Editor’s Note Welcome to the year 2020! Other than being a numerically auspicious date that stands as a gateway of a fresh new decade, we have achieved another outstanding milestone by powering through 2019. In the previous year, we applaud the frontier of artists that emerged into a new horizon, and not forgetting our very own homegrown graphic artists and filmmakers who also deserve an honourable mention. We have also tackled agendas on climate change and continue to make efforts to maintain a sustainable lifestyle. The recent events concerning Covid-19 struck a snag in the tourism industry resulting in a major economical drop nationwide. In light of this, we provide affordable deals to encourage domestic

tourism, especially here in Sabah. Take this opportunity to take an adventure around our beautiful Sabah and educate ourselves on the amazing cultures and traditions that we live amongst. We also feature advice and facts about the incredible habit of vaping sweeping the teenage world by storm. This staggering topic is very much deemed relevant amongst concerned parents and teachers. Our magazine has also started a new Car Culture segment where we hope to capture the car enthusiast scenes and events in Sabah. Hope you enjoy this issue!

Paddle or Die! - Kiulu White Water rafting The silver lining is that there is perhaps no better time than the present for Malaysians to visit Sabah. China travel restrictions began much earlier in Sabah It was seen as a knee jerk reaction at the time but Sabah being among the earliest to close its doors to visitors from China means the virus situation is far more controlled thus making it a safer destination to visit. 2. Less crowds and competition The last time I went home, most tourist attractions were swarmed with visitors from China and South Korea. Think about it - all those beaches and islands for you to enjoy minus the crowds.

3. Great deals on hotels From what I heard many hotels are offering very good rates, with some being the lowest they've had in years. So rather than just shacking up in the cheapest backpacker's you can find, maybe try an actual hotel, oh budget travellers.

your short skirts and alcoholic drinks without judgement or overly nosy locals.

4. What's more relaxing than the most chilled-out state in Malaysia? It's not just state pride but reality. In Sabah the locals are a lot more relaxed and less likely to throw you judgemental glances.

This year if you do visit, consider it as doing so for a cause. You need a holiday, Sabahans need some respite from the low tourist traffic.

Unlike the East Coast of West Malaysia, Sabah does not intend to impose dress codes or gender segregation. Enjoy

SUSTAINABLE & hEALTH LIVING

AQUAPONICS NO SOIL, NO WASTE

Aquaponics is the combined culture of fish and plants in recirculating water systems. It is an environmentally sustainable agricultural method based on the concepts of minimal water use and minimal impact on environmental water quality in comparison to traditional agricultural methods. The water and animal life underneath supplies everything the plants need to survive and thrive. Who does not want a food production system with endless options to grow fruit and vegetables at home? This economical and sustainable lifestyle is rapidly taking over the world by storm. Aquaponics require less space and is allows you to place plants closer to each other. Due to the fact that the plants roots are underwater, overcrowding will be prevented. Growing food using aquaponics does not involve any soil, producing fresh food without weeding. Another benefit of aquaponics is the fact that you can grow your own food without any soil pests. Aquaponics is designed in a way that prevents soil pest infestation and pesticide toxins. The recirculation of water provides the plants with a sufficient amount of water resulting in no need to constantly water your plants. You use up to 90% less water in comparison to conventional farming. The great dynamics and capacity of aquaponics makes it easy to place numerous plants in a confined space. In comparison to the production of food conventionally in the ground, aquaponics require provides you food faster and at three to four times the density. No weeding, soil pests and the amazing aquaponics system allows you to grow your own food without investing so much time. On average, aquaponics requires 66% less energy in comparison to conventional gardening. The aquaponics system can be placed at any height you like. 05 |

Therefore, bending and straining your back will not be necessary as often as conventional gardening usually entails. Your own production of food will lead to a healthier way of life. Eating natural food without any chemicals is for most people the number one reason to invest in an aquaponics system. The natural process of growing food at home balances conventional aquaculture, fish with hydroponics, plants cultivating in water. Investing in an aquaponics system makes it easy to reproduce using minimum natural resources. This lifestyle gives you the opportunity to grow food in an environmentally friendly way. Combining the production of organic vegetables and fish in natural ecosystem makes it possible to feed your entire family. Aquaponics provides you with fresh organic food all year round, spending minimum amount of time and money in order to grow your own sustainable vegetables!

HOW AQUAPONICS SYSTEM WORKS

In Sabah, special emphasis is being given to aquaculture in the Ministry’s blueprint. The future of the vegetable industry in Sabah is very bright with the introduction of nature-friendly technology that will boost both production and value of the commodities. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry would design schemes that assist farmers to go modern using green sustainable technology via aquaponic and hydroponic system. Universiti Sabah Malaysia is also doing a research on aquaponics system at the Borneo Marine Research Institute. Though this is a relatively new system in Sabah, our magazine got in touch with 2 private entrepreneurs who are already running the aquaponic system in Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan. Here’s what they have to share about their system to the general public.

UMS Aquaponics Research Mr. Michael Lee - Sandakan I discovered Aquaponics accidentally by chance while reading & researching about farming own home-grown healthy food for the family on the internet. Having being an organic grower for more than 5 years, I am always trying to improve or find new technologies in organic farming. Eventually I came across the aquaponics system. Having started an organic farming with requires a lot of man power, land and water, I find that aquaponics is very suitable for home system due to its simplicity, less maintenance and you are rewarded with fresh veggies and fish at your own doorstep. My passion now is to share and teach organic farming at home by developing a home base system that can be incorporated into your house garden. COCOA KINGDOM Cocoa Kingdom is chocolate lover’s wonderland. Located in Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu, it has been producing the best chocolate in Sabah for over 10 years. Their aim is to expose Borneo’s cocoa experience while promoting Sabah’s heritage to the world through chocolate. It is more than just a chocolate shop, rather a destination where you can learn in a fun way about the multi-stage process of turning ‘bean into bar’, view hand-made chocolates being made by the artisan work force, discover the anti-oxidant health benefits of cocoa rich chocolate and the important bit, an opportunity to sample delicious chocolate some with flavours that we guarantee new to your taste buds. Majority of Sabah’s cocoa is grown in Tawau. This is home town of Mr. Siaw Ten Hon and his family. It was Mr. Ten Hon’s father Mr Siaw Meng Kiang’s passion for growing and cultivating cocoa over many decades that led the family to producing chocolate in 2009 to establish Cocoa Kingdom.

At the entrance of Cocoa Kingdom, several cocoa trees are growing. The trees start to produce crops after three years. At 10 years the tree is mature enough to provide enough cocoa to produce on average 1kg of chocolate per annum. Harvesting is challenging as cocoa is not a seasonal crop with many visits to each tree required to gather beans that take more than six months to ripen. The farmers are nearly all smallholders with maybe just three to four acres of cacao plantation land. Visitors can then view some of the Cocoa Kingdom team making artisan chocolates, many to bespoke orders. Then it’s time for the best bit, a chance to sample some chocolate! The sizable shop showcases all of Cocoa Kingdom’s chocolate products including exotic flavours such as durian, coconut, mango, pineapple and the very popular tiramisu flavour. Nearly all are available on a ‘try before you buy’ basis with many samples available. Try locally made chocolates in variable shapes and flavours at affordable prices and sample their best sellers. TEEN VAPING Staggering

36.9% ofstartstudents on the

e-cigarettes

between the ages of

14 and 15

In vaping, a battery powered device called an e-cigarette heats a liquid into vapour that can be inhaled. The vapour may contain addictive substance such as nicotine, flavourings, plus other chemicals. What originated as a smoking cessation aid has quickly became a popular and addictive product in its own right. A GROWING TREND According to the Tobacco and E-cigarette Survey among Malaysian Adolescents 2016 (Tecma), a staggering 36.9% (compared to 3% 4 years ago) of students start on the e-cigarettes between the ages of 14 and 15, and now, we’re seeing a spike in teenage use. Easily passed-off as a thumb drive or pen, the eye-catching devices look like the latest fashion accessories. Although vaping companies emphatically deny that they are marketing to young people, critics note such features in their advertising as youthful images and colours, animation, social media influencers, and suggestions that vaping improves your social status. HEALTH RISKS On January 2018, the United State National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine released a consensus study report that reviewed over 800 different studies. The report has made it clear that the inhalation of harmful chemicals can cause irreversible lung damage and lung disease based on the following findings: • A study from the University of North Carolina found that the two primary ingredients found in e-cigarettes—propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin—are toxic to cells and that the more ingredients in an e-liquid, the greater the toxicity. • E-cigarettes produce a number of dangerous chemicals including acetaldehyde, acrolein, and formaldehyde. These aldehydes can cause lung disease, as well as cardiovascular (heart) disease. 09 |

COMMUNITY

BORNEO 360 ALIVE

E-cigarettes also contain acrolein, a herbicide primarily used to kill weeds. It can cause acute lung injury and COPD and may cause asthma and lung cancer. • Both the U.S. Surgeon General and the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine have warned about the risks of inhaling second-hand e-cigarette emissions, which are created when an e-cigarette user exhales the chemical cocktail created by e-cigarettes. • In 2016, the Surgeon General concluded that second-hand emissions contain, "nicotine; ultrafine particles; flavourings such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to serious lung disease; volatile organic compounds such as benzene, which is found in car exhaust; and heavy metals, such as nickel, tin, and lead." • The Food and Drug Administration has not found any e-cigarette to be safe and effective in helping smokers quit. A NEW ADDICTION Researches have revealed that teenagers are much more susceptible to addiction compared to adults. Some even start to have nicotine cravings after just one try. Teenagers have a higher degree of “synaptic plasticity” compared to adults. This means they are building bigger and faster connections in their brain. They can imprint on good things and bad things. For example, addiction, which is a form of learning, is faster, is stronger and longer in young people. Researchers suggest that vaping is leading youth into nicotine use and nicotine addiction, not away from it. Nicotine high lasts for less than two

hours before the craving starts. So, getting youngsters hooked on ECV is also a business tactic. The NARCC smoking prevention programme in schools mentioned that when the use of ECV is related to crimes like theft, violence, fighting, bullying, and running away from home, more effort is needed to curb the habit. Therefore, more needs to be done to prevent a new generation of nicotine addicts from emerging. In the wrong hands, E-cigarettes can also be used in marijuana and meth warns Universiti Malaya Centre of Addiction Sciences (UMCAS). AWARENESS The Education Ministry recently announced that it would intensify awareness campaigns after claims of ECV being freely distributed among students, and photos of youths vaping, went viral. More awareness campaigns need to be conducted by health scientists, educationists, politicians and non-governmental organisations, to show that ECV use is not “normal behaviour”. Campaigns can be effective they also target parents and teachers. The more you say no to children and adolescents, the more they rebel and the more they want to try it. Make them realise that sellers only want to make money by getting youths hooked on an addictive habit whether it’s nicotine or drugs. It is important that parents shouldn’t over-react if they find their child smoking or on drugs. Group activities, instead of talks, work better to impart knowledge. Plus, it’s more sustainable and continuous.

GOVERNANCE On the national political level, new Bill should be proposed to control the use of e-cigarettes, vape and shisha, says social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye. Lee, who is also senior vice-chairman of the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation, said the Bill should also take into account similar products that could influence children. About 90% of vape fluids contained nicotine which could lead to addiction. Therefore, a special prohibition under the law is needed to make it easier to curb the purchase and use of such products. He added that the National Cancer Society of Malaysia has also called for a ban on the sale of e-cigarettes to youths after reports that vape liquids are often laced with drugs. WHAT’S AHEAD? Proactive action to address the issue must be taken immediately by all parties, and especially parents. It is crucial that teens understand the possible effects of vaping on overall health, the development of the teen brain, and the potential of addiction. Based on the feedback from the Head of Discipline of a secondary school in Kota Kinabalu who prefers to remain autonomous, the issue of vaping is definitely happening and the school is constantly faced with an average of 1 vaping case per day. The current measures that the school is able to do is to raise awareness of vaping to students through talks during assembly and enforcement through penalty in accordance with the Ministry of Educations circular on ECV. The enforcement will eventually be expelled

students if caught more than 3 times. What the school hopes is more serious measures on enforcement by the government as students can easily have access to ECV and the prevention and regulation of sales of EVCs. To find out what’s happening in Kota Kinabalu, our magazine seeks some public opinions on this growing social trend John Kong – Concerned Parent The issue of vaping among teenagers has affected many, including my children, his friends, cousins whether boy or girl. Once they are hooked, he or she will go all out to conceal their ECV devices. They will also be always hiding away in their room, coughing and will drop in their performances at school. Despite multiple attempts to educate them, they don’t listen to advise and eventually be caught in school using the device and eventually be expelled. From a parent’s perspective, I feel that more programs should be done to address this very serious and troublesome social issue. The programs can focus on 2 major areas. The first is pre-addiction prevention awareness programs on health risks and dangers. The second is post-addiction rehabilitation programs that can help the child to stop their addiction through a systematic process rather than just isolating and punishing them. These affected teenagers need our help.

“the inhalation of harmful chemicals can cause irreversible lung damage and lung disease”

Associate Professor Dr. Peter Voo, Faculty of Psychology and Education Universiti Malaysia Sabah Personally, we should seek professional help to stop this vaping issue. The process of quitting vaping can be difficult if you are not sure where to start so I think the first step is to get help from professionals, the percentage to recover from these symptoms will be high if you get professional services especially in the medical profession. You can get advice and support services, there are groups that offer support in the form of counselling and motivate you to discard that habit and suggest some strategies to stop vaping. Another way is to follow a therapeutic process that can control vape intake by using a control strategy with a medical observer. In addition, friends and family support is very important, the affected children do not need to feel embarrassed or worried that your family knows you have done something wrong. Or that you feel embarrassed if their friend knows they want to quit and stop using vape. It is important for their friends and family to support and help them along the way. Friends and family members can offer words of encouragement and even help them avoid stressful situations to quit. Their friends and family are part of the reason why they need to stop being tempted to take the vape again.

"We directed children with no acting experience and shot a short film without any written lines; the story was told through their candid emotions and reactions to the directions we gave them. With "Pace", I set out to convey a message about gender, identity and the many conflicts with ourselves, no matter the age; and I am proud to have achieved that."

Born and raised in small village far from the city, she profess a young raw talent in filmmaking. Another of our Sabahan hidden gem that the local industry should take note. different lenses of these genres remain trained on that which she knows best and believes to be important. There is that adherence to a high level of quality, one that is not always seen in many films by someone still so young. There is also a fire that burns in her belly, a fierce determination means she’s not afraid to stand up to opponents, critics and university administrators in fighting for and telling her stories. What’s astounding is that they are not necessarily her stories, but the story of those who probably wouldn’t have a voice otherwise. The issue of stateless children is not a particular unknown, but to have someone explore them in a narrative context like this is more unheard of. what I have seen, heard and know of Putri also means that, even if I was undecided about her auteur status, she very much deserves to be in the discussion of who the best young filmmakers in Malaysia are. 2018 Aku Mau Skola SCAN TO WATCH VIDEO

Nadira Ilana is an award-winning film maker, activist, and writer based in Kuala Lumpur. Born and raised in Kota Kinabalu, her curiosity to understanding herself and the richness of her Dusun heritage has since profoundly inspired her in telling the stories of Sabah. Nadira was the first East Malaysian to win the Freedom Film Fest Award for Best Human Rights Documentary in 2012 for Silent Riot and has since been the voice for East Malaysian representation in the Borneo-Malaysian narrative. She obtained a BFA in Film and TV from Queensland University of Technology in 2009 before moving back to Malaysia to join the film industry. She placed Sabah on the international film map with her Big Stories Bongkud-Namaus documentary that details the heart-warming stories of the locals of Kampung Bongkud and sister-village Kampung Namaus, Ranau. Drawing inspiration from her Dusun heritage, Nadira founded her production company, TelanBulan Films with a focus of creating content dedicated to more holistic representations of the Malaysian identity. Besides making films, Nadira has organised film-related events such as Working Title Film Drinks meet-up, which was a monthly gathering for independent filmmakers and enthusiasts in Kuala Lumpur, and is now an active online group dedicated to Malaysia’s independent film scene. It was started with some friends in 2013 with the purpose of forming a network of filmmakers. She has also been invited to judge short film competitions like Pesta Film Kita in 2016, Petron Vision 2018 and the BMW Shorties. Nadira is currently a FINAS Panel Advisor representing Sabah and young filmmakers.

KENJI CHAI Street Grafitti

Graffiti is sometimes a misunderstood art form; however it makes art so accessible and gives a certain space character and poise. Sandakan-born artist, Kenji Chai has established himself as one of Malaysia’s most prolific and versatile illustrators garnering admiration from the art community. His specialty is creating artworks using cute and vibrant characters and combining elements of pop culture, fictional censorship, and a positive mental attitude, layered by scenes of mischief. He was once a graphic designer getting by with a 9-to-5 job until he took the risk of leaving his fulltime job to pursue his passion and share his artwork with a broader audience. Seeking to rediscover is own interest in painting and freedom of expression, Chai turned to graffiti. He believes that street art can enliven a place with aesthetic qualities, and if applied in the right context, it adorns a place with positive energy. Kenji Chai’s graffiti work frequently treads upon the subjects of nature and animals because these objects aren’t going to be around forever and through his artwork is how he hopes to preserve them. When he isn’t immersed in his art, he loves travelling. Travelling helps to widen his horizon and broaden his perspective of live as he gets to meet people of various cultures. He gets ideas rom clothing, to food, to entertainment, and architecture. All these aspects provide insights on what can be portrayed in his new graffiti art that may move hearts. After all, art is a language that plays an important role in uniting people of different nations and cultures together as a whole. Besides that, on a regular basis, movies also give Chai inspiration as imagination is limitless. BORNEO 360 ALIVE

Modern Classic Cars - The Sweet Spot of Motoring What is Car Culture?

Car culture celebrates cars. Car culture is about the unique ways in which cars have transformed our daily lives and the environment through the usage of cars around the world. It is the feeling you get when you wake up early in the morning eager to get out of the house for a drive. It is a lifestyle built around using cars. It can be in the form of art, collection, social status, iconic, sport, performance and more. This can be seen in the growth of car culture conventions and car shows around the world.

Modern Classics Car Culture

Although emission control has come into play for a more sustainable future, modern cars are designed by computers which are more efficient, lower emission and electrically powered. More safety features and more computer assisted functions were added requiring less human input, fake exhaust sound and eventually autonomous driving. Modern cars however have become very similar in shape and design. Does this mean that old cars will eventually be scrapped and forever be forgotten as efficiency and sustainability takes over? Exactly the opposite is happening. Now it’s just so much cooler and has so much more depth, value, meaning to have an ’80s or a ’90s car. People get nostalgic, and you’re ten times cooler because it isn’t brand-new. These were the last generation of cars designed using primarily pencil and clay, handcrafted out of rectangles and wedges. These are automotive works of art. A new generation of auto freaks have revived these vintage beauties. Modern classic cars are increasingly desirable and prices are skyrocketing.

The Sweet Spot

It’s not easy to use a classic car on a daily basis, but it’s even harder to accept that fact and buy something modern, practical and boring instead. The thought of cruise control, automatic windscreen wipers and an engine 25 |

CAR CULTURE

BORNEO 360 ALIVE

that doesn’t need a choke and a lot of finesse to get it going is indeed, quite taxing. There is a way to make it bearable, though, and it comes in the form of cars from the 80s and 90s: a transition period when the automobile became easier to live with and its design became, well, increasingly more repulsive to look at. The trick is, then, to find those few sweet spots in that transition and you’ll end up with a reliable, interesting and affordable car.

Photo: Motorsport.com

The BMW M3 is a cult car. It has a very prominent following. That’s the one particular car that even younger people are really into. Like if you were to drive up in a ’60s Ferrari, and there was an BMW E30 M3 parked next to you, a lot of guys in their teens and early 20s would be more excited to see the BMW E30 M3, because to them it’s just the most invigorating thing.

Future Modern Classics

Modern Classic Legends

While the value of the Mercedes 190E and BMW E30 are at the top end of the spectrum, identifying a future classic car is also very exciting. Done right your investment can appreciate rather than depreciate unlike modern cars over time. There is a trick to look for those few key signs. Some signs are more obvious than others. For example, attractive styling, desirability and rarity are pretty standard things to look for. Other attributes are a little more difficult to quantify, but a car featuring revolutionary tech or design will also stand a chance of rising in value.

The Mercedes 190E Evolution is a very flamboyant car, because it’s a boxy sedan but with, like, a wing on it and fender flares. There was a time when it was what you would call a boy-racer car. Now there’s a number of more mature collectors that are interested in those cars, shedding that boy-racer thing. Same thing with the E30 M3. Those cars are like peas in a pod. They raced against each other. With only 500 limited numbers for the Evo1 and Evo2 Mercedes 190E Evolutions can fetch as much as USD250,00 in the international market.

One of such cars is the Alfa Romeo 156 GTA. The Alfa 156 GTA marks a legendary part of motoring history. The distinctive style with its high curved flanks made it the best-looking car in its class. The legendary Busso 3.2 V6 24v engine offers magnificent sound, performance and driving experience. It is much rarer than the Mercedes 190E Evo and the BMW E30 M3 with only 348 right hand drives ever built. Alfa Romeo 156 won the European Car of the Year award in 1998, described as having "very refined suspension layout so to offer an impeccable road holding". This Italian beauty is a rare and still relatively affordable.

The demographic of car collectors is changing. The buyers now are younger people in their mid-30s, early 40s, and the first cars they buy are the cars in their memories. They dreamed about these cars from the posters in their bedrooms. They’re less interested in the earlier classic cars from the ’50s and ’60s, because they want cars that can move. They want cars that are fast. They want cars that are much more agile. The most interesting car for this era are the homologation cars. Only when you are deep in car culture, you will only know what that is. Basically, in the ’80s and ’90s, they had special rules whereby manufacturers, if they wanted race cars, would have to build a very limited number of production cars for regular people to buy. The most desirable legends from that era are the Mercedes 190E Evolution and BMW E30 M3.
