BeFriend If you follow current affairs, you will know that loneliness is now known to be a risk to health and that many people experience it. The high profile Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness found that 1 in 3 people aged over 75 say that their feelings of loneliness are out of their control. That’s where projects like BeFriend come in. BeFriend is a Duns-based, well established project that provides companionship for older people in Kelso and Berwickshire. We help people to feel less lonely, less isolated, and to feel more connected to their communities. We are looking for people to give some of their own time to help vulnerable, isolated, older people. Alex, one of our befrienders, says, “I’m really glad I became part of the befrienders. I hope I have a befriender when I’m older.”

Wellbeing is high on our agenda and our Health and Fitness services provide a range of gyms, fitness classes and other health programmes to everyone who lives in, or visits, the Borders. We have different levels of gym memberships to suit your needs, from our 'pay as you go' option right through to the extensive ‘One Club’ membership – giving you access to our gyms, swimming pools and fitness classes across all of our facilities. Swimming is not just a sport – it’s a life skill! Across Live Borders we offer an extensive swimming programme suitable for all ages and abilities. From adult and baby classes right through to elite swimming training, we can cater for you across our six swimming pools. The biggest of the swimming programmes is ‘Learn 2 Swim’ with over 3,000 young participants learning the fundamental skills of swimming and water safety and we have lots more spaces available for new participants. Learn 2 Swim, aligned with Scottish Swimming’s National Framework, offers classes for children of every age, irrespective of their ability. The programme criteria can take a child who has never been in the water before and guide them through the early stages of skills development on to improving the quality of stroke technique and basic life support. We have play and leisure for the little ones covered across the Borders! Whether that’s our soft plays, Learn 2 Play programme, fun activities or our popular Holiday Activity Camps. We have two soft play facilities that offer an exciting time of climbing, sliding, jumping and playing for kids. Treasure Land is a multi-level pirate-themed soft play at Teviotdale Leisure Centre in Hawick, with a fab cafÊ and take away homemade pizzas! Tumbliboo offers fantastic fun for little ones at the Gytes Leisure Centre in Peebles. Along with our popular Mini Gymnastics programme, Live Borders has introduced Multi Sports as part of our Learn 2 Play activities. Boys and girls from 18 months to 5 years can experience and develop their skills across both programmes whether it be gymnastics or across a variety of sports including football, tennis, basketball, badminton, athletics and much more. Also on offer are our Pop-Up Play sessions! These include Inflatable Sessions, Neon Sports, Nerforce and Roller Skating moving their way across our town halls and leisure centres on weekends and over holiday periods. The Holiday Activity Camps for P1 to P7 are growing in popularity and demand. Sport and art collide for fun-filled days with activities including athletics, crafts, tennis, gymnastics, inflatable sessions and a disco, all with the aim of making sure kids are healthier, happier and stronger. We run our Holiday Camps across Borders towns during some school holiday periods.

Looking for a great day out? The Scottish Borders has a rich history and culture which can be explored across our museums and galleries. Find out about some of Scotland’s famous names and how their lives are linked to the Borders. The tragic story of Mary Queen of Scots is told at the visitor centre in Jedburgh. The Borders’ connection to great Scottish writers like Sir Walter Scott can be uncovered at the courtroom in Selkirk, as well as St. Ronan’s Wells in Innerleithen. The life and death of motorcycle racing legends Jimmie Guthrie and Steve Hislop are exhibited in Hawick Museum and one of F1s all-time-greats, Jim Clark, is celebrated at the new Jim Clark Motorsport Museum in Duns. If art is your thing, then four of the museums house gallery spaces which host an ever-changing programme of contemporary visual art and craft exhibitions. Additionally, there are some permanent displays like that of Tom Scott’s beautiful paintings which are shown at Borders Textile Towerhouse in Hawick. If you’re looking for a day out with your family or a few quiet hours to yourself, our museums and galleries provide a wonderful, educational experience and they’re totally free (excluding Jim Clark Motorsport Museum), with donations welcome.
