A MESSAGE FROM JAMESTOWN PRESIDENT
MICHAEL PHILLIPS In 2013 Jamestown, L.P. purchased what we now call the Innovation and Design Building (IDB), a 1.4-million-square-foot building that is home to the Boston Design Center (BDC) and is a leader in the Seaport District, bringing new jobs, resources, restaurants, and transportation options to the area. We are a 24hour urban innovation and manufacturing hub for architects and engineers; makers and craftspeople; research and design firms; tech start-ups; design professionals, and showrooms. The IDB enables some of the most dynamic cross-pollination of skill sets in the country. At the core of our DNA is the Boston Design Center, home to over 1,200 luxury brands. We recently celebrated thirty years at the BDC, applauding our valued tenants and the long-trusted support of the design community. The BDC continues to grow and evolve and Jamestown is proud to be a thought-leader of the design community. In addition to being a robust resource for product sourcing, we are expanding our outreach and becoming an invaluable resource for the community by partnering with organizations including Design Museum Boston, Nantucket by Design, Heading Home to Dinner, and countless others. By making improvements to the infrastructure and developing the promenade with compelling retail hybrid brands like Ann Sacks and Waterworks alongside much needed amenities, we will be able to build a bridge between our long-standing tenants at the BDC and our neighbors. Finally, please join us in congratulating Kristan McLaughlin, a reliable and friendly face to many of you, in her new role as the BDC’s designated General Manager, Leasing & Partnerships. For all inquiries, please contact Michael at mphillips@idbostonmagazine.com.

DEAR READERS We live in a world where people are constantly referring to the power of social media. We all acknowledge it’s a powerful tool, and as editors we seek clever ways to distribute content for our “media brands.” We used to say magazines but apparently print is dead and it’s all about digital and impressions, which is code for reading content online and clicking deeper and deeper into the stories, and you’re critically dead in the water without video. Once you’ve figured out this hybrid publishing formula and renamed editors brand managers, you should be all set to tackle social media. At Jamestown we are all about innovation and staying nimble in a rapidly changing industry. It’s a point of pride and our properties reflect it. At our core however, is community. At the end of the day, isn’t social media in its simplest form merely an extension of community? Instagram is my favorite and I not so guiltily confess to engaging in strategies for embedding hashtags, tagging handles, pithy comments artfully blending emojis, and timely posting schedules. I relish watching followers grow as a result of these strategic little plays. That’s the sport of it really. What I enjoy most though is that Instagram is a community that allows me to be connected, inspired, and transported at any given moment. Think about it—any time, any place, with just about anyone. What else can lay claim to this? Here are a few of my favorite feeds. What are yours? As always, please be in touch. Oh and by the way, long live print! A FEW OF MY FAVORITE BLOGS

HOW THEY DECORATED: INSPIRATION FROM GREAT WOMEN OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY By P. Gaye Tapp with foreword by Charlotte Moss How They Decorated shows us how some of the most stylish and influential women in social history lived and decorated. In her foreword Charlotte Moss writes, “How They Decorated is an invitation to enter the enchanting worlds of sixteen women—to experience their circles of influence and the results of their time spent at the altar of elegance, comfort, and beauty.” A common thread runs between these sixteen women and the discipline they applied to achieving a well-lived life. The magnificent sixteen: Lady Diana Cooper, Evangeline Bruce, Louise de Vilmorin, Sybil Connolly, Hélène Rochas, Gabrielle van Zuylen, Mona von Bismarck, Pauline de Rothschild, Babe Paley, Elsa Schiaparelli, Fleur Cowles, Pauline Trigère, Bunny Mellon, Dominique de Menil, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Lesley Blanch. THE DECORATED HOME: LIVING WITH STYLE AND JOY
PATTERNS: INSIDE THE DESIGN LIBRARY
By Meg Braff with foreword by Charlotte Moss and photography by J. Savage Gibson
Every season designers from the worlds of fashion, home furnishings, textiles, and graphic arts seek inspiration from patterns to bring their collections to life. Many of the world’s foremost designers turn to the Design Library in Hudson Valley to source the patterns they need. The Boston Design Center was pleased to host the Design Library book signing this spring. The first book to reveal the inner workings of the renowned Design Library, one of the world’s largest and most vital sources of surface designs, Patterns: Inside the Design Library is packed with hundreds of never before seen archived prints from the Design Library’s exclusive collection.
“I simply cannot resist a classic, crisp white kitchen. Without fail, it provides a great base of operation that feels clean, fresh, and conducive to cooking,” confides interior designer Meg Braff in her new book The Decorated Home: Living with Style and Joy. Braff maintains that a room only needs a few standout details for it to have great impact and the kitchen is no exception. To punctuate a monochromatic kitchen Braff employs a dose of color and pattern, and the energetic punch of a mosaic-tile backsplash, bold upholstered barstools, or cheerful colored placemats to pull together the space. Braff also recommends building a few surprises into a kitchen’s schematic layout, like painting the inside of glass-fronted cabinets an accent color. A detail like this can add punch or equally as important, soften the effect of a kitchen’s more industrial surfaces. Published by Rizzoli, 2017 | www.rizzoliusa.com

A HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY BY P E T E R P E N N O Y E R A N D K AT I E R I D D E R
HIS & HERS A House in the Country chronicles the collaborative effort of renowned architect Peter Pennoyer and his wife, highly sought-after interior designer Katie Ridder, to create a Greek Revival house in the middle of the bucolic countryside of Millbrook, New York’s cattle and horse farms. For years, the couple had been thinking about building a house to escape to in the country before they found the six-and-ahalf-acre Millbrook site, which had all the features they had been looking for. Together Pennoyer and Ridder tell the story of the conception, design, decoration, and landscaping of their dream house.

What’s not to love about this bright yet still cozy retreat in Seal Harbor, Maine? Designer Leandra FremontSmith has turned out bright and cheerful interiors with the perfect amount of gusto to hold up to the more salty elements of life in a small town on the southeastern quadrant of Mount Desert Island. A Harvard graduate who studied at the American University in Paris and the Boston Architectural Center, Leandra puts form, color, and function at the center of every project. She begins each by asking three simple questions: How do you live? What inspires you? What gives you comfort? If we asked ourselves these questions more often, wouldn’t we all seek happier lives? For those lucky enough to work with Fremont-Smith, the result is a home that is inviting, colorful, and most of all joyful. LIVING ROOM

A TALE OF TWO CITIES M I C H A E L C A R T E R C R E AT E S I M A G I N E D H O M E S IN BOSTON & NEW YORK FOR SAME CLIENT
words by chesie breen · photography by michael j. lee (ma) & steve freihon (ny) The highly revered, Boston-based designer Michael Carter was first hired to design an apartment for his client at the Mandarin in Boston. “Their daughter was living in Boston at the time, and they wanted to have a base here as well. Originally the family had a brownstone on Marlborough Street but, as their needs changed, they were enticed by the amenities and modern design of the Mandarin, so they came to us for help in reinterpreting their lifestyle,” says Carter. From there, Carter took what was basically a shell and re-created the bones so that they evoked luxury. Custom built-ins with exotic wood veneers were added throughout the unit, as seen in the living room. The fireplace was an uninspired holdover from the contractor, so they designed a custom mantel from Chesney’s in London as a replacement. “The overall effect was a blend of the traditional elements from their Back Bay townhouse with the clean, chic styling appropriate to the Mandarin. The clients described the before and after as going from zilch to zen,” recalls Carter. “Fast forward a few years and the same clients called and asked if we would ‘mind’ helping out with their newly acquired unit in New York’s famous One Madison, a distinctive pencil-thin apartment
building literally located at the base of Madison Avenue, where Rupert Murdoch owns the top three floors. This location was ideal for the husband’s new job as CFO and President of a major U.S. corporation—he could walk the two blocks to his office. He was very enthused to show us the apartment and the amenities that came with it—spa, media and entertainment areas, swimming pool, club rooms and dining rooms,” says Carter. Seeing these enviable spaces helped guide Carter as they perfectly embraced the spirit of the all-glass building with abundant light and the expertly crafted use of natural luxury materials—exotic woods and rare stone. These were incorporated into the client’s new unit with custom built-ins designed by Carter. “The other reason it was a great call for us to see these spaces, was our client insisted we visit the swimming pool on the fourth floor. He was explaining with pleasure that so many of the owners in the building lived in other countries like Russia, China, and Saudi Arabia, that it felt like he had the whole skyscraper to himself. Then, as we went from the spa to the pool, we heard voices and laughter … so in truth not totally alone. In fact it was resident Tom Brady enjoying some fun time with his children in the pool,” bemuses Carter.

KRISTIN PATON INTERIORS words by chesie breen · portrait by elevin photography photography by eric roth Kristin Paton is no stranger to the interior design world. Classically trained, she has been turning out elegantly nuanced interiors for twenty years. In addition to establishing her own design practices in London and Boston, Paton has apprenticed at the highly revered design firms of William Hodgins, Parish-Hadley Associates, McMillen Inc., and Pamela Banker. She holds a B.S. in Interior Design and Illustration from the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University and has studied architecture at the Piazza Savonarola in Florence, Italy. That’s quite a resume in a world where careers are being launched on social media. Paton’s interiors are sophisticated and correct. Whether handsome and tailored or whimsical and glamorous—her interiors always look as though they were inspired at the altar of elegance. She combines expertise developed from two decades spent working in New York and London with a touch of European glamour and the practicality borne of her New England roots. For Paton, decorating isn’t just about turning out beautiful projects. Though passionate about design, her firm is respected for their professional and acutely organized process. “We are seasoned listeners, so we begin by asking questions about lifestyle and taste. We build a visual vocabulary and deliver interior schematics, furniture layouts, color palette charts, finish schedules, timetables, budgets, and well-articulated purchasing documentation. We draw from twenty years of experience and a broad array of resources to deliver the best of your vision. We also bring a relentless attention to detail to ensure that our project is completed to your highest expectations. On time. On budget,” promises Paton. In this issue Paton shares two projects that illustrate this promise and her knack for knowing just what is called for. The first is a stylish high-rise residence in Brookline with custom wallpaper from de Gournay, custom finishes, and luxurious fabrics throughout. The second is an easy-breezy, carefree summer escape with inspired blue and white interiors and nautical nods on Nantucket Island.

We started by adding neon lettering to a backdrop that we painted in graphic stripes. We then incorporated a grouping of paper cranes that we handcrafted out of Farrow & Ball wallpapers. Marble countertops and polished chrome faucets add visual interest and a touch of classic elegance, while furniturestyle cabinetry in muted greys adds architectural interest to serene and sophisticated work spaces.

Custom Bathroom Renovations
In the fall of 2016, the Boston Design Center celebrated its 30th anniversary with a big, splashy celebration that pulled out all the stops. Months in advance, committees were formed, ideas were shared, lists were compiled, and plans were formulated to throw a party that would not just wow and inspire, but usher in decades to come. Spirits were high as Jamestown President Michael Phillips welcomed guests and toasted our past and our future. We thought it would be fun to partner with our friends at the Junior League of Boston to create a retrospective of the last thirty years of design in Boston and the role the Boston Design Center played.

1993 GERALD POMEROY “The Junior League of Boston show houses allowed me to connect with and get to know many other designers in a very unique setting. I have formed many friendships that have been ongoing for years. Professionally, it was a way for a large audience to see my work. Being published early in my career and getting national recognition for my show house involvement changed the trajectory of my career. My affiliation with the esteemed regional editor for Traditional Home, Estelle Bond Guralnick, and photographer extraordinaire, Eric Roth, led to an ongoing collaboration which lasted my whole career.

NANCY SERAFINI “Participating in the Junior League Show House simply changed my career. The visibility and resultant publicity catapulted me from the realm of ‘young decorator’ to professional interior designer. I will be forever grateful to the Junior League for the opportunity not only to further my career but to help them fulfill their mission. Brought back floods of memories: The bathroom mural was painted by my best childhood friend and that was Woodson wallpaper. My son was two and is now forty! The bedroom was done for Laura Ashley and I don’t think any other designer has ever been sponsored.”
AT THE BDC MALLY SKOK “Being part of the Junior League of Boston Decorators' Show House family has added so many interesting dimensions to my design life. Working with the Junior League teams over the years, through all of the inevitable mini and major design dramas, has a way of making you feel you are in a real community and are working on something that is bigger than you, and your design world. I love the new friendships that are forged between the designers that participate, some of whom have become great friends ever since. Of course, it’s always a great honor to be selected to participate in such a prestigious show house, and to be recognized by your community. I love being involved.”

3 Linherr Hollingsworth seems to be turning heads wherever she goes. The New England-based designer, whose firm works out of a restored factory in Norwalk, Connecticut, drew the attention of industry leaders Lisa and Cary Kravet and before you knew it they were launching a Linherr Hollingsworth lifestyle collection called Bohème—a fresh and unexpected collection of fabrics, trimmings, wallcoverings, and carpet. Taking its cue from the designer’s background in high fashion, transformative style,
and affinity to art and travel, the collection is both adaptable and eclectic. Together they hope it will be a refreshing viewpoint for today’s design world. Like her design of this flat in the West Village of New York, Bohème is evocative of Hollingsworth’s own freespirited yet refined vibe. Her work is simplicity with an edge; gusto combined with whimsy. Her rooms are well tuned compositions of pattern, texture, color, and form with touches of metallic.
1 In the entertainment area, custom swivel barrel back chairs upholstered in Kravet’s “Prospect Shadow” are supported by a gray velvet sectional, where wall torches by Bright Group add function and a touch of architectural surprise. 2 The streamlined Molteni kitchen centered in an open floor plan extends the perfect backdrop for an organic and artful infusion of custom works by Donald Baechler and Juliana Romano balanced with a vintage Tibetan area rug. 3 A vintage 1960s Stilnovo pendant fixture from John Salibello anchors the living area offering an eclectic mix of modern and vintage framed by Cassina “Nest” sofas, B&B Italia “Metropolitan” chairs, and “Diesis” cocktail table.

“Linherr Hollingsworth brought a unique aesthetic to the Kravet collection through the blending of masculine and feminine elements in her work. Her designs pushed our vendors to create new constructions and add new yarns to capture her aesthetic and together we interpreted her love of art, travel, and high fashion to create a free-spirited yet refined collection.”

“Our greatest role as designers is making people feel comfortable in their homes so in essence our goals are the same as HEADING HOME’s goals. We are trying to achieve the same thing so it made perfect sense to partner with them on an event that would foster goodwill in the Boston design community and support an organization dedicated to ending homelessness,” says Skok.

“Wallpaper is enjoying a revival right now and to celebrate and appreciate our 70th year, we launched a new collection of papers inspired by the decade in which Farrow & Ball was founded. The three uniquely textured patterns are contemporary interpretations of classic 1940s prints, showcasing the past informed by the present. All of our wallpapers are timeless, rooted in the past, and suited for traditional or more contemporary homes, while still acknowledging the archival design in which they originated. This concept is so important to us, especially in our 70th year, to honor the history of our brand while remaining relevant and new.” CHARLIE COSBY Head of Creative
