How To Make A Killing in Bollywood by Northumberland Theatre Company Written by and starring NTC favourite, Umar Ahmed (Rallying Round, Rumpelstiltskin, Grimm Tales and The Old Curiosity Shop) this is a brand new musical comedy about two best friends who decide to quit their jobs in a fast food restaurant and head to Bollywood in search of fame and fortune. A play about friendship and ambition and the lengths people will go to realise their dreams, punctuated throughout with a fantastic sound track and infectious injections of Bollywood dance moves. From the minute the actors come bounding onto stage their exuberance reverberates through the auditorium catching everyone up in this tale of ambition, hope, friendship and Bollywood. Brilliantly choreographed and superbly acted against a simple backdrop, this show proves you don’t need a big budget to produce a big hit. (Fringe Review)

The Songs of 1965-75: Scenes from a Well-Spent Youth by Tim Benton A tribute to songs written or made famous by Dusty Springfield, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Gene Pitney, The Monkees, Joni Mitchell, Carole King and more performed by Tim Benton a seasoned performer from London to New Zealand! For of a ‘certain age’ it’s fascinating exploring what they mean to us 40-50 years on. For example, the peace, love and hope promised by the ‘Age of Aquarius’ and flower power in 1967 seems innocent and poignant today. And Bob Dylan’s ‘Times’ – well, were they ever really ‘A-Changing’? For younger audience members, it’s a chance to discover great ‘new’ songs

from an exciting time in music spanning the British Invasion, Motown, Country, Rock, singer-songwriters and much more. A beautiful, powerful, emotive voice…. Benton finds the drama. Classic rock/pop tunes sound just fine with a legit voice to interpret them.

CHILDREN Experts in Short Trousers by Cultured Mongrel Imagine you’re six years old and you are on your way to school, a community centre, a theatre…As you get close you notice something isn’t quite right. There are objects, clothes and even bodies all over the place. As you get closer you realise there’s been a disaster, a crash landing. As you almost trip over a body you squeal. It squeals. You jump. It jumps. And so it begins… With the help of your family you find five unruly, colourful

creatures and have to teach them how to move, how to get dressed and how to gather their things. You’ve literally got to teach them everything! They are dancing your movements to your music. GET UP AND TIE YOUR FINGERS EYEMOUTH Saturday 25th June at Eyemouth Parish Church “Get Up and Tie Your Fingers Eyemouth” tells the story of Eyemouth and the 1881 Fishing Disaster, performed through singing, narration and dance by more than fifty members of the Eyemouth community, of all ages. Before the performance began, archive films of Eyemouth and the herring fishing were screened. The singers and narrators of all ages processed onto the

improvised stage with the young dancers darting across the stage with hurricane lamps. The singing and the spoken word narration were of the highest quality and clarity and took us the audience convincingly into the storm of 1881 with its

tremendous loss of lives. The young dancers came running from the back of the hall, using their shawls or long strips of material to recreate the storm of 1881 and this was entirely effective in my view. The use of a solo fiddle played by Keir Logan was powerful. The performance was strong and moving, with the local accents and people contributing authenticity to this

recreation of their community’s tragedy. The young dancers performed with a confidence and natural grace that belied their youth and the short period they had to prepare for the performance. I am sure that the professional support in

terms of writing, music and direction helped to create a powerful and convincing artistic performance, which was inspired by a production of “Follow the Herring” in 2014. This performance was created, produced and performed by members of the Eyemouth community with professional support and direction from the writer Ann Coburn, composer, Karen Wimhurst, musical director and producer, Eleanor Logan, director, Fiona MacPherson, Simon Henderson lighting design and stage management and choreographer, Liz Pavey with assistance from Barbara Prater and members of the steering group. The group were also supported by Eyemouth Museum, Eyemouth High School and Eyemouth Parish Church where the performance took place with funding from Creative Scotland, the Borders Live Touring Scheme and the University of Northumbria. WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A T JUNCTION MisFits Theatre, Stichill Village Hall, Saturday 16th July 2016 An appreciative audience in Stichill Village Hall enjoyed an excellent performance by Fiona Knowles as she played all the characters in ‘Women on the Verge of a T Junction’. With help from minimal props, but with considerable flair, Fiona transformed herself into four very different women, to build a story both moving

and funny. It was difficult to believe that Fiona was the only performer as she swiched personality with the change of a hat and told with pathos and humour, the story of the aftermath of a car crash. It was a delightful evening supported by Borders Live Touring, which enables small village halls like Stichill to

access good drama and music. Fiona was ably stage managed by Roddy Simpson. The two, together with a perceptive script by Rona Munro, provided Stichill village with a memorable evening. Never was a car crash such a joy to behold! L Anderson

Competition open to all Boccia players with a physical or learning disability. Boccia is a target sport, similar to lawn bowls, the aim is to throw, roll, kick or use a ramp, to get your balls closer to the white ‘Jack’. UKCC TENNIS LEVEL 1 DATES: 26th / 27th August, Assessment day 8th October 2016 TIME: 9am – 5pm VENUE: Earlston High School 64 What’s On Autumn 2016

COST: £205 CONTACT: Alan Oliver, Sports Development Officer, 01896661166 The LTA Level 1 Coach Assistant Qualification is the first step on the LTA Coaching Pathway. It is aimed at people looking to work as a coaching assistant at a club or other tennis venue, such as a park or a school. The qualification is an assessed course. Upon successful completion candidates will be able to work as an assistant coach alongside a minimum of a Level 2 Accredited Coach in a beginner coaching session. The course is 3 days in duration, split over a minimum period of 4 weeks and will cover areas such as Mini Tennis, technique, tactics, communication, organisation, demonstrations, safeguarding, running competitive events and organising activity sessions. Additionally, the course

requires candidates to complete a portfolio and gain a minimum of three hours experience assisting an LTA Accredited coach between the second and third day of the course. Coaches who hold a Level 1 Coach Assistant Qualification are not qualified to coach independently, but will be able to lead parts of a coaching session on an adjacent court to a Level 2 or above coach. They can also run a tennis activity session that has been set up by the Head Coach (Level 3 or above). A tennis activity session refers to organised play or competition facilitated by a coach through organising equipment, allocating space, and suggesting some ideas for activities. The key distinction between a coaching session and activity session is that no formal coaching instructions (for example technical instruction) are given. Course Pre-requisites • Be a minimum of 16 years old on the first day of the course. • Have a signed letter of

deployment from the club where coaching experience will be undertaken or request a letter of deployment from the Course Provider. Candidates must attend all the sessions of the course at the same venue and pass all elements of assessment to be successful. Exemptions If you hold a UKCC endorsed, 1st4sport awarded Level 2 in another sport you can bypass Level 1 and take Level 2. If you hold a teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent) specialising in P.E. then you can bypass Level 1 and take Level 2. An Independent Scottish Borders Cultural Forum The Scottish Borders Cultural Forum is an independent forum and has evolved out of a series of discussions and workshops attended by a broad range of individuals and organisations from the local cultural sector and is open to anyone interested in the aims and values of the Forum. The Scottish Borders Cultural Forum supports the work of the local cultural sector by creating a space for networking, sharing concerns, ideas and resources and finding solutions to common problems. It is a champion not just for the cultural sector but also for culture’s role in the economy, environment, education, health and the quality of life that is so important to the Scottish Borders. The Cultural Forum is concerned principally with the arts, heritage, museums, libraries, creative industries, traditional culture and festivals, though this list is not exclusive. The Forum has monthly gatherings, which aim to be: • Informal • Open • Inclusive • Welcoming • Interesting • Relevant • Enjoyable

The monthly gatherings move around the Borders and link with a key cultural event or venue in each area, so that the gatherings offer: a social space, an opportunity to see something interesting, and an opportunity to have a discussion focusing on sharing information and focusing on key opportunities or issues.

UPCOMING GATHERINGS: September Gathering • The Hippodrome, Eyemouth, 1 September, 6-8pm. To coincide with ‘Making Good Places’ architecture exhibition October Gathering • WASPS Studios, Selkirk, 30th September. To coincide with WASPS Open Studios weekend, and Selkirk Sessions. The Cultural Forum is

evolving, so this is a chance for you to become involved and shape the Forum – we are not expecting that everyone can make each monthly gathering, rather you can dip in and out. As the Cultural Forum is at an early stage and doesn’t have a dedicated web presence, it is being supported by the Creative Arts Business Network (CABN), Arts Development, Live Borders. You can find information about the Forum and monthly gatherings on the CABN website www.cabn.info or by e-mailing Kay McCluskey on the e-mail below. MEMBERSHIP The Cultural Forum is a membership body open to all organisations and individuals who share its purpose and values. No distinction is made between professional and amateur, commercial or voluntary groups. Membership is free and to join, simply e-mail Kay.McCluskey@ liveborders1.org.uk with your name, business or organisation name, and we will keep in touch with you about all Cultural Forum activities. Dating back to 1583, this impressive building has seen over 400 years of activity and bears the fascinating traces of historic change: the painted, woodenpanelled ceiling dating from 1635 is a rare survival in Scotland, and

it compares wonderfully with the ornate 18th century plaster ceiling in an adjoining room. Other rooms carry displays and information on the history of the local area and its enterprising people. The internationally renowned Selkirk Common Riding is documented in a dedicated room on the first floor. This compact museum tells the story of the town’s ancient history with connections to William Wallace and the tragedy of Flodden as well as its more recent past.
