The Borton Overseas Difference We’re a proud Minneapolis-based tour operator with a history that spans over a century. As a Borton Overseas client, you’ll benefit from our wealth of knowledge and expertise in our destinations. We’re proud of our history, and we look forward to connecting you with your own journey to an extraordinary land.

Travel is an adventure.

It’s a journey to unfamiliar destinations, with unfamiliar languages, meeting new people along the way, a quest for knowledge and appreciation of other cultures. Traveling is a journey unique to each person, where one learns about one’s self – whether it is an opportunity to participate in an activity that pushes our personal boundaries, trying a new cuisine or meeting distant relatives for the first time. You want a company you can trust, with a staff which has the experience and knowledge needed to assist you through all phases of your journey.

Benefit from our experience. Borton Overseas began in 1894 as Sunden, Vanstrum, and Co., specializing in steamship travel for immigrants coming to the US from Scandinavia. In 1986, Vanstrum Travel became a division of Borton Overseas, and continued to expand with land tour and cruise programs throughout Scandinavia and Africa. Today, Borton Overseas is a thriving tour operator, and our programs have expanded to include Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines world-wide cruises and programs to Patagonia and Antarctica. Borton Overseas owns Trollstigen Resort in Åndalsnes, Norway, a cabin resort situated in the stunning Romsdal region near the west coast, and is incorporated in Norway as Borton Overseas Norway AS.

Where we travel in Africa:

Borton Overseas offers programs in the regions of East Africa, Southern Africa, South Africa, and the neighboring Islands and beaches of the Indian Ocean. We offer enough variety, diversity, and experiences to last a lifetime. In this brochure, we begin each Africa region showing you regional seasons and list just a few highlights and suggested itineraries.

East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Ethiopia) – in one word: culture! It is front and center and very obviously and beautifully on display … and in full color. Mix this with vast plains dotted with large herds and an annual migration that brings to life THE circle of life. The edges of East Africa tend to be refreshingly authentic and on the rough side, compared to the smoother polish of the south. We wouldn’t want it any other way. Southern Africa (Botswana, Congo, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) – in one word: wilderness! Vast amounts of pristine habitats, from forests to marshes to deltas to deserts. We can promise you’ll never see stars like this! The guides are exceptional and their knowledge will inspire you to get out of the vehicle. Southern Africa offers active travelers options to get their feet dirty.

4?D?PG Bob Swan/Borton Overseas

In a nutshell, what can we say that sets these regions apart?

,GJGK?LH?P

M

South Africa (including Swaziland and Lesotho) – in one word: diversity! This world in one country offers a completely authentic African experience like no other. Consider the afro-chic and trendy Cape Town and Winelands to the scenic splendors of coastlines and mountains to the world-class safari areas of Sabi Sands and Kruger. And luxury trains run through it!

Mike Meyers

Indian Ocean Islands & Beaches (Seychelles, Zanzibar, Madagascar and the beaches hugging the continent from Kenya down to Mozambique) – in one word: paradise! Our beginnings are traditionally safari focused. But the temptation to wash the dust off in the warm, azure waters of the Indian Ocean lapping at this region’s front door was irresistible. So we offer these to you. Combine them with our continental offerings or consider them as stand-alone destinations.

All of our trips can be customized for individuals, families and groups.

Which Route? Borton offers several climb options, from basic climbs to polished treks; daily independent treks or small group set departures. All climbs are orchestrated by highly respected suppliers and led by experienced Tanzanian guides and porters. All climbs include transfers from base hotel to the park gate, mountain accommodation in huts or camping, all meals, park fees, mountain rescue fees and highly trained guides and porters to carry supplies and gear. Marangu – the most direct and most popular route up the mountain. Sleep in shared mountain huts. An extra night on the mountain is wise and aids acclimatization. This is a two-way route: ascent and descent is on the same path. Machame – a very scenic route with a gradual ascent. Sleep in two person tents. Descend via Mweka Route. This route is a bit tougher; you’ll walk farther and the terrain is more challenging with more climbing than hiking. In addition to our daily departures we offer set small group dates which summit during the full moon. Lemosho – another scenic private and gradual ascent. Sleep in two-person tents. The traverse across the Shira plateau can be especially spectacular, and this route ensures the best of the Machame route is also seen. When to climb? Kili can be climbed year round. Even though it is close to the equator, different seasons bring different conditions. Remember that heavy rain, snow, and storms can happen anytime, but here are historical seasons: Jan-Mar: Good – The weather is at its clearest and warmest. Apr-Jun: Wet – Best possibility for slippery trails and poor visibility. Jul-Oct: Good – Cold, but clear afternoons and low clouds. Nov-Dec: Wet – Afternoon thunderstorms, but clear nights.

• Seychelles: An isolated archipelago of natural beauty and jaw dropping beaches these 115 gorgeous granite and coral islands lie in the warm equatorial waters just a 3 1/2 hour flight from Kenya. The Seychellois are a colorful blend of different races, cultures and religions, but racial harmony exists in this trilingual Creole nation. Mahé is the hub and home to the majority of the population and over 75 beaches. A 15 minute flight to the second largest island, Praslin; revel in nature’s splendor including a primeval rainforest, and some of the rarest birds on the earth. La Digue boasts some of the most photographed beaches in the world and Alphonse is renowned for bone fishing. How to Get Here: Fly into Mahé on direct flights from Europe, Nairobi and Johannesburg. • Zanzibar: A handful of little coral islands nestled just 25 miles off the shores of Tanzania. Steeped in history, Stone Town is a maze of narrow streets lined with white-washed buildings housing shops and bazaars. Explore the countryside to learn about the famous spices grown here. Be sure to allow time to just escape on the palm-studded beaches, gazing at some of the most beautiful waters you will ever see. How to Get Here: Ferry from Dar or fly from Dar, Selous, Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Nairobi, or Johannesburg. • Mozambique: Quirimbas, Pemba, Bazaruto, Vilanculos… home to beach resorts dotted along seemingly endless swaths of white sand, amid translucent waters flecked with dhow sails and rich in marine life – an unspoiled paradise for those seeking a haven of peace. On these beaches you can’t escape the age-old rhythms of Africa, the heady sense of history. Portuguese trading dhows bearing slaves and ivory to the East and whispered legends of the Queen of Sheba’s Ophir pearls. How to Get Here: Direct flights from Johannesburg, Kruger Park or reach the north from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. • Madagascar: The fourth largest island in the world offers rainforests to deserts to mountains. Almost 80 percent of the animal species are found nowhere else in the world, including 50 species of lemurs, seven of the world’s eight species of baobab trees, and over 1000 species of orchids. While it lies not far off South Africa’s coast the local language, Malagasy, shares most of its vocabulary with a tribe on the island of Borneo in Indonesia. Add immigrants from Africa, Europe and Asia and you have a fascinating mix of cultures.

Norway

Towering mountains, deep fjords, and thundering waterfalls … the “land of the midnight sun.” Depending on the season, Norway can also be the “land of the Northern Lights!” For many Americans, a trip to Norway is a pilgrimage. For anyone, Norway is a destination not to be missed! Travel through a fjord and marvel at the tall, sheer faces of the surrounding cliffs and farms seemingly “hanging” on the mountainside. Hike over the vast Hardanger Plateau or along a roaring river. Visit northern Norway and find a fisherman’s delight in the Lofoten Islands or visit a Sami village for a taste of its culture and history. Enjoy the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Oslo, the quaint charm of Bergen, known as the “gateway to the fjords,” and everything in-between!

Iceland

In this “steamy” country of geysers, Viking history, and rich culture, a variety of experiences await you. The landscape is a vast lava desert encompassing active volcanoes and glaciers, with its own unique beauty that the Icelanders are very proud of. That landscape is their playground! Try bird watching, whale watching, hiking and biking, experience the geysers and waterfalls, snowmobiling, horseback riding, white water rafting, or just relax and soak your worries away in the geothermal Blue Lagoon. Explore Iceland’s rich history dating back to the Viking Age, its culture, including art, handicrafts and cuisine, as well as its capital, Reykjavik, with excellent shopping, dining, and nightlife.

“ Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” – Miriam Beard

Greenland Greenland is its own definition of exotic – the modern Inuit culture has preserved much of its tradition, which relies on fishing and hunting, the loyalty and strength of the Greenlandic sled dog, and strong family ties. The massive inland icecap, while a topic in the world news and global warming, still dominates the land. Gigantic icebergs float like bath toys, the horizon changing as they drift. Historical ruins dot the landscape, leaving us to wonder what life was like a thousand years ago. And the stunning wildflowers, complement the Arctic landscape with bright yellow, deep purple, and vivid white. The beauty of it all is breathtaking, pristine, untouched. Few make their way to Greenland; you could be one of them.

Denmark Denmark is a small country, but has plenty to offer including seemingly endless coastlines and white, sandy beaches, a rich maritime culture, fertile farmland, and bike trails throughout the colorful countryside. Denmark has a long history dating back over 1000 years to the Viking Age, and has one of the world’s oldest monarchies. Art, culture, and design play a huge role in society which is evident in the many museums, ballets, and orchestras and the numerous festivals and cultural events taking place all year long. The capital city of Copenhagen is contemporary with an old-world charm, and offers history, the arts, shopping, and world-class dining to visitors and residents alike. Do as the Danes and take a bike trip through the city! And don’t miss Tivoli Gardens, a beautiful amusement park for children of all ages!

Discover the pristine beauty and intrigue that draws people to this captivating and extraordinary destination!

Antarctic Peninsula Cruise

Antarctic cruises depart from Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, which is the southernmost city in the world. These activities are included in the Basecamp package price. Passengers who do not wish to participate will enjoy regular Zodiac excursions and follow the normal shore program and land excursions (easy to moderate walks and hikes with focus on wildlife).

The four ships in the Fred. Olsen fleet – Balmoral, Braemar, Boudicca, and Black Watch - are large enough to be spacious and comfortable, yet small enough to visit unique destinations that larger ships can’t reach. Combined with experienced, friendly crews, they create an intimate, welcoming atmosphere, and an altogether distinctively British experience. The following pages present the Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines fleet in greater detail.

The Perfect Alternative This Norwegian family-owned company is proud of their more than 150 years of Norwegian heritage in seamanship. Since 1848, the Fred. Olsen ships have sailed around the Baltic Sea and through the Norwegian Fjords. The captains and senior officers are all Norwegians, and know these waters like the backs of their hands! Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ fleet is the perfect alternative to the larger, crowded cruise ships. They are large enough to be spacious and comfortable, yet intimate enough to remain friendly and relaxed. And with smaller ships, many unique, “off the beaten track” ports are accessible, not possible for larger vessels.

The Fred.Olsen Difference With cruise holidays becoming more popular every year and larger ships being launched regularly, Fred. Olsen likes to do things a little differently. A Fred. Olsen cruise aims to be personal, memorable and flexible. Their intimately-sized ships create a warm, friendly atmosphere. Guests and crew quickly get to know each other, and they are on hand to make sure you’re a name, not a cabin number. Wherever you choose to travel, you will enjoy a level of service and warm camaraderie that’s unique to Fred. Olsen – and that’s called the Fred. Olsen difference.
