Visit Old Gala House, an important and vibrant museum and gallery nestled in the heart of the busy Borders town of Galashiels. Learn the story of this historic house and the development of the town. Dating back to 1583, this impressive building has seen over 400 years of activity and bears the fascinating traces of historic change: the painted, wood-panelled ceiling dating from 1635 is a rare survival in Scotland, and it contrasts wonderfully with the ornate 18th century plaster ceiling in an adjoining room. Other rooms carry displays and information on the history of the local area and its enterprising people.

Sat 11 August – Sat 22 September Hidden Lives - 4 Chris Morrison An exhibition which invites the viewer to question what happens behind closed doors. How hard was life in that ruined bothy on the hill? What ancient battles have been fought for control of that castle by the sea? OPENING HOURS Mon 26 March – Wed 31 October Mon – Sat 11-4, Sun 12 – 3 Halliwell’s House Museum & Gallery is housed in the oldest surviving row of dwellings in Selkirk. The building dates back over 400 years and makes a truly atmospheric museum situated in Halliwell’s Close just off the busy Market Place. The Close has seen a lot of changes down the years, and these are engagingly reflected in the displays. An old ironmonger’s shop is reconstructed on the ground floor and is crammed full of objects which evoke a bygone age. This compact museum tells the story of the town’s ancient history with connections to William Wallace and the tragedy of Flodden as well as its more recent past. The internationally renowned Selkirk Common Riding is documented in a dedicated room whilst other displays include a well-travelled trunk relating to the enigmatic adventures of world famous explorer Mungo Park. The Robson Gallery hosts a vibrant programme of visual art and educational exhibitions throughout the season.

SIR WALTER SCOTT’S COURTROOM Market Place, SELKIRK TD7 4BT t: 01750 726456 / 01750 20761 #WalterScottCourtroom OPENING HOURS
Sat 14 July – Sun 2 September You Wonder What’s Round That Corner - 3 Graham Stokes I got my ideas for most of these paintings from what you might call the everyday. The process starts when something catches my eye. Rather than let it pass, I try to work out what it is that interests me tucked away in the mundane. This eye-catcher then forms the basis of the painting. This process helps me find richness and interest in the kind of places where most of us were raised and / or live. I also hope that the paintings encourage the viewer to imagine their own stories in there. Sat 8 September – Wed 31 October Toys Were Us and Other Etchings - 4 Robin McFarlane In Robin MacFarlane’s finely worked etchings he playfully delves into aspects of life that he finds bewildering. And since there are no answers he offers instead an alternative world in which aspects of human behaviour are wryly observed through images of toys and simple objects.
Mon 26 March – Wed 31 October April – September Mon – Fri 10 – 4, Sat 11– 3 May – August Mon – Fri 10 – 4, Sat 11– 3 & Sun 11– 3 October Mon – Sat 12 – 3 Closed for Selkirk Common Riding Thurs 14 – Sun 17 June Sir Walter Scott’s Courtroom is an iconic link to the great Scottish writer. In this building Scott sat as Sheriff, dispensing justice to the town of Selkirk for nearly 30 years until his death in 1832. This imposing, historic building dates from 1804 and stands in the vibrant Market Place, next to the statue dedicated to Sir Walter who was affectionately known as The Shirra (Sheriff). Inside the former Town Hall, the story of Scott’s association with the town is presented. Visitors will enjoy the reconstructed courtroom and be intrigued by accompanying tales of past crimes, punishments and lucky escapes. In addition to displays of personal objects that once belonged to the world-famous writer of great literary works including Rob Roy and the Waverley Novels, there are fascinating items from the Royal Burgh’s rich history. Sat 4 Aug – Sun 2 Sept Inside and Out: The Art of Christian Small - 2 Christian Small lived and painted in West Linton for over 60 years. Her landscapes were drawn from around the village, their colour and draftsmanship brilliantly capturing the countryside she loved: the wind-bent trees, pale green grasses and the rolling Pentland Hills. Take home a souvenir of this exhibition with a book of Christian’s art which includes twelve poems inspired by a selection of her work and written by Gerda Stevenson: actor, writer, director and singer-songwriter.
