WELCOME

Live Leisure, Live Culture, Live Sport Welcome to the winter issue of What’s On in the Scottish Borders. As we countdown to Christmas, this issue has lots of ideas to put you in the festive spirit. There is more than a stocking full of fun lined up, with everything from live screenings of the Royal Ballet performing “The Nutcracker”, fantastic pantomimes, as well as children’s theatre and seasonal music concerts. If comedy is top of your Christmas list then Scotland’s foremost street theatre company, Mischief La-Bas shall also be performing a hilarious winter walkabout in Peebles on 17 December. See them in and around the Library and High Street from 11 am & 1 pm. The Live Borders Arts & Creativity project “Borders LIVE Touring” brings a multitude of high quality, live, professional performances to the Borders. This winter’s programme also includes a tour by Eduardo Nieble, guitarist and composer and production, “Yorgjin Oxo, a Winter’s Saga”. See the feature page for venue details. If film is your interest check the listings for screenings by Selkirk Film Club, Screen 2 at the Tait Hall, Kelso and Duns Community Cinema at the Volunteer Hall.

For when the days are too cold to brave the elements, Live Borders Museums offer a unique insight into Borders history, people and culture. There is something for everyone over the winter period at Tweeddale Museum, Hawick Museum and Borders Textile Towerhouse, with a whole series of winter warming workshops. Why not try your hand at peg loom or Brinkley loom weaving, quilting, knitting, card making or perhaps painting?

In the interim, please send any questions regarding the development of the all-new What’s On to enquiries@liveborders.org.uk So, as we say goodbye to 2016 and hello to 2017, we would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our printed edition readers and look forward to welcoming you to What’s On online in the new year. Borders LIVE Touring Puppet Animation Scotland Festival 2017 - includes a number of workshops and performances across the Scottish Borders

Review from BLT’s Summer 2016 supported programme:

Brewband - an inclusive, memorable and explosive music and dance performance that blurs boundaries between musicians and dancers and challenges people’s perceptions of what a dancer is, created by disabled choreographer Marc Brew. Bringing together top Scottish rock artists and dancers and the Borders community.

The View from Castle Rock from Stella Quines in conjunction with Edinburgh International Book Festival MacArts, Galashiels. Saturday 4 September

Firebrand Theatre Company – Borders based theatre company takes their latest production on tour in the Borders. Owdyado Theatre Company – this fresh and dynamic theatre company from Cornwall visits the Borders for the first with ‘A View From The Edge’ as part of a 5 date South of Scotland tour. Sgoil Chiùil na Gàidhealtachd S6 Tour 2017 The National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music at Plockton High School is the centre where talented young traditional musicians from throughout Scotland can come and develop their skills and they have a 3 date tour in the Borders

The first sell-out tour for Borders LIVE Touring! With capacity audiences at Eastgate Theatre, Heart of Hawick, MacArts and Kirkhope Village Hall.

The View from Castle Rock presented a dramatic adaptation of two stories taken from a collection written by Canadian Nobel Laureate Alice Munro. These moving and enigmatic short stories imagine the extraordinary experiences of Munro’s Scottish Borders ancestors who sailed from Leith Docks in 1818 in the hope of a better life in Canada. The production was presented by awardwinning theatre company Stellar Quines and included an impressive cast to play the Laidlaw family from Ettrickbridge. A very appreciative audience at MacArts thoroughly enjoyed the production.

Dr John Stewart Muir The Beloved Doctor

In 2014 Scottish Borders Archive and Local History Service, the Heritage Hub, was gifted a collection of diaries for the years 1891 and 1899-1938 compiled by a Selkirk GP, Dr John Stewart Muir. Staff at the Heritage Hub have been transcribing entries from the diaries from August 1914 onwards and these are blogged daily on their 100th anniversary. Dr Muir’s diaries are a rich source of not just medical information but also the social history of the town and County of Selkirk. The next stage of this project aims to creatively engage the community of Selkirk and beyond with the story of Dr Muir, described in his obituary as “a grand old man of the Borders” and “a friend as well as a healer”, while promoting the existing transcription and blogging work of the Heritage Hub.

In early 2017 a series of podcasts will be recorded, centred on the diaries and their recurring themes. These will be available at www.liveborders. org.uk/archives, along with the newlook blog. Dr Muir himself will be brought to life in a production written and performed by local actor John Nichol: Friday 24th February 7pm Saturday 25th February 2.30pm £4 / £2.50 concession Tickets available from: The County Hotel, Selkirk 01750 721233 (credit card bookings incur 50p)

Move More which is a physical activity programme for people affected by cancer has just launched in the Borders. The programme is funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and is in partnership with Live Borders. Traditionally cancer patients have been told to rest but research by Macmillan has shown that being active during and after treatment can improve physical and emotional health and help to minimise the side effects of treatment.

Referrals can come via a health professional or people can self-refer into the programme. From walking groups to circuit and gentle movement classes, there is something for everyone.

All of the activities are free of charge and you’ll be with others that know what you’re going through.

To find out more call your local Move More Development Officer on 01896 661166 ext 311, email movemore@liveborders.org.uk or visit http://www.liveborders.org.uk andWhat’s search for2016 Move More Borders. 34 On Winter

Just Cycle Ltd is a new initiative to recycle bikes in the Scottish Borders. A charity whose main aims are recreational environmental and educational, we have a workshop at the old Craft Centre in Tweedbank. There are many parts of a bike which can be recycled and yet the majority of bikes in need of repair, simply outgrown or no longer used are either dumped in to landfill or taken to metal containers at Recycling Centres. If we can recycle bikes as bikes, we can make them available locally at a low cost, and encourage more people to cycle. Scottish Borders is an area where cycling is promoted as a healthy activity and as a low cost and eco alternative to the car. The recycled bikes project is not intended to be

in competition with the established cycle shops. Indeed it is felt that Just Cycle will promote the uptake of cycling and may result in more business for the cycle shops. In other parts of the country where recycling of bikes is already happening, the take up of cycling in these areas has increased. The project will also allow for skills sharing and through training, can promote employability of young people. Bike Recycling Social Enterprises are becoming established in a number of areas in Scotland often incorporating a café or other enterprise. These Community based businesses often also rely upon volunteers, so give opportunities for social interaction and personal development.

The men’s shed initiative, gaining momentum across Scotland and now taking off in the Borders, sees older men coming together and working on projects such as joinery and motor mechanics. There is no reason why bikes could not also be repaired in men’s shed workshops and distributed directly or sold through Just Cycle If you are interested in knowing more about Just Cycle, would like to become involved as a volunteer or as a member, or if your organisation would like to support the initiative and promote cycling within your workforce, we would like to hear from you.
