Chairman’s Address Fearainn céad míle fáilte roimh gach duine go dtí Féile Buireas Úi Luioch 2015. On behalf of the festival committee I would like to welcome everyone to the Borrisoleigh Festival 2015. Many have travelled long distances and from overseas to take part in the festivities. We hope to provide fun and entertainment for all the family in a safe and friendly environment. We have brought the festival forward in the year to July due to the inclement weather experienced last year in October. A huge thank you to all the people of Borrisoleigh who come together to make this such a wonderful occasion and provide an opportunity to highlight all that is good in the Parish to all who visit. A special word of thanks to all the sponsors for their generous contributions. Their support makes it possible to ensure that the festival continues to be a huge success and grows better each year. Please support them whenever you can. We are delighted to welcome IrishTV to Borrisoleigh to film some events and conduct interviews and showcase Borrisoleigh to a huge audience both here and abroad. On behalf of the festival committee I would like to wish Marie Ryan, The Dubai Rose, from Borrisoleigh the very best of luck in the Rose of Tralee competition. We would also like to wish Sgt Tom McCormack all the best in his retirement and thank An Garda Siochana for all their support and assistance throughout the weekend. Thanks also to Patrice Cooney for a job well done in her inaugural year as Lord Mayoress. Congratulations also to Fr. Vincent Stapleton on his recent ordination. The Dubai Rose Marie Ryan from Borrisoleigh tells us her story Little did I know when I decided to make the move to Dubai what was ahead of me. It has been an exciting year full of firsts and it has exceeded my expectations in every way. It all began in September when a colleague of mine in Raffles International School, Dubai suggested that I attend the Dubai Rose meeting for 2015. This girl was the 2013 Dubai Rose and couldn't speak highly enough of her 'Rose' experience. Given that my dad had christened me his 'Dubai Rose' at a dinner in Inch House before I left, I decided to give it a go. Things took off from there and very soon I was right in the thick of it. Since then, it has just been incredible.
Portlaoise was such an amazing experienceone that I will never forget. There were 56 roses from all over the world there to represent their Rose centres. Of this 56, 23 were put through to go to Tralee in August. I was the last name called out which was a long wait for my friends and family. Thankfully all the hard work paid off.
First I took part in the Dubai Rose selection where they mirrored the Tralee format. I participated in individual interviews, group interviews and a stage interview which was all very daunting to say the least. Luckily I was chosen to represent the Irish community of Dubai in the Rose selection in Portlaoise. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who travelled to Portlaoise, as well as all the people who sent cards and well wishes my way. I appreciate them all so much and I am overwhelmed by the support I have received. It is such a great honour to be representing the Irish community in Dubai but also to represent Borrisoleigh on an international stage. It is an experience I am really looking forward to and I hope I can do you all proud.

Historical Society As part of the Borrisoleigh “Gathering Festival” 2013, our Society undertook “ Walk down Memory Lane”. Due to the success of same, we weren't in a position to complete the Walk. The Gathering Festival of 2015 will include the completion of the historical walk commencing at Shanahan’s Centra Shop, Ileigh Road. at 3 o’clock on Saturday 25th July.
The Society has introduced many great lectures since its foundation to Borrisoleigh and its environs. Probably the most historical lecture was the “life and times of Sean Hogan who was rescued at Knocklong”. We were privileged to have his son and name sake Sean Hogan at that lecture and many of his relatives. We will recommence our lectures in the Autumn and look forward to many and varied lectures.

The Bush and Briar Ramblers The Bush and Briar Ramblers welcome you all to the Borrisoleigh Festival 2015 and whatever your choice of entertainment over the weekend, we hope you enjoy the fun on offer. We were established as a direct result of the Gathering Festival in Borrisoleigh in October 2013 and have slowly become part of the active community organising moderate and easy walks locally. Last year we organised 2 walks for the Festival Weekend, one on the Devils Bit and the other was around the newly opened Inch Loop Walk (Cosán Felim) The Devils Bit is held dear to our hearts, not only for its wonderful walking terrain and views but also, as the place we evolved from and has been adopted as our spiritual mountain and its image can be seen on our group badge. This year we are again putting on 2 walks and moving a little west to the general area of Latteragh Forest with both routes enjoying the tranquillity and views on our own doorstep. 1…. The long walk is 12km walk over a variety of terrain, on and off track (through bush and briar), to the summit of Knockanora (Lanigan’s Tower) and it is really worth the effort.
2…. The shorter walk is 7km and is on a forest road with hidden gems to make it equally as enjoyable as the long walk but without the more serious climb. We hope you can make it out to join us on one of our walks over the festival weekend and maybe even see you on the hills later in the year to enjoy the natural world around us. Borrisoleigh Line Dancers Line Dancing has been popular since 1970 but it wasnt until 1992 when Billy Ray Cyrus released a song called Acky Breaky Heart the Country Line Dancing scene took off and a new generation of dancing was born. The definition of Line Dancing is a synchronised choreographed steps by a group of people who dance in a line and which may move to repeat the same pattern, facing up to four different “walls� (directions). To this day Line Dancing is as big as it was all those years ago but like everything it has changed with the time and moved into the 21st century. We dont dance to just Country and Western music we dance to every type of music. We also do a variety of steps and dances that include Waltzes, Tangos, Latin American even Irish to name a few. I started Line Dancing 16 years ago and I have been an Advanced level dancer (there are five levels) for many years now. The August Bank Holiday last year I started my very first Line Dancing class here
in Borrisoleigh and it became so popular I started a second class on Thursday nights the following October. We have since learned up to twenty dances and will be continuing this September. We dance for an hour and half and its an exciting fun way to exercise, you are more than welcome to join us. If you have never danced before or if you fancy a new hobby then you will find us in the Marian Hall. On Saturday July 25th we will be in the square for our end of year hoedown. We would love to show you a couple of our dances and hopefully you will join us in a dance or two. We start at at Midday and we will be there until 1:30. Borrisoleigh Festival by Father Vincent Stapleton Unfortunately, I was on a hospital placement in Florida and missed out on the first Borrisoleigh Gathering Festival. I had to look on in envy at the photos and videos that were appearing on Facebook. I got a sense that it was a special occasion – a modern example of community spirit. Many good fruits and concrete organisations have come from the Gathering. At present the spirit of community is alive in Borris. This kind of spirit does not fall from the sky but comes from volunteers who are willing to put their energy and talents to work for the common good. I have now been removed from home, on and off, for the best part of a six year period. As an ordained Priest, I will be assigned to another community. I will have to try and make a new home. This gives me a deeper appreciation of the parish where I was raised. While Borrisoleigh is no longer the little village, it retains a big heart. Our people have a sense of solidarity in good times and bad. We are by no means perfect but the vast majority of our people have that essential foundation for a living community – generosity of spirit. We also have a sense of possibility and achievement which can be traced back to success on the sports field but probably runs even deeper.

I am grateful for all the people of Borrisoleigh who have helped me not just in the last six years journeying towards Priesthood but from my childhood. I am grateful for the values I learned here. It reminds me of the African saying – “It takes a village to raise a child.” I am counting on your prayers to keep me on the right path.
Events like the Gathering are a much needed antidote to the individualism of life today. Especially for our young people – who haven’t seen as many county or All-Ireland final wins as we would like – it shows them I think back to St. Cualan arriving into the the community spirit and the importance of quiet glen where he formed a community to celebration in life. I don’t remember the praise God. I think of past generations who Fairs of Borris but I am just old enough to lived through poverty, famine and emigraremember fondly, the neighbours coming tion and those who fought for a better future together to save the ‘cocks’ of hay. I hope for this nation.
