We hope you will enjoy this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s programme of exhibitions presented in thirteen Live Borders museums, galleries and visitor centres plus four independent museums we support. Our museums tell the story of Borders people from the earliest times to the present day; their struggles, their homes, their work and their creativity; from Roman occupation to Coldstream Guards; from the life of a 17th century laird to that of a prisoner in a 19th century jail; from textile mills to an ironmongerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shop and from the waters of a health spa to Common Riding traditions. They also explore the lives of the famous including Mary Queen of Scots, Sir Walter Scott, Jim Clark and Jimmie Guthrie. Discover the history of this important house and the development of the town. Dating back to 1583, this impressive building has seen over 400 years of activity and bears the fascinating traces of historic change: the painted, wooden panelled ceiling dating from 1635 is a rare survival in Scotland, and contrasts wonderfully with the ornate 18th century plaster ceiling in an adjoining room. Further rooms present displays and information on the history of the local area and its enterprising people.

The house hosts temporary exhibitions, children’s events, tearoom with free Wi-Fi, audio guide, gifts & souvenirs. Free car parking & partial wheelchair access with a stair lift to the exhibitions on the 1st floor.

2 Sat 1 April – Sat 6 May We live in a beautiful country! - 1 Lesley Johnson Modern acrylic paintings and felted merino. Inspired by the light, shape, colour, contrast and texture, abundant in our Scottish landscape. From the blue waters of the West Coast, to the rolling Borders Hills.

3 Sat 13 May – Sun 25 June Light and the Land - 2, 2a, 2b Andy Cross Atmospheric Landscapes and still life paintings celebrating colour and texture. Sat 1 July – Sun 6 Aug Lightscapes - 3, 3a Graham Riddell – Photography Exhibition A passion for landscape and nature photography has inspired these ‘Lightscapes’. Light is the medium and inspiration of photography and the exhibition captures fleeting illusive moments and considered locations with a focus on core themes of Land, Air, Fire and Water. Sat 12 August – Sun 17 Sept Inspiring Scotland - 4, 4a Emma Herdman A selection of watercolours and pencil inspired by the atmospheric landscape and beautiful buildings of the Scottish Borders. Emma’s artwork has been described as whimsical, calming and simple. The gentle, neutral paintings of both known and imaginary places inspire thoughts of positivity, pastoral life, and homeliness. A real joy.

Sat 1 April – Sun 4 June Old Gala Club Visits Lost Galashiels - 1 This exhibition is a fascinating look at how the town has changed. Using the Old Gala Club’s extensive photographic collection you can see public buildings, sporting facilities, corner shops, parks, bridges, places of work and many more interesting places that have been consigned to past memories.

Sat 23 Sept – Tues 31 Oct Ghost Country - 5, 5a, 5b Lynda Marwood Ghost Country describes a series of drawings and paintings conceptualised around the notion of passing through and remembering. The process of drawing and painting evokes a feeling of transience and impermanence whilst also recording echoes of time and place. Visual recordings made on site are starting points in the process of recall and reinterpreting back in the studio.

Sat 10 June – Sun 20 August Being Human -2 Natasha Smith – Stone Carver Our senses, our feelings, our positive qualities are the inspiration for the Stone Carver. Carvings are made in such a way as to appear uncovered, discovered, in the limestone - a stone of ancient marine fossils. The spoons signify and symbolise humanity. They distinguish us from the primates. They symbolise love, nurture and civilisation.

Sat 26 August – Tue 31Oct The Colour of Art - 3 An exciting artistic and scientific voyage of discovery. From sparkling minerals to crushed insects, learn about the surprising materials used to create pigments and the incredible journeys made by artists in their pursuit of new hues. Explore the journey of colour from lapis lazuli to cobalt blue, ancient vermilion to bright cadmium red, through yellow, orange, purple and verdigris to deep green viridian and finally, gold and silver.

CHRISTOPHER BOYD GALLERY Sat 1 April – Sun 2 July Warhol to Walker: American Prints from Pop Art to today - 1 Focusing on modern and contemporary American printmaking, this British Museum Partnership Tour features nine key works from the Museum’s print collection. The exhibition highlights the progress and creativity of printmaking through some of the most dynamic and turbulent years in US history right to the present day, with artists including Warhol, Rauschenberg, and Kara Walker. This exhibition is organised in partnership with the British Museum, and is generously supported by the Dorset Foundation.

Sat 12 August – Sun 17 September Another Field - 2 Morag Eaton A unique visual exploration of the local farming community by a Berwick- based printmaker inspired by the farmers’ response to changing market conditions in these uncertain economic times. Of particular interest to her are those farmers who have adopted creative business opportunities. A free printmaking workshop will accompany this exhibition. Sat 23 September – Tue 31 October About Face - 3 Alex Hain, Derek Jones & Angela Hunter Portraiture, one of the oldest art forms, is the artistic representation of a person’s face; the intent of the artist to record likeness, personality and mood of the sitter. Three Borders portraitists demonstrate their skills through painting, drawing and sculpture alongside a selection of portraits from the Permanent Collection of Fine Art including Peter Howson, John Bellany and William Johnstone.

Sat 1 July – Sun 6 Aug Living In Pattern & Colour - 1 Orwell & Goode Mrs.O and Mrs.G are a smiley printmaking duo working from converted stables in the Borders countryside. Their design is all about colour and pattern infused with fun. Taking inspiration from the Scottish landscape with its earthy muted colours and lesser-celebrated pattern, and even the weather! Orwell and Goode make the ordinary, extraordinary.

A new exhibiting space upstairs which also doubles as an Education Room.

LAIRD’S ROOM Sat 1 April – Sat 6 May Illusive Moments Sheila Anderson Hardy The Scottish Borders provides the inspiration for this selection of lively watercolours, oil paintings, drawings and prints. “My passion is to find and capture the essential meaning, beauty and drama in nature, landscape and still life.” Sheila trained at Glasgow School of Art under the late Robert Stewart. Sat 13 May – Sun 25 June Summer Hedgerows Susan Bourne A collection of paintings inspired by the hedgerows of the beautiful Scottish Borders countryside. The hedgerows and fields 8

Sat 12 August – Sun 17 Sept Passchendaele, 1917 A commemorative exhibition presenting the historic Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. Discover the crucial role of the destroyed landscape during the Battle and how both armies were forced to adapt their tactics and equipment. The impact on the servicemen, both physically and emotionally, was enormous. Passchendaele is known as one of the most horrific battles from the First World War, with more than half-a-million casualties for a territorial gain of merely eight kilometres. ‘Passchendaele’ not only became a concept in the history of the First World War, it also became a symbol of the great futility of the violence of war in all its horror.

HALLIWELL’S HOUSE MUSEUM ROBSON GALLERY

Halliwell’s House Museum is housed in the oldest surviving row of dwellings in Selkirk. The building dates back over 400 years and makes a truly atmospheric museum situated in Halliwell’s Close just off the bustling Market Place. The Close has seen a lot of changes down the years, and these are engagingly reflected in the displays. The old ironmongers shop is reconstructed on the ground floor and is crammed full of related objects which evoke a bygone age. The internationally renowned Selkirk Common Riding is documented in a dedicated room on the first floor. This compact museum tells the story of the town’s ancient history with connections to William Wallace and the tragedy of Flodden as well as its more recent past. The Robson Gallery presents a changing programme of art and craft exhibitions. Gifts, souvenirs and books are available in the Museum Shop. There is a lift to the first floor and full wheelchair access.

Sat 1 April – Sun 23 April Sew and Tell - 1 Selkirk High School Creative Fashion Secondary and primary school pupils showcase their creativity with shoe designs and upcycled fashion outfits inspired by a wide range of themes including ‘armour’ and the imaginative use of circuits and high tech innovation. Also stunning fashion photographs of senior pupils taken on location at Bowhill by John Parris.

Sat 26 August – Sun 10 September SWI 100th Anniversary - 4 To mark this auspicious occasion, a display of traditional craft by members of the Selkirkshire ‘rural’ which was formed in 1927 and celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. The Selkirkshire Womens’ Institute later enabled countrywomen to come together and socialise when their husbands were away at war. The SWI continues to flourish, promoting friendship and skill sharing for all women. Craft demonstrations accompany this exhibition, please telephone 01750 726456 for details.

Sat 29 April – Sun 18 June Spring Fling - 2 Janet Cleghorn & Linda Lovatt Mixed media still life paintings inspired by colour and pattern reflecting Janet Cleghorn’s background in textile design. Featuring her collection of old china and bottles with arrangements of fruit and flowers, the unusual aerial perspective gives a contemporary feel to traditional subject matter. Also Linda Lovatt’s whimsical assemblages of ‘beasties’, created with copper, brass, pretty broken china, old keys and other found objects. Sat 24 June – Sun 20 August Take Three - 3 Tom Scott RSA, William Heatlie & Sandy Milligan A celebration of the Borders landscape through the seasons with works selected from the Permanent Fine Art Collection by two 19th century, Selkirk-born artists, Tom Scott and William Heatlie. This year marks the 90th anniversary of Tom Scott’s death. Also on showbeautiful pastels by the well-known contemporary artist Sandy Milligan, from Denholm.

Sat 16 September – Tue 31 October Contemporary Selkirk - 5 Selkirk Camera Club Recent photographs of the town, and surrounding countryside, by club members demonstrating their observation skills and highlighting the more unusual aspects of their home town.

Sir Walter Scott’s Courtroom is one of our direct links to the great Scottish writer. In this building Sir Walter Scott sat as Sheriff, dispensing justice to the town of Selkirk for nearly 30 years, until his death in 1832. This iconic building dates from 1804 and stands in the Market Place of the Royal Burgh of Selkirk, next to a statue dedicated to Sir Walter. Inside, you will discover the fascinating story of Scott’s association with Selkirk. Browse permanent displays of personal objects that once belonged to the world-famous writer of great literary works including Rob Roy and the Waverley Novels. Books, gifts and souvenirs are available from our shop. Tour groups are welcome. Please note that there are several steps leading to the Courtroom entrance and accordingly there is no disabled access.

SCHOOLS PROGRAMME 2017 Primary & Secondary School Visits to Sir Walter Scott’s Courtroom Broaden your exploration of Sir Walter Scott’s world with a visit to Sir Walter Scott’s Courtroom in Selkirk. A member of our staff will help your pupils discover what life was like in an 1800’s courtroom, and make them feel they have stepped back in time. Focussing on crime, punishment, law and order this is ideal for school groups as there are plenty of hands- on activities designed to stimulate and educate keen young minds. The Chambers Room forms part of the Peebles Library and is open during the above times and for additional hours. For further information telephone 01721 726333. The Chambers Institution was established by William Chambers, one of the founders of the famous publishing house, in 1859. The Museum & Gallery present a lively programme of exhibitions in this historic building throughout the year. The Chambers Room houses the extraordinary friezes commissioned by William Chambers and also features exhibitions on the history of Peebles and the surrounding area.

CHAMBERS ROOM Sat 15 April – Sat 10 June Come o’er the hills tae Peebles 2017 marks the 120th year of the Revival of the Riding of the Burgh Marches of Peebles. This element of the week long Peebles Festival harks back to the days of the Reivers; with the crowning of the Beltane Queen established in 1899 reflecting Celtic May Day customs. On display are many of the objects used in the festival and personal stories from those who have held key roles in them. Sun 18 June – Sat 23 December History of Peeblesshire This exhibition tells the story of this most diverse and fascinating county of Scotland through objects, maps and photographs from pre-history to the present day.

Sat 6 May – Sat 3rd June Peebles Camera Club exhibition Peebles Camera Club is showcasing some of the images taken by its members. As a young camera club its talents are displayed with prints and digital images. Diverse subjects will include landscape, nature, architecture, people and many more. Included in the exhibition will be a display of pre-digital photographic equipment. Sat 20 May from 10.30 based in the Burgh Hall of the Chambers Institution Plastered! - 2 This open day will herald the exhibition of the same name, with moulds great and small, demonstrations, guided tours and the opportunity to create your own work in plaster. A Festival of Museums event.

MUSEUM ROOM December 2016 – Sat 29 April 2017 The Offensive Romans - 1 Is Burnswark Hill the site of a Roman training camp or a scene of bloody conflict between invading Romans and the native people of southern Scotland? Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, a team of archaeologists carried out a dig in 2015. This exhibition presents new evidence about this intriguing site.

Sat 10 June – Sat 29 July Plastered! - 3 The firm of L Grandison & Son was founded in Peebles in 1886. Specialists in ornamental plasterwork, their skills feature in buildings throughout Scotland, from Blair Castle to Debenhams Department store in Edinburgh. This exhibition tells their story and displays fascinating objects associated with this increasingly rare trade.

THE GALLERY TWEEDDALE MUSEUM Sat 1 April – Sat 3 June Intranquility - 1 Katharine Aarrestad, Alastair Clark, Liz Douglas, David Faithfull, David Forster & Su Grierson A Touring Exhibition from the Society of Scottish Artists The title is a subversive play on the word tranquillity, which is so often used to describe beautiful and remote locations. Using this theme as a starting point, six artists, all professional members of the SSA have been brought together to explore less traditional approaches to landscape, their artworks creating tension and unrest, questioning the role of land, place and the environment in contemporary art.

Sat 5 August – Sat 2 September A Sense of Place From the Hills to the High Street The Royal Burgh of Peebles still has a medieval feel to it and the architecture and natural surroundings are portrayed by local artists represented in a variety of styles and medium from felt to stone.

Sat 9 September – Sat 25 November Lives in a Landscape - 4 Many objects now held in museum collections originated in very distinctive landscapes. This exhibition seeks to set those objects in their true context and to illustrate the lives of the people who made, used and sometimes hid them, discovered and donated them. Sat 2 December – Sat 12 Feb 2018 Fabulous Fifties? Take a nostalgic look back to a decade of change in the lives of people in Peeblesshire. In the fifties, new ideas in fashion, music and design brought about a transformation in the home and on the dance floor. From rock and roll to three ducks flying across a wall!

Sat 15 July – Sat 9 September The Summer Show - 3, 3a Anne Forbes, Marta Utsler & Jacqueline Watt Contemporary abstract paintings by two Edinburgh College of Art graduates and an American artist, trained in Kentucky. These established artists, with successful teaching careers, have exhibited both nationally and internationally. Whilst Utsler and Watt favour strong vibrant colours in their works, Forbes uses a purer and more muted palette, creating sensitive studies of tiny insects, plants and trees within her vast landscapes.

Sat 10 June – Sat 8 July Peebles Art Group - 2, 2a The annual display of artwork by Art Group Members, previous exhibitors and invited artists, covering a wide variety of subjects, styles and media, all are for sale at reasonable prices.

Sat 16 September – Sat 25 November Out of the Woods - 4, 4a Tessa Asquith-Lamb, Catriona Andrews, Stuart Dalgleish, Helen Kemp, Eben Rautenbach, Kenneth McQueenie and Rob Sutherland A mixed media show celebrating the beauty of trees. From hand turned wooden bowls, prints, paintings and wildlife scenes burnt onto reclaimed wood to abstract sculptures made from driftwood and ceramic interpretations of trees – an enduring subject matter for artists highlighting the need to protect our natural environment for future generations.

Sat 1 April – Sun 9 July Natural Inspirations: the wild (and not so wild) around Innerleithen Celebrating the natural history of the area, local artists capture animals and plants of the area through their art. Thu 20 July – Tue 31 October Stories in Stone Uncover the stories behind the key buildings of Innerleithen and environs in the year when the Parish Church celebrates its 150th and the local school its 60th year.

Housed in an historic spa, the permanent exhibition tells the story of Innerleithen and St Ronan’s Wells, describing their connections with the great Scottish writers, Sir Walter Scott and James Hogg. The origins of the unique Cleikum Ceremonies held in July are also explained. The adjoining gardens provide a lovely area to relax in with sculptures, picnic areas, plants for sale and our own spring water to sample. There are free car parking spaces on-site.

Genuine artefacts, reproduction material and colourful display panels give you a glimpse of a fascinating culture. School class visit sessions for active learning accompany this exhibition. Contact Hawick Museum to book. Sun 19 March – Sun 11 June Waterfall Gallery Territory - 2 Niall Campbell, Sam Cornwell, Inge Panneels Colourful meditations in paint, glass and photography. Three artists who have made their home in the Borders present their own cultural interpretations on ideas of geography, space and place.

Mon 1 May – Sun 7 May Hedgehog Week - 4 A week of fun and information about hedgehogs. See a display inside the museum. Meet a live hedgehog at two short talks/activity sessions on Friday and Sunday afternoons, 2-3pm - for all ages. Sessions free but please book. Part of Hedgehog Awareness Week.

Fri 19 May Festival of Museums Weekend Night at the Museum Kick start your night out at Hawick Museum from 7pm to 10pm. The Museum will host a fully-licensed bar and a silent disco with adult craft activities - and a dress-up photobooth with a backdrop! Tickets £5. Telephone museum to book.

Sun 29 October – March 2018 Entrance Hall Souvenirs of War - 8 Military memorabilia and war souvenirs brought back to Hawick by local servicemen and women over the last century or so. The wartime collections in Hawick Museum tell the stories of the town’s people in Britain’s wars. Sun 29 October – March 2018 Entrance Hall Remembering the Fallen Maps of Hawick showing where those who lost their lives in the Great War had lived. Created by schools, community groups and volunteers under the WW1 Saving and Sharing project banner. Sun 5 November 2017 The War Memorial Room Reopening - 9 Refurbished permanent displays. Objects, photographs and uniforms bear witness to the sacrifice and survival of Hawick men and women in wars from Napoleonic times to recent conflicts. Sun 19 November 2017 Great War Show and Tell event, 1 – 3pm - 10 Explore the museum’s great collection of First World War artefacts and the stories they tell. Close up, hands-on sessions led by museum staff and The Scots in the Great War Living History Society. Bring along your own memorabilia and share family stories. In partnership with Saving and Sharing: Stories of the Scottish Borders in World War One. The project seeks to save, record and share stories to create a lasting legacy for this and future generations, helping to understand the impact the Great War had on the Scottish Borders.

Wed 1 March – Sun 9 April 2017 I HEART SCOTLAND - 1 Rachel Maclean A Touring Show from Edinburgh Printmakers Film and print work by this year’s Scottish representative, at the 2017 Venice Biennale, the world’s most prestigious art festival. Rachel Maclean explores Scottish national identity and its founding mythologies, inventing characters that toy with age and gender and refer to an array of historical figures, contemporary politicians and national stereotypes creating a complex and surreal vision of modern Scotland. The artist is the sole actor and model in her films. The exhibition is being staged in partnership with Alchemy Film Festival, also based in Hawick, who are curating Rachel’s work at the Biennale.
