. The 70 active boosters assist the band directors and students with anything they need for marching, concert and winter guard season. They also help with chaperoning, fund raising, and fixing uniforms and flags. “Being a band booster means a lot to me because I care about music and education. The band is made up of 180 amazing kids and two very talented directors, and I love being able to support them,” booster vice president Suzanne Komanski said. Students in band spend approximately seven hours practicing per week after school. “Being part of the band is a big commitment because the kids put a lot of time and effort into it, and they must be very dedicated. They must practice at home not just on the field,” Komanski said. Last March the band traveled to the Big Apple to play at Carnegie Hall. “It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for these kids. And I was glad to share it with them,” Komanski said with a smile on her face. Parents of band members do not have to become band boosters but are

strongly encouraged to do so. The assistant band director Jose Eslava described the most helpful booster’s as always being there when needed, they go with the flow, they do not refute things and do not try to change things. For each home game there are about 25 boosters who show up to volunteer. They either help with the concession stand, grill burgers, get kids ready for the game or fill water bottles. Brad Rohrer-Colvin is one of the 180 band kids who enjoys the company of the band boosters. “I love the boosters; they bring food and drinks. Without boosters there would be no band. They keep the band members from going insane,” Rohrer-Colvin said. The boosters arrive at the same time as the band members do, which is about 4 p.m., sometimes earlier, and they stay until all the equipment is put away and all uniforms are collected. After an away game this can be as late as 1 a.m. “It’s nice to know that the parents and the school system are working together to help us out,” Rohrer-Colvin said. The boosters work to help the band and the band directors with each and every little thing., but it also means very few days off especially during marching season.

We are very appreciative of this because now we can donate 100 percent of the proceed to the Thanksgiving baskets made in November.”

By SARA CASLER Tyler Conrady. Most students recognize this name as one of the most talented actors to ever hit the drama department’s glorious stage. But only those that are directly involved or incredibly nosey, know what it takes to put together a drama production from the set, up. Senior Naivette Henriquez is the stage manager for this production, Dracula. Before rehearsal starts, she has the crew ready to start a show or rehearsal with everything ready at a moments notice. “On Broadway, for every actor, there are five technicians. In our school, we don’t have that many people or enough room back stage, but I feel that shows [just] how important we
and costume departments to get inventive. The time period of Dracula requires a set of outfits and accessories relevant to his era. Other aspects of the technical crew never mentioned include lights, props and stage management. Junior Ali Kelly is responsible for making, fixing or scavenging any props that the actors may need. “The actors tell the story. Technicians help to create the world around the actor,” A. Kelly said. Dozens of preparations go on behind the scenes that the audience never sees. “No one ever appreciates what the tech crew does,” Stewart said. “That is, unless we don’t do it. Then the actors would only be cold, naked, quiet voices in the darkness with nothing to sit on.”
By BRIDGETTE NORRIS The scriptwriter is rushing to add the game scores from the night before while the bright lights turn on as cameras and microphones are being set up. Pressure builds as the clock ticks. With only 49 minutes in the class period, Boone Broadcasting Company students, who produce the daily newscast for students, use every second of it. When making the show, the most common mistakes are forgetting to edit, not fixing audio levels, saying the wrong scores or news. “We try to prevent the mistakes by watching the show before it airs and have a producer and director make sure mistakes do not happen.,” junior Nichole Clayton, director, said. BBC involves more positions than are visible when watching the show. Some positions that go unseen are switchers, who switch the camera back and forth; a compix, in charge of arranging the graphics in the corner of the screen behind the anchor; the scriptwriter, editors and directors. Also there is an engineering technician responsible for the introduction videos for BBC. “I want students not involved to
know the show is student oriented and they try to do the best they can,” Gerald Carrero-Santana, TV Production teacher, said. There is an eight-step process that must occur before the show is broadcasted. The scriptwriter has to check all the scores and upcoming events that need to be included. Once the script is written, it is loaded into the computer program and printed out so the anchors and other various positions have access to it in case they need it. As soon as everyone has the script, the students’ head into the studio to set up the lights and check the microphones and camera. The editor and co-editor ensure there are no errors and directs the other positions when they are ready to begin taping. “Sometimes it’s frustrating when people make negative comments. We do our best,” Clayton said. Besides the time spent in class preparing the show, the students shoot pictures and video at school events, like sports games. “The editor is under pressure with only 49 minutes to capture the show. We try our best to eliminate mistakes but sometimes they happen and we do our best to fix it [the] next time,” senior Ryan Reyes, editor, said.

The next components are the costumes and makeup. Dracula would be unrecognizable without his characteristic fangs and cape. Costume department head senior Kendyl Stewart is responsible for bringing horrific sights to life. “The costume department makes sure that the audience doesn’t see any naked actors, no matter how much they may want to. In January, the USDA replaced the
food pyramid with the food plate. The new visual explains how much milk, fruit, grain, vegetable and protein one person should consume in a day. If one follows this guide, he will have a well balanced diet. While fast food restaurants’ websites list the caloric count of their food, people do not regularly check this resulting in excess calories.

By MOLLY WALLACE Either television is too enticing, or America is too lazy. Shockingly, the obesity rate for American teens, ages 12 to 19, is roughly 21 percent, according to The New York Times article “Obesity Rates Hit Plateau in U.S., Data Suggests” (January 2010). How do teens prevent themselves from conforming to this statistic? Simple: a shared view of students says the best way for teens to stay in shape is to use spare time on active things that fit their specific desires. “Teens play a lot of video games and then they don’t work out,” junior Vincent Romero said. “If you have a lot of time on your hands, just use it on sports and active things.” After school, Romero boxes in his friend’s yard and also plays street basketball. He claims this keeps his cardio up enough to keep him in shape. “If you’re in a bad mood, it’s easy

hospitals are full of patients who do not need to be there. Major diseases are directly linked to obesity. You can solve many health problems by eliminating obesity,” HOPE teacher Paul Katauskas said Students can prevent obesity by exercising on a regular basis, and choosing to eat healthy foods filled with protein and nutrients. Eating healthy foods will improve performances in athletics and overall health and fitness. This will lead America into a brighter future with less health problems. According to kidshealth.org, both kids and adolescents are advised to work out at least one hour a day. The NFL Play 60 is the National Football League’s campaign aimed at encouraging kids to be active for 60 minutes a day in to reverse childhood obesity. “I think it is horrible[that people are becoming obese]. Like the Bible says, our ‘body is a temple’ and we should treat it with respect,” junior Ashley Muse said. 5

to take it out in boxing,” Romero said. “Your cardio goes up; plus I have fun. Boxing also helps me get fit.” Senior Kelsie Church worked out on her own, since she wasn’t committed to a school or club sport. Over the summer, Church ran a marathon and now continues to do mile runs sponsored by the Track Shack. “I realized I was lazy and didn’t play sports,” Church said. “It is so easy to slack off when you are young and think you can start [working out] later in your life.” Church is involved in a workout group that is under the instruction of a trainer. She also runs before school with her sister to stay active. “Keep at your own pace with your own time,” Church said. “Workout in your way.” Freshman Victoria Allanson spends her time getting fit by riding horses at Class Act, an Apopka horse range. As a former rower for crew in middle school, when Allanson took on the load of high school, she switched to a more leisurely and desirable way to stay fit. “I want to stay in shape because I don’t want to have a bad figure,”
November 4, 2011
Allanson said. “Plus horseback riding is fun and I want to have that experience.” Allanson stresses that society needs to stay in shape, and again claims that teenagers have either too much time on their hands, or too little. “It’s hard for teens to stay in shape when kids sometimes don’t have time [to work out] and then do other things like watch television or play video games when they do have that time [to work out],” Allanson said. Interacting with animals was key to Allanson’s intrigued interest in horseback riding. Other activities are available outdoors to get one’s self active and in shape. “Florida has lakes, beaches and circuit training at places like Lake Underhill,” former trainer at Planet Fitness Joey Sims said. “Just get out and do activities with your friends.” With obesity rates rising rapidly and technology allowing time to be filled up inside the confinements of one’s home, the desire to stay in shape must be there for teens to change the statistic studies have placed on them. Sims suggests utilizing trainers and workout plans, which he claims can
pinpoint what activity and workload a person needs to get in shape. These options are available at PF Gyms as part of the membership. “I would suggest teens to seek help from a trainer because a lot of people aren’t sure what to do, while a trainer can lead you in the right direction to getting in shape,” Sims said. At Planet Fitness Gyms, trainers are included with a membership, so taking Sims advice becomes an easy task with low stress because there is an enforced no judgment policy there. “A lot of times people don’t come to the gym because they feel insecure, but our judgment free zone is good for that,” Sims said. PF Gyms offer memberships for as low as $15 per month, while 24-Hour Fitness and LA Fitness offers one for $25 and up. The prices for LA Fitness and 24-Hour Fitness can vary based certain advantages, like free classes or free guest passes. Collectively, the best advice from students and trainers is to find what workout suits one best and stick with it.

Students fight obesity statistics
McDonald’s and other fast food restaurants are major contributors leading to obesity. In America, 31 percent of the population suffers from obesity. According to nationmaster. com, the United States has the highest obesity rates in the world. Obesity is when a person’s weight is 20 percent or more above average standards. There are different standards for each body types. Anyone who is more than 100 pounds overweight is morbidly obese. “I think [obesity rates in the future] will keep getting worse and worse. Portions will continue to get bigger and bigger, along with the people eating it,” sophomore Hanna Sekenski said. Celebrities are helping fight and raise awareness of obesity by informing the importance of keeping in shape and eating healthy foods on a regular basis. Michelle Obama developed the campaign “Let’s Move” to try to eliminate childhood obesity. Obama has inspired Wal-Mart to lower prices on fruits and vegetables. Walmart brand
is developing a healthy seal to help customers make the right food choice. Eating fast food is known to show negative effects on students when participating in a sport. “Every day I drink about three gallons of water so I can stay hydrated during football. Keeping a balanced diet provides me with good endurance so during games I don’t get tired,”sophomore Kyle Wilmoth said. Fast foods can have higher levels of sodium which dehydrate or cause nausea to athletes. Not only does one’s performance level decrease, it affects one’s organs negatively too. After the food is digested, it enters the blood stream, circulates to main organs and can clog arteries. Eating unhealthy foods is not the only contributor to increasing obesity rates, according to the article “If Your Kids are awake there probably Online” published on Jan. 10, 2011 from The New York Times, kids ages 8-18 spend 7.5 hours a week on technology related devices. Lack of proper exercise leads to weight gain and obesity. “Because of obesity, American

Males have a higher daily caloric intake than women because they are generally taller and have more muscle. It also includes dairy as a side item. The previous pyramid consisted of milk, meat and beans as additional items. The pyramid has been altered into a plate reducing those components. The plate is an attempt to make it easier for consumers to choose variety per meal, and presents the meal as a whole rather than a hierarchy, shown previously in the pyramid. “The plate is more beneficial because it is a better way to show how much food for each food group you should eat. It makes it easier for kids to understand,” cafeteria manager Holly Isaac said. By JOSH HALLORAN Every morning millions of teenagers receive and closely study text messages and emails telling them what their horoscopes for the day will be. Sophomore Michael Hill revolves his day around what his horoscope reads. Each day he wakes up and plans his day accordingly to what his horoscope has predicted for him. Hill is not alone, over millions of people wake up each and every morning to receive their Horoscopes. Horoscopes play a big part of a person’s day, deciding how the outcome of the day will be. “[Horoscopes] play a big part of my day, if my horoscope isn’t

Hill would rather know someone’s Zodiac sign before he meets them because then he will know more about the person and his personality traits. “When I first read it was spot on, it described me perfectly. My brother showed me a book that described my birthday, and it described me perfectly,” Hill said. As a Pisces, Hill is described as a compassionate, artistic, sensitive and spiritual individual. Hill is known around school as a generous, compassionate, peaceful and a kind individual. People have became familiar with horoscopes, because they appear in different places such as magazines, online social media websites and in newspapers. A basic horoscope is based on a person’s birth month, date and birth year as well as during which of the 12 Zodiac segments the birth occurs. “The concept [of] how it said if you are born under a certain sign, you act this way and have these traits, that intrigued me into following my horoscope daily,” Hill said. Hill is known for telling people their horoscopes from a book he brought to school called What Your Birthday Says About You. The book gives information about horoscopes and describes what a person born on a certain day is like and what they are interested in. Hill reads other students a paragraph about what their birth date says about them. Students were amazed that what they were hearing about themselves
are mystical, and they show why people act the certain way they act. I think it is interesting to look for clues throughout the days. It makes my life like a puzzle,” Hill subscribed to a website called, www.horoscope.com about a year ago. He receives an email and a text message each day to explain his Horoscope. There are over thousands of websites involving horoscopes “I feel that since I started following my horoscope, my life has changed. I have met more friends and have also had more opportunities that have come may way,” Hill said. Based on Hill’s Zodiac sign he has traits that make him assertive and demanding. He likes to get his point across so that people understand where he is coming from. Each night millions of people all around the world go to sleep knowing they will wake up the next day to another horoscope, which could make or break their day.

By ANNA MARIE BORIA Teenagers of today are being exposed to the lives of Hollywood’s elite almost continuously. This kind of exposure is influencing today’s youth in more ways than one. The effects of influential celebrities can be positive as well as beneficial to a young adult’s life, especially if one lacks a positive influence. Seeing how certain stars portray themselves and handle certain situations can inspire a teenager. “I think teenagers look up to celebrities who they feel they have a certain connection to, which inspires teens to be like them in different ways,” sophomore Jalen Harper said. One of those inspire worthy celebrities is four time Grammy award winner Taylor Swift. Swift has donated millions of dollars to charities such as the Red Cross and has received a VH1 Do Something Award in honor of her efforts to the community. She is star girls of all ages can find relatable and one of the few young starlets who goes through the Hollywood spotlight with elegance and poise. “Taylor Swift has inspired everything from my hair to my music choices. I look toward her music for relationship advice and find Taylor Swift relatable because she’s not perfect, but she goes by her own morals and is not influenced by negative things,” junior

By DELANEE BOGAN Sifting through all of the clutter and miscellaneous clothing to discover hidden treasures below retail prices is a hobby for juniors Lauren Keith and Ivy Lane. They acquired the thrift store fever from Keith’s parents. They are two students among other teens who choose to shop at thrift stores instead of department stores. “I think people are choosing to shop at thrift stores because they have cheaper clothes, a larger variety and unique clothing,” sophomore Ryan Classe said. Classe prefers to shop at online stores such as vans.com or pacsun. com rather than shopping at thrift stores. There are at least four thrift stores that are within six miles from the school. One Goodwill location is on East Michigan. Other stores include the Salvation Army on West Colonial Drive, The Village Community Thrift Shop on East Michigan, and the Community Thrift Store in Edgewood. “Thrift stores have both their pros and cons. They have a wide variety of items, all at a consistently low price. But you are never guaranteed you are going to find what you are looking for,” Keith said. Teens are choosing to shop at thrift stores not only to save money, but because of the variety of clothes. It gives teens the opportunity to purchase unique clothing that helps

them express themselves and become individuals, even though it may take trips to different stores to find a specific article of clothing that they are looking for. “I once spent four months looking for a plain black dress at every thrift store I went to, and only succeeded after much frustration. Department stores have the perks of having new clothes and a 99 percent guarantee to find what you want,” Keith said. Keith has found three dresses at Goodwill and paid less than $2 for them. When thrifting, she usually finds plaid shirts, dresses and skirts. Department stores are able to fulfill what one needs. One can choose the brand, color, and size one is looking for, but thrift stores have the advantage of having unique clothing for a low price. Thrift stores not only sell clothes but they also sell phone cases, TVs, movies, childrens’ toys and books. “[Thrifting is] like extreme couponing. I found a brand new pair of Sperrys for $5, and online they were originally $80. I felt really excited after buying them,” Lane said. Thrifting helps teach students how to manage money and learn the true value of a dollar. One can spend $50- 80 on one pair of jeans at Abercrombie and Fitch or spend less than $5 on a pair at a thrift store. “You find unique clothes that you can’t get anywhere else and you get to be one of the few people who can say you own it,” sophomore Xena

Aboudallah said. Having such a variety of items at thrift stores allows one to purchase new clothing periodically. Plato’s Closet located on Colonial Drive takes brand name clothing that is clean, and in style for one third of the original price. After the buyer approves the clothing items; one is paid cash, on the spot. Dechoes, a resale store ,is also located on Colonial Drive. It has been voted best of Orlando for resale and vintage for the past nine years by the Orlando Weekly. When selling an item, the store determines the value and gives one the option of 35 percent cash or 50 percent store credit. At the Community Thrift Store in Edgewood there is a Sale of the Week that is determined by the color of the price tag. The color determines the price of the item. One can get up to 40 percent off at this thrift store. “My biggest advice [to new thrifters] is to be very thorough. Finding good things takes time; you have to sift through all the junk first. Rachel Pierce said. These exceptional traits portrayed by Swift give a positive message to teenagers, unlike the traits portrayed by former Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen. Endless nights of partying, half a dozen stays in drug rehab and multiple arrests have turned this once top paid sitcom actor’s life into one continuous controversy. “Charlie Sheen is a bad influence. A celebrity is someone you should be able to look up to. and doing drugs isn’t something you should do,” freshman Christina Dean said. Living a controversial life can be a positive example to teenagers who may have drifted into an irresponsible path. It can only be true when a celebrity comes back from a troubled time stronger and more focused, which can inspire a teenager to do the same. No story resembles this more than the story of Britney Spears. In 2007, the queen of pop’s breakdown was plastered in the media worldwide. The breakdown caused her to go into rehab, temporarily lose custody of her children and voluntarily lose her hair. By the end of 2008 she cleaned up her act and released two number one records Circus in 2008 and Femme Fatale in 2011 and is now happily engaged. Her journey is inspirational to a number of teenagers. “Britney Spears has influenced me to just be myself and keep going. [She has showed me that] people will say and do harsh things but to keep going with your life and stay positive. Britney had a public meltdown but overcame it and still stayed true to herself,” senior Timothy Rivera said. Aside from influencing fashion and musical choices, celebrities have the power to trend positivity as well as negativity to this generation.

Have food, will travel FOOD TRUCK CRAZE TAKES OVER ORLANDO By MOLLY WALLACE As one walks into the Winter Park Food Truck Stop’s lunch crew, senses go crazy. Fifteen trucks are lined up and ready to serve. Although the lunch crowd is small, the sights and smells are immense and excite one’s senses. It’s wise to get one’s fix earlier in the day because the 5 p.m. crowd brings an incredible number of taste-crazed foodies. The food truck phenomenon has spurred new and creative ideas for on–the-go food, and shows like The Great Food Truck Race on Food Network have landed food trucks in a key position for a 2011-2012 fad. “It’s a neat thing for people to get together with friends, and

it isn’t too costly,” Viveca Arerstedt, owner of SwedeDISH food truck, said. SwedeDISH allows one to head, mouth-first, into the world of food trucks. Arerstedt and her husband run this Swedish inspired truck. They provide the masses with homemade, authentic Swedish dishes like meatballs and mashed potatoes, topped with a tasty gravy ($7.50). “In my case, it’s very hard [to own a food truck] because everything I make is from scratch. I don’t want any shortcuts,” Arerstedt said. The food truck owners pride themselves on ‘from scratch’ food, which could contribute to why the fad has become so popular. Friendly faces, who are making food in front of a crowd tends to be more exciting than sitting in a restaurant, waiting to be served food made by an unknown face. “Higher quality food is found on site at the food trucks,” Tom Waggestad, owner of Gator Country BBQ, said. Thursday nights are when people gather at the Winter Park Food Truck Stop on Orlando Avenue. With live
music, a bustling crowd of foodies start their mission to find the newest, tastiest creations. The excitement is being able to walk around, share the different styles of food with friends or family and be a part of a new-aged food culture. “If you go with your friends you can all sit around in your cars in the parking lot and eat and hang out. It’s really friendly and that sets it apart from a building,” junior Timothy Hamilton said. Another aspect about food truck events is their adaptability. On one side of the pod is Gator Country BBQ, serving gator as burgers or just plain, with prices ranging from $7 - $9. On another side is The Winter Park Fish Company, serving fresh and fried seafood. And in the middle you can find Kona Dog, creating a new spin on the art of hotdog eating. Scattered chairs, tables, couches and benches allow guests to feel like they are at a family cookout. With the variety of food, comes the variety of meal choices. is a plethora of dinner items as well as dessert items. Lisa Mato, owner of The Crepe Company food truck, describes events like these as a food truck tapas party, a place where people share smaller portions of food amongst each other. For the sweet-fiends, Fork In The Road offers a walnut ice cream sundae for $5, and the Crepe Company offers s’mores crepes, strawberries and cream cheese crepes, as well as candy apple crepes. The crepes, made in plain view by Mato, are big in their portion size and worth the $5. No matter what is sold, there has to be a love for food by both customers and food truck owners. “This is my restaurant; this is where my favorite food is made,” Mato said. Hamilton suggests one should know that every truck offers a different take on the classics, like La Empanada does by stuffing empanada dough with known food such as barbeque chicken. The Food Truck pod at Winter Park held true to that, bringing 15 different aromas and menus to the scene for a massive group of grub-seekers.

Hazing causes e g a m Da By MARK VAGELAKOS The 21st century has brought light to academic hazing, a practice previously thought to be inconsequential that was kept behind closed doors and behind the law. Incidents of hazing at Florida A&M University, specifically when student Robert Champion was killed after a marching band show, have reignited the issue many think is harmless. Legislation is arising to prevent future hazing incidents and future deaths. California law now defines hazing and punishes it after an incident at California Polytechnic State University on Dec. 1, 2008. Sigma Alpha Epsilon pledge Carson Starkey died from alcohol poisoning during an initiation where he was told to drink various alcoholic beverages from a brown bag. Afterward, his blood alcohol level was .44. His parents are suing to force every fraternity to list its infractions. Before Carson pledged, they checked college and fraternity websites for previous infractions but did not find anything negative even though the fraternity had been suspended the year before for underage drinking. Orange County Public Schools has a zero tolerance policy on hazing, an attitude shared by football coach Phil Ziglar. “I don’t [understand] beating a child. I don’t see making a child feel embarrassed. To me, it’s the most demeaning thing

family bonding. “The family is so much more together. We always know what’s going on,” Tsirigotis said. “Have you ever seen Big Fat Greek Wedding? It’s kind of like that.” In another aspect, students like senior Marilyn Roy, offer an interesting cultural taste, but claim to be more Americanized. Roy’s family is from Germany; her grandpa moved the family to America after his years as a Nazi official. “My grandpa was forced to be a Nazi soldier, although he tells me all the time he didn’t want to,” Roy said. “It was just part of the country’s doings at the time.” All of Roy’s family lives in America now, but they still enjoy certain German ideas. Roy has been to big family gatherings celebrating Oktoberfest, when she was in elementary school, which relive the marriage of Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen, but in the past few years, her family has not celebrated this. Things such as the food they eat, like shweinshaxe (a chunk of pork served with fried potatoes) and the holiday traditions they experience with family, like a family game of croquet on Easter and Christmas, are still practiced. “Things like Christmas trees and gingerbread house making came from Germany, and of course we do that,” Roy said. “My grandpa, Leslie Doll, loves making gingerbread with all of us around Christmas time.” Roy has been influenced significantly by Europe’s positive views on outside activity and their willingness to engage in activities regularly, like soccer. “I like the athletics in Germany. They care a lot about being outside and my parents and grandpa have influenced me on that,” Roy said. Roy describes the attitudes on food. People and landscape as one would describe Texas: “Everything is bigger in Texas.” The food, especially pork and potatoes, a common food for Roy, is served in huge portions. In photographs her grandfather has shown her, she claims to see plenty of big mountains and hefty people. Pictures of her family and grandpa in Germany provide her with some knowledge of the landscape, government institutions and education, but her first visit will be this summer, where she can get a full taste of her family’s past. Both Tsirigotis and Roy claim that America has provided them with a more modern, and beneficial way of life. Neither feels deprived because of their European culture, but use it as a way to keep traditions flowing from one country to another.

By COOPER BROCK An opinionated, yet soft spoken girl, one wouldn’t guess that junior Shaffaq Noors’ origins are from a small village in northern Pakistan. Her village, located in a valley between the Himalayas and China, and next to Afghanistan, is where Noor spent the first seven years of her life. “It is prettier there, closer to nature,” Noor said. “The people are nicer, just friendly without reserve.“ Noor moved to the United States for a better education with her parents, brother and sister when she was seven, knowing little English or anything about American culture. “[It was difficult when I first came here,] the language barrier was
paper. “I didn’t make a big deal out of it. People around me were flipping out, but I was not going to get angry over such a little thing,” Noor said. “[People] would just joke about the whole terrorist thing and I did not take it personally. People will do anything for attention, so I just let them make themselves look stupid.” Now 17-years-old, Noor has not returned to Pakistan in 10 years. Although not in Pakistan, Noor and her family still practice Islam, and observe all Islamic holidays. “[An Islam custom we practice is] Eid. It is a celebration after we fast,” Noor said. “I love that, fasting. It teaches you patience and self control.” In the Islam religion, fasting is the

a problem, but I was in elementary school, so it wasn’t crippling. I just learned it from the people around me,” Noor said. “The whole culture [of Pakistan is different from that of the United States]. The way that we live, the way that we dress, the way we act. We wear Shalwar Kaeez [Long, robe-like dresses]. North Pakistan is a lot more modest, and the people are quieter, more welcoming and more humble.” Cultural adversity was a problem for Noor: being Islamic, and being from the Central Asia caused people to treat her differently, even from an early age. When you don’t eat at certain hours, you start to appreciate food more. You appreciate everything more.” Noor is undecided on whether she plans to return to Pakistan after she graduates. “It’s much easier over there, you don’t have a daily routine. My village is pretty remote,” Noor said. “There isn’t much political conflict in the village where I am from.”

television. According to Tsirigotis, the “Greek God” myths are not as stressed in the country as some might stereotype. And Tsirigotis claims that those living in Greece are not all good looking, like some might think, but they are purely Greek. “There’s only one race there. Everybody is Greek,” Tsirigotis said. “A person who isn’t Greek sticks out like a sore thumb.” Although the government recently insisted on a $172 billion bailout and the economy is in bad condition, the traditions are strong. For example, those living in Greece, and also Tsirigotis’ family in America, still perform certain customs on holidays. Due to a tradition of eating lamb on Easter, Tsirigotis’ family celebrates something Greeks have done for years. “On Easter we kill a lamb and cook it in our yard, and after we season it. Some people might think it’s weird, but it’s tradition,” Tsirigotis said. Another Greek custom is spitting on each other to spur the devil away after dinner, commonly done by Greek children. Tsirigotis and his family, whilst living in America no longer practice this, but customs such as these and food like pita bread, gyros, oregano and souvlaki (similar to a shish kabob), keep the Greek way of life going and the

European culture travels
By MOLLY WALLACE With over 50 independent nations, Europe offers a culture of it’s own. From their seas to the United States’ seas, Europe provides different foods, music and fashion, linking one country to the other. The differences, though, are plentiful for kids living in America with a European background. Junior Dimitri Tsirigotis’ family is Greek; his father previously lived in Greece and his grandparents still reside in Sparta allowing him to visit his grandparent’s house, and a different culture, periodically. “I go there four times a year,” Tsirigotis said. “It’s really mountainous there. They are more free there and a lot more laid back.” According to Tsirigotis, Greece provides a more plentiful landscape, filled with farmland but less police and governmental institutions that one might see in America. The time it takes, due to its mountainous landscape, to travel from city to city is consuming. The education system is more laid back in Greece, Tsirigotis claims; there is a greater focus on well-rounded minds, indulging kids in art or music classes. He also states that America is far more modern, with easily accessible computers and

good fortune,” Zhang said. Preparing for Chinese New Year requires people to take weeks off of work to prepare for the holiday. Both men and women receive haircuts before the New Year, believing it will deliver good fortune and if not cut, bring them bad luck. “My family, mainly my mom and I, make dumplings [for Chinese New Year but since] my family is really westernized, we don’t really practice the traditions,” Zhang said. South of China, having a population of 86.9 million, freshman Huong Dang left Vietnam when she was eight years old. “In Vietnam, there is a vibrant atmosphere. Vietnam is hotter [than Florida]. In the evening people [will] crowd around downtown and there [are] food carts everywhere selling soy milk or fried rice,” Dang said. Accompanying their vibrant atmosphere, Vietnam’s lively festival, Tet, means the first morning of the first day of the new year and lasts for three days. Cleaning is frowned upon during Tet, in fear that families will sweep out
the good luck. Traditional foods such as earth cake, a square cake made with rice beans and pork, and several different desserts made with coconut are offered during the festivities. Like Chinese New Year, Tet honors the year of the dragon, celebrated on January 23. With both China and Vietnam celebrating New Years for good fortune, they both have a strong link to the Confucian philosophy. Children are educated to respect their elders and value education. “My family believes that school should be well disciplined. In China, our school was the most important aspect of our lives. We didn’t have time to hangout with friends because we had a lot of homework to do. American education is very liberal [because] we get to choose what classes we want to take,” Zhang said. Unlike students in American schools, who are only required to go five times a week, in China, children attend school six days a week from early morning, about 7 a.m., to at least 4 p.m. Even though all children are able to go to primary school and middle school for
free, parents are still required to pay for uniforms and books. If the child intends on furthering his education, parents must pay for public high school. “[My family came to America] in search of better living conditions. We were in poverty. [Our house was] very old, the paint was chipped and there were seven people living in one house [with] one bathroom and no air conditioning. [My parents] hope [by coming to America] that I’ll get into a better college and [find] a good job here,” Dang said. Along with putting education as a priority, stereotypes develop toward Zhang and Dang, labeling them as smart because they are Asian. But despite the stereotypes, both Dang’s and Zhang’s cultures have influenced their ways of life. “I hear people say that I get good grades because I’m Asian, [but] success can only be achieved through hard work. [That’s what my culture has] taught me, to do the best I can to succeed and to value education,” Zhang said.
By RUBEN CARRILLO In the war stricken country of Sudan death is everywhere. The people are in distress and need help. The United Nations picks families in Africa who are healthy enough to move to America, to come to the “Land of the Free.” “It wasn’t the most peaceful place, but was really simple. People weren’t concerned about superficial materials. [We] lived on a day-to-day basis,” junior Weng Ruach said. Ruach was 7-years-old when the UN picked him and his family to move to America. Ruach came with his mother, father and little sister. His extended family is still in Africa. He has not seen them in 11 years. Even after witnessing such horrors, Ruach keeps an open mind. “[Your opinion of Africa] really depends on what your comfort level is. [For example] lot of people say ‘Don’t go to Parramore it is a horrible place’, [but] there are different parts you can go to,” Ruach said. Despite the poverty, Ruach believes parts of Africa like South Africa are

beautiful. “I plan on going back [to Africa] after graduating from college to see what good I can do with my degree,” Ruach said. In comparison, the education in Africa is very different. America provides a free education. In Africa, there are more private schools with uniforms and hundreds of children walk two miles to attend school. Ruach believes people in Africa are more patriotic because there is more nationalism in Africa. “Everyone in America says ‘Oh we’re Americans’, but it is just something that people say. It is not like they really care [about being] American. I guess it is because they have never really had a sense of freedom. We [Africans] don’t take things for granted,” Ruach said. Rosalie Creighton, Anatomy and Physiology teacher, grew up in Poloqwane, South Africa and attended an English speaking elementary. Creighton’s life appeared to be similar to an average American child’s, but differences existed. “We spoke the language called
Afrikaans at home. After school I played netban, field hockey, swam and did gymnastics. We did not have TV and [I] remember listening to the radio at night. We had wild animal reserves all around the town where there were lots of giraffes, zebra, buck and even rhinos roaming around. We also had monkeys that would steal our food from time to time,” Creighton said. In Creighton’s childhood, South Africa suffered major racial segregation. The white population lived in towns and surrounding farms, while blacks were confined to crowded all black neighborhoods. However, the nonwhites were allowed into towns with passes during the day for working purposes only. All of the schools, buses and certain public areas were segregated. “At the time I was growing up, South Africa was banned from all international sporting competitions because of the apartheid policy. Since my swimming times were fast enough to make the finals at the Olympic Games, my dreams of ever participating were crushed. I had to settle with swimming in the USA on a full scholarship to Indiana University,
page 15
where I became Big Ten Champion and record holder,” Creighton said. Contrasting the culture of Ruach’s Sudan, South African culture is similar to British culture because it was a British colony until 1961. South Africa celebrates Boxing Day and adores the royal family. In regard to culinary differences, Creighton’s favorite food from South Africa is Boerewors and Biltong. Boerewors is a type of sausage and Biltong is dried meat, almost like beef jerky but made from zebra or eland meat. “[The thing I miss most] is the African bush and animals, the sounds of birds and animals. The stars are so different in the Southern Hemisphere. I also miss my family that still lives in South Africa,” Creighton said. While Ruach and Creighton similarly both miss their families still residing in Africa they have adopted to an American life.
Student, teacher love African culture
By LIA VILLAR Not knowing the traditions or influences the United States is built upon can create barriers for numerous immigrating families. Junior ShuTong Zhang experienced barriers after leaving the populous country of 1.3 billion people in China and coming to the United States. His way of life changed drastically as he adjusted to American values and an increased emphasis on pop culture. “I was 10-years-old when I left China. My home country is very big and it’s crowded, very populous. We have a really ancient history and also we have a lot of traditions and festivals. China has a lot more tradition influencing us than pop culture,” Zhang said. Above of all other traditions, the brilliant environment of Chinese New Year is filled with colors of red and gold and is a tremendous celebration in China. “Chinese New Year is the most important holiday of the year.

By MARK VAGELAKOS In the modern day, it is an unfortunate necessity for donors to check into the background, employee salaries and even the tax files of charities one contributes to. In the shadows of such vague and complicated bureaucracy, micro lending websites like kiva.org, a non profit that relies on donations and loans, simplify the charity process by acting as only a conduit between good hearted lenders and disadvantaged entrepreneurs. The best part about this good act is that Good Samaritans get their money back. Micro lending provides a way for anyone around the world to lend to international entrepreneurs, usually in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe, whose country either does not have the capability of setting up large lending institutions or discriminates heavily against them. For this reason, micro lending is especially useful for women who are often seen as less than equal to men in business capabilities. Of those receiving loans on kiva.org, 80 percent are women. While there is a chance that lenders will not give the money back, kiva.org currently boasts a 98.9 percent repayment rate from the $309,323,800 they have lent. Once entrepreneurs set up their profile, either by themselves or more often through a third party mission group, lenders can provide loans anywhere from $20 to the full amount needed. The entrepreneurs then follow a repayment plan, usually over a year or more. Their repayment determines the possibility for future loans.

It’s an awesome feeling, knowing that you’ve just helped an organization start relaying and fundraising.” Apart from raising funds for cancer research, Relay is geared towards celebrating those who have beaten the disease, remembering those who have lost their battles with cancer, and encouraging those who are still fighting their battle with the disease. While participants will be walking the track, food and drink will be sold, and several club games and activities will be held throughout the night. A car smashing will be active on the football field, where people pay to smash an old junkyard car with a myriad of tools; ranging from baseball bats, to sledge hammers. All proceeds from fundraising, concessions and activities will go towards the American Cancer Society to help fund cancer research. After the sun goes down, a luminaria
ceremony is held, where candles are placed inside paper bags decorated to commemorate someone who has been affected by cancer. Participants walk a silent lap taken to honor the memory of those who have been lost, and the tributes are rearranged in the bleachers to spell out “HOPE.” “Relay has given me the opportunity to connect with the other cancer survivors in the community,” senior Samantha Kinser said. “It has also given me a chance to raise money for a very important cause and organize an event to celebrate the survivor’s success in their battle against cancer.” Kinser, who initially started participating in Relay through Key Club, was diagnosed with skin cancer in March of 2010. After undergoing three surgeries, one in March, and two in May, Kinser had conquered her illness, and walked the survivor lap. “Relay means the world to me. A lot of my family and friends have been affected by cancer and participating in Relay is my way of remembering and honoring them and their struggle,” Kinser said.

By LIZZY GORDON Every three seconds, someone dies of hunger; that equals 16,000 people a day. To make a difference, students can partner with Change This World. CTW is a local nonprofit organization that’s mission is to end world hunger. A quarter is relatively small on the money scale, but with the help of CTW, a quarter is life changing. A quarter provides a meal for a person suffering from malnutrition and starvation in Botswana, Haiti, Jamaica, Burundi, Peru, Honduras or Thailand. “It is very empowering to know it is this simple to make a difference. The world produces enough food to feed every person 2700 calories per day. To some, the fact is frustrating, but to me it is inspiring. Change is possible,” volunteer coordinator Meaghan Crump said. One meal includes soybeans, white long grained rice, vitamin fortified soy, a dehydrated blend of six vegetables, vitamins and mineral powder. According to the World Health Organization hunger and malnutrition currently affect one in six people on the planet. Nearly 1 billion people are malnourished. Since 2009, CTW has packaged 4.6 million meals, the total keeps rising as people continue to donate. Every penny of the 25 cents is broken down. on how many parents are present. A single parent has to volunteer 300 hours; a two-parent household must complete 500 hours. People can meet these hours by helping build their own homes, a neighbor’s home and by working at the Habitat headquarters. “Because I have a full time job here at Boone, I really only worked on two houses, mine and another family’s home for about the same amount of time,” Quinones said. According to the Proclamation of the City of Orlando, 600 women spent 5,000 hours building 12 homes during the 2010 and 2011 Women Build Week. Last year 24 houses were built in all, volunteers are always needed. “The issue of housing affects everyone. Houses give you a sense of stability; families that apply tend to move a lot due to financial issues. By ANNA MARIE BORIA As the girl opens the box, a smile streams across her face and screams a cry of joy. It was not a toy or a brand new pair of shoes but only a bar of soap. To her, the soap bar can save her life. Clean the World is a non-profit organization based in Downtown Orlando. This organization began when Clean the World’s president and cofounder Paul Till researched online and discovered that medical research shows the top two killers in children under the age of five are pneumonia and cholera, and learned that 60 percent of those diseases can be prevented through regular hand washing. Hotels in America alone throw away one million bars of soap each day, this is why Clean the World has partnered with 1,300 hotels in the past three years. In the partnership, hotels give their used soap to Clean the World. Clean the World recycles it, then gives it to countries where it is desperately needed as well as to people who need it
in our own community. “When I leave a hotel I take that last look in the shower and [I would] see that bar of soap left. You really can’t pack a bar of soap like you can the shampoos and thought it to be such a waste [to throw away]. So, I thought this organization really had a simple solution,” Nichole Gordon, a local advocate for Clean the World, said. The process of recycling the soap begins with surface cleaning, which volunteers do at Clean the World headquarters. The sanitizing process uses an eco-friendly, germ-fighting solution and then rebatches recycled bars into new bars of soap. With the help of a soap press, a machine compacts bars together; it is able to produce 80,000 soap bars per day. “[What caught my attention about this organization is] the fact that they are utilizing what people are throwing away and making good use out of it,” sophomore Elizabeth Gordon, who has

volunteered, said. Clean the World sends soap to more than 45 different countries including Albania, Armenia, Bolivia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Suriname. “In 10 years, I’d like to see us capture at least 50 percent of the global hospitality market and, by doing so, change the way the hospitality industry deals with hotel waste,” Matt Gomez, Clean the World marketing and communications director, said. Clean the World has multiple ways in which a person can help. People can text CLEAN to 20222 to donate $10, visit Change the World’s offices to volunteer; they are located at 400 A Pittman St., Orlando, FL 32801 or hold a soap drive. For more information, visit www.cleantheworld.org. “If you want to be a part of something bigger than you and make an impact in someone’s life [this is the organization to be apart of],” freshman Grayson Gordon said.

By LIZZY GORDON A house is not simply a place to live; it is a fortress where people find comfort and security. Families find themselves living impoverished houses and neighborhoods. Families tend to lose their sense of safety; but Habitat for Humanity helps restore their lives Since 1976, Habitat has been seeking to prevent poverty housing. With the support of local companies, the non-profit organization, has built more than 200,000 houses worldwide, as well as provide 1 million people with safe, decent, affordable shelter. “I applied because I am a single parent. [My daughter] was born with Spinal Bifida and is wheel chair bound. It has been a mission to find an affordable, wheel chair accessible place to live, and also I wanted to ensure that she would always have a place to call home,” Guidance clerk Ileana Quinones said. Habitat does not give anyone a home. To receive a home, a family must attend orientation, send in a completed application, and then Habitat will look through finances to ensure that the family is capable of reimbursing them. Families can only be approved if they meet qualifications and agree with something called sweat equity. Sweat Equity is when a parent of the household volunteers with Habitat for Humanity. Endangered wildlife seeks help FLORIDA IS HOME TO 56 ENDANGERED ANIMALS By DELANEE BOGAN Drowning from being trapped inside large nets owned by longline fisheries, the leatherback turtle is an endangered species in Florida. This animal is declining not only due to the fisheries but also due to destruction of its habitat. The world is home to nearly 1.7 million animal species and 500 of these animals are endangered, meaning they are at the risk of extinction. Numbers of endangered animals are increasing every year. Without these animals, the earth’s natural balance will be destroyed, and there will be rapid climate changes which will impact everyone negatively. Florida alone has 56 threatened and endangered animal’s. If people do not take action, Floridians will see changes in the animals they see on a day-to-day basis. “It is disgusting how we let the pure number [of endangered animals] get that high. It is outrageous that we are destroying Florida’s naturally beautiful ecosystem,” sophomore Joseph Johnson said. Classified as an endangered species by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1967, the Florida Panther is threatened due to destruction of its habitat, genetic defects caused by extensive inbreeding, and collisions with automobiles. In 1996, the population was 30-50 panthers, but because of the Genetic Restoration Program, the wild range is now estimated to be 50-70 panthers. “[Everyone] should know that one day all of the animals that we think are cool and observe are not going to be there anymore. [The amount of endangered animals] is affecting our environment and it will eventually come back to hurt us,” freshman Ramon Alejo said. The Florida manatee is also on Florida’s endangered species list. This animal is on the list because of careless boaters who do not look out or slow down for the manatees. SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment has helped ill injured and orphaned animals for the past 45 years. They help any animal that is in need of assistance. Over 20,000 animals have been rescued by the rescue team, which is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. SeaWorld rescued 19 manatees and released 16 back into the wild last year. With an attempt to take the manatees off the endangered species list, the government has created idle speed zones to reduce the amount of manatees injured and killed by boat propellers. The government has also created sanctuaries so the manatees cannot be harassed, hunted or captured. Homosassa Springs, located in Homosassa, is one place where students can observe and interact with this endangered species. Freshman Alexandra Freel visited the park last year. “[Homosassa Springs] is quite interesting. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know about manatees. I learned what their habitat has to be like and that they mostly eat lettuce. The people that work there let my mom and I throw heads of Romaine into the spring,” Freel said. At Homosassa Springs, there is an adopt-a-manatee program. To adopt a manatee one can pay $25 to contribute to saving manatees. With adoption, one receives an official certificate, official club newsletter, a full color photo and a biography of a real manatee. The Florida gopher tortoise is another species threatened due to the destruction of its habitat. They share burrows with rattlesnakes, and are often killed accidentally by hunters which are trying to kill the rattlesnakes. The Florida law prohibits intentional killing or wounding of this animal. To get involved and help donate to save endangered

animals one can go online to worldwildlife.org. This website helps protect endangered animals by accepting monthly donations that support the World Wildlife Fund’s Global Conservation Efforts. Another way to help is the Adopt-a-Bird program at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey, located in Maitland. One bald Eagle costs $3,000 to rehabilitate. This “adoption” includes annual investments in the care, medical treatment, and feeding of one’s bird. The donations help other species as well as contribute to educational programs that help spread awareness of the endangered animals in Florida. Although the bald eagle was removed from the threatened and endangered species list in 2007, it still remains under protection of state and federal laws. The horseshoe crabs in south Florida are on the brink of extinction. They are endangered because their blood is used for testing human pathogens in human blood, tissues, and for creating intravenous drugs. They are crucial to the
environment because their eggs provide food for birds. “[Endangered animals] lives should be valued. If there are small amounts left, they should be preserved. These animals are here for a reason,” Freel said. The American alligator, located in the FL everglades, is on the endangered animals list. It is endangered due to pollution, and because of hunters killing them. The local non profit organization, Back to Nature has been open since 2007 and its main goal is focused on saving Central Florida’s native wildlife. They do this by helping rehabilitate them at their center. BTN has over 50 permanent residents and will take any animals that is orphaned or injured and help nurse them back to health then release them back into the wild. To help volunteer visit their website at www. btn-wildlife.org. “[While volunteering at Back to Nature I have learned] so many things. I have more respect for what animals go through with humans,” Bonnie Westvreld, office manager said.
