Personal Essay

Throughout middle school my favorite subject was English. I was always intrigued by yearbook club but I never joined. In my 8th grade year I was told the requirement to get in yearbook in high school was to take journalism 1. So at the end of the year when we signed up for classes I chose journalism as my first choice elective. In journalism we learned a myriad of things; how to use InDesign, Photoshop, and other computer programs. We were taught how to write news, sports, and personal stories. We interviewed people for out stories and did a lot of research. After taking a year of journalism and dabbling into the yearbook and newspaper courses, I made my desicion that would be doing yearbook the following year. As a newbie on staff I was unaware of the amount of work and effort that was involved in the yearbook class. Along with writing a story (or more than one) and finding or taking at least 7 pictures, one had to interview approximately 10 (or more) people per page. All of this work overwhelmed me and I thought I couldn’t take it anymore. I tried to get out of the class but unfortunately I couldn’t. I learned I had to deal with what I signed up for and that was that. After acknowledging the fact I couldn’t quit, I started working harder and managing my time. I did better on some pages throughout the rest of the year. Overall I learned to succeed in yearbook one has to be 110% committed. Dedication is the epitome of success.

Self analytical evaluation

In this year of taking yearbook I have learned so much. The most useful of all the things I’ve learned would be time management. In class we have deadlines and within the deadlines we have due dates for every little thing (when pictures, captions and body copy is due). if one doesn’t meet the due dates within the deadline, its very hard to meet deadline. This is where time management comes into play. This skill is vital in almost every task done in life. Things need to be done on time. I’ve learned that when I have something due, I need to make a to-do list and stick to it. I need to stay on task and do my necessary tasks on a daily basis. Along with time management, I learned how to divide up work between two people. On a few deadlines I split the page with a partner. On the first deadline, my partner and I didn’t split up the work evenly and worked on everything together. That resulted in being behind and missing deadline. The next time I had a partner we decided the work evenly and met deadline. I believe teamwork and time management are two important skills I learned in yearbook that I can utilize throughout the rest of my life.

Reflection #1

For Deadline three, I was to do a page on helping others off campus. There were five clubs I had to cover for the page. At first, I was terrified. I thought the page was going to be so hard, overing five different clubs and trying to get pictures of each club. Surprisingly, this deadline was well organized. I interviewed all the people for my stories first, which put me ahead. Then I wrote the stories and got my pictures organized. For clubs I didn’t have pictures for, I planned dates for when I would go take pictures. I thought I did really well on this deadline because I did everything by myself. Although I did not make deadline, I was very proud of myself for the hard work I did.

Reflection #2

For deadline five, I did a page on a boy who flies planes. This page was very easy because it was only one page instead of a double-page spread. Also, it was about one person, not a lot of different people. Although the page was easy, I feel as though I could improve this page. Instead of getting a picture from the boy, I could have gone to the airport with him and took pictures of him. Unfortunately, my page was not printed in the yearbook due to complications and miscommunications. I am still proud of my work and the page overall.

Reflection #3

I am proud of this picture I took. During deadline three I had to take pictures of the Best Buddies Club. I took this picture and thought it was really good. I like the way the two girls are looking at each other acknowledging them. In this photo they are writing notes back and forth due to the one girl being hard of hearing.

Reflection #4

I believe I was a semi-asset to the yearbook staff. Although I was behind on most of the deadlines and I procrastinate, I did most of my work and wasn’t a 100% slacker. Although I say I was an asset, I believe I could’ve worked way harder to contribute my full abilities to the staff. I could have spent more of my time on my pages instead of letting them go once I missed a due date. My commitment grew as the class went on. First deadline didn’t include much commitment at all and entailed a lock of lacking and procrastination. Throughout the next few deadlines my commitment level raised and I got a lot more work done. Unfortunately I became less committed as the year ended. If I could do it all over again I would definitely have been a better asset to the 2011 Legend.

Reflection #5

This year, I faced a major hardship. Coming into yearbook, I guess I didn’t realize how much work the class required. I was blown away by the expectations and deadlines. Although everyone says don’t be a quitter, I thought quitting was my only option. I went to my guidance counselor and Mrs. Burke and tried to do everything I could to quit the class. I was told since I signed up for the class and signed a contract, I had to stay. After that meeting, it hit me. I had to put up with the class the rest of the year and just do my best. Over the next few deadlines I did better, doing my work and trying to do it on time. Unfortunately, my dedication and inspiration went downhill and to end the year, I basically failed my last deadline. The editor had to take over a week before deadline day. Although I’m not going to be on staff next year, I can definitely use this experience as a lesson learned. I realized you can’t just give up and quit things. You must do your best no matter how hard it is. Especially, if you signed up for the task you’re trying to quit. I’m now thankful for my guidance counselor and Mrs. Burke for making me stay in the class. It taught me a great life lesson that I can carry with me.

Reflection #6

At mid-term I was asked what is my greatest weakness. I thought that my greatest weakness would be getting things done on time and procrastinating. Throughout the year I improved this weakness and made it a strength. By the end of the year I was really good at managing my time. I made to-do lists so I would know what I need to get done and when it needed to be done. Also, for another class of mine we had to change one thing in our life to get a benefit out of it. I changed the fact that I waited until the last minute to get everything done. This helped me enormously. I stopped procrastinating. I think I changed a lot this year especially from mid-term to the end of the year.

-----Y30. Sports spread: one spread Pages 136-137 Freshman/JV Football

I feel I did really well on this

spread. I found great pictures that went well with the design of the spread. I wrote both stories by myself and finished the page with a good ending.

Y28. Student Life spread: one spread-----Pages 26-27 Fashion

This was my favorite page I did this

year. It was fun doing all of the different photo effects and all of the fashion elements on the page. I really enjoyed working on it.

------Y34. People spread with mug photo Page 245 Flying

I feel like this page wasvery simple

but successful. I wrote the story by myself. The preflight check list was creative and I like how we used that as secondary coverage.
