It’s an honor to join Boss Design, a global leader in resolving workplace challenges with an artful tapestry of esteemed design, meticulous craftsmanship and compelling products.

As a brand, Boss has promoted the evolution of modern design in Europe and since we established our US manufacturing presence in 2015, we unveiled this inspiring vision to the North American market.

What excites me is the potential the Boss portfolio has as organizations across the US and Canada transform their workspace settings to places that are approachable yet agile – environments that look and feel comfortable, appealing and welcoming. The emphasis is on creating places that are better to be in – in short, destination spaces.

The lines between workspace and hospitality spaces are blurring, with the architecture and design community defining this transition. The aesthetic of our portfolio is harmonious with the softening of the office, and our collections can help designers fulfil these aspirations.

In recent years, we have contributed to exquisitely designed settings for major airlines, financial institutions, automotive dealerships, retailers, restaurants and hotels and other organizations. Our sales and marketing efforts will emphasize collaboration with the A&D and dealer communities, delivering an exceptional experience to a broader and more diverse array of clients.

Since the company was founded 41 years ago, Boss has been a leader in sustainability across Europe and this message will also resonate with the North American market. Our manufacturing facility in High Point, North Carolina – and our ongoing efforts to localize our products and supply chains – personify our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint while providing clients with an enviable customer experience.

Looking forward, our modern European design language artfully honed by skilled American employees…crafting products that embody our devotion to sustainable design and manufacturing…fused with our proficiency creating transformative spaces for some of the world’s most admired brands…offer our North American clients an enriching experience through Boss Design and our partners.

We look forward to working with you.

INTRODUCING

Color Nature

Boss Design’s new color palette is rooted in the natural world, and perfect for crafting destination spaces.

Hanna Stauch, Interior Designer Boss Design.

6

One of the most effective ways of creating spaces that feel human and habitable is to apply color palettes that derive from nature. Earth and sky, woods and fields, lakes and rivers, mountains and the ocean – studies show that the color wheel of the natural environment makes people feel calm, reducing stress and enhancing wellbeing. More than ever, interior designers, architects and scheme specifiers around the world are following biophilic principles in color selection to craft destination spaces.

We know this because at Boss Design we’ve been collecting and analyzing data which gives us insight into what color, finish and fabric selections our customers make when ordering. Using live data to assess where color tastes are going, combining that with our own trend research and taking into account the design thinking behind our product lines, we have reshaped the standard Boss Design color palette for roll-out in the second quarter of 2024.

This may sound very grand, but the eight natural and biophilic colors in the new palette represent evolution rather than revolution. Our data shows that while people express interest in bright colors, they aren’t often specified. Rather than defining one or two highlight colors, this palette provides a tranquil set of tones to build upon – whether and which accent colors are used is up to the designer.

Positive spaces

Reed Green and Copper Brown were introduced in 2022, as part of a special color palette created for Sia, one of the most sustainable task chairs on the market. They have enjoyed very positive traction with our clients, and to measure the popularity of these colors on other ranges, I have introduced them in small doses within our global showrooms – on the legs of a Sol table and on our recently launched laptop table, Lina, for example.

“In observing palettes and mood boards presented to us by clients, it was evident these two colors were more complementary to not only where trends stand now but they have versatile and lasting qualities that will serve us in the future as we grow parallel with the demands of our evolving clientele.” –Hanna Stauch, Interior Designer, Boss.

The popularity and future potential of Reed Green and Copper Brown has seen them added to the standard palette alongside Sand, which is a more neutral tone while still offering warmth and tactility.

Sky Blue, Deep Ocean Blue, Slate Grey, Black and White complete the set, rounding out a color palette of eight tones that all work comfortably with one another and reflect the natural world. There is a touch warmth and vibrance, plenty of tranquility, while at the same time avoiding the earthier dark browns, greys and greens sometimes associated with biophilic design.

Color and sustainability

Like the color palette we developed when we launched the Sia task chair, having a nature-inspired selection of tones aligns with Boss Design’s drive towards sustainability in the commercial furniture industry. However, it is more than a statement of intent.

Firstly, it has an aesthetic purpose. Smooth, natural, organic lines are part of the visual language of our furniture collections, from our popular wingback chair, Amelia, to the Frida focus pod, and from the Bodie lounge collection to Agent tables and chairs.

Secondly, and in combination with the above, it is a palette carefully honed for the creation of destination spaces. Across workplace and hospitality environments, it can be used for the application of biophilic design principles. Used in conjunction with plants, natural light and organic textures, with good air circulation and fresh food and drink available, biophilic design leads to an atmosphere that is reassuring, calm and serene.

The human-nature connection puts the brain at ease, lowers the blood pressure, allows for recuperation, improves concentration and fosters creativity. The colors in our 2024 palette make that connection, helping the organizations we work with become more sustainable in the long run, contributing to productivity and profitability.

Remi

Our new tub chair is like a tulip opening in spring. Lead designer Aaron Clarkson explains how nature inspired Remi’s look and feel, as well as how it’s made

Remi

Refined and Responsible

As with so many projects, Remi began with a business need. On paper, at least, our aim was to add a comfortable tub chair to the Boss Design portfolio –perhaps as an extension to the Paloma collection. As designers, however, we’re always driven to improve on what has gone before and here we set out to create a piece of furniture to exemplify natural beauty, comfort and sustainability.

A natural, holistic philosophy informed our design process from the beginning. It’s said that there are no straight lines in nature and Remi reflects this with its curvaceous, organic form and smoothly rounded surfaces. Like its cousins in our catalogue such as Amelia, Paloma and Manta, Remi’s sweeping curves offer an escape from the hard edges and corners of the built environment. We wanted it to look soft, comfortable and welcoming across hospitality, workplace and residential spaces.

Focused on sustainability

The same respect for nature went into our selection of materials, leading to a ground-breaking level of sustainability. Remi’s sculpted form is rendered in injection moulded polyurethane foam. The PU foam typically used in furniture manufacturing is fossil fuel-hungry, which isn’t good for the environment. At Boss Design we’ve been exploring alternatives for a long time and Remi

will be made with Bio-Pur® foam, which has a carbon impact 75% lower than conventional PU foam.

Instead of fossil fuels, the Bio-Pur manufacturing process relies on organic matter – mainly agricultural waste – a renewable resource which produces biomethane and bio-naphtha. Replacing crude oil and natural gas lowers the carbon footprint of the foam and Bio-Pur can be injection moulded using the same tooling. With no compromise in terms of quality, durability or comfort, it’s like for like but emits less carbon.

All Remi’s other materials are renewable, recycled and/or recyclable. The box frame in the seat is FSCcertified plywood, which can be recycled. Likewise, its steel frame and base. Remi’s fabric coverings can be specified in recycled fibre, and even its screw-in feet are made from recycled waste plastic. Nearly every component used has been sourced from a British supplier, shortening supply chains and further limiting its carbon footprint.

Refining and perfecting Remi will be a game changer for customers who want to lower their emissions, and we hope it will be the catalyst that leads to more BioPur products – at Boss Design and throughout the industry. Our desire

for it to succeed doubled our drive to create the most appealing chair in the category.

Every line, surface and stitch has been carefully considered. We began with two prototypes – one a version of Paloma with a seat section that continues down to the ground, and a second which was a fresh design I drew which shares some of its DNA with Paloma but had a unique visual within itself.

Preferring the second option, we progressed it through several further prototype phases. Its back and arms were inspired by flowers opening and curved seashells, while inside that form the seat rises like proving dough, soft and rounded, filling the space. Following an open and welcoming visual impression, we wanted to surprise the sitter with an unexpected level of comfort.

Working together, development upholsterer Steve Bloomer and I painstakingly adjusted the lines, curves, surfaces and foam softness, testing each iteration with a variety of sitters and appraising its form from every angle. Then we made further adjustments, aiming to create a chair that looks enticing from anywhere in the room, delivers next-level comfort, and can be manufactured at scale.

10
DESIGNER STORY

Meticulous tailoring

Steve dedicated himself to refining Remi’s fabric patterns, cuts and stitching. To create the natural look and appealing silhouette we wanted, its covering had to fit like a supple skin, becoming one with the form. Along the arm and back, a top-stitch is used for a very subtle seam, while twin-needle is used for the rear, internal and seat panels.

The seat has a soft dome of moulded foam on webbed suspension for a residential level of comfort. A pocket of cut foam has been included in the lumbar area to cushion the sitter’s back –the area most sensitive to the firmness of injection moulded foam.

Though it has a relatively small footprint, with its generous seat and steel base Remi is a weighty piece.

For an added sense of freedom and flexibility, there is the option for a 360° swivel, or a 180° swivel with autoreturn. The sitter can smoothly adjust their position to converse or enjoy a particular view but when they alight it will right itself without burdening housekeeping.

Following our holistic, natural philosophy, we have created a piece that transcends changing trends and fashions. We like to imagine that Remi has been smoothed and rounded by wind or water – a unique, timeless form to put people at ease, welcoming them to sit, relax and converse. Its longevity is ensured at a practical level too. Remi has been designed for easy reupholstering, so you can refresh its color and fabric when the time comes to update your décor scheme.

11

Frida

Our brief with the Frida was to design a focus pod that departs from the corporate look-and-feel of existing products and provides a level of comfort inspired by residential furniture.

We aimed for a totally different aesthetic that will appeal to architects and designers who want to specify pods in hospitality spaces, such as airport lounges and hotel lobbies. Influenced by the work from home cultures, specifiers are trying to make offices comfortable and homely, so we wanted to deliver a focus pod that gives the feel of working from home but with the workplace benefits of social contact and collaboration.

Floating on air

From our earliest sketches, we developed a design that would convey a sense of comfort and tranquillity. We prototyped a sling-like structure with a curved seat base suspended from each side of the straight-sided pod which is reminiscent of a hammock. The seat appears to float on air – a soft and comfortable notion in itself.

Our prototypes were tested by people with a variety of sizes and body-

on the proportions to arrive at the optimum sitting experience.

Privacy and security

Whether it’s in an open plan workspace or an airport lounge, a focus pod needs to provide visual and acoustic privacy, without becoming claustrophobic. During prototyping, we lowered the sides at the fore of the booth so that it doesn’t feel too cut off from the wider environment. Padded in foam and fabric, the 40mm thick sides help provide acoustic privacy without appearing heavy or overbearing.

Beneath the seat is an ideal space for the sitter to stow their laptop bag, briefcase or luggage, behind their feet. Situated in a busy travel hub or shared workspace, Frida will give its occupant an added sense of security as passers-by won’t be able to grab their bag. It adds to the feeling that you can make the space your own.

Simple and sustainable

Whenever we embark on a new project, we do so with a focus on sustainability. Often, the answer is to simplify the product, reducing the resources used, the range of components required and

the complexity of the manufacturing process. Frida achieves all three. As such, our supply chains and manufacturing process are kept simple for a lower carbon footprint, and Frida is easy to disassemble either for re-upholstery – to lengthen its working life – or for separation to reuse or recycle its materials.

Defining an open space

More than just a focus pod, we envisage that Frida will bring comfort, personality and a human touch, making open spaces friendly and approachable in large commercial premises, atriums, hotel lobbies and travel hubs. Specified in subtle, organic colors and with textured fabrics it will bring a level of softness never seen before in the focus pod category.

Its straight, vertical sides mean it can be grouped in sets of four, dotted throughout a wide area. Equally, it can be configured in a bank, creating a separating feature in the layout. Facing opposite ways to create an Sshape adds privacy, as well as the possibility to create a wind path of tranquil nooks through an open plan area.

Mews

A look at how British architectural history influenced the design approach behind the Mews pod collection, with our Head of Pods, Ben Mitchell

Although Mews pods by Boss Design have a contemporary feel and function, part of the design thinking behind them goes back centuries, deep into British architectural tradition.

The word ‘mews’ first appeared written down in 1537 when Henry VIII’s Bloomsbury Royal Mews burned down. Mews buildings were stables in those days and in the 17th and 18th centuries were built behind great houses and famous terraces all over Britain to accommodate horses, coaches, carriages and the people who tended them.

How mews were used evolved over time and they became quarters for those serving in the big houses, with kitchens, laundries and workshops. During the 19th century many mews were converted to

become private homes and businesses. Dressmaking, weaving, joinery and many other trades grew ad hoc in the mews sitting between the architectural landmarks of each city.

In many ways, mews as an architectural form represents adaptability, cohesion and productivity, in a compact format which enabled British cities to grow and develop according to changing requirements in the economy. Mews pods were designed to bring these qualities into workspaces simply and effectively, comfortably furnished and finished to entice people back to the workplace.

Clear Art Deco roots

In its glazing, Mews makes another nod to Britain’s architectural heritage. The black, geometric forms hark back to the steel

framed windows popular from World War I until the 1950s. The development of slim joints strong enough to hold larger but thinner panes of glass enabled architects to flood their interiors with natural light and Art Deco was born, bringing a new aesthetic to cities in the UK and around the world.

The grid that forms the Mews pod’s front elevation comes from this tradition and is part of the concept behind the product. When it was first introduced, the Mews collection consisted of three pods, each with the same footprint but with different functionality. With pods for video conferencing, private and open informal meetings, the proposition has a clear purpose and is easy to specify.

16

While internally offering this functionality, externally Mews is used as an architectural intervention to define workplace interiors without resorting to the expense of hard construction. Recognizing our customers’ desire to maximize square footage, we further developed the collection to include modules with a smaller footprint. Dial and Brief provide further building blocks for the specifiers to shape schemes, at roughly one-third and two-thirds the original width respectively.

Character building Britain’s architectural heritage wasn’t the only source of inspiration for Mews. Boss Design has an established track record designing pods, seating and tables for commercial and hospitality settings to draw upon.

The character of Mews as a finished piece is very much defined by our intention to create destination spaces. From top to bottom, Mews features include air circulation, acoustic upholstered ceiling, low glare lighting, clear or privacy glazing, fabric wall panels, curtaining, floor tiles and a levelling plinth, with worktable and upholstered seating options dependent on the unit specified.

Using color, fabric, texture and lighting combinations, the specifier can put the finishing touches to a space that looks and feels comfortable, which people will want to inhabit. The user and their comfort has been considered at every level. For example, the Focus and Brief settings are designed for video conferencing with lighting optimized

for this function. Light reflected by the fabric wall the user faces during a call enhances their appearance to the colleagues and clients they connect with.

These little considerations put the user in a good frame of mind, while at the same time the Mews pod shapes the ambiance of the space around it. As an architectural form, mews quickly became more than just a stable; likewise, in commercial furniture, Mews is more than just a pod. It’s a straightforward way of creating destination spaces.

Katō Lounge

Designers Phil Bennett and Alex Ranson on the ideas and inspiration for the new Katō Lounge

The design thinking behind Katō was always to showcase the woodworking and engineering expertise that defines Boss. Beautiful show-wood furniture has long been our strong suit but this time we wanted to produce a statement piece, so we began sketching ideas for a timber armchair with an exo-frame supporting an upholstered seat and back. This would enable us to put as much wood on display as possible.

An organic structure

Our vision for the frame was to create a subtle design aesthetic that whispers of timeless simplicity. Its cylindrical legs and cross member rails look like they’re turned the traditional way, but are actually precision engineered using our five-axis CNC woodworking equipment. We use similarly advanced technology to machine the mortise, tenon and comb joints which create smooth, organic transitions between the vertical and horizontal elements of the structure.

A sensory experience

Wrapping around the sides and back of the chair in a horseshoe shape, the arm rail caps off the design and turns Katō into the statement piece we wanted. This element of the exoskeleton proved to be an exciting challenge as we searched for a form that would invite the sitter in and give the design a unique and memorable quality.

The solution was to increase the proportions of the arm and create a broad, elliptical rail. We widened it to 80mm and gave it slimmer edges, while retaining its roundedness through a soft, domed top surface. The aerofoil-inspired cross-sectional shape of Katō’s arms elegantly suits the organic feel of the structure beneath, while making a clear visual statement. It has an architectural feel to it – like a light, expansive platform supported by the sturdy cylindrical leg posts.

Detail matters

Subtle and minimal, the upholstered seat and back continue the timeless simplicity built up in the woodwork. This allows the timber to stand to the fore and make a visual and tactile impact, while small, considered details in the design of the cushioning speak of comfort.

Timeless simplicity

With comfort, softness and serenity becoming increasingly important in commercial settings, Katō gives architects and designers the opportunity to make a statement with timber furniture within their new décor schemes. While it looks hand sculpted, our investment in technology means we can manufacture it at scale and the design suits a wide range of fabrics and finishes.

Simple shapes, high-quality materials and a crafted finish give Katō its aura of refined comfort – an elegant statement of timeless simplicity and comfort.

INTRODUCING

Kitt

20

It seems to me that there is little point in designing a chair if it doesn’t work. If it isn’t comfortable. If it doesn’t engender the right emotions. If it doesn’t facilitate the right actions and movements. With Kitt we obsessed over the ergonomics of the chair right from the project’s inception and refined the form of the two laminations to produce an extraordinarily comfortable sit. One that allows for precisely the right support when relaxing and the right encouragement when leaning forward, for example in restaurant use.

The form of the chair aims to find a considered combination of the precise and the fluid – a soft engineering, if you like – and we wanted to find a particular aesthetic that integrates a generous and welcoming feel with a minimal but strong frame. The relationship between the proportions of the seat and back elements achieves this as well as making the process of creating an efficient stack easier. Kitt doesn’t shout. It does what it is meant to, quietly.

“The form of the chair aims to find a considered combination of the precise and the fluid — a soft engineering, if you like.”
