The Heritage Hub is home of the Scottish Borders Archive & Local History Service. It is an integrated archive and local studies service with a wide range of archives, publications, images and other resources relating to the history of the Scottish Borders. Facilities include a public reading room, an exhibition space and WCs. The building is fully accessible to all visitors.

isit Old Gala House, a vibrant museum and gallery nestled in the heart of the busy Borders town of Galashiels. Learn the story of this historic house and the development of the town. Dating back to 1583, this impressive building has seen over 400 years of activity and bears the fascinating traces of historic change: the painted, wood-panelled ceiling dating from 1635 is a rare example of period decoration. The house hosts a vibrant programme of visual art, educational and local interest exhibitions and events throughout the season and also offers a café with free Wi-Fi, gift shop and gardens. alliwell’s House Museum and Gallery is housed in the oldest surviving row of dwellings in Selkirk. This museum tells the story of the town’s ancient history with connections to William Wallace and the tragedy of Flodden as well as its more recent past. The internationallyrenowned Selkirk Common Riding is documented whilst other displays include a well-travelled trunk relating to the enigmatic adventures of world famous explorer, Mungo Park. The Robson Gallery hosts a vibrant programme of visual art and educational exhibitions throughout the season. Gifts, books and souvenirs are available in the ground floor shop.

S
ir Walter Scott’s Courtroom is an iconic link to the great Scottish writer. In this building Scott sat as Sheriff, dispensing justice to the town of Selkirk for nearly 30 years. This building dates from 1804 and stands in the vibrant Market Place, next to the statue dedicated to Sir Walter who was affectionately known as The Shirra (Sheriff). Visitors will enjoy the reconstructed courtroom and be intrigued by accompanying tales of past crimes, punishments and lucky escapes. In addition to displays of personal objects that once belonged to the world-famous writer of great literary works including Rob Roy and the Waverley Novels, there are fascinating items from the Royal Burgh’s rich history. Due to the age and layout of the building there is no disabled access and several steps to negotiate from street level. Souvenirs, books and gifts are available at reception desk. The Museum and Gallery present a lively programme of exhibitions in this historic building throughout the year. Hamish MacDonald DA PAI (1935- 2008), Glasgow, Scotland. Hamish studied at Glasgow School of Art between 1963 and 1967. His broad, fluid style and bold palette place him directly within the continuing lineage of the Scottish Colourist tradition. In 2008 his youngest daughter Nicola took over Hamish MacDonald Fine Art Prints, which include Giclée and lithographic prints in various sizes, signed and estate stamped limited editions. The collection also includes luxury scarves and cushions which have been designed by Nicola and are based on her father’s art work.
The annual display of artwork by Peebles Art Group members and invited artists, covering a wide variety of subjects, style and media. Many are for sale at reasonable prices. An open entry exhibition.

The Secret Tower Room explores the building’s often turbulent history from its construction at the time of the Border Reivers. The Tom Scott Room shows paintings by the noted Scottish watercolourist (1854-1927). Our shop stocks a colourful range of textiles, crafts, gifts and books.

Hand-dyed, weathered and painted fabrics are embellished with hand and machine embroidery to create textiles for the wall. The FashionABLE project started at Burnfoot Community Hub in May 2018. This course enables people aged 15 and over to learn sewing and craft skills, while making new friends. Visit the cell blocks, follow the prisoners’ stories and find out why some thought it was ‘the most comfortable jail in Scotland’. The jailer’s house is home to Jedburgh’s town museum. The Guards Gallery, tells the story of The Coldstream Guards at home and abroad from the 17th century to the present day. THE BERWICKSHIRE COUNTRY HOUSE 4
“Berwickshire was always said to have more mansions than any other county in Britain.” Between the mid-18th and late-19th centuries well over 100 country houses were built in this area. They included some of the grandest in Scotland by some of its most famous architects, but during the 20th century a quarter were demolished and many more converted to other uses. This exhibition traces the rise, decline and continued significance of ‘the Berwickshire country house.’

JIM CLARK: CHAMPION OF THE WORLD In 1963 and 1965 Jim Clark shot to fame winning two Formula One World Championships and the Indianapolis 500 miles race in 1965. Our first temporary exhibition in the new museum displays evocative images that recall these glorious seasons.

he face of Roman Scotland presented through amazing artefacts, coins and gems, telling the story of life on the Roman frontier. Trimontium is the site of a Roman fort and settlement that lies just outside Newstead, to the east of Melrose. The museum is the only one in

TRIMONTIUM ROMAN HERITAGE WALKS During our open season (April - October), we run a series of walks to the site of Trimontium, near Newstead. These walks are led by our expert volunteer guides who will relate the history of Trimontium as well as other points of interest along the route. The walk covers 8 kilometres (5 miles) of easy terrain, although stout footwear is recommended. We also run a series of guided walks to Old Melrose, which was a special place for the indigenous population, known by the Romans, and also the site of a Celtic Abbey. TRIMONTIUM SPRING 2019 LECTURE SERIES: “An Eye on the Past” Scotland dedicated to the Romans, where visitors can experience what life was like for the people who lived in this outpost on the frontier of the Roman Empire. Many objects from the original excavations are on display, including tools used by soldiers to build the fort, remains of Roman glassmaking, examples of the pottery used by officers for dining, a replica cavalry saddle, replica armour, gaming pieces, and much more. One of the most fascinating items on display is the 228 silver coin hoard from Synton. The native population is not forgotten, and their way of life is explored, with examples of native pottery and a look at their impressive hill forts in the area. Each year a loan is arranged to highlight an aspect of Roman life, this year consisting of 15 pieces of the bronze Ruberslaw Hoard.

The museum acts not only as a display telling the story of the fort and the people who lived in and around it, but also as a focus for the Trust’s many other activities: school visits, a meeting place for guided walks to the site of the fort, and as the venue for the series of spring and autumn lectures.
Thu 9 May THE MAKING OF A MODERN MUSEUM David Campbell, of renowned Campbell & Co (Skara Brae, Surgeon’s Hall Edinburgh, Biggar Museum, McManus Museum Dundee, Birmingham Museum, and many more) shares with us his vision for our Trimontium renovation project.
Plans are in an advanced state to renovate and hopefully extend the museum in 2020 to accommodate a range of new finds, many of which have been in store in Edinburgh since the groundbreaking excavations in the early 20th century by local amateur archaeologist James Curle.

Thu 2 May THE VINDOLANDA TRUST: APPROACHING 50 YEARS - Barbara Birley, Curator of the Vindolanda Trust, and director of conservation at this stunning site, will give us the low down on the highs of an independent museum of international importance.
