ITH FIRE 7

Challenge of complexity course AHO 2009

Play With Fire Play With Fire is a system to develop methods to prepare people for fire response, focusing on the home as a context. This product service system, gives people a fun and educational experience of the most important subjects that people should know about fire. It is also meant to get people to feel safer by knowing more about preventing a fire. This project has been developed through Systems Oriented Design. The project had a starting point to design new fire escape equipment, but through doing Rich Design Space, GIGA-mapping and talking to users and experts, I found out that the main problem was that people have too little knowledge about fire response.

Edutainment center Play With Fire has 8 main activities that will provide the information and experience people need. Play With Fire is a mobile edutainment center that has 6 trailers that are driving around in each specific area of Norway from the 1st of October to the 30th of November when people are extra aware about fires. There is one employee from dsb (Direktoratet Samfunnssikkerhet og beredskap) under Aksjon Boligbrann that drives the trailer.

Final product Triton Hybrid is a life jacket that gives optimal mobility and safety for active sailors. It has both an inflatable vest with 150 Newton buoyancy and extra soft buoyancy foam that corresponds to 50 Newton. The life jacket is hybrid, it is cool as a garment, and combines the advantages of both the inflatable elements and buoyancy foam. The buoyancy foam is an extra safety, you stay afloat even with a failure on the gas cartridge.

Details Helly Tech material provides a water-and windproof plus breathable surface and the zipper is asymmetrical positioned to avoid contact with the chin. The life jacket has big pockets where you can warm your hands in, and a knife tamp on each side for easy access attachment of pocket knife. Should you fall into the water, the luminescent yellow collar and the strategically placed reflective material will make you clearly visible. By pulling down the zipper on the sides the life jacket will become more spacious and provides room for several layers of clothing.

Inside Triton Hybrid has a number of benefits in comparison to lifejackets on the market today. The placement of the buoyancy material on the lifejacket gives better movement in the upper body and arms, and the mesh panels gives better ventilation. Buoyancy foam provides good support and also protect the chest if shock / impact occurs.

Inflated Inflatable vests need an annual check from retailers. This is often not done. To make it easy for the customer, he is registered when he purchase the life jacket and is then reminded every year before the season starts for an annual check of the inflatable vest. By having professionals to perform the test of the life jacket means that the customer can feel confident that it is in good condition.

Product design 2 Compete ACCD in Pasedena 2007

Compete To provide performance product for a non-mainstream sport, sail racing. I had guidance from Frank Kirkeland, Olympic Sailor 2004 and former Norwegian national coach throughout the whole process. Features 1 EVA rubber so the shoe is waterproof up to the neoprene boot. The EVA goes also back of the velcro so if the water get so high up it still wont get in the shoe. 2 Velcro to attach the boot, meaning that the shoe is waterproof all the way up to the leg. 3 Sailing rope as lases. Sailing rope is much stronger than normal laces, and will not tear. It’s a problem that the lases tares off. 4 High breathable mesh so the shoe has a good airflow. 5 Soft rubber so the shoe get a good grip to the deck.

“I think to combine the best of two worlds: sailor shoes and neoprene boots, you are close to having the optimal sailor shoe! I think this shoe is incredible! Strange that no one has come up with this before...! - Frank Kirkeland, former National coach and Olympic Sailor 2004
