BOSTON COLLEGE vs. NORTH DAKOTA
Two of college hockey’s premiere program faceoff in the World’s Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden, on Saturday night in Midtown. North Dakota, fresh off its eight NCAA national championship in 2016, has had some struggles as of late, only winning two of its last 10 outings (a sweep at St. Cloud State on Nov. 18-19). Most recently, the Fighting Hawks welcomes in Michigan State and lost (4-3) and tied (2-2) on Nov. 25-26, respectively, before heading into Saturday’s College Hockey Showdown. All eyes will be on this bout as Saturday marks the 24th battle between the Eagles and Fighting Haws. The series is dead even at 11-11-1 and since Jerry York lead his first BC team to the Frozen Four in 1998, BC and UND have been at the top of the mountain in terms of wins. Boston College’s 515 wins is the benchmark of any other program in the game while NoDak is literally just onw victory behind at 514. Not only have the Eagles and Fighting Hawks played against each other nine times in the NCAA Tournament (BC holds a 6-3 advantage in those meetings), Boston College and North Dakota have faced each other in back-to-back national championships in 2000 and 2001. UND won the first national title, 4-2, on April 8, 2000 in Providence before Krys Kolanos scored the nationalchampionship winning overtime goal (4:43) against North Dakota at the Pepsi Center in Albany, N.Y. to claim BC’s second NCAA championship on April 7, 2001. The two programs first met in the NCAA Tournament on March 14, 1963, in the national semifinals. UND won, 8-2. They met in the semis again on March 18, 1965 as BC went on to victory, 4-3. The two teams have split their quarterfinal showdowns. BC won, 3-1, on March 28, 1999 before the Fighting Hawks claimed the only victory over BC in Worcester on March 26, 2005 (3-6). For three-consecutive seasons from 2006 to 2008, BC and North Dakota faced off in the national semifinals. The Eagles won all three of those meetings, tallying six goals on each occasion. BC won, 6-5, on April 6, 2006 in Milwaukee followed by a 6-4 triumph on April 5, 2007 in St. Louis. BC went on to win the national title in 2008 over Notre Dame after beating North Dakota, 6-1, on April 10, 2008 in Denver. In the 23-game series, the Fighting Hawks have narrowly outscored BC, 83-80. The two programs have combined for 13 NCAA national championships and 45 NCAA Frozen Fours.

SHORTY WHAT YOU WANT SHORTY WHAT YOU NEED
Kim’s goal counts as Boston College’s fifth short-handed tally of the season. BC is one of five teams in college hockey (Bentley, BU, Lake Superior State and St. Lawrence) to have accounted for that many goals on the penalty kill this season.
EEKIN’ IT OUT
Boston College won its first game of the season scoring two goals or less on Nov. 29 at Northeastern. Prior to that outcome, the Eagles had not won a low-scoring battle like that all year as BC lost all four of its games, along with the one tie, in decisions of that nature.
HATS OFF FOR EVERYBODY
Sophomore JD Dudek scored Boston College’s third hat trick of the season and 341st in program history in the victory at UConn on Nov. 22, 2016. Between the span of Oct. 16 to Nov. 22, the Eagles have accounted for three hat tricks which is the fastest three hat tricks scored in a season since the 2009-10 season. Christopher Brown (3-1-4 • Oct. 16 at Wisconsin), Austin Cangelosi (3-0-3 • Nov. 4 at Maine) and JD Dudek (3-0-3 • Nov. 22) all turned the trick in a matter of 38 days. It marks the fastest three hat tricks scored for Boston College since Cam Atkinson scored two on March 12, 2010 and March 28, 2010 with one sandwiched in between from Matt Lombardi on March 20, 2010 at the end of the 2009-10 season (14 days).
A TRICK FOR THE AGES
Austin Cangelosi not only scored Boston College’s second hat trick of the season and the first of his career, he did so in unprecdented fashion by netting a natural hat trick (three uninterrupted goals) with three different tipes of goals. Cangelosi scored a power play goal, short-handed goal and even-strength goal in succession on Nov. 4 at Cross Insurance Arena in 34:19. The senior’s accomplishment marked BC’s first “natural hat trick” since Brian Gionta scored five goals on his first five shots on Jan. 27, 2001, also against Maine, at Kelley Rink. Thirty-five other Eagle hat tricks have occurred between Gionta’s modern-day record and Cangelosi’s natural hat trick.

MOTTAU TO HANG FROM THE RAFTERS
Former Boston College defenseman and Hobey Baker winner Mike Mottau (1997-2000) had his jersey retired on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016 at Kelley Rink against Minnesota. The Avon, Mass. native will became the 13th Eagle in Boston College hockey history to have his jersey retired. The 6-foot-0 blue liner is Boston College’s career record holder for most assists all-time (130) and 22nd, all-time, in points scored on The Heights (27 - 130 - 157). He played in 163 career games for the maroon and gold, tying him for ninth all-time. In his four years, the Eagles amassed a record of 99-52-14. Mottau’s 157 career points are also the most ever by an Eagle defenseman.
JANNEY TO BE ENSHRINED
Former BC standout Craig Janney (1985-87) is part of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2016 and is the the sixth Eagle to earn the distinction, joining Bill Guerin (Class of 2013), Brian Leetch (Class of 2008), John Cuniff (Class of 2003), Len Ceglarski (Class of 1992) and John A. “Snooks” Kelley (Class of 1974) as former Eagles inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. At The Heights, Janney played in 71 games over the course of the 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons, accruing 110 points (41-69-110) under head coach Len Ceglarski. While an Eagle, BC put together a record of 57-23-3, while winning the Hockey East Tournament in his freshman season. In his second season Janney garnered All-America first-team honors, along with being named All-Hockey East firstteam, Hockey East Tournament-All-Tournament, All-New England and earned the John A. Tiernan Memorial Award.
BIG - TIME VENUES
Boston College plays a rather unique schedule in 2016-17, playing at venues such as CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, for the College Hockey Classic and will shortly after combat Providence outdoors at Fenway Park for the fourth time in program history. The Eagles are also fortunate enough to play on one of the world’s most famous stages, Madison Square Garden, against defending national champion North Dakota in the College Hockey Showdown, on December 3, 2016.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in five seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).
NCAA Championships in the last 15 years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Boston College has competed in five of the last 11 national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).
36 515 .682 1024
NCAA Tournament victories in the last 19 years. That win total is nine victories more than North Dakota, which has totaled 27 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.
Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1998 Frozen Four, the Eagles are one of three teams with at least 500 victories since that point. Boston College leads the pack with 515 victories, while Defending national champion North Dakota (514) and Michigan (506) have also eclipsed the 500 mark over the past 19 seasons.
Upon completion of the 2015-16 season, Boston College maintained its best overall winning percentage in Hockey East history for the third-consecutive season. Over the course of 32 seasons in league play, the Eagles’ winning percentage of .682 (470-256-81) reigns supreme in one of college hockey’s top conferences.
Jerry York’s overall record is 1,024-603-111 (.621) in 45 seasons as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division 1 coach in the history of college hockey. York is 36-13 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 41 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.
Frozen Four appearances in the last 19 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (12), North Dakota (10), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five), Michigan State (three) and Denver (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.
Sophomore forward Colin White was selected by the Ottawa Senators 21st overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 17th Eagle in the last 29 years to have been drafted in the first round of the NHL. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves (29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010), Michael Matheson (23rd, 2012), Alex Tuch (18th, 2014) and Noah Hanifin (fifth, 2015) as Boston College first-round draftees.
Former Eagles were active on NHL opening night roster, the most of any college hockey program; Wisconsin & Michigan also had 17 but a couple were on team’s IR lists
Colin White was named to the 2016 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Helsinki, Finland, becoming the 28th Eagle participant in World Junior play under head coach Jerry York, joining Jeff Farkas (1996, 1997, 1998), Marty Reasoner (1996, 1997), Blake Bellefuille (1997), Brian Gionta (1998, 1999), Mike Mottau (1998), Bobby Allen (1998), Brooks Orpik (2000), J.D.
