EDUCATION Kitchen & Bath DESIGN program Awarded “Excellence in Education” honor As part of accreditation standards, every NKBA-accredited college, university, or technical institute submits two student design projects following the requirements of the current year’s NKBA Student Design Competition, sponsored by Sub Zero / Wolf Company and Waypoint Living Spaces. Student work samples included a floor plan, elevation, construction plan, and mechanical plan. The work is assessed on its compliance with the NKBA Planning Guidelines, NKBA Graphic and Presentation Standards and how well the solution meets the clients’ needs. The Excellence in Education Awards are given to the top schools whose combined entries earned an average score of at least 93 out of a possible 100. The BAC’s entries (both bath projects) scored an average of 98.5. The winning schools were announced at the Educators Forum held during the NKBA’s Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) this past April. Thank you and congratulations to all of the K&B instructors who taught the classes that lead up to Cam Snyder’s fall 2010 Advanced Bath Studio class.

After all, while such an exploration is a search for answers, it is also a quest for the subsequent effects and reactions that vary in each of us as individuals. Because we each react to color, shapes, textures, and other aesthetics differently, my motivation comes from the joy of creating unique solutions that open new doors of possibility for every individual. I enjoy having opportunities to positively impact people’s lives, and to perhaps make their lives richer by finding the aesthetic solution that’s ‘just perfect’ for them.” Gloria has been featured in MARCH magazine, a women’s business publication, and quoted for her color expertise in Design New England.

Gardens of Argentina & Uruguay with Nan Sinton: November 9 –18, 2011 Enjoy exploring Argentinean and Uruguayan landscape design and horticulture with educator and horticulturalist Nan Sinton. Argentina’s magnificent landscapes, glorious plants and private gardens are virtually unknown to North Americans. This tour provides a “snapshot” of the country, from elegant Buenos Aires and subtropical riverside gardens to the cool Patagonian mountain lakes, wildflowers and rare trees, then on to the pampas and finally to seldom visited homes and gardens across the Rio de la Plata in Uruguay. It promises to be a unique and delicious experience.

LANDSCAPE INSTITUTE ALUMNI
Darcy Paige & Jill Sinclair Darcy Paige is the owner of Laurel Garden Design, a 15-year-old design / install / maintainance company. She holds an LI Certificate in Landscape Design, a Masters of Education, and is a Massachusetts certified horticulturist and a NOFA Organic Land Care Professional. Darcy built a design and maintenance business as self-taught gardener with a background in the visual arts. Eventually, she realized, “I lacked a broader context for my designs — I didn’t know much about the history of gardens, and had no input from other professionals on how to improve my work.” Through the LI program, and especially her independent
project, “The Feasibility of the Vertical Garden in New England: Explorations in Design, Use, and Technology,” Darcy found, “I could push myself to explore ideas and design approaches that I would have been too timid to explore under the confines of a client relationship, and I’ve come away from the Institute with many new friends that I can turn to for inspiration and camaraderie.” Jill Sinclair is a British landscape historian currently living in Paris. She holds a Masters in Art with Distinction from the Inchbald School of Design in London. Her independent project for her Landscape Design History certificate, Fresh Pond, explored the shifting significance of a much-loved Massachusetts landscape, and was published by MIT Press in 2009. Jill’s particular research interest is the
changing meaning and value of historic places. In a recent return to the US, Jill participated in a symposium held by the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, presenting a well-received paper on Mount Auburn and Pere LeChaise: “These Beautiful PleasureGrounds of Death: Cross-Cultural Comparisons of Values and Meaning in the Inceptive Responses to the Parisian Garden Cemetery and its American Interpretations.” Jill is looking forward to new research opportunities after she moves to New Delhi this fall.

Online Courses and Certification
The Sustainable Design Instit The Sustainable Design Institute (SDI) at the BAC seeks to advance awareness of and knowledge about the sustainable design of the built environment. THE ONLINE SDI CLASSROOM The online classes offered by the Sustainable Design Institute (SDI) are instructor-led, interactive, small and asynchronous. Each of these characteristics is vital to their success as an educational experience. By being instructor-led, our students are able to engage in give and take with the building industry experts who develop and teach the courses. Instructors include architects, engineers, researchers, landscape architects, interior designers, planners, green building consultants and authors. The interactive nature of the courses exposes students to each other’s ideas and experience as well as those of the instructor. Class sizes are limited to 15 persons, making manageable and meaningful discussions possible. Because our students and instructors are based in all time zones, the courses need to be asynchronous. This feature also allows students with busy lives (and jobs) to “enter” the classrooms according to their own daily schedules. Because they can be based in all time zones, students bring their own cultures and environmental conditions to the classroom, which, along with their different professional backgrounds, makes for a richly varied learning experience.
THE COURSES With over thirty graduate-level, half-semester courses to choose from, the SDI curriculum is the most comprehensive available on the subject of sustainable design. Courses address subjects from individual buildings to communities, from new building design to existing buildings, from detailed design to whole-building assessment systems, and from the current state-of-the-art to future possibilities. The full curriculum and faculty bios can be found at the-bac.edu/green. Many SDI courses are approved for continuing education credits by the American Institute of Architects, and all courses are qualified to offer GBCI CE hours for LEED APs and the Royal Institute of British Architects. Visit our website to learn details.

ute THE CERTIFICATES While some students take individual courses of interest, most choose to enroll in SDI certificate program. Graduate certificates are available in: ·· Sustainable Design ·· Sustainable Building Design and Construction ·· Sustainable Community Planning and Design ·· Sustainable Residential Design Each certificate has specific course requirements drawn from the overall SDI curriculum. See the-bac.edu/green for further information.
THE STUDENTS Most SDI students are either already a part of the building industry or they wish to be. Students range from planners and developers to all kinds of designers, contractors, facility managers, consultants and advocates. There are also always some students who take our courses simply to learn about environmentally responsible building. Students from the BAC’s on-campus degree programs are enrolled in the SDI online courses.

the Sustainable Design Institute continued FEATURED COURSES Global Perspectives on Sustainable Design Around the world, efforts to reconcile the demands of the built environment with the natural world have been going on for at least the last fifty years; in some places, for millennia. Recent decades have seen significant green advances in building products, systems, planning and design in Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia-New Zealand, as well as North America. This course examines the most innovative and exciting green design approaches, projects, policies and programs from around the world. While not all of these are transferable across cultural and geographic boundaries, the course is offered in the belief that, as we face the increasingly urgent need to build sustainably, we can all learn from each other. Greening the City Cities have the potential to be the most sustainable form of human development. This idea is coming to be widely recognized, as is the fact that most cities have a long way

to go to realize that potential. Progress is being made, however, in terms of improvements to infrastructure and the building stock, innovative transportation and development policies and programs, revised codes, and other measures designed to encourage sustainability. This course will examine the most innovative approaches to greening cities around the US and abroad and consider both their successes (and failures) and their applicability to different regions and cultures. Residential Energy Modeling Over the past twenty years the development of residential energy modeling software has made it possible to evaluate the energy efficiency (or profligacy) of building designs from the earliest stages of design. Using evaluative tools provided by the modeling software, designers are able to include energy efficiency with aesthetics, function, siting and the many other elements of design as they conceive a building. This course provides an overview of residential energy modeling, including some historical context of its evolution, an introduction to the most popular energy
13
modeling packages, including hands-on experience with at least one of them, and a discussion of how to make use of energy modeling results. Site Design, Landscaping, AND Site-Water Issues Structures are sustainably sited based on an assessment of site-specific climatic and natural conditions. An understanding of the geologic, hydrologic, and ecosystem processes, and regional climate are the foundations for sustainable planning and design. This course introduces principles and practices, and materials and methods that allow the realization of responsible solutions in today’s burgeoning green marketplace. Students explore the role that architects and other design professionals share in generating sustainable site design as site elements are used to increase comfort levels, and lower energy use and operating costs. In green practice, the site’s climatic and environmental features directly influence form and location as architectural design moves beyond the building envelope and into the landscape.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN INSTITUTE STUDENTS
Mike Luongo & Blair Kershaw Sometimes when people see the name Sustainable Design Institute (SDI) at the Boston Architectural College, they think, “I’m not in Boston. I’m not an architect. These courses don’t apply to me.” But, they might. While practicing architects do take SDI courses/certificates, usually only 20% of SDI students are architects. The rest come from all across the building industry, from developers and planners to facility managers, and beyond. Here are two: Mike Luongo completed college in the early 1970’s after which he made a career as a construction manager. In 2000, he was put in charge of building the US EPA’s New England Regional Laboratory in Chelmsford, MA, which was to be LEED-Certified. Bringing that
project as well as LEED certification to fruition was a process that Mike says “forced me to realize that the mundane business of constructing buildings had a big role to play in conserving the planet for our kids.” In January 2010, Mike decided to pursue this realization by getting a certificate in sustainable design from the BAC. Mike soon “caught onto the format of the online interface and then became completely caught up in pursuit of the investigations (he) took up” as part of the course. Mike completed his Certificate in Sustainable Design and Construction in August 2010 and is looking forward to contributing “to changing the way construction works.” A 2007 graduate of Middlebury College, Blair Kershaw was determined to find a career path about which she felt passionate. While living abroad, she reconnected with two lifelong interests — design and the environment — which led her
to sustainable design. In January 2010, Blair began the BAC’s online program and completed the Certificate in Sustainable Building Design and Construction by August. Blair now reports that she found the program and learning environment to be intellectually stimulating and incredibly flexible. Since completing her first certificate, Blair has been working toward a Certificate in Sustainable Community Planning and Design. This fall she is beginning the BAC’s new Masters of Design Studies in Sustainable Design; she is also currently working as a residential energy advisor. So consider Sustainable Design at the BAC. Enhance your skills. Develop your passion. Help make a positive future.
