WHAT IS HISTORY? BY ÞÓRUNN ÖSP JÓNASDÓTTIR History is an old subject founded by the Greek thinker Herodotus about 2400 years ago. History tells us about the changes and the development that have taken place. The study of history makes people able to understand how the past have affected this day today, and how their actions will shape every day coming. History demands critical thinking as the questions; what?, when?, why?, have to be answered when studying history. When a history degree have been gained, many options are available. Some schools offer further studies at Masters level, and even Doctors level. There, students specialise in an area of history and cultures according to their interest. Heritage manager, historic buildings inspector, museum or gallery curator and secondary school teacher are examples of jobs which are directly related to a history degree. Jobs where a history degree would be useful are of all kinds e.g. academic librarian, archaeologist, broadcast journalist, politician and a solicitor. I like history because it gives me an insight into the life of my ancestors. It tells me why I am right here where I am and what brought me here. I love getting to know the culture and customs of the distinct communities of the past. History is interesting because we won’t ever get to experience the past itself, but we can imagine how it was and get more clear picture of it by researching, reading and exploring.

THE 335 YEAR WAR
WHY DID THE WAR LAST SO LONG? THE 335 YEAR WAR IS THE LONGEST WAR IN THE HISTORY. IT IS NOT ONLY THE LONGEST WAR THAT EVER HAVE BEEN FOUGHT BUT ALSO IT IS ONE OF THE LESS DEADLIEST CONFLICT, BUT IN THESE 335 YEARS, NO ONE DIED. The Isles of Scilly and The Netherlands had this long war which started during the English Civil War in 1651 where The Parliamenterians and The Royalists fought for power. One day The Dutch decided to join the war on the side of the Parliamenterians. The Royalists considered this decision as a betrayal and set about raiding The Dutch shipping lanes. But things were not going well for The Royalists and they had been pushed back to the Isles of Scilly. The Dutch saw an opportunity, sent a fleet of twelve warships to the isles and declared a war on The Isles of Scilly. No battle was and three months later The Parliamenterians expansed The Royalists, The Isles of Scilly reverted to the former ones, and everybody sailed home, but The Dutch forgot to declare peace on The Isles of Scilly.
One day in 1985 the Dutch Embassador gets a paper from a historian who wanted to know if The Dutch still had a war on The Isles of Scilly. The embassy uncovered some documents and found ot that they still were in a war. The Dutch went to the isles and signed a peace treaty and The Isles of Scilly were finally save.
