IF this is the case, then please accept the following resume for your review and consideration for the position of an intern for the summer of 2012. As a current student who is interested in this field, I have had past experiences of writing, and taking constructive criticisms effectively as interacting well with numerous amounts of people. I also had to learn how to manage an urgent deadline and photo various events. All of these qualities have helped me in other aspects of my life, outside publications, including other clubs in which I have of leadership roles. I enjoy working closely with people and can work well in-group settings with delegated tasks assigned and can reinforce the leadership role myself if need be. I have grown up in the field and know what this job entails and how much time and energy would be needed. Having the knowledge and insight will help me and I will be willing to accept the workload. Although the accompanying resume illustrates my background well, I feel a personal interview would better demonstrate my knowledge and abilities. personal essay
Journalism has been a very strong influence for me over my high school career. I have always respected the ‘art’ of journalism, what it entails and how it provides information to society. I joined journalism on accident by dropping TV Production. I thought at the beginning that I wouldn’t like it as much as I did. I ended up loving the course and decided to interview for a staffer position the following year. In order to succeed as a staffer, I had to make checklists to keep myself on track and try to not fall too far behind in deadlines. I liked to talk a lot which didn’t help the cause. Those helped quite well because of the accomplished feeling of checking the box that something was done and I could move on to the next item. This year especially, I have contributed an entire section to the book. I have designed layouts for profile and multi-coverage page, secondary coverage themes and placing a ton of mug shots, multiple times. Although I made a few mistakes as far as placing goes, it’s a tedious task that has to be done but once it was completed, I was very proud of the work I had designed and how it turned out. My future plans as far as journalism goes may sadly be coming to an end as I hope to pursue event planning as my future career. Even though it has made quite an impact on me in the past 3 years, I will always remember the work completed and the pages I spent hours trying to perfect. However it does not match how I see my years ahead pan out.
self-analytical essay
This year especially I have learned so many new things about design, layouts, leadership and just about yearbook in general. I was nervous about starting the new year as editor because I felt that I lacked the design skills necessary to make my section adequate enough. However since my section is mostly mug shots, so I became more at ease. As well as the fact that I had the previous People Editor to learn from. Learning how to place the pictures themselves was a learning experience for me alone. Just seeing how all of those pictures are laid out and placed was really interesting to me for some reason. I guess because a lot of students see that as their primary reason the buy a book is to see everyone’s picture. And the fact that that was my job was utterly terrifying. I did make mistakes but with the help of others, was able to correct them. The amount of time I spent either in the yearbook room or simply working on my deadlines should show my dedication and work ethic. I have late arrival and yet I woke up early because the extra 2 periods really helped me get more work done in a day then if I didn’t have that time. We learned early on what it takes to sell books to our student body and time and energy it takes to get the books sold. Hopefully the next staff will take this year’s difficulties into consideration and it will be easier on them.

reflection 1
The underclass section was the largest chunk of mug shots that I had to place, making it my most significant work. This section wasn’t necessarily difficult but very tedious in the fact that I had to do it twice. I am very proud of this section as a whole and how everything was designed. It took some moving around and some redesigns of the ‘That Awkward Moment When’ as well as ‘Gotchas’. As I went through this I learned that I should have paid a much closer attention to the names from the start and had Christie double check that no name was missing between the CD list of names and what I had placed. I think this section turned out great. I though that the new idea of having the ‘That Awkward Moment When’ was new and fresh. Rather than doing the ‘5 Things’ as we had just done last year. Hopefully people will enjoy those as well as my section as a whole.

This piece was one of the first deadlines so it had a different design mind set. We had originally thought that we were doing the clean cut look with text eating in to pictures and captions. This shipped after we had switched theme designs so I never had a chance to go back and fix this to match what we have now. I do like the multi coverage look because there’s more opportunity to picture more people, I just wish I could have made it mirror what is in the rest of my section.
reflection 3
I am really proud of these pictures that I took. I was never really that good at taking sports pictures because I could never adjust the camera properly to get the right picture or a clear one for that matter. I think these pictures have great quality and they are in focus with a center of visual interest. The lines that run across the mat can be taken as leading lines that guide the readers eyes across the picture. These pictures show great action and show David’s face making him ‘identifiable’.
reflection 4
I feel as that I was an asset to the staff more so this year than last. I held the position of people editor and developed and designed layouts and secondary coverage for my pages. I held a leadership role and assisted the staffers in any way that I could. During stressful deadlines, I would come in early during first and second period to use the extra time to work on my pages. This time really helped me get ahead or just stay on track in general especially when there were mistakes to be corrected. This demonstrated my commitment to the staff and showed how much of my time really did go into my section.
reflection 5
My biggest hardship that I faced this year was when I was working on the underclass section and I skipped a person, twice. I had to replace a majority of the pictures when we were in proofs and it was one of the most stressful times this year. I learned that I should have been more insightful and triple checked the names from the beginning before placing them. What this can teach me for future references is that when there is a long tedious task ahead, be sure to get the steps preceding correct or else it can be all down hill from there. I feel like I handled it well. Honestly, I had no time to show any emotions since we were in proofs. I just came in early and fixed everything I could. Luckily a lot of the editors helped me which was so awesome and I am still very appreciative of them.
reflection 6
For my exam, I answered for my biggest weakness as being not having enough self confidence in my work and what I do. I do have a lot of ideas in my head but I never speak up about them. This year was the year when I could speak up because if I didn’t like something, and it was going in my section, I needed to say something about it. I feel that I have improved and I feel like because of this course, Ill know to trust in my ideas and don’t be discouraged if they are not used or taken. Just save them for another time.

Hands covered in chalk as dust flew around the classroom, sophomore Willow Cheek created her next project. In Drawing I, students contemplated the possibilities for the next art assignment they would create. From a young age, Cheek had always had an interest in the arts, specifically in drawing. “Art was always my favorite class and I’ve always done well in it since I was about 10,” Cheek said. “When I was little, my mom used to paint a lot; a lot of people in my family are artistic.” As a hobby, Cheek drew in her free time, but also at school where she utilized a class period to do just that. Artwork became another way for Cheek to express herself both at home and at school. “Drawing is probably my favorite, but I also like painting, ceramics and music,” Cheek said. “[The best thing about art is] the ability it gives you to convey emotion and symbolism through color and imagery rather than words.” Cheek displayed her thoughts through her artwork without having to write them down; it allowed her to speak volumes without saying anything. “[Art] helps me to express ideas that I can’t express in words,” Cheek said. Cheek’s preferred mediums ranged from oil pastels, watercolor, colored pencils, tempera paint, henna and chalk. Although her main focus was drawing, Cheek attempted to broaden her skills by working on different projects dealing with these mediums. “I wish I was better at watercolor, pen and ink. [They] are harder to control than other mediums,” Cheek said. “Drawing offers a lot of mediums and variety in the techniques you can use.” The average piece of art took up to two weeks to finalize, but Cheek liked to put in extra time and effort to get the result she wanted, one that she would be proud of. “I keep working on a piece until I’m satisfied. I’m always really critical [of myself and] of what I’m doing,” Cheek said. Cheek planned to keep drawing as a hobby, but was also interested in going into Advanced Placement [Studio] Art in the future. “This would be a great opportunity to get into an art school,” art teacher Nicole Moitoza said. y34, y35, y36 - I chose these spreads to display the multi-coverage stories and the secondary coverages. These layouts also show the differences between underclass, faculty and senior sections and the different coverages that are displayed throughout each. I incorporated different factors like ‘Gotchas’, ‘That Awkward Moment When’ and quote pages. All of these tie together in the end.

My portfolio last year was awful. Although this years may seem simple, I enjoy the simple, clean and fresh look that this gives. This year has more of a style and theme that could be considered to be carrying through. Last year all I had to do was command D and coffee stain and place the reflection number inside the stain. Now I know these designs may not be that intense or anything, I like the clean look and how it carries through. My writing has definitely improved and I have more of a grip of what a full year of yearbook actually feels like. Being an editor has given me the opportunity to understand what it means to have to carry your section because if your staffers don’t know what’s going on their page, you will have to do it in the end resulting in the possibility of an immense amount of responsibility and time management.
