The law offices of Zick, Voss, Politte & Richardson, P.C. wish good luck to all Borgia seniors!

A letter from the editor: It is an honor to present to you The Outlet’s Senior Issue for Class of 2012! As always, a lot of hard work went into seeing this magazine to print, but putting together this issue was particularly special for me. Having served as the editor in chief for the past two years and a staff writer for the two before that, I was sad to know I was working on my last issue of The Outlet. Borgia’s journalism department has come a long way since my first article ran in the December 2008 edition of the newspaper. When I first joined the newspaper class, we had a staff of seven who put out a 12-page, black and white newspaper called The Knightly News. Since then, (after attending national journalism conferences in New York City and workshops at Webster University and Mizzou) the publication has been renamed The Outlet; the format has changed to a 40-page, color news magazine with an accompanying Web site and Facebook page; our MacLab has been expanded and our outdated software updated; the staff has grown to 18 members; and the Sponsors of Student Publications have named The Outlet a superior news magazine two years in a row. I feel very blessed to have been a part of this transformation. A huge thank-you goes out to our advisor, Ms. Dana Volkman, for encouraging and guiding our staff; the SFBRHS administration for investing in journalism education; our advertisers for providing us with the funds to send our work to the presses; The Missourian for diligently working with us to print our paper; and, of course, all of the students, faculty and friends who have taken interest in The Outlet and made our hard work worthwhile! It’s hard to let go of The Outlet, but I know next year will hold great things for Borgia journalism. I will be turning over my position of editor in chief to my good friend and current Outlet business manager, Joan Roubian, who has proven this year to be an incredibly hard worker with some great ideas up her sleeve. I can’t wait to see what she and next year’s staff have in store, which means I expect a copy of every issue to be mailed to my dorm at Mizzou! :) Thanks for a great four years! -Connor Voss Outlet Editor in Chief

Math teacher Kathy Wright and physical education teacher Steve Lahay will retire after this school year. Between both of these teachers, they have 48 years of teaching experience at Borgia. Blake Van Leer Outlet Staff Writer

Mrs. Kathy Wright has taught many subjects at Borgia. In 1976, Wright was a substitute teacher who taught mainly science. She then came back in 1982 as a substitute teacher, but this time she taught geometry and algebra. In 1990, Wright was hired as a part-time teacher of Intro to Algebra I, General Science and Physical Science after leaving her job at East Central College. The next year, Mrs. Wright was hired as a full-time teacher. Most teachers at Borgia are limited to teaching a certain grade. Wright, on the other hand, has taught classes of freshmen to seniors in the same semester. “My favorite part of teaching here at Borgia is that I get to teach all levels of classes,” said Wright. Although teaching many classes meant more preparations, she enjoyed the variety. In 2009, Wright taught only math courses, which was preferable for her. In retiring, she notes she will miss her fellow teachers. “Being able to teach here along with the other faculty members is one of my favorite parts of Borgia,” said Wright. After retirement, Wright looks forward to enjoying her free time by swimming daily at the YMCA and returning as a part-time math teacher or tutor. In the meantime, she plans to spending more time with her grandchildren.

Another teacher who will be retiring this year is Mr. Steve Lahay. Lahay started teaching at Borgia in 1978. He has been a physical education teacher to the Recreational Activities teacher. “I coached sports for 22 years,” said Lahay. He has coached football, girls basketball and girls/boys soccer. Lahay has also refereed soccer. Lahay plans to travel and spend time with his family after retirement. He also plans to continue his other job as a fulltime limo and bus driver. Lahay has been the bus driver for Borgia and has also driven to other states for events such as Borgia’s ski trips. He also plans on taking more days off and relaxing. Although he looks forward to retirement, Lahay will miss being at Borgia every day. “It is a place where people want their school to be a good place,” said Lahay. “We are very lucky here.” He also enjoys the family-oriented, small-town atmosphere of Borgia. “We are losing two good and dedicated people,” SFBRHS principal Dr. Brad Heger said of Wright and Lahay. Heger hopes they will visit SFBRHS on occasion. Teacher Mike Kroeker will miss his co-workers, as well. “I think Borgia’s next technology initiative should be to hologram Coach Lahay so he never retires,” Kroeker joked.

Students Say Farewell “(Mr. Lahay and Mrs. Wright) have both contributed to the school in ways words could never express and they will always be a part of the Borgia family.” -Alex Smith, junior “Mr. Lahay is my advisor and I know my whole advisement will miss him next year.” -Emma Ritter, sophomore “I’m sad that later generations will never hear ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame.’” -Katelyn Schwoeppe, senior “Mrs. Wright was one of the sweetest ladies I have ever met. I will be sad when she leaves. The way that she holds her temper and is always happy is one of her greatest qualities. I will miss her a lot.”- George Meyer, junior “I love when Mr. Lahay tells us to close our eyes and then plays a song from his iPad in tribute to something; it was very touching, and I’m disappointed that others won’t be able to experience that.” -Nicole Holzem, senior

Borgia Fest Hosts Second Annual Duane Haddox Soccer Tournament Ashley Roberts

Outlet Staff Writer

In the midst of the third annual Borgia Fest on Saturday, April 28, pick-up soccer teams competed to win the Second Annual Duane Haddox Memorial Soccer Tournament. Teams consisted of people all ages from the Washington area, as well as Bogia soccer alumni. The first three-on-three game started at 10 a.m., after the completion of the Melanoma Miles for Mike Walk/Run that was also held in conjunction with Borgia Fest. The last game finished up around 6 p.m. Nearly 100 coed players on 24 teams competed in the tournament and almost 200 spectators cheered in the stands. T-shirts were sold for $10, and it was free to watch the game. A Matthew Pickens jersey was raffled off, as well as 2 soccer balls and a video game. Although participation was open to anyone, most players were Borgia alumni. The team entry fee was $60. Each participant received a free T-shirt for playing. The event helped raise $3,000. Funds were raised to benefit the Coach Haddox Memorial Scholarship Fund. A SFBRHS graduate of the Class of 1977, Coach Duane Haddox was the athletic director and dean of students at SFBRHS for 10 years. He was a respected member of the Borgia family and staff. He passed away June 28, 2010. Haddox’s family established the tournament to fund a Borgia scholarship in his name. Each year the $500 scholarship is awarded to an SFBRHS student who is “hardworking, determined and exhibits good sportsmanship in all areas of life.” The scholarship was first given last year to Tony Helfrich, junior.

Shown above is the tournament logo, displayed on the t-shirts given to the participants.

The Haddox family takes a moment to congratulate the winners of the Second Annual Duane Haddox Memorial Soccer Tournament. The day of the tounament began with an emotional prayer in memory of those in the Borgia community who have passed, especially Duane Haddox, Ella Neier and Justin Brune. Trini Haddox, Duane Haddox’s daughter, had a large part in organizing the event. “Putting it together is just a big tribute to my dad,” she said. In the morning the weather was clear but overcast. It sprinkled in the evening, but the day was still filled with fun, music and smiles. The only person who was injured was Andrew Eggert, SFBRHS English teacher. “I was just trying to stop a pass to my right, and when I lunged for it my knee popped and I fell,” he said. Eggert could be seen on crutches the next few days of school. Other players walked away with minor scrapes and bruises. The team “Eassora” advanced and won many games. Derek Schriewer, Alan Loy and Teddy Brinker, all Borgia alumni, and James Hawkinson, a non-Borgia student were all part of this team. They eventually went on to win the entire tournament. Both the participants and the Haddox family alike are looking forward to next year’s tournament. The Outlet 9

Lending a Helping Hand

n Borgia Students Travel to Honduras for Mission Trip A Commentary by Anastasia Ratcliff, Outlet Staff Writer

My dogs, Hunter and Sparky, are by no means spoiled. By day, they live comfortably outside with the freedom to roam about; at night, they sleep on dog beds in our basement garage. We feed them twice a day and during the summer they get the occasional pampering in the form of dog treats and baths. Generally speaking, Hunter and Sparky are just average household pets. Comparatively, Hunter and Sparky are more fortunate than 75 percent of the people in Honduras. My dogs have food in their bellies and a roof over their head in rough conditions, whereas the majority of Hondurans live below the poverty line and are unable to meet basic needs, such as food or shelter. This past March, several Borgia students and I had the opportunity to travel with Washington Overseas Mission to Honduras on a medical, dental and construction brigade. Our group was divided into two medical and dental teams. Borgia students Katie Haskins, senior; Connor Lebsack, junior; and Parker DuMontier, sophomore, were assigned to the yellow team while I was assigned to the red team. I spent the first part of my week distributing parasite medication. Everyone who came through to see a doctor or dentist had to first stop at the parasite station, so I had the opportunity to see almost everyone who came through. (I don’t speak an ounce of Spanish, so I luckily had a translator who helped me communicate with the people.) The kids were by far my favorite part. They were hands-down among some of the cutest and most cheerful children I have ever met. It was eye-opening for me to see how grateful and kind these kids were despite their conditions. One girl had nothing but an old Halloween princess costume to wear, yet she never stopped smiling and even asked me if there was anything I needed. I was shocked; here I was, in the middle of a third-world country, and a girl with next to nothing was concerned with making sure I was comfortable. This type of selflessness is what more of the world needs. I am as guilty as anyone for not wanting to share my time or things with others, yet this girl inspired me to try to be more giving and considerate of others, especially since I have the means and opportunities. During the second part of the trip, I worked with optics and medical assistance. Back home, waiting an extra 20 minutes for a doctor seems like an unreasonable eternity. In Honduras, people would stand out in the hot sun for up to three hours for the opportunity to see a doctor who may or may not be able to help them. Sometimes, all the people needed was someone to listen to their problems, even if they weren’t physical. A lady around 30 years old came in for one of her children and we noticed a slightly infected area on her ear. One of our excellent translators sat down and talked with her for a short while before the woman started crying. Apparently she was married at a commonly young age, around 13 or 14, and her husband was very abusive. The scar on her ear came from him hitting her and yanking out one of her earrings. On top of the domestic violence, she had to manage five moderately young children. To me, it isn’t fair. It isn’t fair for human beings to live in such atrocious environments. Sometimes, when we would distribute medicine that needed to be taken with a meal, people would decline, saying they didn’t have any food to take it with. It is our duty as Christians to take care of those less fortunate than we are. While donations and money are greatly beneficial, I strongly encourage everyone to go on a mission trip at least once in their lifetime. Going to Honduras was definitely one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The students, doctors, dentists and translators took time out of their busy schedules to distribute love and care to those in need without ever expecting anything in return. However, the appreciation, love, experiences and memories the people of Honduras gave to our teams is worth so much more than we could ever give them. 10 | The Outlet

Maxwell Delays Colle ge to Pursue Passion s Outlet Editor in Chief

While most of Borgia’s Class of 2012 will enter college as members of a Class of 2016, Katie Maxwell declares herself a proud future member of the Class of 2017. Before starting at St. Mary’s College in the fall of 2013, Maxwell will be putting her undergraduate studies on hold for a year to pursue her two biggest passions. “I want to go on an archaeological dig and I also want to work on my golf game,” she said. “I was afraid that if I went straight into college, I’d never get the chance to do things like this.” In the fall of 2012, Maxwell will take part in archaeological digs in Spain and France. Specifically, she will be working with the “Caves and Castles” series of digs, which is a three-week volunteer program sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America. “I’ve always been really interested in history in general— ancient history and prehistory, in particular, so I can’t wait to participate in a real dig,” she said. “Not to mention, I’ll be able to meet people my age who are interested in (archaeology), as well as network with adults in the field.” The benefits of this experience will carry over into Maxwell’s college years, as well. As a requirement for her major in anthropology, or the study of human cultures and their development, she will have to take part in field studies before she can graduate. “By participating in these digs, I’ll be getting some of this work done before I even start college,” she said. Since few universities offer degrees in anthropology, Maxwell’s college choices were limited. When she learned about St. Mary’s College, the all-girl sister school of the University of Notre Dame, she knew it was the one for her. “It’s a great mix of everything I was looking for—it has 18 | The Outlet

an anthropology program, a great golf team, and it’s Catholic,” she said. After returning home from Spain and France, Maxwell will devote a majority of her time to improving her golf game before she takes her spot on the golf team at St. Mary’s. “St. Mary’s is a D3 (school), but it has one of the top 10 womens golf teams in the NCAA Division 3,” she said. “It’s very competitive, so I want to practice as much as I can.” Locally, she will be taking golf lessons with Barbara Blanchard throughout the year. Maxwell will also be attending a Nike-sponsored golf camp, as well as Annika Academy, a nationally renowned, week-long intensive camp run by Annika Sorenstam, one of the most successful players ever to play in the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). “Annika doesn’t play professionally anymore, but she was huge a couple years ago. When she retired, she opened her own academy in Florida,” Maxwell said. “It’s run off of her own golf course by her own golf professionals, trainers and her sister.” Although Maxwell admits her plans to delay college for a year are “definitely off the beaten track,” she “really didn’t have to do much convincing” when it came to getting her parents on board with her plans for next year. “My parents are golf fans and huge history buffs, so when we were talking about college, I just kind of slowly brought up my idea and they were all for it,” she said. “It’s been nice having their support.” As this year comes to a close, Maxwell couldn’t be more excited for her eventful year to come. “When I was thinking about what I wanted to do after high school, I was going back and forth on what to do,” she said. “Then it finally hit me— this is my opportunity to do something that I’m really passionate about.”

Dear Connor,

Thank you for your countless hours of hard work during the past three years. Your dedication and eye for perfection has changed Borgia’s regular newspaper into a “superior overall” news magazine for two years in a row, and it has not gone unnoticed. From staying until 11 at night to make final touches, to Friday afternoon sonic runs and paper distributions, you have been an absolute joy to work with. Your talent, ability to remain calm under immense stress, and nack for knowing exactly what to say will all be sincerely missed. Good luck with your journalism major at Mizzou next year; we’re positive that you’ll be just as, if not more, successful as a Tiger. Congratulations! Sincerely, The Outlet Staff

Rookie Mistakes:

Outlet Alumni Warn Class of 2012

Joan Roubian Outlet Business Manager

High school freshmen aren’t the only ones who make rookie mistakes. This fall, Borgia’s Class of 2012 will be back at the bottom of the totem pole. But not to worry-- 2011 Borgia Outlet alumni offer a little advice to keep the social faux pas to a minimum.

private out-of-state

Living away from home is an adventure

The biggest mistake a freshman can make is over-committing themselves to one specific thing; this could be a boyfriend/girlfriend, a group of friends, extracurriculars or even a class schedule exceeding 18 hours. Look out for wanting to try new things just for the sake of trying new things. Living away from home is an adventure and college life will bring tons of new experiences naturally; there’s no need to force it. I am a member of a household, which is essentially a Catholic fraternity. I love my brothers, both underclassmen and upperclassmen, and have gotten really close to them in only a semester and a half. Joining has been the best college decision I’ve made so far. If you are going to rush, look at the lifestyles different fraternities and sororities live and if that is honestly the lifestyle you want, go for it. Embarrassing story: A group of us were waiting at Nathan Rogers a busy intersection in the East Village and the crosswalk sign Ave Maria University, FL. had been blinking for a while, so my friend and I thought we could make it across in time... we didn’t. I did a dive headfirst into the middle of moving traffic. Lesson to learn: pay attention to traffic signals. Another and more common embarrassing story... I Keep the “cool-kid-in-college” hadn’t opened the novel I was supposed to read for my comp class. I had managed getting through the entire semester attitude to a minimum without being called on. At a lull in the discussion, I went There are two things that I’d tell incoming colto brush the hair out of my eyes and my professor thought I lege freshman to look out for: First, don’t forget was raising my hand. I denied it, but he still made me answer about school. I find that often times I work my his question about the climax of the plot. I had no idea what calendar around social activities rather than schoolhe was talking about and mumbled something indiscernible. work. While there is always something to do, learn how to say no-Lesson: reading assignments are homework. You’ll have to otherwise you will fall behind in your classes and it will come back eventually write a fifteen-page thesis on them. to haunt you. Second, try to keep the “cool-kid-in-college” attitude

to a minimum. I had it. You’ll have it, too, but try to keep it in check. No one wants to be remembered as “that stupid freshman,” especially if you’re going to a small school. Joining a sorority was the BEST decision I’ve made and I recommend it to everyone. I went into the recruitment process a little skeptical if it was the right decision for me, but I couldn’t be more thankful that I stuck with it. I’ve made so many friends both in my own sorority as well as the other sororities and fraternities on campus. My best memories from this year have all involved Greek life in some way or another. More Flags, More Fun.

Juniors Christian Sullivan, Andrew Obermark, Sydney Skubic and senior Kyle Gisburne will spend their summer breaks making a little cash at Six Flags. Sullivan and Obermark were both selected to play parts in Six Flags shows. Obermark will be acting in “The Blazin’ Imbeciles... What’s the Hold up?” “Our first rehearsal is May 11, and we open up the show to the public mid-June,” said Obermark. Sullivan is playing the role of “Griffin” in the show “Sing Out,” also opening in mid-June at the Palace Theater. Sullivan has performed in past shows at the park, including “Love at First Fright,” which took

place during “Fright Fest” last October. “Honestly, it’s not about the money; it’s about being able to do what I love to do every day,” he said. Junior Sydney Skubic and senior Kyle Gisburne will act as characters in the theme park, by dressing up and greeting customers. For these two, playing a role is no “walk in the park.” Both Skubic and Gisburne had to attend a training session lasting seven hours. “Almost everyone loves Six Flags,” said Skubic. “Why would anyone turn a job down there?” For a list of shows and times, visit www. sixflags.com.

walde wades in the water

The weather can get hot here in Missouri, so the Washington Aquatics Complex can be a busy place.

Senior Charlie Walde will work as a lifeguard this summer at the city pool. For Walde, the job is enjoyable because the job is not overly stressful. “We are trained for CPR, first aid and water safety,” he said. Pool season passes and punch cards are on sale now. For more information, call 636-390-1080.

moroney lives mas

Patrick Moroney, senior, will be making sure the “Crunchwrap Supreme” or “Nachos Bell Grande” is made to perfection at the Taco Bell in Union, where he works as a cook. “Any order that comes through the drive-thru is mine,” he said. Moroney’s family owns several Taco Bell restaurants in the area.

huber Makes It Easy

Senior Dominic Huber fulfills the Schnucks promise of “We Make It Easy.” After working at the store for a year, Huber has had the opportunity to meet many people. He likes his co-workers and enjoys the many perks of being a “bag boy.” “Three times I have a found a wallet in the carts,” said Huber. “I took them to customer assistance and when the owners came to get them, I (received) a reward for it.” Dominic will continue his job until he leaves for college at the end of the summer.

cut along the dotted line.

Summer is an exciting time for new adventures and different experiences. However, some students choose to sleep away their summer. They miss out on the fresh air and the bright sun. There are many other things to do than just sitting in front of the television or iPad.To avoid just another boring summer, try to see how many things you can complete on this Summer Bucket List!

Take out a blanket and sleep under the stars. "Go Green" and plant a garden. Check the forecast for stormy weather. If its a sunny day, make a mural out of sidewalk chalk. Get your friends together for a weekly movie night. Be exotic and try a different fruit or vegetable every week. Play trivia games with your family. Visit the St. Louis Zoo (admission is free!). Make your mark and carve your name into a tree. Jump into a pool fully dressed. On a windy day, go to the park and fly a kite. Practice a sport you have never tried before. Take a carefree road trip on a Saturday afternoon. See how many fireflies you can catch in a jar. (don't forget to poke holes in the lid!) Have a glow stick fight. Grab some marshmallows for smores and pitch a tent to camp out in your backyard. Go to a concert. (Includes any WashingtonTown and Country event.) Have a picnic in the park. Go mini golfing and try to get a hole in one. Jump on a trampoline with sprinklers underneath. Take a bike ride on the KatyTrail.
