Self evaluation essay
When I was a freshman, I read the yearbook and thought about all the work that was put in and I admired
everyone that contributed. My desire to be on yearbook only increased sophomore year when my sister was accepted onto the newspaper staff. Although they are not the same class and they have different responsibilities, they are part of the Boone publications and i got to observe the daily activities of these students. After school, I would wait for my sister to finish her work and I would quietly watch all the teenagers working hard to meet their deadlines. I loved the atmosphere in the Publication room and wanted to be a part of the fun.
When I was a sophomore, I signed up for Journalism I and I was excited to start the long road to
yearbook. I worked hard to impress my teacher and fellow classmates. At the end of the year, I was ecstatic to hear that I had been accepted onto the yearbook staff. I was ready to learn and work hard in the upcoming years ahead.
Over the last year, I have learned an immense amount of knowledge about myself and working hard.
The deadlines whipped me into shape and helped with my procrastination. I learned that I simply cannot wait until the last minute to do things. I also learned about what it takes to work together as a unit. We all need to compromise and help people throughout the year. Although we have separate deadlines, it is all one book and we need to
work together. To add to that, journalism ethics were a large portion of what I learned. Being a journalist, you have to abide by a certain ethics code which you cannot break. Yearbook had taught me to always follow these rules, in and out of the classroom. It taught me to take these rules and apply them to everyday life. Lastly, I learned about advertising. I saw that it was difficult to make people want to buy a yearbook and we needed to make it appealing so that the students would be interested. This was a very valuable class to take because it taught me about computer skills, sales, teamwork, dedication and commitment. I can apply all of these skills in the real world when I get a job. These skills are admired in every place of employment.

My best piece of work this year would be my spread in the Student Life section called “Passion for Politics”. I
truly feel like this was the spread that was the most interesting and most appealing to the eye. I love the topic that I wrote about and I love that students are able to get involved with politics by reading the spread.
The purpose of the piece was the show how students feel about the presidential election. My story was about
the students that are 18 and older and that planned on voting in the upcoming election. I asked them about their impact in the government and why they felt the way they did about the presidential candidates. They also expressed to me how the felt about the government and if they thought they truly made a difference in elections.
This spread was not very hard to complete. I found myself very intrigued with what the students had to say
and I enjoyed listening to their opinions about politics. When I received my spread, I loved the colors and the design of the page. It was very easy to work off what my editor gave me. The only hard part about the page was my graphics. I had previously planned to go to a polling place on Election Day with three students. When I arrived on location, the officials their said it was against the law to take pictures of them voting. That was a huge problem because I needed graphics on my page. Although I didn’t get the pictures that I previously wanted, I took pictures of students voting in a mock election online.
This piece evolved so much from beginning to end. Half way through the deadline, my editor and I had to
change the entire layout due to my picture situation. I did not have a wide variety of shots and since Election Day had already passed, I had no way to retake any of these graphics. We had to change the size and shape of the dominant photo and move everything around. Although most of my elements on the page stayed the same, some things changed. I learned so much from this deadline. The most important thing I learned was planning. I saw that sometimes your plans will not always follow through and you need a backup plan to help you in those situations. Although I had talked with the students voting and decided on taking pictures, I had to adjust these plans when an obstacle was in the way. I had to quickly think of a solution to my problem. I also learned about working together and compromise. Although my editor liked the design before, she helped me move things around and create a whole new layout based on my graphics. She knew that we had to work together to make this spread look great. Lastly, I learned a lot about interviewing skills. As we all know, politics is a very touchy subject. I had to be courteous and kind when talking about people’s views on the government.
The final product was great. My favorite part was the test to see if you were a democrat or a republican. I had
fun making that graphic organizer and I enjoyed how it looks. It truly draws the reader in. It is short, sweet and to the point so the reader will not get bored. I also liked the body copy very much. I enjoyed how I involved the student’s opinions and tried to cover all sides of the story.

The piece I chose that could still use work was the cheerleading page, “Climb to the Top”. I feel like I could have
done more to make this page great. I would have done many things to make this a more memorable layout.
I learned so many things from this spread. First and foremost, I learned that camera settings are so important.
If you don’t have the right camera settings, you will never get the picture that you want. I went to countless football games trying to get the right pictures for the page. I tried to have them tumble during their breaks and come to their practices. Although I went to their games, I could not get the picture right. It always seemed to be too blurry, out of focus or the lighting was not quite right. Even though I took all those pictures, I could not find one that would be good enough for a dominant. I also learned about time management. Before I knew it, deadline was there and I still did not have a dominant photo. I was in a time crunch because I wasn’t thinking ahead of time. Finally, I found a picture of senior Taylor Moore in a stunt. Even though it was a good picture, I knew I could have done better. I wanted to get a picture of the girls tumbling on the page; they were all just too blurry. I know that if I had more time, I could have made that page great. Also, the pictures on my page were all stationary. The girls were cheering and stunting, but there was nothing special going on in any of the photos. I felt disappointed that I could not get a tumbling shot into the layout.
Also, I feel as if I could have improved on the body copy. Throughout the deadline, I was writing about some-
thing totally different than what my editor wanted. I kept changing my story ideas and finally, when I got my angle right, deadtake
line was around the corner. I felt as if I rushed through the interviews and didn’t my time. I believe that if I had more time to thoroughly interview the girls, I could have made it into a truly great story. Looking back at the page now, I really like the spread. Although I know I had me in me, it is still a quality piece of work and I am proud of it. I know that I contributed to the yearbook and I am happy about that.

149-004_taraflip.jpg This picture was printed on the cheerleading page. I am very proud of this picture and am happy that it was included in the yearbook. I like this picture because it shows great action. My advisor wanted a picture of tumbling and I went to every football game to get it. It also has a center of visual interest. This picture is very interesting to the reader because it is full of action and excitement. I was attracted to this picture because although it is a little blurry, it shows great movement and talent of the young cheerleader. This was my favorite picture of the year.

018-001_zac.jpg This picture was on the volleyball page, as well. It was the dominant photo. I like this picture because it shows great action. Since it was the dominant photo, it was very large on the page and I was afraid that it would be too blurry. It looked great on the page and I am very proud of it. This picture has a great center of visual interest. It also has good lighting, which is hard to do in the gym. I was attracted to this picture because it shows off a student’s talents and it was very close on the page.

Over the past year, I was part of the 2013 Legend Yearbook staff. I believe that I contributed to the production
of the yearbook. At the beginning of the year, I was assigned specific deadlines that were my responsibilities. Along with those seven deadlines, I had to take pictures for photo days and tweet and write beats for my assigned sports team. Throughout the year, I have worked hard on all of my deadlines and helped the editors make the page look perfect. Although I may have not met every single one of my deadline due date, I believe that I worked hard to achieve that goal and to make my spreads the best they could be.
I believe my biggest asset to the yearbook staff was dedication. Taking pictures is definitely not east for me.
Throughout the year, I had to cover three sports pages, instead of just one like the other staffers. Cheerleading and boys soccer was very difficult to take pictures of because of the lighting and action movement. Although I ended up going to every single soccer game and took pictures of cheer at every football game, I never gave up and tried my very best to get the pictures I needed. On some occasions, I even traveled to away games to get pictures of the players. I believe that took a great amount of dedication and commitment to the staff.
Another instance of dedication was the politics page. I was planning to take pictures of two different students
voting on Election Day. When I arrive on site, the woman in charge stated that I was not allowed in the building with a camera. This ruined my whole page because I could think of anything else to take pictures of. I ended up taking some posed pictures outside the building and putting one of them on the page. Instead of giving up, I decided to think of other picture school.
ideas. I brought my camera to my history class during the mock election for our I took picture of students voting in the mock election, so that now I didn’t only have 18 year olds pictured on my page. I believe that I was dedicated to my spread in that instance. Along with dedication and commitment, I bring laughter and energy to the room. I am very loud and crazy at times and I can cheer anyone up very quickly. I believe that is a good asset to the staff because I can lift people’s spirits and I will never be boring.
reflection five essay
Over the year on staff, there have been a great amount of hardships. I think the main hardships had to do with
time management. At the end of my sophomore year, I got a job at the Lake Nona YMCA as a lifeguard. During the summer, it consumed my entire life and I basically lived at that pool. Once the school year started, I planned on my schedule to ease up. To my dismay, my boss still worked me almost every day of the week. I was overwhelmed at first, juggling yearbook, tutoring and a job. I had to send weekly emails to my boss telling him all the days I had to take off because of yearbook. From this situation, I learned that time management is so important and you always have to plan your schedule out. I knew that I was going to have to step up and act like an adult when it came to my schedule. I think I handled the situation well because I tried my hardest to never miss any workdays or activities for my job.
Another hardship that I faced this year was working together as a team. Although there are individual dead-
lines, the staff is always working together in one way or another. Whether it is reserving dates for beats or checking out a camera, you always have to consider the other students and keep them into consideration. During deadlines, it is very easy to push other people’s needs behind yours. You want your page to look perfect, thus ignoring the needs of the other staffers in the room. You always need to think about their situation and compromise. Also, in deadline 7, I had a partner. That was a challenge because talking out plans and compromising was a very difficult thing to do. Keeping this in mind, we learned to help each other and work together to make out spread look great. I think it turned out very well and we became closer through the process.
Lastly, another hardship that arose was creativity. I am not a very creative person and I struggle when it
comes to personal individuality. I worked hard to be unique and new but it was always hard for me. When I had to go take sports pictures, I was always working to find the most creative angle and interesting view. It had gotten better throughout this entire year and I know that the more I practice, the more comfortable I will become.
reflection six essay
My first goal was to meet my last deadline and get points for being on time. I did not meet this goal because
I was late for my Boys Volleyball spread. This deadline was very difficult for me because I couldn’t attend either workdays and communication was difficult with my partner. Pictures were another issue because I had to re shoot the team pictures because the resolution was too low on the first set. Although I did not meet the last deadline, i made deadline 6 and earned the 100 points for being on time. Although it was not my last deadline, I think it still counts for something.
My second goal is to take great pictures at Brave Aid during my photo day. I believe that I met this goal.
During Brave Aid, I sat in the front row and took over 400 pictures. I was prepared before the show and I knew what pictures I wanted to shoot. I went in with a great attitude and I was ready to work. Throughout the show, I took pictures of every act. I used great lighting and good photo composition. Although none of my photos got picked to be on the spread in the yearbook, I still believe that I did a great job taking pictures and it was a learning experience for the future.
My last goal was to make my portfolio creative and turn it in on time. This goal has not happened yet. I truly
like my portfolio theme. It is simple and clean and I can use it in a professional environment. I have not seen anyone else have a theme like mine so it is creative and unique. I will turn this portfolio in on time so I will have completed my goal for the last assignment of the semester.
reflection seven Y15. Sports action photo 018-001_zac.jpg (pg. 018-019) I think this picture perfectly fits this category. I believe that this is the best picture that I took all year, It shows great action and emotion in the heat of the game. I love the lighting and the focus that this picture has. It was the dominant photo on the volleyball page and I am very proud of this picture.
Y28. Student Life spread: one spread “Passion for politics” (pg. 032-033) This was my favorite spread of the year. I loved writing about politics and the government and the students involvement. I think this spread is perfect to submit because it is interesting and appealing to the eye. Since you can only cover elections every four years, it if definitely unique and different.
Y2. Sports reporting “Seniors fuel Drive” (pg. 170-171) I think this is a great choice for sports reporting because i am very proud of my body copy for this soccer story. I feel as if i truly captured the entire season into one story. It explains their hardships and challenges throughout their season together as a team. It also states where the got their leadership from. I think this piece truly shows off the best in me.

Boys Soccer Dominate Oakridge By: Delaney Seacord On Dec. 3, the boys varsity soccer team faced Oak Ridge High on the Norton Baker field. Boone was the first on the scoreboard with senior Juan Caceres gently kicking the ball into the goal after a penalty in the goalie box. Following his lead, sophomore Eli Matthews ran past his defenders and scored the second goal of the night. In the box, sophomore Noah Franklin consistently blocked the Pioneer’s attempts to score. Caceres scored three goals throughout the first half and was a prominent offensive player. On the defensive end, junior Foster Zannini kept up with the opponents all night and kept Oak Ridge from scoring with his defensive skills.

The teams two main scorers, seniors Connor Wood and Juan Caceres, were not able to attend the game but the boys still managed a win without them. Lake Mary made the first goal of the night. Shortly after the game started, junior Daniel Dewitz broke his arm trying to block a kick from the opponent. As the second half started, junior Daniel Hurtado worked the offense and scored, making the score 3-1. Defensive players Stephen Brock and Alexander Blanca, juniors, prevented Lake Mary from scoring goals. Junior Daniel Barr defended the goal, making saves and blocks. Barr played as a substitute goalie, preventing almost all of the attempted shots on goal. Sophomore Jared Angle scored the last goal of the night kicking the ball in after a corner kick from a teammate. The next game on Jan. 8 against Lake Highland.

Heartbreaker Against Lake Highland By: Delaney Seacord Playing at home, the soccer team faced Lake Highland, a dominate opponent. The game started out hopeful, but took a turn for the worst as the Lake Highland Highlanders started to score. During the first half, the team could not put any points on the scoreboard. By the time the defense started to fight back, Lake Highland was already up by four points, making it difficult to overcome their deficit. Once the second half started, junior Alexander Blanca scored a goal during a penalty. Shortly following that goal, junior Daniel Hurtado ran the field with the ball and dodged the goalie, adding one more goal to the score. Freshman Russell Holaday, playing for the first time as goalie on the varsity team, made saves throughout the game. By the end of the game, Lake Highland had added five more goals to the score, ending the game,2-9. The boys next game is away on Wednesday, Jan. 9, against University at 7:30 p.m.
