CANGE’S CORNER Senior Austin Cangelosi has accounted for 60 percent of BC’s scoring in its first three games. The Estero, Fla., native not only started off the Eagles’ scoring this year by converting a penalty shot against Air Force, he accounted for his fifth multi-goal performance against Denver on Oct. 8 and was named to the Ice Breaker All-Tournament Team.

SCORING PRODUCTION RETURNS TO THE HEIGHTS There is no denying that Boston College’s roster looks much different than last year’s with the addition of 13 new faces. Fourteen Eagles from last year’s Frozen Four squad either graduated or joined the professional ranks. Despite almost half of last year’s scoring (77 out of 156 goals - 49.4 percent) being absent in 2016-17, Boston College returns three of its top four point getters from last season, including second-team All- AmericanRyan Fitzgerald (24-23-47), Hockey East Rookie of the Year Colin White (19-24-43) and assistant captain Austin Cangelosi (20-17-37).

AGAINST THE REST The Eagles squared off against a pair of stingy defenses in Air Force and Denver in the opening weekend nad managed to average two goals per game. Heading into the Wisconsin series, the Eagles are tied for 33rd, nationally, in scoring (2.00 ppg) and tied for ninth in the league with Northeastern.

THE DUDEK ABIDES Sophomore JD Dudek potted his second-career goal with a comeback bid at Wisconsin on Friday night at the Kohl Center. Captain Chris Calnan was credited with the assist.

COTTON CONNECTS Freshman David Cotton’s first-career goal came in game-winning fashion at Denver. 2

THE GREAT WOLL Freshman goaltender Joe Woll had some big skates to fill in his Eagle debut out in Denver but the Missouri product rose to the occassion, particularly in the third period of BC’s win over No. 3 Denver. Woll denied all 23 of DU’s offerings in the final frame, anchoring the team to victory. Over the course of Woll’s first three games, Woll denied 95-of-101 shots and possesses a .941 save percentage (14th nationally) and a 2.02 goals against average (18th nationally).

KIM KAN Sophomore defenseman Michael Kim, who joined last year’s squad in the middle of the season down in Florida, leads all defensemen with two assists and is one of three skaters currently (Cangelosi, Moore) with a +2 rating.

SEVEN - MAN SQUAD On BC’s official roster, the Eagles have seven defensemen on the 25-man unit for 2016-17. Casey Fitzgerald leads the charge on the blue line as the second-year rear guard notched 27 points (4-23-27) to earn a spot on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team last year. The North Reading, Mass. native also lead BC with a +27 rating. Michael Campoli, Luke McInnis, Connor Moore and Jesper Mattila will be BC’s newest blueliners in 2016-17.

DEFENSE AGAINST THE REST In two games, Boston College’s defense is surrending only 2.00 goals per game, tied for 10th lowest in the country and tied for second on the conference level. Despite being the 15th most penalized team in college hockey thus far, the Eagles’ penalty-killing unit has done a good job, snuffing out 19-of-23 opportunities at a rate of 82.6 percent.

GAME notes EAGLETS

For the second time in three seasons, Boston College sports the youngest roster in NCAA hockey. As of Oct. 1, the average age of the Eagles roster is 20 years and 49 days. Boston University is second with a mean of 20 years and 108 days while Notre Dame is third at 20 years and 272 days. Boston College has five seniors and zero juniors, meaning the rest of the team is composed of a combined 20 freshmen and sophomores. Head coach Jerry York ushered in 13 new Eagles for 2016-17, easily his largest recruiting class in 23 seasons. It marks the second-largest incoming class behind Miami (14) this season.

ROAD WARRIORS

Boston College may forget what the inside of Conte Forum looks like by November as the Eagles take to the road for nine of their first 11 games of the season. Since Jerry York took over on The Heights in 1994-95, the Eagles have never been away from home this often in their first 11 games. The last time Boston College played four games away from Kelley Rink was the start of the 2010-11 season, when it went 3-1.

SHOW BIRDS

Boston College will have 17 alums on opening night rosters in the NHL this season, including: Brian Boyle (TBL), Brian Dumoulin (PIT), Brian Gionta (BUF), Brooks Orpik (WSH), Cam Atkinson (CBJ), Chris Kreider (NYR), Kevin Hayes (NYR), Jimmy Hayes (BOS), Johnny Gaudreau (CGY), Ben Smith (COL), Cory Schneider (NJD), Michael Matheson (FLA), Noah Hanifin (CAR), and Patrick Eaves (DAL). Zach Sanford (WSH), Steve Santini (NJD) and Miles Wood (NJD) will all be rookies this season, cracking the regular season lineups for the first time. Last season, Boston College sports the most alums to play in the show as 23 Eagles graced the rosters of a variety of NHL clubs. Michigan finished second with 21.

IF THE SKATE FITZ...

Senior assistant captain Ryan Fitzgerald returns to Boston College for his senior season as college hockey’s leader with the most career goals (54) and fifth, overall, in career points scored (102). He is only two power play strikes behind Austin Ortega (Omaha - 17) for the most career power play goals in college hockey as well. In regards to career short-handed goals (5) and game-winning goals (11), he is tied for first and tied for second, respectively, amongst all returning skaters.

CANGE’S CIRCLE

Senior assistant captain Austin Cangelosi is not only one of BC’s leading returning scorers, but he is college hockey’s biggest threat in the faceoff circle after last year’s numbers. The Estero, Fla., native led the nation in faceoffs won with 545 and highest faceoff win percentage (63.7 percent) amongst all centermen over 200 draws. So far this season, Cangelosi is 25-of-43 with a 58.1 faceoff winning percentage.

CALLING THE SHOTS

Freshman forward Graham McPhee and sophomore forward Chris Shero are both born from hockey wits as each of these Eagles’ fathers are general managers in the National Hockey League. Father, George McPhee, played for Coach York at Bowling Green where he won the Hobey Baker Award in 1982 and is now the GM of the new Las Vegas franchise. Shero’s father, Ray, is the general manager of the New Jersey Devils while Tom Fitzgerald, father of Ryan and Casey, is the assistant GM of the Devils.

GAME notes BIG - TIME VENUES

Boston College plays a rather unique schedule in 2016-17, playing at venues such as CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, for the College Hockey Classic and will shortly after combat Providence outdoors at Fenway Park for the fourth time in program history. The Eagles are also fortunate enough to play on one of the world’s most famous stages, Madison Square Garden, against defending national champion North Dakota in the College Hockey Showdown, on December 3, 2016.

THE COLDEST PROGRAM OF ‘EM ALL

When the Eagles took on Quinnipiac in last year’s national semifinal contest, it marked Boston College’s 25th Frozen Four appearance which is the most in college hockey history. BC looks to make it 26 this year in Chicago on April 6, 2017.

FAMILY TIES

The Eagles are a tight-knit group, but especially so do to the number of family ties within the BC hockey program. There are two sets of brothers, including senior Ryan and sophomore Casey Fitzgerald while twin brothers Jesper and Julius Mattila skated in all the way from Finland to play for Coach York. Luke McInnis, incoming defenseman for Boston College this season, is the son of Marty McInnis who is not only tied for 39th in most goals all-time on The Heights (58), but he is also entering his fourth season as an assistant coach. Associate head coach Greg Brown is the uncle of sophomore forward Christopher Brown.

JANNEY TO BE ENSHRINED

Former BC standout Craig Janney (1985-87) is part of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2016 and is the the sixth Eagle to earn the distinction, joining Bill Guerin (Class of 2013), Brian Leetch (Class of 2008), John Cuniff (Class of 2003), Len Ceglarski (Class of 1992) and John A. “Snooks” Kelley (Class of 1974) as former Eagles inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. At The Heights, Janney played in 71 games over the course of the 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons, accruing 110 points (41-69-110) under head coach Len Ceglarski. While an Eagle, BC put together a record of 57-23-3, while winning the Hockey East Tournament in his freshman season. In his second season Janney garnered All-America first-team honors, along with being named All-Hockey East firstteam, Hockey East Tournament-All-Tournament, All-New England and earned the John A. Tiernan Memorial Award.

Coaches that are Boston College hockey alums – Jerry York, Greg Brown and Marty McInnis. All three have been inducted into Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

in 5

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in five seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

NCAA Championships in the last 15 years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Boston College has competed in five of the last 11 national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).

36 504 .682 1013

NCAA Tournament victories in the last 19 years. That win total is nine victories more than North Dakota, which has totaled 27 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1998 Frozen Four, the Eagles are one of three teams with at least 500 victories since that point. Defending national champion North Dakota leads the pack with 509 victories, while Boston College (503 and Michigan (501) have also eclipsed the 500 mark over the past 19 seasons.

Upon completion of the 2015-16 season, Boston College maintained its best overall winning percentage in Hockey East history for the third-consecutive season. Over the course of 32 seasons in league play, the Eagles’ winning percentage of .682 (470-256-81) reigns supreme in one of college hockey’s top conferences.

Jerry York’s overall record is 1,013-601-110 (.620) in 45 seasons as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division 1 coach in the history of college hockey. York is 36-13 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 41 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.

Frozen Four appearances in the last 19 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (12), North Dakota (10), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five), Michigan State (three) and Denver (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.

Sophomore forward Colin White was selected by the Ottawa Senators 21st overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 17th Eagle in the last 29 years to have been drafted in the first round of the NHL. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves (29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010), Michael Matheson (23rd, 2012), Alex Tuch (18th, 2014) and Noah Hanifin (fifth, 2015) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Former Eagles were active on NHL opening night roster, the most of any college hockey program; Wisconsin & Michigan also had 17 but a couple were on team’s IR lists

Colin White was named to the 2016 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Helsinki, Finland, becoming the 28th Eagle participant in World Junior play under head coach Jerry York, joining Jeff Farkas (1996, 1997, 1998), Marty Reasoner (1996, 1997), Blake Bellefuille (1997), Brian Gionta (1998, 1999), Mike Mottau (1998), Bobby Allen (1998), Brooks Orpik (2000), J.D.
