Design and Justice A disign for minority
PERSONAL PROFILE As an industrial designer with a business administration degree, I am curious, innovative and enthusiastic in design, but at the same time, I know what the market needs.
WHY DESIGN? While traveling around the world, I always ask myself why the poors cannot enjoy design?Who owns design? Is it just for people from higher classes?I believe industrial design can improve the life quality of the minorities.

DESIGN STORY Designers for years have created a wide variety of furniture that is beautiful or even exquisite. However, they are nothing more than cold objects that do not speak to their owners. As a designer, I aim at designing a kind of furniture that is warm and could interact with its owner.
WHY CHAIR We spend most of our time sitting on the chairs. When we are tired, they load our weight. When we are alone, they embrace us. When we are struggling, they accompany us. They are our friends.

Obseving diffrent sitting postures on the chair, we could speculate what they are up to. Each posture is unique. When he is thinking, he holds his jaw with his left hand and touched his leg with his right hand. When they are enjoing each other accompany, the couple put their arms across each other. When he is reading, he sits straight, holding the book with his right hand while having the legs open. When they are meeting, they sit relaxly to listen to the speaker and articulate their ideas with gestures.

Since this chair is human-like, I create two different models based on gender. Examining human figure and posture, a man’s muscles and skulls are stronger and thicker while a weman’s are lighter and thinner. Also, a man’s pelvis is straight and narrow; a woman’s is circular and wider.

CONCLUSION Product description Since arm and hand are crucical to human interaction, the chair has a human-like arm and a palm-shaped light built on the top of it. Both arm and hand reflect my concern to humanity. Also, the chair comes with two different models customized for different gender. I name it ‘‘chairer and chairess’’ in order to make you feel more intimate about it.

DESIGN STORY Due to climate change, the weather condition is getting more and more severe. In Taiwan, typhoon is a common natural disaster and the flood takes away people’s live every year. In most cases, flood victims have enough time to escape but they do not have useful and effective tools to assist them. Therefore, I decide to design a “flood conquer” which is a six-pack plastic pumping boxes that, by combing it with your existing furniture, you can turn it into a ‘’buoyant apparatus’’. In this case, even people with low income can afford to build thier own life saving gear.
WHY BUOYANT APPARATUS When flood happens at suburban area, there is only one way that people can be saved. It is floating on water for a longer time and wait for rescue. A buoyant apparatus is the best choice because it can load much more victims than other rescue tools and it is strong enough to prevent from broken. Thus, I choose it to research and design in this project.

It is the most important event that the buoyant apparatus must be strong enough to prevent from broken. In a serious flood, victims don’t have much time to escape, so the buoyant apparatus requires no adjustment or preparation to use. Flood is not a nomal condition. If people buy a buoyant apparatus, it would take up space in a house. Therefore, I suggest it can be multi-function. In the surbuban, it is so wide that rescue workers are hard to find the victims. So, the connection to other people is crucial in a serious flood disaster. When flood is happening, everything floats on the water and it is in a mass. The buoyant apparatus must be flexible for different situations.
OBSERVATION
When flood is happening, people figure out many ways to prevent themselve from drowning. They catch planks, plastic bottles or anything that can float on water and turn them into a buoy apparatus. Since most components that they use to make a buoy apparatus are furniture from the house, this gives me a chance to research what kinds of furniture can be a component or a functional buoy apparatus.
CONCEPT Catch the dining table and bed in the house When flood is happening, we can see lots of furniture floating on the water, and they are a kind of security tool. After my obsevation of all kinds of furniture in a house, I found that a dining table or a bed can be used as a life boat beacuse its large surface can accomadate people and they are strong enough to save more life. To buy a lifeboat and put it in the house is expensive and may take up space, so I want to design a product which can integrate with dinning table and bed. Also, this product is multi-functional, thus it will be useful on a daily basis.

Definition of Waste Pickers The term waste pickers can be broadly defined as people who reclaim “reusable and recyclable materials from what others have cast aside as waste” (Samson 2009). They range from poor people rummaging through garbage in search of necessities such as food to informal private collectors of recyclables who sell to middlemen or businesses. <Weigo contributors, "Waste picker", 26 Oct. 2014, from http://wiego.org/informal-economy/occupationalgroups/waste-pickers>
In this project, the term “waste picker” is used to refer to those who do the primary collecting and sorting of waste in order to sell to middleman or business.

How to design a better cart for waste picker?
PROBLEMS FINDING
Injury Waste pickers who use heavy cart on uneven road or up the slope will increase the risk of hurting themsleves.
DANGEROUS The color of the cart is too dark to move durning the traffic.
LIMITED SPACE Waste picker have to put the most recycles in a cart with limited space for selling so they piled up everything.

EFFORT-SAVING Push Rather Than Pull
Clockwork Power
If you pull a load while facing the direction of travel, your arm is stretched behind your body, placing your shoulder and back in an awkward position that increases the likelihood of injury.
Clockwork power is in the sense of energy storage by a coiled spring. It is attempted use as a propulsive power. The propulsive power can help waste pickers easily move a cart.
Adjust Handle Height
Big Wheels
To push, the handle should be between your elbow and hip.
Large diameter wheels end up making a cart ride smoother because they rise over bumps and holes more even.
45 Degrees Angle Construction
Light Weight
The force should be at an angle of 45 degrees above the horizontal when pushing the cart under poor conditions.
To choose a light-weight material and use hollow construction are important to achieve effort-saving.

CREATE SPACE
Reflective Stripe
Folding Stand
Waste pickers are exposed to traffic so they need the high visibility protection.
The recycles in different shapes and volumes have to put in a limieted space of cart. It is better to achieve maximum utilization of space by using a folding stand.
Led Light
Classification
Carts which are equipped with the light or led light bar can be noticed easily. It will improve waste picker’s safety.
It is important to put recycles into different recycle box. In this way, the space can be used more efficiently.
DIY Waste pickers usually tie the plastic bags on their cart to expand the limited space. The shape of bar or rod is the most suitable for fastening a bag.
